Coffee Cold

Funk/Reediciones
  1. Coffee Cold (3:25)
  2. Space (1:53)
Review: While Canadian composer/producer Galt MacDermot will always be most famous for composing the score to legendary musical "Hair", he was also responsible for some killer jazz, soul and funk records in his time, too. Take "Coffee Cold", for example. Originally tucked away on his obscure 1966 jazz-funk LP, Shapes of Rhythm, the track sees him adding fluid jazz-piano solos to a chunky breakbeat-driven instrumental workout. On the flip you'll find "Space", a jaunty - if strangely mixed - fusion of lolloping but crispy drum breaks and jousting Harpsichord and piano solos. The track is arguably best known for being sampled on Busta Rhymes's "Woo-Hah", though before that it featured on MacDermot's 1969 soundtrack album, Woman is Sweeter.

Funk/Reediciones
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

Review: It was way back in 2008 that multi-instrumentalist and beat-maker Hiroto Uyama first released debut album A Son of the Son, a sparkling, emotion-rich set that set out his jazz-meets-hip-hop fusion blueprint. Now available on vinyl for the very first time (it was previously only available on CD and digital download), the set sees Uyama combine jazzy piano motifs, striking strings and additional jazz instrumentation (think clarinet, flute etc) with head-nodding beats, dust-encrusted samples and occasional rap vocals courtesy of Pase Rock and Golden Boy. It's a formula that worked wonderfully first time round and still does now, thanks in no small part to Uyama's ability to deliver hazy, laidback and life-affirming thrills throughout.

Review: Traditionally the liner notes of an album take on a kind of third-party address, where a writer is delivering their thoughts about how an album makes them feel without breaching that space where they are representing themselves or the moment in time directly to the reader. The goal is typically a kind of timelessness, but as we live in unprecedented times, unconventional methods take on new life, and hopefully importance. In the spirit of that idea... man, is this the kind of album we all need right now. So many of us feel like we're constantly walking a tightrope, are feeling like we can't unwind, are in genuine need of a few moments of respite. Every so often an album emerges from an artist that most likely did not realize when they were composing how timely the results would be, and Lofi Dimensions is exactly that kind of record. It doesn't really matter why it's coming when it is, what's important is that it's here, offering peace to the perturbed and inspiration for the downcast. The American Dollar have long been one of those artists operating in a kind of middle ground, a band with a long history of creating moving instrumental rock that has somehow avoided ever becoming synonymous with modern American post-rock acts. They retain a sort of autonomy in a valued position just outside the boundaries of classification. Blending electronic textures with moving guitar and keyboard melodies, their music has always traveled somewhere in the spaces between trip-hop, electronic, post-rock and ambient, and this inability to be defined is ultimately what sets them apart from the trappings of genre, allowing them to be whatever they want The American Dollar to be in a given moment, always on their terms.

Review: This limited edition triple vinyl set is as killer as the samurais from which it takes its name. The music is culled from the popular amine series on Cartoon Network that mixes hip hop culture with Japanese samurai culture and more than a little dose of jazzy stylings. There are vocal boom-baps and journeying spy themes, deep late night cuts and harder hitting joints, all performed by Nujabes, Fat Jon, Force Of Nature & Illicit Tsuboi. The downtempo charms of "Just Forget" are awash with oriental keys, while "Ole" is soul licked and "World Without Worlds" is superbly lo-fi.

Review: Billy Ghost is the instrumental project of The Kickback singer and songwriter Billy Yost. The Purple Haunted Bathtub is the first full release from the producer, emphasizing his love of instrumental hip hop, antiquated sampling technology, and the VHS collection amassed by his five older brothers from which he cribs many of the vocal and dialog snippets that litter the album. In an already flooded "lofi" genre, Yost has sought to carve out a space by creating "definable hooks that hopefully bother you for days" over the top of his dusty drums. The Haunted Purple Bathtub is dedicated to Yost's dog, a shiba inu named Opal, who adorns the cover of the album.
