Review: This limited edition triple vinyl set is as killer as the samurais from which it takes its name. The music is culled from the popular amine series on Cartoon Network that mixes hip hop culture with Japanese samurai culture and more than a little dose of jazzy stylings. There are vocal boom-baps and journeying spy themes, deep late night cuts and harder hitting joints, all performed by Nujabes, Fat Jon, Force Of Nature & Illicit Tsuboi. The downtempo charms of "Just Forget" are awash with oriental keys, while "Ole" is soul licked and "World Without Worlds" is superbly lo-fi.

  1. The Boston Drop (vocal)
  2. The Boston Drop (instrumental)
Review: Having enjoyed a successful 2020, DJ Soopasoul strides into the new year in confident mood via a fresh Soopastole Edits release focused on the work of one of his favourite artists, the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. Interestingly, the legendary artist doesn't actually feature all that much on the A-side vocal mix of 'Boston Drop', with Soopasoul limiting his involvement to a few excited yelps, grunts and instructions to the backing band. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, because the musical accompaniment - which can be admired further on the tight, DJ-friendly instrumental take - offers an enticing mixture of hard, sun-bright guitar licks, heavy drum-breaks, handclaps and chunky bass. Like the rest of the series, it sounds like a guaranteed floor-filler.

Review: For the imprint's second release, Private Stock Records welcomes some serious mash-up/bootleg remix royalty: Dusty Donuts regular Jim Sharp. He's in fine form too, breathing new life into a sugary 21st century R&B classic by placing the all-female vocals atop crunchy, B-Boy friendly hip-hop beats, jazzy guitar licks and hazy organ stabs. Similarly lauded Canadian producer Flipout takes over on side B, craftily adding verses from a golden-era hip-hop classic to a backing track seemingly crafted from snippets of a hazy old funk track and some suitably floor-friendly hip-hop beats. Mash-ups they may be, but these are brilliantly crafted and sound like genuine future club-rockers.As played by DJ Koco

Review: A warm welcome back to cheeky downtempo twosome Bent, who hear offer up their first studio set for 14 years. Up in the Air is full of neat reminders that what made them so popular first time round, namely a seductive, slinky, atmospheric, sample-heavy sound that tended towards the tongue-in-cheek and was more likely to draw influence from dodgy, radio-friendly 1980s soft-rock singles and vintage easy listening than obscure Balearic beats or austere electronica. There are of course a few differences - it's far more polished than their early works, and even more musically detailed - but for the most part this is vintage Bent. Given how miserable the world is right now, it's rather nice to listen to an album that prioritises cheeriness, quirkiness and musical colour above all else.

Review: Last year Amsterdam-based Soul Supreme served up one of our favourite albums of 2020, a self-titled exploration of dusty beats and colourful boogie synths that still sounds fresh after umpteen listens. Here he returns to action with a similarly excellent two-track seven-inch. A-side 'Huit Octobre 1971' is deliciously laidback, sweet and starry, with Bob James style electric piano motifs and spacey, sustained chords reclining over warm bass and loose-limbed, jazz-funk style drums. He gets more up-tempo on flipside 'Raid', layering more mazy electric piano solos and languid trumpet and sax solos over high-octane, jazz-dance influenced drums.

Review: Jorun Bombay likes to muck about with all sorts of different beats, but he always does it with real skill and personality. That's made him one Canada's most revered hip hop stars and here he tackles the one and only Parliament. His version of "Knee Deep" with its extra bass weight and shrill synth lines bring the party vibes thanks to the feel good pianos. "Mothership Bonus Beats" on the flip is a late night, slow and sleazy jam to get you in the mood. The squelchy synth bass is to die for, the drawn out horns linger long in the air making it a perfectly steamy cut.

  1. Hey!
  2. Can We Rebuilt Our City?
Review: Sometimes a record comes along that is a wonderful anomaly that really is all about the music. Silver Leaf recently appeared on the radar via obscuro diggers on both sides of the Atlantic and landed with a Hey!
What is known about Silver Leaf, beyond that it was a short-lived mid-80s project out of Cincinnati, Ohio, is that it features ex-Zephyr keyboardist John Faris, working alongside the mysterious vocalist Silvia Leaf.
The difference between the blues and occasional psychedelic rock of early 70s Boulder, Colorado's Zephyr and the lo-fi recordings of Silver Leaf are striking, but in Hey! and Can We Rebuild Our City?, the power of the ballad and strong playing of John, is wrapped in mid-80s, mid-States lo fi heaven.
Whether a non-de-plume, Ms Leaf's searing, innocent vocals fly above John's keys and programming. Hey!'s repetitive exhalations act like a mantra to a party, while tom's chime in accompaniment. Here it comes!
Can We Rebuild Our City? starts with Faris' forlorn intro before crashing percussion heads to some kind of wonderful, as Leaf questions a calls to hearts.
Releasing just 3 singles, Silver Leaf's music is unique and essential, an experience and a delight to present.

Review: Carl Weingarten and Multiphase Records return to Emotional Rescue with a collection of the music of Delay Tactics and their live, reel-to-reel and collaborative experimentation, that spawned two remarkable albums.

After meeting guitarist Reed Nesbit from the St. Louis new wave scene , Weingarten joined forces for a series of concerts, performing with guitars running through tape looping delay systems similar to Robert Fripp's 'Frippertronics' ideals.

Producer and engineer Walter Whitney joined to record the debut album, Out-Pop Options (1982), when it became clear his skills were a perfect addition. Recording to 4-track analog tape, the sound developed from drone based to proto-techno pop. Digital technology, drum machines, guitar pedals and digital effects offered creative freedom that resulted in rhythmic, kraut inspired pieces.

These Kosmiche leanings retain a unique US aesthetic and continued after Nesbit's departure. When guitarist David Udell joined for Any Questions? (1984), greater explorations - now recorded to 8 track - pushed the envelope to a wider sound.

In an age of endless holy grails, the work of Delay Tactics has a resonance, spanning Eno to Ashra but with a place and sense beyond Europe and towards to new age and fourth world leanings of Laraaji, Hassel and Karma.

Review: Fabrizio Esposito was born in Naples / Italy into a family of passionate musicians and vinyl collectors. He spent his early childhood immersed in his grandparnent's extensive vinyl collection which he has since inherited, this collection heavily influenced Fabrizio and made him a fan of Italian Wave, Italo Disco, Neapolitan Funk, Soul and Disco. After all these years working in clubs and with artists Fabrizio decided it was time to realise his other dream and become a DJ and producer himself fusing together his rich musical heritage combined with his clear vision for the future, creating his own unique sound. Fabrizio explains that since he was 14 he had always been behind the scenes of parties, from a PR to a promoter, always watching the djs and producers working to create the party around them. Since this time he has always been an obsessive vinyl collector, its in his blood, so now it's time for Fabrizio to share his own passion for music with the world.

Fast forward to summer 2019, Fabrizio made his Ibiza debut DJ'ing alongside DJ Harvey and Pete Gooding at La Torre and soon after Fabrizio finished his debut track 'This Way' which was premiered by Harvey at his now 'Mercury Rising' party at Pikes.

Many fans of golden-era hip-hop may already be familiar with 1994 gem 'Born To Live', a Buckwild-produced jam that also features vocal contributions from Pharoahe Monch and Roc Raida. The full vocal version - or at least the "Rap Edit" version prepared for radio stations - resides on the A side and sees Credle spitting atmospheric, largely positive rhymes atop a snappy, head-nodding beat, deep bass and some deliciously jazzy instrumental samples. Like his previous release, "The Space Jazz-Funk Experience", "The Planets Edit" sees the Canadian producer getting busy with an all time intergalactic jazz-funk classic. Review: A simple idea in an over complicated moment. Strip away aesthetics and be artist centric, sharing and explore collisions, sounds and genres. Step out of comfort zones to release a series of EPs of broad, challenging and deep music.

Starting with The Proposal by A Strange Wedding, this Lyon based producer from the Worst label, builds on their "modern style" slow trance to create a label anthem, a template. Stretched Arp, hypnotic bass and searing melody, underpinned by ocean wide kick. Merci for the perfect beginning.

Datasal are next, as this Gothenburg's trio's debut arrives. Acoustics (Miyazawa flute / Fender bass) and electronics (Roland RS-09 / Korg Mono) collide; prog rock meets post punk meets dance; outside organised compositions to improvise to the beat.

Side two leads back to the origin. 84PC, the dormant Tel Aviv collective that developed out of the city's Michatronix Crew (featuring Katzele, Naduve, Asaf and Yovav), return with a previously unreleased remix from Khidja. Their "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" moment is peak time perfection.

To close Barcelona's Iro Aka arrive with another debut. Having dispatched edits on Hard Fist and 44,100Hz Social Club, their bubbling 303 is a tender dreamtime finale that points ahead.

Review: Minimalsoul is proud to present its only vinyl release of the year 2020. Needless to say, the Covid-19 pandemic hit us hard as it did with many other players within the underground electronic music community. Therefore, we decided to concentrate our efforts on a single release this year, considering its unique feature being our 20th vinyl-catalog release.

"SueNo Mediterraneo" meets our primary goals of then and now: expanding our sonic horizon and telling a story in music that focuses on the human being, the soul, and the essential things to appreciate in life. "SueNo Mediterraneo" is a two-hand effort by the Italian DJ and producer Luca Averna (elsewhere also known as Jay Green) and the UK House veteran DJ and producer Chris Coco.

Luca moved to Ibiza permanently a few years back, firmly wanting to live the isle differently, appreciating the rustical life of the western hills with his beloved wife, dog, turntables, vinyl records, and drum machines. Chris is an Ibiza regular since the 90s, and during the last two decades, he has become one of the most respected figures within the island's Balearic scene.

After meeting a couple of years ago, they decided right away to produce music together, giving birth to this "SueNo Mediterraneo" project, with the desire to pay tribute to the 90s Italo Dream House, celebrate a newborn friendship, and their shared love for the White Island.

Review: The acclaimed Kito Jempere joins Cherrystones and DJN4 on the label for 2020, with an album full of international minds. Working with array of collaborators across a cast of friends including Jimi Tenor, Wolfram, Hard Ton, Lipelis, Rich Thair (Red Snapper), Ruf Dug, Cedric Gasaida (Azari & III) and many more, presenting this, his third long play.

A hail of freedom of thoughts and voices before these changed times, recorded and shared across continents. Kito - following releases with DFA, Lo Recordings, Bordello A Parigi, Hell Yeah and Duca Bianco - acts as curator rather than conductor, the idea not to transform the contributions but allow them absolute.

Sending music and receiving back, nothing was touched to keep the truth and honour. From Tokyo to London, Berlin to his base in St Petersburg, trusting the chosen artists led to a broad palette, as his 4/4 driven funk expands with Jazz horns to Motorik percussion, Avant-Reich vocals to White Isle melodies, J Pop Balearics to Chanson stories wrapped around Club memories.

A true world meeting, crossing borders and genres. An eye on the dance floor and week long chill outs. With remixes from the likes of Samo DJ, Lipelis, Cable Toy and more to follow, this is more than Yet Another Kito Jempere Album.

Review: The rarefied music of Ramuntcho Matta returns to Emotional Rescue with the first ever reissue of his album, 24 hrs. Recorded in 1986 - the same year as his influential Ecoute... - the album finds Matta working in a less playful, more experimental framework but with the same ground breaking results.

Again collaborating with a selection of accomplished players, 24 hrs sees Matta (electronics, guitars, marimba, melodica, sanza, vocals) work again with Cacau de Queiroz (flute and saxaphones) and Elie Meideros (vocals), plus Guillermo Fellove (trumpet), Ahmeed Kawa (tablas) and Polo Lombardo (konks) to deserne 6 pieces as part of a performance of Labyrinth by Joan Baixis' (backing vocals) Teatre de la Castra, Barcelona's acclaimed puppetry and visual troupe.

Centred as before, on Matta's guitar, the approach is playful, inventive, a foundation for a texture of musical aphorisms. Against a background of tabla, the elegance of versatility builds, intertwining the players via moods and textures of various traditions in a unique way that is his signature.

An album to be appreciated as one, this archival offered up additional surprises when the Master tapes were examined and so presented here is a longer form, unreleased version of Before Sunrise, as well as the previously unreleased Ramon (Digital only).

Review: Finest French jazzy beats "JAZZ LIBERATORZ", their 1st single "What's Real" featuring Aloe Blacc, who was also featured on Avicii, which was suddenly released in 2003 and later released on Stones Throw has finally become a 7-inch vinyl! B-side is a the single "Music Makes The World Go Round (2004)" featuring great talent of the West Coast underground "Declam", this is a special version which is remixed by 20Syl who is the MC / track maker of Hocus Pocus, France.

Review: Nearly a decade has passed since the last compilation that Balearic stalwart Moonboots had a hand in putting together (a brilliant contribution to Claremont 56's much-missed Originals series alongside fellow Mancunian selector Balearic Mike), so this fine set has been a long time coming. As you'd expect, his selections are spot on. Atmospheric, gentle and sun-kissed, the Aficionado co-founder's choices flit between contemporary gems (fine cuts from Begin, Blank & Jones and Natureboy), slept-on goodies full of glistening guitar motifs and heaps of delay (see July Skies' brilliant "The Softest Kisses") and older cuts that will be unknown to all but the most dedicated Balearic diggers, including a fine, loved-up track by Paul Hardcastle called "Moments in Time" that's worth the admission price on its own.

Review: Traditionally the liner notes of an album take on a kind of third-party address, where a writer is delivering their thoughts about how an album makes them feel without breaching that space where they are representing themselves or the moment in time directly to the reader. The goal is typically a kind of timelessness, but as we live in unprecedented times, unconventional methods take on new life, and hopefully importance. In the spirit of that idea... man, is this the kind of album we all need right now. So many of us feel like we're constantly walking a tightrope, are feeling like we can't unwind, are in genuine need of a few moments of respite. Every so often an album emerges from an artist that most likely did not realize when they were composing how timely the results would be, and Lofi Dimensions is exactly that kind of record. It doesn't really matter why it's coming when it is, what's important is that it's here, offering peace to the perturbed and inspiration for the downcast. The American Dollar have long been one of those artists operating in a kind of middle ground, a band with a long history of creating moving instrumental rock that has somehow avoided ever becoming synonymous with modern American post-rock acts. They retain a sort of autonomy in a valued position just outside the boundaries of classification. Blending electronic textures with moving guitar and keyboard melodies, their music has always traveled somewhere in the spaces between trip-hop, electronic, post-rock and ambient, and this inability to be defined is ultimately what sets them apart from the trappings of genre, allowing them to be whatever they want The American Dollar to be in a given moment, always on their terms.

Review: While Canadian composer/producer Galt MacDermot will always be most famous for composing the score to legendary musical "Hair", he was also responsible for some killer jazz, soul and funk records in his time, too. Take "Coffee Cold", for example. Originally tucked away on his obscure 1966 jazz-funk LP, Shapes of Rhythm, the track sees him adding fluid jazz-piano solos to a chunky breakbeat-driven instrumental workout. On the flip you'll find "Space", a jaunty - if strangely mixed - fusion of lolloping but crispy drum breaks and jousting Harpsichord and piano solos. The track is arguably best known for being sampled on Busta Rhymes's "Woo-Hah", though before that it featured on MacDermot's 1969 soundtrack album, Woman is Sweeter.

Review: The Atlanta based B Boy Breaks series continues with another drop of serious cuts to get beat jugglers, sample diggers and just straight up funk lovers going hog wild over the lashings of drum breaks. First up on the A side there's some widescreen, expansive beatdowns taking place with the massive "Show Me The Funk Breaks" - a fela esque sax screaching ,hammond organ swirling classic you already know from the many times it's been lifted for its treasured sonic ingredients. "Harder Breaks" on the flip is another monumental jam, presented here in instrumental form most recently used for the theme tune of a UK TV show . The evergreen groove is just crying out for someone with the skills to drop some serious turntablism all over this one.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Emotional Rescue are doing a fine job of sifting through the considerable Vox Populi! archives to present the finest sounds from this most adventurous of French collectives. The specific period focused on here is the post-1989 sound of the band exploring more explicit world influences with stunning results. At times delicate and folky, occasionally funky and elsewhere more experimental and heavy in its atmosphere, there's so much to absorb here as core members Kyrou, Mitra and Khalatbari work with a swelling cast of musicians to take trips to distant lands both real and imaginary.

Review: Tireless new music champion Giles Peterson continues to help platform musical talents from the world of nu jazz and broken beat with the latest instalment of his always great value Future Bubbles compilation. Supported by Arts Council England as always, this one opens with the spring time joys of Forest Law before heart aching Quko vocals make an indelible mark over tender piano playing. Elsewhere there is lush hip hop from KinKai and smooth jazz instrumentals from Iman Houssein n 'Slow Things Down.' This is a particularly delicate and deft instalment which seems fitting in these most troubled and turbulent times.
