Can't Stop Dancin'
  1. Can't Stop Dancin'
  2. Can't Stop Dancin' (instrumental)
Review: This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12" changing hands for significant sums online. Even if you're unfamiliar with it - and outside of record collecting circles, most people are - we'd recommend checking the sound clips of this first ever seven-inch reissue. 'Can't Stop Dancing' is particularly sweet and summery, with Jonnie 'Vibes' Lambert singing about his love of shaking his stuff atop spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. That tidy groove can be enjoyed further on the flipside instrumental mix, which makes excellent use of the original's female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.

  10. Vivien Vee - "Remember"
Review: Italo-Disco, (at times abbreviated as Italo) is a music genre which originated in Italy and was mainly produced from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. The origin strongly tied to marketing efforts of the ZYX record label, which began licensing and marketing the music outside Italy in 1982. The genre faded in the early 1990s.

Italo disco evolved from the then-current dance music (including hi-NRG) and developed into a diverse genre. The genre employs drum machines, synthesizers, occasionally vocoders and usually sung in English.

This compilation contains some of the long lost tracks of the genre restored for the first time on CD. Vivien Vee "Remember" and Capricorn "I Need Love," are early work by Italian pioneer Claudio Simonetti (Goblin). All tracks digitally remastered along with its booklet, the original artwork and the original recording and extended versions.

Review: The world has changed a lot since Junko Ohashi put out her 1984 compilation Magical. And never is that more clear than when looking at the album's front cover which depicts the twin towers still in situ in New York. Musically, though, the album is still on point for lovers of city pop, synth funk and 80s soul. It is one of the most recognised albums of the city pop genre with its sentimental chords, clean drum machine grooves and glowing synths all perfectly fitting in with the pure and innocent city pop aesthetic. The vocals are of course key tot hat - whatever Junko is singing about, she does it with the tones of an angel.

  12. Rudy's Midnight Machine - "Shifting Sands"
Review: Here at Faze Action HQ we have dived deep into the vaults to unearth some of our more Balearic sounds, with lost B sides and overlooked 2nd tracks. Showcasing the warmer and more melodic side to the label, we’ve included some chilled, poolside dance moments to accompany the summer ahead. Starting off with Faze Action and Zeke Manyika's “Chiiko”, which is rich in melody, as acoustic guitars and sweeping string arrangements fuse with Zeke's stunning vocal, sung in his native Shona. From here we move onto some Mediterranean Jazz Funk Vibes courtesy of Rudy's Midnight Machine, as the compilation criss crosses between more poolside dance floor friendly tracks, like Micky Milan's "C'est Une Bombe”, and more intimate and laid back sunset moments, such as the unreleased extended version of “Wind chimes", which appears on this compilation for the first time. We hope you enjoy the selection and the summer vibes.

Something Got A Hold On Me (feat Psychemagick remix)
  1. Something Got A Hold On Me
  2. Something Got A Hold On Me (Psychemagick Discomix)
Review: "The super rarity disco funk Something Got A Hold On Me by Chuck Armstrong gets its first ever official reissue, as Emotional Rescue continues its series of looking at some of the artists working with King Sporty’s Konduko label.

A long time South Florida native, Armstrong released numerous gospel toned soul 7”s for labels across the US, starting in 1962 with Cleveland’s Gemini Records before going on to release with Detroit’s Black Rock and Nashville’s Sound Stage 7.

First working with Noel Williams on the 1973 single, Black Foxy Woman, before releasing his now sought-after album Shakin’ Up in 1976, he returned to Konduko 3 years later to explore the shift to disco and boogie with William’s masterly production.

Coming in at 10 minutes of deep, bottom rattling disco funk, William’s teamed Armstrong’s vocals of hypnotising love with his in-house Root Rockers band to devastating result.

Their unrelenting groove and horns, plus Betty Wright & co’s backing vocals counteracting with William’s studio skills, is further exemplified in a wonderful dub laden Discomix by Psychemagik.

Having released a sneaky edit a few years ago, it seemed fitting to bring the duo of beat diggers, tape manipulators and world travelling DJs, into the “official” fold by commissioning a new rework that extends, loops and arranges this classic around a nice heavy dose of dub effects for daze. "

Review: Japanese vocalist Mariya Takeuchi originally recorded this one for her 1984 album Variety. It was only moderately successful at first with 10, 000 copies sold but in 2017 that changed when an eight minute remix was uploaded to YouTube and went on to pick up over 63 million views. It became one of the hits of the next few years and now makes it onto this 12" via Warner Japan. The joyousness and nostalgic 80s disco sounds all warm your heart and the original version is that bit more sensuous and sentimental.

Changes (reissue)
  1. Changes (Larry Levan remix)

Review: There are few synth-boogie records better than Imagination's 1982 club smash 'Changes', an impeccable chunk of soul-fired dancefloor brilliance rich in undulating synth-bass, mazy high-register solos, echo-laden piano riffs, warming chords and superb lead vocals from the effervescent Leee John. This reissue not only boasts the peerless Larry Levan remix - the finest version of the tune by far, and subtly dubby in the Paradise Garage legend's typical style - and the dub style Instrumental mix, but also Dimitri From Paris's impressive, stretched-out revision that first featured on the 2009 BBE compilation Night Dubbin. Basically, this 12" boasts all the versions you need of one of Imagination's greatest moments; should you not own them already, you really should pick up a copy.

Review: Adam Dubock first started recording as Love Drop in the mid 2000s, but his career only started gathering pace when he appeared on G.A.M.M and Home Taping is Killing Music in 2018. Following another outing on G.A.M.M earlier in 2021 - the rather good 'We Got To Get Our Shit Together' - he's decided to bring back his own 'Love Drops' rework series. This time round, the A-side is a breathlessly bumpin' affair in which winding sax lines, party atmosphere and snippets of a heavyweight disco-funk workout combine with a thumping-but-swinging house beat. Over on the flip, he delivers a locked-in, subtly tooled-up take on an electric piano-sporting jazz-funk gem that sits at the jazzier end of the spectrum. Solid stuff all told.

Mr K Edits Vol 7
Cat: MRKEDITS 007. Rel: 04 Feb 22
  1. Dance Wit' Me
  2. Glasshouse
Review: Has anyone counted the number of re-edits Danny Krivit has released as Mr K? Given that he's being doing it for longer than most of us have been alive, it must run into the hundreds. This is not a complaint though because each new 12" brings at least two more killer re-arrangements. The two on show here are, predictably, excellent. On the A-side ('Dance Wit' Me') he plays around with a killer, early '80s P-funk jam, gleefully making merry with the Funkadelic style squelchy bass, extended vibraphone solos, snappy drums, sparkling synths and party atmosphere. Flipside 'Glasshouse' is more in-keeping with some of his vintage edits. It sees him extend and tweak a heavyweight slab of disco-funk goodness from an unknown source.

Review: Bona-fide disco don and edit king Mr K offers up a sixth volume of his own edit series. As always this is golden ear disco tackle that brims with musical vitality. First comes 'What You Don't Know' which channels plenty of high speed 60s funk, with big horn stabs leading the way and busy drumming keeping those feet tapping. 'Big Time' is more freaky and playful. The toms flutter over a twisted bassline, vocals are steamy and sleazy disco loops add further fuel to this fiery dance floor filler.

Senor Paraiso
  1. Senor Paraiso

Review: Under the Beard In Dust alias, Leonid Lipelis has produced some of the most inspired re-edits released over the last decade, often turning chunks of long-forgotten Eastern European disco, boogie, synth-pop and AOR into quirky dancefloor gems. He's at it again here, launching the Crudo Rircordi imprint via a trio of eccentric, mid-80s treats. With its driving, kick-drum driven beat, addictive bassline, foreboding synthesizer motifs and Mediterranean guitars, 'Senor Paraiso' is a Balearic proto-house gem, while 'Kirkovmoroder' is a cheery chunk of AOR synth-pop turned into a tongue-in-cheek dancefloor treat. 'Coconut Paradise', meanwhile, is an Italo-disco style slab of peak-time campness straight from the top shelf.

Review: Last year Local Talk delivered a series of EPs featuring Felipe Gordon reworks of relatively recent gems. They've followed a similar formula on this similarly attractive EP, which contains a trio of killer Opolopo "tweaks" (that's remixes to you and me). On the A-side the Sweden-based Hungarian tackles Jamie 3:26 and Masalo's bluesy, gospel-tinged 'Testify', re-imagining it as a driving, percussive and bass-heavy workout rich in his own electric piano solos and jammed out riffs. On the reverse he transforms Soulphiction's 'Bizzness' into a trumpet-sporting, disco-dabbed organic house epic, before turning Dirtytwo's 'Moody' into a luscious fusion of deep house, jazz-funk and mid-90s New York organ-house.

Review: Gay anthems don't come louder or prouder than this evergreen gem from Patrick Cowley and Sylvester. Originally released in 1981, just a year before Cowley's tragic death but heralding the arrival of the Hi-NRG era of electronic disco, it's as brilliant and visionary now as it was at its inception. Now the classic gets a respectful re-touch from Purple Disco Machine, who offers up vocal and instrumental versions on the A side before three original versions stretch out on the flip. The difference between the remixes and originals is subtle, but with ingredients this potent, who's to complain when setting the party aflame?

Magic Source do a great job of musical transportation here particularly with 'Genius of Love' which is a riff on the Tam Tam girls classic. 4. Those Guys From Athens - "4 Your Love"
Review: If warming, glassy-eyed midtempo disco niceness is your thing, we'd heartily recommend this languid, sun-drenched edits offering from the Too Slow To Disco camp. It's packed to the rafters with toasty, afternoon-ready fare that's arguably best listened to while decked out in boat shoes, pastel-coloured shorts and a stripy t-shirt. HOLDTight steps up first with the head-nodding, saucer-eyed shuffle of future yacht disco classic 'Be My Love 2Nite', before Delfonic offers up a fine rearrangement of an obscure, breathy and seductive disco gem full of prominent Moog synth sounds, jaunty pianos and whispered vocals. 'Jorge's Pipa' by Jack Tennis is a fine, floor-friendly tweak of a disco-era Brazilian gem, while Those Guys From Athens' '4 Your Love' is a seductive disco slow jam straight from the top shelf.

Now it has been remastered and reissued again, but this time it is the original 1981 version that we're treated to, albeit with the English version of 'September Rain' included as a bonus. Review: Like many disco, boogie and jazz-funk heads, Z Records supremo Dave Lee has long been a fan of rubbery bass guitar, and in particular slap-bass. This EP, which boasts a quartet of his own remixes from the label's vaults, is a veritable slap-bass extravaganza. He sets the tone with a fabulous revision of Sunburst Band's Earth, Wind & Fire-inspired 'Mango Madness' that adds killer slap bass solos to a 'Brazilian Rhyme' style backing track, before offering up a superb, jazz-funk-fired soulful house revision of Bah Samba's 'Save Our Freedom'. There are camp upbeat bangers like the NRG disco pomp of 'Narcissist' with its acrobatic vocals, but also more deep cut and boogie tinged joints like 'Dress Down' which will light up any dance floor. Between them the duo cook up some nicely esoteric, tropical and exotic ocean-side Balearic disco grooves. Playful and funky, filled with library references, neat bass riffs and hook vocals. 'Swimming With Turtles' is a spaced out disco groove that takes you to the Mediterranean coast on a fusion of elector and hip hop beats. 3. Keep On Moving (NAD Discomix)
Review: Emotional Rescue returns for a third series of Konduko lost classics. After shining a light via the King Sporty and Noel Williams reissues, we're now looking at artists who released with the label, working closely with Williams to bring his unique sound to their performance. First up are Phillip James and Lloyd Campbell, a.k.a. The Blues Busters. One of the most successful vocal duos to come out of 1960's Jamaica. Progressing from cabaret shows to touring with Sam Cooke in the space of a year, they went on to record singles with the likes of Bluebeat, Treasure Isle and Trojan.

Moving onto New York, their Cooke inspired soul harmonies proved popular on albums for Dynamic Sounds and Scepter, before making the flight to Miami and letting the funk-machine that was Noel Williams loose. The resultant album, 'You've Got To Keep On Moving' offers the two highly prized songs; 'Do What You Want To Do To It' and 'Keep On Moving'.

These driving disco-funk bombs - backed by the in-house Deep Root Rockers band and Betty James on vocals - appear for the first time on 12". The B-side, as always, is given to a favoured producer - the welcomed back Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys / Noid) and his NAD moniker. He turns Keep On Moving in to an unrelenting long-form disco-dub that could just be an anthem for a new summer of love.

First up is a Michael Gray & Dr Packer remix of 'You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too' that is all stiff synth stabs and chunky disco funk, then the same pair remix the tiles 'Don't Make Me Wait' into something a little more groove driven and funky than the darker original.

  3. Billy Ocean - "Nights (Feel Like Gettin Down)" (unreleased Disco mix)
  4. Bell & James - "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)" (unreleased Disco club)
Review: We've not been able to ascertain whether or not the versions of the classic disco and boogie anthems featured on this first volume of the Weekender series are genuine "unreleased disco mixes" from the period, but they certainly sound like they are. What we get is two fine versions of Bell & James' superb sing-along 'Livin' It Up (Friday Night)' - a tastefully extended, DJ-friendly 'version' and a chunkier 'disco club' take that wisely emphasizes the groove and more percussive sections - plus a gradually building extension of Oliver Cheetham favourite 'Get Down Saturday Night' and a decent rearrangement of early Billy Ocean fave 'Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down)'. In other words, it's a quartet of peak-time disco treats for all those moments when only a familiar favourite will do.

  2. I Need Somebody To Love Tonight (7 Inch edit)
Review: Sylvester has too many hits to count, but 'Over And Over' has to be up there. Originally released in 1977, the timeless slice of uptempo disco funk was a mighty meeting of minds - any track penned by Ashford & Simpson is set for iconic status, and with Sylvester up front it's even more of a sure thing. Quite simply eternal. Of course, Sylvester's most famous collaborator was Patrick Cowley, whose magic touch is all over the wriggling, brooding synth boogie of 'I Need Somebody To Love Tonight', presented here as a compact 7" edit for a short sharp blast of perfection.

I Want You (feat NAD Remix)
  1. I Want You
  2. I Want You (dub)
  3. I Want You (NAD Discomix)
Review: "Following the collaborative releases with DJ Duckcomb, Emotional Rescue teams with “discodub” specialist NAD aka Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys) in the continual documentation of the crucial role played by the Caribbean diaspora in Britain’s music history.

Of the many who have made a mark, Clifton “Sonny” Roberts maybe one of the most unheralded. Upon arrival in the early migration from the Caribbean, Roberts used his carpentry vocation to build and operate the first Jamaican recording studio and then black owned record shop in the country.

Working alongside and sharing offices with a young Chris Blackwell and Trojan founder, Lee Gopthal, Roberts’ trailblazing through his Planetone and Orbitone labels were pivotal in bringing first Ska, then Reggae and on to Lovers Rock to prominence, as well as releasing influential Afrobeat and rising Disco sounds of the day.

It is on the sub-label Cartridge that the mega-rarity I Want You appeared in summer 1982. Teaming up with vocalist Joseph “Remy” Martin, the original 12” is a wonderful mixture of all their influences; soulful vocals, unrelenting boogie groove, afro keys, all pinned by reggae bass.

A heavily saturated Discomix is then created by Dan Tyler aka NAD. A dub masterclass with live desk filter passes and flanging, all running through spring reverb for a true Tubby disco-rockers ride, this is a sound system treasure with more to follow soon."

Review: Fouk member Johannes Peeman has delivered some superb solo EPs as Junktion, including killer outings on Times Are Ruff, Sleazy Beats Black Ops and, most regularly, OUTPLAY. Here he returns to the latter label with his first fresh 12" in almost 18 months. He hits the ground running with swinging, loose-limbed sample-house workout 'Just a Disco Thing', where jazzy bass, tight organ stabs, sparkling synths and funk vocal snippets cluster around a superb broken house rhythm, before opting for a chunkier, woozier deep house sound on 'Real To Me'. Over on the flip, 'I Got Somebody (Yeah Man)' is a rolling deep house warmer blessed with squelchy synth-bass, while 'Tribute' is a superb slab of detailed, musically expansive deep house with an exquisitely dreamy, head-in-the-clouds finish.

Review: Along with other reissues for The Ultimates, The Topics and Ricardo Marrero, P-VINE has been steadily reissuing the hard-to-find funk and soul gems on the short-lived 70s label TSG, and this latest reissue for Spice's 1976 record Let There Be Spice is of no exception and is packed with seasoned heat. It's a record that complements and blurs the lines of soul, funk and disco, and was once so rare that not even the band knew of its existence. Only in recent times have we been able to put together a picture of a group growing up in The Bronx with the burning desire to perform and light up the stage.

Review: Prolific American producer Steve Moore served up some low slung retro grooves under the Lovelock alias a decade ago on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal imprint. Burning Feeling receives a much needed second coming on London reissue label Be With, finally appearing on vinyl for the first time with a fresh remaster (supervised by Moore himself) and pressed as a double LP with stylish new black & gold artwork. Bright like neon throughout, with classic (Italo) disco motifs galore and late night boogie-down vibes abound. It's what the label best described themselves as 'the sound of Big Room Smooth' and that's pretty spot on!

URAL DUMPLINGS is the choice by the Moscovite new member of the cult. It is one of his favorite local dishes and the ideal companion while listening to his cold modular master piece. To heat things up on the release we invited Brazilian papi Pigmaliao who delivered a hot electroish remix.

Always remember: Ural dumplings taste better with vodka in the company of a dear neighbour.

  1. The Owl - "Groove Engine"
  2. C Da Afro - "I'm Gonna"
Review: A tasty pair of chunky, beefed and dubbed up disco delights courtesy of the Cardiology label and every bit as likely to get the heart rate pumping as the name would suggest. The Owl's 'Groove Engine' steps up to the breach on the A-side, the slightly slower of the pair but blessed with a thumping framework of four-to- the-floor sturdiness on which funky keys and an almost Afro vibe are tastfully and decoratively hung. Flip track 'I'm Gonna' by C Da Afro is constructed from more archetypically traditional old skool disco ingredients, from the Sister Sledge-esque female vocals to the shooting, strings. There's a nice amount of dub behaviour via the desk, enough to elevate it into orbit but not so much that the song elements of the track are obscured. Nice work all round.

Review: Not all dusty obscurities are worth revisiting, but library music ensemble Gruppo Sound's 1987 set Dreams For Sax most definitely is. Rooted in mid-80s jazz-funk, 'pages from Ceefax' easy listening, glossy electrofunk and early '80s disco, it's a genuinely joyous collection of jaunty instrumental workouts that should delight Balearic crate diggers, sample-hunting beat-makers and synth-loving disco heads. Given the title, you'll be unsurprised to find that saxophone features prominently, but it never dominates; in fact, the range of virtuoso piano solos and the loved-up nature of the Gruppo Sound's approach makes much more of a lasting impression.

Here the track returns in remixed form for 2022. David Penn kicks things off with a thrillingly uplifting piano house update, before Deeperlove opt for energetic drums, sweaty fills, echoing vocal snippets and a suitably gargantuan bassline Over on the flip, Jolyon Petch joins the dots between rubbery nu-disco and turn of the '80s electro-disco, while the Electrik Disco mix is a funky, revivalist disco-boogie treat laden with rubbery bass guitar, sparkling synths and Chic-style guitar licks.

It is a superb work of heart aching soul and modern disco from Brief Encounters who are best known for their stone cold classics 'Get A Good Feeling' and 'Just A Little Notion.' The first of those two features here along with many others gems such as the blue-eyed opener 'Where Will I Go,' deep soul of 'Don't Let Them Tell You' and bigger, horn led tunes like 'I'm So Satisfied.' It's an essential album for any and all soul lovers.

Review: Who doesn't love an obscure and hi NRG disco stomper from the mid-nineties? This one's been unearthed by the Bordello A Parigi crew and it was produced by the one and only Bobby Orlando. It has glistening disco arps and throwback drum machine sounds powering it along with a great female vocal singing lines like 'You can watch them making love on video.' The opening Digital Mix is the best for us but the V&S cut gets a little more pumping for the peak time so will also come in handy.

Review: Beatconductor brings some disco goodness and stylish 80s reworks to this first volume of Rekworks on an unknown label. The opener is a version of The Beatles's Come Together' that is slow and steady and sublime. There are more freewheeling and textural guitar licked grooves on 'Tenement Funster' while '1969' is another sleazy indie groove and 'Jailbreak' gets low slung and filthy with its rude guitars and pristine drum work. These are sure to bring a different kind of dirty disco vibe to any dance floor.
