MIS 002
MIS 002 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MIS 002.
  1. Aargh Money
  2. Little Looks
Review: Ater a strong start from Haners, the second drop on Misadventures steps once again into the neon-lit alleyway of finest Italo disco, with all the seductive sass you could ever wish for in a party 12". On the A side, 'Aargh Money' works around a seriously funked-up rhythm section and a choir extolling the virtues of working together. It's bombastic and elastic, just the right thing to get the limbs greased up for a heated hoedown. 'Little Looks' takes things rougher and tougher, with one of those Italo basslines so nasty it borders on proto-acid. The vocals are divine here too - smouldering come hither lines that amp up the intensity of the track to 11

Ron's Reworks Vol 3
Ron's Reworks Vol 3 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: RBJ 003. Rel: 17 Jul 20
  1. The Revelation
  2. Games You Playin'
  3. Bada-Bongo
Review: More from the mysterious Ron's Reworks series, which appears (though it has never been confirmed) to have been launched in tribute to late, great Chicago DJ Ron Hardy. The shadowy scalpel fiend (or fiends) behind the series begins volume three with "Revelation", a sparkling rearrangement of a life-affirming, piano-laden number that sits somewhere between jazz-funk, Latin jazz, spiritual jazz and disco. It is, beyond a shadow of doubt, one of the most positive tracks you'll hear all month. Elsewhere, "Games You Playing" is a synth-sporting slab of disco-funk heaviness, and "Bada Bongo" a percussive, break-driven, bongo-laden workout guaranteed to get limbs moving on the dancefloor.

Spacer Woman (remastered) (reissue)
Spacer Woman (remastered) (reissue) (limited hand-numbered 12")
Cat: MD 31802BLACK.
  1. Spacer Woman (vocal) (7:26)
  2. Spacer Woman (instrumental) (7:28)
Review: It would be fair to say that Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is timeless; an Italo-disco classic that has aged far better than many of its cheesy contemporaries. Recorded and released in 1983, the track is far more cosmic and intergalactic in feel than many of its synth-pop influenced contemporaries, doffing a cap to U.S electro as well as the electronic disco productions of Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley. It became something of a dancefloor anthem in Chicago and Detroit on the eve of the house and techno revolutions and remains one of the best electronic dance records of all time. Here both the vocal and instrumental versions are presented in re-mastered form on hand numbered vinyl. If you don't already own a copy, snap one of these up pronto.

  1. Good Times (7:12)
  2. Everybody Dance (7:49)
Review: The inaugural release from King Of Nothing's ridiculously collectable Star Time edit series, these Chic-shaping jams have been so popular it's been repressed. In case you were asleep, on another planet or unfortunately incarcerated when this first dropped, both "Good Times" and "Everybody Dance" are fully authentic edits, crafted straight from the original master tapes. Beefier drums, more spacious dynamics and some really cool remoulding of the vocal placements, KON has added to Chic's hit-smashing repertoire with subtlety and soul. A must-have.

  4. Paul Older - "Love"
Review: Super Spicy Records it's the first Mexican label in the Disco bizz to put out release on vinyl! Label boss, Monsieur Van Pratt, opens the ball with "Forever Funk". Percussions and funky rhodes lead the way into this funky romper. Sexy sax stabs and some lean horn
section trimmings.Igor Gonya and Crack D, two veritable Russian masters of Funk combine super powers and merge seamlessly to maximize the potential Funk output with "Two-Piece Orchestra".The Funk District follows with a boogie belter called "Watcha Gonna Do", that will cast you under its spell in a jiffy. Fast paced and rhythmically pound for pound, it grabs you in a gentle leading grip! Paul Older sports his flirting abilities with "Love". With caressing late- seventies vocals he takes the last dance. Equal measures of Love and Disco/Funk serves as main ingredients in this amorous conclusion to Super Spicy's first vinyl venture

Heavens In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac (reissue)
  1. Hot Chocolate - "Heavens In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac" (The Revenge edit) (7:23)
  2. Gwen McRae - "Keep The Fire Burnin" (The Revenge edit) (7:46)
Review: Second time around for The Revenge's brilliant re-edit of Hot Chocolate's "Heaven's In The Backseat of My Cadillac", which has become something of an in-demand item in the decade that has passed since its initial release on Jiscomusic. It remains one of the finest reworks of the modern era: a mid-tempo, sing-along stomper that's guaranteed to rock the party every time it's wheeled out. On the B-side you'll find something even more rare: the Scottish producer's never-before-properly-released (and much sought-after) take on Gwen McRae's "Keep The Fire Burning". This naturally retains all of the key ingredients of the classic original version, adding a rolling house beat and some suitably saucer-eyed chords to make an already loved-up cut even more seductive.

A Journey To Noi: It All Began In The East
  1. It All Began In The East (Sacred Rhythm version)
  2. A Dance For Gratitude (Joaquin's Congo Arts Drum version)
  3. It All Began In The East (The Cosmic Arts Meditational mix)
Review: Two years ago, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell donned his occasional Mental Remedy alias and offered up "A Journey To Noi", a decidedly spiritual album that mixed Japanese instrumentation with his usual ambient and deep house sounds. On this 12", Clausell offers up some heady new interpretations that - like much of his work over the last decade - are built around the percussive power of African rhythms. The opening "Sacred Rhythm Version" of "It All Began In The East" is particularly potent, with Clausell cloaking a warm, organic and percussive Afro-house beat in distinctive Japanese Koto melodies and jazzy piano flourishes. We'd also recommend the formidably heavy, drum-laden rework of "Dance For Gratitude", whose Latin American bassline and simmering synth-strings are almost as addictive as the weighty groove they sit upon.

  1. Planets Of Life (Kon & Flaunt Scorpio Groove) (6:21)
  2. Groove Game (Flaunt Edwards edit) (5:28)
  3. Overweight (J Rocc edit) (6:27)
Review: For the uninitiated, Flaunt Edwards is one of the many artistic aliases of long-serving crate digger, DJ and beat-maker Jason Jackson AKA J-Rocc. This 12" sees him transform a trio of classic cuts from the disco and boogie era, two of which should be familiar to those with a love of late '70s and early '80s American dance music. Jackson first joins forces with pal Kon on "Planets of Life", a dubbed-out and gently beefed-up rearrangement of a killer Whispers cut that famously formed the basis of a heady house cut by The Revenge way back in 2009. Flipside opener "Groove Game" delivers a fuzzy and stomping interpretation of a weighty Hamilton Bohannon classic, while "Overweight" is a fine revision of a jaunty, horn-heavy disco delight.

Cat: BR 005. Rel: 27 Jul 20
  1. This Poem (Roots Unit alternative version)
  2. Trenchtown Double Down (Roots Unit Stepping Razor version)
Review: "Black Rox returns with installment no.5 in the series.

Their continuing voyage in bringing another set of unearthed-mother-earthed flavoured gems remains their goal.

Roots Unit are - once again - on the cutting and splicing side of things, this time tackling 2 rockets with afro-centric house leanings.

First up is 'This Poem', an alternative house take on the tune made most famous by Bobby Konders via his initial sample source, way back when. Percussive house beats mixed with deep stringy chords intertwined by THAT poem. Simple, effective and one that will lift many a dance floor.

Secondly we have 'Trenchtown Double Down'. This is an altogether moodier dub-house affair that sees Jamaica go to a lost New York garage party circa 1993. "

Found A Cure (Remixed With Love By Joey Negro) (reissue)
  1. Found A Cure (Joey Negro Found A dub mix) (6:41)
  2. Love Don't Make It Right (Joey Negro mix) (6:35)
Review: When it comes to delivering fresh interpretations of classic disco hits in the traditional Tom Moulton style (I.E use the original multi-track parts and only add limited new elements), there are few producers quite as adept as Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro. Further proof arrives here in the shape of two fresh revisions of vintage Ashford and Simpson gems. On side A Lee tackles "Found a Cure", delivering a driving vocal dub that wisely emphasizes the duo's sublime vocals and the track's inherent soaring disco instrumentation. He changes tack slightly on side B, offering a hands-in-the-air disco-house rub of "Love Don't Make It Right" that's more feelgood than a sloppy hug from your partner and twice as exciting.

Only You Baby (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CARDIOLOGY 05. Rel: 10 Aug 20
  1. Only You Baby
  2. You
  3. Got To Dance
  4. Fever
Review: A new Cardiology must mean more surefire disco, boogie and funk heat given an artful nudge, nip n' tuck. These four pearlers will be thoroughly useful tools in your utility belt, leading in with the singalong hook of "Only You Baby" which sports a healthy dose of boogie synth work. "You" by way of contrast is a strictly organic funker looped up to perfection. "Got To Dance" takes the tempo down but piles on the groove for this heavy dose of soul, and then "Fever" takes things out on a rolling trip of percussion and classic licks that'll have you sweating in no time at all.

Birds (reissue) (12" limited to 250 copies)
Cat: C56 030.
  1. Birds (7:26)
  2. Birds (Tiago remix) (10:08)
Review: Claremont 56 continue to disregard the genre boundaries - preferring instead to give good music the attention it deserves - as their latest looker of a twelve inch presents us the sounds of Torn Sail. Fronted by Smith & Mudd vocalist Huw Costin, Torn Sail go all 60s West Coast rock on us with the gloriously rich sounds of "Birds". From its acoustic beginnings the track gradually unfurls into a delightful groove embellished by soothing vocal harmonies. It's almost a thankless task enlisting anyone to try and remix what sounds like a perfect song, but Claremont 56 obviously chose right in requesting the services of Tiago. In the Portuguese producer's hands "Birds" is transformed into a heavily psychedelic freakout which gently develops into a kraut rock behemoth filled with swathes of heavy organ vibes. Containing several shifts in momentum - including a glorious half speed finish - this is a truly stunning remix which left our jaws occupying the floor!

I Get Lifted (Record Store Day 2015) (reissue)
  1. I Get Lifted (3:02)
  2. I Get Lifted (Todd Terje edit) (7:09)
Review: A limited yellow vinyl funk odyssey from Record Store Day, "I Get Lifted" is taken from KC & The Sunshine Band's second album (1975) Still sounding shiny and floor-minded, the original stands the test of time incredibly well. Todd Terje's edit, however, takes it to another level; upping the tempo (and, possibly, the key), he's extended the right places, added a little more emphasis on the kicks and made sure we can't miss the breakdowns and instrumental sections.
