Review: For the first time in a decade and a half, Kansas City-born multi-instrumentalist Nathan Davis is having his If album reissued. It first came on the respected educator and musician's own Tomorrow International label in 1976 but now arrives on Japanese favourite P-VINE. Any true jazz-funk and rare groover head will be familiar with its unique charms and anyone not soon will be in love. Only 100 copies of this were pressed up back in the day which is why it has become so hard to find and such a cult classic. Do not sleep on this one.

Review: A whole bunch of Weldon Irvine albums are being remastered and reissued at the moment, which will be music to the ears of spiritual jazz fans - literally. The American composer and pianists was one of the big names of his time and reals don labels like RCA and Strata-East as well as his own label. Young Gifted & Broke has never been on vinyl before as the recordings were only discovered in the early 2010s. It was a musical that was released in 1977 and inspired by the Black Civil Rights anthem 'Young, Gifted and Black,' which Weldon had written with Nina Simone. Talents like Marcus Miller joined the recordings which as can now be heard are magnificent to say the least.

Formed in 1973 by bassist Berthwel Maphumulo, Mac Mathunjwa on organ, Innocent Mathunjwa on drums, Joe Zikhali on guitar, Thema Maboneng was released in 1975, before being almost immediately forgotten. However, a recent rediscovery by diggers and curators Kon & Amir, for their lauded Off The Track Volume Two: Queens compilation, sparked a renewed interest; the South African four-piece shared equal responsibility in writing and arranging these six instrumentals, which are tight and full, and come replete with Hammonds, well-surrounded guitar, and cross-sticking snare hits.

Review: Led by Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland, the Clarke-Boland Sextet was made up of further musical talents from across Europe and the United States such as Boland, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Joe Harris, and Sadi. The group played a pivotal role in shaping the European jazz scene of the 60s, never more so than with their timeless Music For The Small Hours record in 1967. It takes in an array of influences and includes standards like Burt Bacharach's 'Wives & Lovers' as well as more Brazilian and Afro-Cuban groovers like Luiz Bonfa's 'Ebony Samba'. Review: The debut album from Mississippi soul legends The Natural Four, Good Vibes! deserves this full reissue on Wax Trader, which puts a dent in its former obscurity and rareness. An early LP incarnation of Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January and Al Bowden in unison, the album delivers the posi-vibes it promises and then some. But despite its commitment to a good time, the Four don't fall prey to the idea that such vibes necessarily mean avoiding of slow jams; indeed, star cuts like 'Why Should We Stop Now' are as pleading and longing in tone as they are premonitory of the relationship at hand going well; things get even wild-Wester on 'Message From A Black Man', amounting to a multifaceted take on the stated good vibe.

Review: Before his breakthrough as a solo artist, Luther Vandross was part of the quintet singing group Luther along with Anthony Hinton, Diane Sumler, Theresa V. Reed, and Christine Wiltshire. The group recorded two albums with little success. By the time This Close To You was recorded, Luther took the lead in the band with his standout voice and showmanship. A natural frontman, the Luther project closed as he naturally went solo shortly after and signing to Epic records. Luther later on bought the rights to the first two albums and after man years of rumors, they are now reissued. Recorded and released in 1977, the album is blend of soul, disco and ballads. Luther Vandross fans will rejoice at discovering and rediscovering him front some more disco sounds. The album is a great glimpse into his legendary voice in its infancy.

Initially working as a guitar player for such greats as Sonny Boy Williamson & Etta James, Impulse! eventually offered Mel Brown the chance to record his own material. Recorded in 1967 in Hollywood, CA, Brown amassed a group of session musicians who had previously played with Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye, and Dizzy Gillespie. Much of the album was arranged by Oliver Nelson, who worked with Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith and more. His touch is felt all over the record and helps solidify the journey; these sessions reflect the Sunset Strip and the energy of late 60s Los Angeles so accurately that you can almost hear the go-go boots hit the floor.

Review: Canada's famously vibrant funk scene has given rise to many gems over the years and now one of them is getting a reissue on P-Vine complete with an obi-strip. The Sidewinders' much-coveted album, Flatfoot Hustlin' is a real gem that emanates the spirit of deep-rooted funk. Famously it was recorded in the same studio as Professor Lett and Study's Love Serenade which further details about it have long been unknown and mysterious. That has only added to its allure and appeal amongst the rare groove community but of course, the music itself is the real draw. Featured tracks like 'I Like To Dance' and 'Flat Foot Hustli'' cannot fail to ignite dancefloors, while 'Time For Loving' is a more smooth groove and 'Gift to the Sun' gets nice and heavy making this an essential cop for funk aficionados.

Review: Bobby Hutcherson's Total Eclipse is a seminal work in the post-bop jazz genre. Released in 1968, the album showcases Hutcherson's masterful vibraphone playing and his innovative approach to composition which creates a sense of mystery and wonder. 'Herzog' is a up-tempo number, with Hutcherson's vibraphone taking a more prominent role. The track features some blistering solos from Hutcherson and his fellow musicians, including pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Ron Carter. 'Matrix' is a complex and challenging piece that showcases Hutcherson's experimental side. The track features a variety of odd time signatures and dissonant harmonies, but Hutcherson's playing is always melodic and accessible. 'Same Shame' is a more traditional jazz ballad, with Hutcherson's vibraphone playing taking a more subdued role. The track is a showcase for Hutcherson's lyrical and sensitive playing. The album closes with 'Pompeian,' a haunting and atmospheric piece that recalls the title track. Total Eclipse is a masterpiece of post-bop jazz.

Review: This is the first reissue of the much-anticipated compilation gathering together many gems from the Louisiana born singer Bettye Swann. This compilation gathers and enormous 22 tracks from the career to highlight her career. Bettye rose to to acclaim with her 1967 soul classic 'Make Me Yours' which not only climbed to #21 on the Billboard 100 but also became a #1 on the rhythm and blues charts. Once she signed to Capital record a few years later, she had a second top 40 hit with 'Don't Touch Me'. The compilation has so many underrated songs from her career that just didn't get the attention that they deserved - see the excellent 'Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)' and the amazing cover of 'Tell it like it is'. Review: Jasmine Myra's sophomore album Rising is apparently named after her current status in the UK jazz game. She deserves the recognition: the saxophonist, composer and bandleader lays down a beautiful six-piece project here, providing a brilliant dialgue to contrast her first LP Horizons. Myra describes Rising as a "reflection of a period of my life", following on as the logical continuation from Horizons, which was "all about my experience during lockdown, and entailed overcoming my struggles with mental health". Rising, the sonic reply, charts Myra's experience of continuing to bulld her self-confidence. Through its glistening, refractive, yet soft progressions, demarked by detailed bell acoutrements and mutedly ascendant sax progressions from the star herself, the likes of 'Rising', 'Glimmers' and 'From Embers' make for fantastic spirited listens.

Review: Pan-African supergroup Ibibio Sound Machine return with Pull The Rope, a tonal shift compared to their earlier full-lengths like Electricity; this one veers more on the side of acid house, highlife and disco, compared to the more histrionic electronics of the eponymous sound machine of that album, as well as Uyai and Doko Mien, heard thus far. As heard on the lead single 'Got To Be Who U Are', we are importuned with the command to be ourselves, as everybody else is already taken; such an injunction is met with a driving, time-of-your-life, weighty acid house production, which comes to neat effect when paired with Eno Williams' passionate soul vocals.

Review: Recorded and released in The Netherlands by Gerry Teekens for his Criss Cross label in 1985, Chet's Choice marked one of the best studio albums from Chet Baker's final years. He would die in The Netherlands after falling from the window of his hotel room in Amsterdam on May 13, 1988. Chet's Choice presents Baker, beautifully captured in stereo, singing and playing the trumpet in an intimate trio format with guitarist Philip Catherine (born in England but raised in Belgium, Chet frequently worked with him from 1983 to 1988) and Belgian bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on most of the tracks (three tunes were taped during a second session with Dutch bassist Hein van de Geijn). This expanded edition presents the full seven tunes from the original album plus three songs that only previously appeared on the CD edition of Chet's Choice, as well as five amazing never before heard alternate takes, which add nearly 40 minutes of unreleased music to Chet Baker's superb catalogue.
