Selassie Parts 1 & 2
Selassie Parts 1 & 2 (7" limited to 350 copies)
Cat: MSH 109. Rel: 29 Jan 21
  1. Selassie (part 1)
  2. Selassie (part 2)
Review: The first release from the Ethiopian Brothers, 2019's 'Ashadwa', was a brilliant slab of Afro-funk that many erroneously believed to be a long-lost classic. In fact, it was the work of a contemporary producer associated with Jalepeno Records. Regardless, the record sounded authentically old and dusty, as does this equally as inspired sequel. 'Selassie (Part 1)' sets the tone, with the producer and his session musicians serving up a righteous Afro-funk workout rich in Tony Allen influenced drum-breaks, flanged guitars, raw tenor sax lines and killer bass guitar. Even more righteous is the flipside 'Part 2' version that showcases more snaking sax lines and some seriously infectious, chant-like vocals.

Colombian Latin Funk & Salsa Gems: Volume 3
Cat: MUKAT 079. Rel: 28 May 21
  1. Adolfo Echeverria Y Su Orquesta - "Sabroso Bacalao"
  2. Fruko Y Sus Tesos - "Mi Verdadero Son"
Review: Mukatsuku toe tipping into Colombian latin funk & Salsa continues with volume 3 of the series with 2 tracks lifted again from the Disco Fuentes back catalogue..... Witness fiery piano of Hugo Molinares with the monster guaguanco track 'Sabroso Bacalao' from Adolfo Echeverria Y Su Orquesta . Those key led breakdowns and Timbales florishes offset by punchy brass are a dancefloor ammunition like no other ! On the flip Fruko (the third appearance on Mukatsuku ) kicks off with more of the same ... upfront piano notes, infectious vocals, funky percussion and brass stabs galore. If you can sit still to this then you are obviously tied to your chair.

Review: Some hush-hush, no-nonsense action here from Adam 'Admin' Wickens on a highly limited, info-free white label 12". The Bristol-based producer is in deliciously jazzy deep house mode, crafting two irrepressibly breezy gems out of elements of classic jazz cuts and his own innate musicality. A-side 'Step Into The Light' is particularly good, with Wickens layering a dusty deep house groove with fluid piano motifs, distant horn samples and warming bass. 'Reflect & Heal' is similarly sunny and spiritual in feel, albeit with denser and more energetic percussion, deeper piano chords and some rather lovely clarinet solo action. Simply sumptuous.

El Amor Es Un Bicho (reissue)
El Amor Es Un Bicho (reissue) (limited hand-numbered 7")
Cat: MAD 026R.
  1. El Amor Es Un Bicho (2:29)
  2. El Diablo (2:43)
Review: The story behind this Henry Nelson record is a remarkable one. The Colombian artist recorded the two Latin soul tracks featured on it after moving to Spain in the late 1960s. As no Spanish labels liked what they heard, he was forced to return to South America and the songs were eventually released on an obscure Argentinian label in 1969. Original copies are a genuine rarity, hence this Madmua reissue. A-side 'Al Emor Es Un Bicho' is wonderfully fiery and fierce, with Nelson and his musical collaborators brilliantly fusing elements of psych-rock, funk, soul and British beat music. Flipside 'El Diablo', a confirmed Latin funk stomper blessed with a sing-along chorus, is equally as righteous.

Gumba Fire: Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa (B-STOCK)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Soundway's latest essential collection successfully shines a light on synth-heavy South African music of the 1980s, chronicling local musicians and producers' attempts to create their own hybrid forms of boogie, synth-soul and bubblegum pop. Naturally, compilers Miles Cleret and DJ Okapi have done a brilliant job bringing together killer cuts that showcase the best of South Africa's '80s synth sounds, while at the same time ensuring a high ratio of rare and hard-to-treats. While some of the tracks genuinely sound like they could have been made in New York, London or L.A, there are plenty of others that include multiple instrumental nods to a diverse range of contemporaneous South African sounds. Crucially, the music is superb throughout.

Review: Rocksteady Disco kicks off 2021 with an EP of timeless music from their friends the Sol Power All-Stars from Washington DC. The Sol Power All-Stars' impeccable production carries the release, with drums abound to lift the heaviest of spirits. They've tapped in a heavyweight cast of featured guests, from Brooklynite vocalist Amma Whatt (Nate Smith's Kinfolk); Nigerian Afrobeat/psych rock/Juju legend Frank Martins (Elcados, Shina Peters, Tyna Onwudiwem, and many more); Ibibio Sound Machine's iconic horn section Scott Baylis & Max Grunhard; and one of DC's most important Afro-Jazz horn players Besufekad Tadesse.
