Review: It's the album that redefined ambient music, not least for a generation of parasympathetic ravers. Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II marked a stylistic shift away from the first edition in the infamous ambient LP 'series', Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Volume II differed substantially; this time, there would be no 'techno' addendum to 'ambient', and all tracks thereupon would lack the usual indulgence of beats, however easy-on-the-ears these had been beforehand. Known for its many numbered tracks - which on the original edition, rather than track names, denoted references to images of natural forms, textures and geologic readymades, all bathed in orange, and from which fans had to infer the written names - this expanded edition stays faithful to this origin. Even so, it adds two unreleased D. Jamesian treats - 'th1 [evnslower]' and a reversed version of 'Rhubarb' - as well as a the previously vinyl only '#19'.

Review: 'Technopera' is the debut EP by Ampersounds (Fred Falke and Zen Freeman), featuring Rufus Wainwright. It's a bold claim for a debut electro-house EP to feature vocals by such a renowned artist. But Fred Falke nad Zen Freeman are no rookies either, having won the hearts of many a house and techno reveller in France, Europe and beyond since the 1990s. Ampersounds and the Wainwright collab was made manifest after an intellectual chat the trio shared over some highfalutin poetry; fittingly, Technopera has an air of intellectualism about it, with highlights like 'Solitude Of Heart' portraying a downtrodden mood blended with smart production and nods to '80s tropes.

Review: The Expanded Edition of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II is here; this is a reissue of an album that still serves as one of the ideasthetic backbones to most music fans' idea of 'ambient music' at large. A lesser-known fact is that when James recorded the record, he had concurrently undergone a period of lucid dreaming, and in this vivid lucid state, had heard many sounds akin to those heard on this record, which he had subsequently attempted to recreate. The sound of dreaming is usually an ineffable thing, but not to Aphex Twin, who had perhaps been one of the first to articulate dreams' bleary, smeary, selective and dream-distorted sonic quality. Many different interpreters have harped on this record, some hearing a 'cold islationism' in it, others a purer bliss; what is most evident is this one helped popularise ambient music in a formal, less connotative way, and continues to do so even today.

Review: As the title suggests, Broadcast have collected all their demo recordings made between 2000 and 2006 and compiled them onto a single 14-track record. But that's not the main piece of news: sadly, this one marks the end of releasing from the band, tying the bow on an game-changing career to say the least. Many of these tender tidbits were worked into finished productions appearing on Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon; it's an impressive flex to be able to flaunt your one-offs and pack them onto a single recorded finale. What's more, the connotations aroused by form - demos - as well as the sonic content of these gems plays nicely up to Broadcast's now well-established aesthetic, which is one for the ages, to be sure. The album also includes two songs discovered by James after bandmate Trish's passing: 'Come Back To Me' and 'Please Call To Book' which was her response to Broadcast's 2006 'Let's Write A Song' project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song.

Review: Fred Again's new LP Ten Days is decidedly minimal in both visual and sonic feel, making for a well-put-together exercise in chic dance summeriness, one that manages to feel, paradoxically, nostalgic for the present moment. If the crux of Fred Again's appeal rests our vicarious enjoyment of his evidently voracious enjoyment of life, then this is equally as reflective in the music here, with 'Adore U' skimming through pitch-warped vocals sampled from Obongjayar's live performance dedicated to his sister and mum, as if to immortalise them in a rush of frenetics and lightness of being, and 'Ten' equally playing up the bare skeletals of snap-rims, warbly samples and ever more pitch-effecting, this time on Jozzy's vocals. Less earnest than his outing with Brian Eno, and more dedicable purely to the young adult gaieties of summer, Ten Days marks a little over a weeks' worth of fun, tinged with a tiny hint of melancholy.

Review: The production duo of Ralf Dorper and Michael Mertens make up the core of Propaganda, the longstanding EBM, industrial and all-round electronic production duo from Dusseldorf. Formed in 1982 in the associative fallout of similar musical outfits such as Die Krupps, Propaganda enjoyed a decade as purveyors of a historically important sound; as the Cold War raged, so too did the morbid promise of a pitiless musical annihilation by EBM and industrial pop, the psychopathic sonic expression of being churned up twixt the gears of a death machine which one had no part in making. But Propaganda's sound was never so hellishly 'industrial' as such, instead demonstrating a greater willingness than most to meld EBM with synth-pop, in a way that did not sound grave but graceful. In this sense, their more sensual sound is indicative of the "diffuse spectacle" of the way propaganda works in the present day, one that is not merely authoritative and prohibitive (as might be imagined in an Orwellian nightmare), but rather seductive, automatic, diffuse in the population rather than ordained by a higher conniving power. This new, notably self-titled record sounds to know this: its robotic, yet pristinely recorded vocal tones by Claudia Bruecken and Betsi Miller - its brave new pleasure-worlds of vocoded, yet luridly cyborgish vocal parts - as well as enticingly smooth and sawn-off productions throughout, would seem to relish in the suffusive propagandistic message of today. That is, we can have, and all are, part of the fun. They've not put out a new full-length record since 1991, perhaps the reemergence of Propaganda is a sign of the times.

Review: Markus Guentner returns to his longstanding label, A Strangely Isolated Place, following the triptych of Theia, Empire, and Extropy, presenting eight inspiring collaborations on Kontrapunkt. The longstanding cinematic ambient artist adds to a string of collaborative records with a high-octane octet of dialogic fragments, all of which err towards ethereal. Karen Vogt, Arovane, Hollie Kenniff and Abul Mogard all star on the record, suggesting neoclassical music shouldn't be kept so anaclitically divided between artists; that the form of remixing and featuring should be borrowed from pop and dance music. Best among this supreme stock of sound-vapour has to be the naturalistic ablations heard on 'Ancestral Images' or the august drumrolls and big hits of 'Utopian Fragments'.

Growing up in Harrow during the 70s and 80s, Biswas was influenced by David Rodigan's dub shows and the post-punk experimentation of the era. His eclectic tastes spanned punk, free jazz, noise, and Indian Classical music, which he fused with his ever expanding record collection. By 1987, his music prefigured what would become techno and gave rise to this album which was released in 1994 by Rising High Records. Science, Art And Ritual now celebrates its 30th anniversary with a deluxe 3LP reissue featuring restored tracks and some bonus new material.

Review: The late SOPHIE Xeon shaped modern pop and experimental music with her Grammy-nominated 'Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' and 'PRODUCT' series in the mid-to-late 2010s, working alongside A.G. Cook and PC Music to create some of the most futuristic and bubbly music. Xeon produced for Vince Staples, Madonna and Charli XCX before her sudden passing in January 2021, she is known for her unique, textural production style that has even been featured in McDonald's adverts (of all places). Her first posthumous project has been lovingly brought to fruition by her family estate run by her brother, handpicking songs he says she would've wanted to be released that were nearly finished. The first track 'Reason Why', featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, has long been a fan favourite since live performances and leaked demos hit SoundCloud over four years ago. It's a spacious and squeaky clean dance track, one of many examples SOPHIE produced, showcasing what pop's future could look like.

Review: Dan Andrei is arguably one of the finest selectors of this generation and a master minimal producer who makes electronic music of the highest order. His latest outing sees him inaugurating his own brand-new label alongside Claudiu Stefan. Rainbow Hill is a platform for their more personal ideas and starts with four more of Andrei's brilliantly deft yet dramatic tracks. 'Numan's Touch' kicks off with rolling drums and bass and a fine eco-system of cosmic pads, twinkling keys and fizzing synths that are theatrical and involving. 'What Else?' then gets darker and more intense with heady loops and wispy pads, and again the ante is upped and the darkness pervades once more on the tense and taught dub-tech roller 'This Is What I See'. Last of all, 'Bluer Than Ever' floats above the floor with airy pads and radiant chords. A perfect 5am vibe.

Review: Music For Bus Stations by Rod Modell draws an explicit parallel between the act of vesseled, bodily transportation and psychogenic listening, implicitly arguing that both are forms of affirming the importance of elsewhere. Realising that making one's own noise is sometimes an unnecessary reaction, his liner notes read: "There is no reason for resistance. Let's be silent. The noise around us is quite good." Waiting and deep listening thus become central themes of this LP, inspired by the modernist designs of bus stations dotting the many outer metropolitan areas of such staple European cities as Pzorzheim, Rio Maior and Hamburg. With its shifting statics and coarse electric ambiences providing equal parts tension and release, Modell emphasises attention paid, not reflexive avoidance of or reaction to, the transient environment one finds oneself in.

Review: Wewantsounds has put together a re-release of the late, great Ryuichi Sakamoto's classic album Coda, which was originally issued in his native Japan in 1983. This album is a solo piano rendition of the seminal Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence soundtrack and has never been available outside Japan until now. It finds legendary composer Sakamoto perform acoustic piano interpretations of his iconic themes including the classic title track and 'Germination,' which later featured in the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack. Remastered by Seigen Ono's Saidera Mastering studio in Tokyo, this reissue includes the original artwork and a four page insert with new liner notes by Andy Beta.

Review: Among the figureheads of French disco, Bernard Fevre, better known as Black Devil, probably had the shortest-lived career, but was among the brightest minds of them all. Although his first album Disco Club, released in 1978, went unnoticed at first, it has since become a must-have, a collector's item which has led a lot of listeners to further investigate his extensive work. Fevre experimented with such a wide gamut of styles that it has been hard not to lose track; though perhaps one such aide l'equilibre is this newest compilation/lookback record, Space Oddities 1976-1985. Spanning a huge swathe of Fevre's records, some more touted and others more waylaid, this compilation can only begin to help us firmly grasp the cosmic breadth of the artist's work, some of which is indubitably club-bound, some of which is comparatively cinematic and scenic. Here's hoping Giordano Bruno was wrong about the open universe - Fevre's explorations are so expansive that they verge on boundlessness.

Review: Hana Rani presents Nostalgia, a live album recorded at Witold Lutoslawski's Concert Studio at the Polish Radio in Warsaw, captured in breath-held detail, shortly after the release of her third solo album Ghosts. An homage to the Polish radio station, Rani describes the nine-piece record as a response to her visitation in 2018, just before the release of her debut record Esja. Review: Past Inside the Present looks back to a classic ambient work here from James Bernard. His 1994 ambient masterpiece, Atmospherics, has been newly remastered and paired with a fresh track-by-track reinterpretation by bvdub, a friend and collaborator, for this new reissue. A lot has changed in terms of music and technology (and much more, to be honest) since the original version was made and these new versions were crafted by the timeless musicianship and textural richness still shine through. Amongst those who know, Atmospherics achieved cult status during the rise of ambient music and was created using only a keyboard, sequencer, 12-bit sampler, drum machine, and bass guitar. Review: Newly, radically reimagined remixes created from John Lennon's classic song, Mind Games. These nine Meditation Mixes craft their own space while maintaining firm and authentic roots in John Lennon's original recording. Each have been radically altered, slowed down and extended, ranging from five to ten to over 33 minutes, allowing the soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing deep listening experience. Four tracks are presented as binaural versions which each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Named 'Mind', 'Space', 'Spirit' and 'Love', these exploit the response of the ear to left and right frequencies, which constructively combine to produce a new frequency, which in turn, as they say, activates beneficial brain patterns. Produced by Sean Lennon, these contemporary Lennon versions aim to positively impact the contemporary anxiety-racked listener, whose appetite for deep listening has only understandably increased in recent years.

Review: Ever reticent contemporary ambient techno artist Nthng shares 'Two People', their latest EP to hit the shelves. Building on their always wordless sound - one native to a certain "mysterious" corner of the techno world, one that implies that words are insufficient in capturing both breadth and depth of sound - 'Two People' is a minimally stirring EP, one that relies on the bare associations of just two visual indicators of theme: snow, unity. Imprinted on the planar white surface shown on the front cover is a lowercase trace of the title track, which, in sound, hears a vocal recollective of a baby's gurgle, and a lonesome pad lilt that only ever so much as teases a movement, ghosted by the absence of (and so haunted by the promise of) a beat. When beats do interpellate the scape, they do with the textural quality of stalactites, breaking and dropping to the floor in step on both 'Echo Trak' and 'In Statik'. Nthng's filtrated percussion and long-release tails serve to dust the surface snow off many ambered, glaciered memories, preserved in the unspelunked caves of an antarctic psyche. Closer 'Don't Be Scared' plods forth, steppers style, with the stridency of an epiphanic polar walkabout, its swells contrasting to the many radiophonic FX peppering the mix: they give the sense of the odd "do you read me?", grounding the far-yonder miracle pads in telecommunicated reassurances from the outpost.

Review: The limited edition blue vinyl edition of Propaganda's self-titled record, and their first in 30 or so years. Formed by Ralf Dorper, former synthesist with electro-punks Die Krupps, and Andreas Thein, Propaganda enjoyed a string of delicious mid-to-late 80s hits before unfortunately dropping off the map in order to escape an unlucky string of allegedly questionable recording contracts. Now back at the forefront three decades on, there's an uncanny sense of no time having passed at all despite it; though their sound is modernised here to the point of a pristine clarity, the pair's ever-present preferred themes - techno-lust and futurological fervour - remain intact throughout the record.

Review: Spectral musical favourites Ghost Box return with the beautiful third album by Beautify Junkyards. With special guests Paul Weller, Dorothy Moskowitz (of United States of America) and Jesse Chandler (of Pneumatic Tubes & Midlake), this is a thoroughly far-flung metal detecting foray indeed, but it's not the inclusion of the canonic names of 60s psychedelic rock that makes this one special, more than it is its bright, refined, verging on impeccable recordings; despite much guitar echo and analogue anaphora, nothing gets lost in mire, despite this being a nominal junkyard. Best of among the shiny things has to be 'Sonora', the star prize in this magpie's nest. These acid folk have well and truly done it again.
