Th1 [evnslower]
Rhubarb Orc. 19.53 Rev
Review: It's the album that redefined ambient music, not least for a generation of parasympathetic ravers. Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II marked a stylistic shift away from the first edition in the infamous ambient LP 'series', Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Volume II differed substantially; this time, there would be no 'techno' addendum to 'ambient', and all tracks thereupon would lack the usual indulgence of beats, however easy-on-the-ears these had been beforehand. Known for its many numbered tracks - which on the original edition, rather than track names, denoted references to images of natural forms, textures and geologic readymades, all bathed in orange, and from which fans had to infer the written names - this expanded edition stays faithful to this origin. Even so, it adds two unreleased D. Jamesian treats - 'th1 [evnslower]' and a reversed version of 'Rhubarb' - as well as a the previously vinyl only '#19'.

Do It To The Music (2012 club mix Remaster)
Do It To The Music (Fred Falke X Zen Freeman remix)
Review: 'Technopera' is the debut EP by Ampersounds (Fred Falke and Zen Freeman), featuring Rufus Wainwright. It's a bold claim for a debut electro-house EP to feature vocals by such a renowned artist. But Fred Falke nad Zen Freeman are no rookies either, having won the hearts of many a house and techno reveller in France, Europe and beyond since the 1990s. Ampersounds and the Wainwright collab was made manifest after an intellectual chat the trio shared over some highfalutin poetry; fittingly, Technopera has an air of intellectualism about it, with highlights like 'Solitude Of Heart' portraying a downtrodden mood blended with smart production and nods to '80s tropes.

Review: The Expanded Edition of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II is here; this is a reissue of an album that still serves as one of the ideasthetic backbones to most music fans' idea of 'ambient music' at large. A lesser-known fact is that when James recorded the record, he had concurrently undergone a period of lucid dreaming, and in this vivid lucid state, had heard many sounds akin to those heard on this record, which he had subsequently attempted to recreate. The sound of dreaming is usually an ineffable thing, but not to Aphex Twin, who had perhaps been one of the first to articulate dreams' bleary, smeary, selective and dream-distorted sonic quality. Many different interpreters have harped on this record, some hearing a 'cold islationism' in it, others a purer bliss; what is most evident is this one helped popularise ambient music in a formal, less connotative way, and continues to do so even today.

Review: Music From Memory totally recall and compile this next instalment in their popular multi-artist compilation series, Virtual Dreams. This time centring on Ambient Explorations In The House And Techno Age, Japan 1993-1999, this second edition in the series follows on from the first released in 2020, and continues to shine a light on the house and techno-adjacent music that helped redefine the definition of ambient music during the 1990s. While the first focused on Europe, we venture far further East here, primarily riffing on the many ambient flows and sequential somnaumblisms eminent from the J-shaped isle from the time, including the trans-missive floater, 'Phoenix At Desert' by Akio and the pulse-tidal electro phaseout, Web's 'The Cycle Of Seasons'.

Review: The Tumbling Psychic Joy of Now, an expansive and ritualistic collaboration between Holy Tongue and Shackleton, is set here to enjoy. Holy Tongue, a trio featuring Valentina Magaletti, Al Wootton, and Susumu Mukai, are known for their unique blend of psychedelic, high-energy, spiritual dub-dance music, previously showcased across a trilogy of acclaimed EPs and their debut album, Deliverance and Spiritual Warfare. Their electrifying live shows draw on influences from experimental dub, frenetic rhythms of bands like 23 Skidoo and ESG, and the spiritual fervor of free jazz. Their collaboration with Shackleton, a pioneering figure in electronic music, takes their sound to new heights. Shackleton, who has evolved from the early 2000s dubstep scene into one of the most innovative voices in electronic music, brings his distinct rhythmic approach and deep conceptual themes to this project. Originally intended as a remix, the project blossomed into a full-fledged collaboration after a shared festival lineup in Sweden. The album is a profound journey through psychedelic, ritualistic dub, blending the maximal and minimal, the internal and external, ecstasy and agonyia true reflection of the psychic joy of the present moment.

Review: As the title suggests, Broadcast have collected all their demo recordings made between 2000 and 2006 and compiled them onto a single 14-track record. But that's not the main piece of news: sadly, this one marks the end of releasing from the band, tying the bow on an game-changing career to say the least. Many of these tender tidbits were worked into finished productions appearing on Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon; it's an impressive flex to be able to flaunt your one-offs and pack them onto a single recorded finale. What's more, the connotations aroused by form - demos - as well as the sonic content of these gems plays nicely up to Broadcast's now well-established aesthetic, which is one for the ages, to be sure. The album also includes two songs discovered by James after bandmate Trish's passing: 'Come Back To Me' and 'Please Call To Book' which was her response to Broadcast's 2006 'Let's Write A Song' project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song.

Review: Jamie xx's long-awaited album, In Waves, marks the next chapter in the career of one of the most in-demand producers of his generation. Review: For the first time, David Sylvian's 29-track career retrospective, Everything & Nothing, comes to vinyl format. Spanning the incipience of Sylvian's craft with key cuts from his Japan and Rain Tree Crow days, through to his solo years with Virgin Records, this is a right summative beauty. We're surprised by its oversight on the part of record companies until now, with the album having initially only made it to a short CD and Minidisc run. Sylvian's sonic and lyrical Romanticism shines as brightly as ever here, with the pith at the wilful core of the record cogent in the pre-chorus line of 'The Scent Of Magnolia': "none of the history books describe what I've seen." Here we're also met with new remixes of 'Ghosts' and 'Bamboo Houses', as well as new session versions of tracks from the standout albums Secrets Of The Beehive and Dead Bees On A Cake.

'JS-07' rolls out with deep, pillow drums and well buried sub bass that slowly sweeps you up and locks you into a state of hypnosis. 'JS-07R' on the flip side is run through with slightly more warmth and light, like beams of sun piercing the surface of an ocean and catching microscopic organisms floating on the sea bed. It's a heady sound full of soul.

Review: Fred Again's new LP Ten Days is decidedly minimal in both visual and sonic feel, making for a well-put-together exercise in chic dance summeriness, one that manages to feel, paradoxically, nostalgic for the present moment. If the crux of Fred Again's appeal rests our vicarious enjoyment of his evidently voracious enjoyment of life, then this is equally as reflective in the music here, with 'Adore U' skimming through pitch-warped vocals sampled from Obongjayar's live performance dedicated to his sister and mum, as if to immortalise them in a rush of frenetics and lightness of being, and 'Ten' equally playing up the bare skeletals of snap-rims, warbly samples and ever more pitch-effecting, this time on Jozzy's vocals. Less earnest than his outing with Brian Eno, and more dedicable purely to the young adult gaieties of summer, Ten Days marks a little over a weeks' worth of fun, tinged with a tiny hint of melancholy.

Review: The production duo of Ralf Dorper and Michael Mertens make up the core of Propaganda, the longstanding EBM, industrial and all-round electronic production duo from Dusseldorf. Formed in 1982 in the associative fallout of similar musical outfits such as Die Krupps, Propaganda enjoyed a decade as purveyors of a historically important sound; as the Cold War raged, so too did the morbid promise of a pitiless musical annihilation by EBM and industrial pop, the psychopathic sonic expression of being churned up twixt the gears of a death machine which one had no part in making. But Propaganda's sound was never so hellishly 'industrial' as such, instead demonstrating a greater willingness than most to meld EBM with synth-pop, in a way that did not sound grave but graceful. In this sense, their more sensual sound is indicative of the "diffuse spectacle" of the way propaganda works in the present day, one that is not merely authoritative and prohibitive (as might be imagined in an Orwellian nightmare), but rather seductive, automatic, diffuse in the population rather than ordained by a higher conniving power. This new, notably self-titled record sounds to know this: its robotic, yet pristinely recorded vocal tones by Claudia Bruecken and Betsi Miller - its brave new pleasure-worlds of vocoded, yet luridly cyborgish vocal parts - as well as enticingly smooth and sawn-off productions throughout, would seem to relish in the suffusive propagandistic message of today. That is, we can have, and all are, part of the fun. They've not put out a new full-length record since 1991, perhaps the reemergence of Propaganda is a sign of the times.

Review: Too Dark Park, the seminal 1990 album from influential industrial pioneers Skinny Puppy, receives a well-deserved reissue celebrating 35 years of its legendary release. This record stands as one of the band's most influential works, featuring tracks like 'Tormentor' and 'Spasmolytic that have left an indelible mark on the industrial music landscape. Praised by publications like Vice and Metal Hammer, which named it one of the "10 Best Industrial Albums," Too Dark Park is a menacing and massive exploration of themes like H.P. Lovecraft-style cosmic horror, addiction, mental disarray, and the disintegration of nature. Spin aptly described it as a "return to the bloodbath," capturing the album's cataclysmic and chaotic essence. Too Dark Park showcases the band's commitment to experimentation, incorporating elements of funk alongside forceful basslines, samples, electronics, distortion, and heavy guitars. This reissue brings Skinny Puppy's groundbreaking album back to vinyl for the first time in 30 years, offering both longtime fans and new listeners a chance to experience its raw power and innovation. Too Dark Park remains a legendary album in industrial music and continues to captivate audiences with its uncompromising intensity.

Virtual Dreams II: Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age Japan 1993-1999
Review: Music From Memory share the CD edition (there's also a vinyl release) of their latest in a series of compilations, which focuses on the tide of new ambient and minimalist electronica which came about at the turn of the millennium, Virtual Dreams. Whilst the first volume focused on the techno and electronica musics emergent in Europe in 1993-99, Virtual Dreams Vol. 2 homes in on Japan during the same period, tracking the regional, geosonic differences between each global cultural centre. Tracing a fibrous thread, that began to weave itself of its own accord, out from the early 90s acid house FOMO experienced in Japan's early days, through to its restful response with the dawn of "listening techno" proffered by the likes of Sublime Records, Syzygy Records and Frogman Records, many of the tracks featured therein cull their choices from not only these leading lights but also the odd and not-so-odd rarity, helping usher in a truer representation of the era.

Review: Multi Culti presents a captivating full-length release from Peruvian artist Aristidez, cofounder of Lima's Casa Locasa and the nonprofit label Behua Icara, which supports indigenous culture. Now based in Berlin, Aristidez has been steadily building his reputation with releases on labels like Calypso, Disque-Discos, and Kebrada, as well as notable remixes for Amplio Espectro and Playground Records. His music, praised by Matias Aguayo and the late Andrew Weatherall, stands out for its deep rhythmic sensibility and subtle nods to indigenous influences, all while avoiding cliches. This album showcases Aristidez's ability to blend a wide array of electronic influences into a cohesive, hypnotic experience. Across its seven tracks, listeners are treated to a sonic journey that spans breakbeat-driven 90s rave, 80s proto-trance, cult dub, and downtempo grooves. Tracks like 'Gastonia Dub' and 'Make Flutes With My Bones' reveal a mastery of rhythm and atmosphere, creating an immersive, kaleidoscopic soundscape that is both danceable and introspective. This collection is a testament to Aristidez's skill in crafting timeless electronic music that resonates with both the dancefloor and the discerning listener.

Music For Bus Stations

Review: Rod Modell's Music For Bus Stations, released by Silentes in Italy, is a masterful exploration of ambient and dub techno that immerses listeners in a transcendent soundscape. Known for his Detroit roots and innovative use of old-school recording techniques like tape loops and echo devices, Modell crafts a sonic experience that seamlessly integrates with modern architecture. The album serves as a generative backdrop, enhancing the atmosphere of bus stations with its ethereal and progressive sounds. Designed to complement rather than clash with architectural elements, the composition creates a constantly evolving, organic sound tapestry. By utilising polyrhythmic elements and shifting sonic phenomena, Modell's work induces a state of calm and reflection. Inspired by avant-garde bus station designs, such as those by Domitianus Arquitectura and Bluck & Morgen, Music For Bus Stations transforms everyday spaces into immersive sound environments. The result is a living, unpredictable auditory experience that elevates the mundane to the sublime, perfectly capturing the essence of ambient exploration. Act fast if you want a copy, Rod Modell fans are die-hards!

Review: Markus Guentner returns to his longstanding label, A Strangely Isolated Place, following the triptych of Theia, Empire, and Extropy, presenting eight inspiring collaborations on Kontrapunkt. The longstanding cinematic ambient artist adds to a string of collaborative records with a high-octane octet of dialogic fragments, all of which err towards ethereal. Karen Vogt, Arovane, Hollie Kenniff and Abul Mogard all star on the record, suggesting neoclassical music shouldn't be kept so anaclitically divided between artists; that the form of remixing and featuring should be borrowed from pop and dance music. Best among this supreme stock of sound-vapour has to be the naturalistic ablations heard on 'Ancestral Images' or the august drumrolls and big hits of 'Utopian Fragments'.

Review: Science, Art And Ritual chronicles the musical journey of Kingsuk Biswas, known as Bedouin Ascent. Growing up in Harrow during the 70s and 80s, Biswas was influenced by David Rodigan's dub shows and the post-punk experimentation of the era. His eclectic tastes spanned punk, free jazz, noise, and Indian Classical music, which he fused with his ever expanding record collection. By 1987, his music prefigured what would become techno and gave rise to this album which was released in 1994 by Rising High Records. Science, Art And Ritual now celebrates its 30th anniversary with a deluxe 3LP reissue featuring restored tracks and some bonus new material.

Review: The late SOPHIE Xeon shaped modern pop and experimental music with her Grammy-nominated 'Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' and 'PRODUCT' series in the mid-to-late 2010s, working alongside A.G. Cook and PC Music to create some of the most futuristic and bubbly music. Xeon produced for Vince Staples, Madonna and Charli XCX before her sudden passing in January 2021, she is known for her unique, textural production style that has even been featured in McDonald's adverts (of all places). Her first posthumous project has been lovingly brought to fruition by her family estate run by her brother, handpicking songs he says she would've wanted to be released that were nearly finished. The first track 'Reason Why', featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, has long been a fan favourite since live performances and leaked demos hit SoundCloud over four years ago. It's a spacious and squeaky clean dance track, one of many examples SOPHIE produced, showcasing what pop's future could look like.

What Else?
This Is What I See
Bluer Than Ever
Review: Dan Andrei is arguably one of the finest selectors of this generation and a master minimal producer who makes electronic music of the highest order. His latest outing sees him inaugurating his own brand-new label alongside Claudiu Stefan. Rainbow Hill is a platform for their more personal ideas and starts with four more of Andrei's brilliantly deft yet dramatic tracks. 'Numan's Touch' kicks off with rolling drums and bass and a fine eco-system of cosmic pads, twinkling keys and fizzing synths that are theatrical and involving. 'What Else?' then gets darker and more intense with heady loops and wispy pads, and again the ante is upped and the darkness pervades once more on the tense and taught dub-tech roller 'This Is What I See'. Last of all, 'Bluer Than Ever' floats above the floor with airy pads and radiant chords. A perfect 5am vibe.

Review: Rod Modell's latest album Music For Bus Stations is dedicated to the many bus junctions and interchanges of the world, pairing deftly digital ambiences with themes of ekstasis and waiting. The Detroit-born artist scours the full breadth and depth of his sound here, with its many sheer fuzzes and tasty melodies providing ample ,de-coustic contrast to the impersonal but oddly calming modernist architecture styles that constitute the many central European bus station designs that Modell has visited on his travels.

Review: Music For Bus Stations by Rod Modell draws an explicit parallel between the act of vesseled, bodily transportation and psychogenic listening, implicitly arguing that both are forms of affirming the importance of elsewhere. Realising that making one's own noise is sometimes an unnecessary reaction, his liner notes read: "There is no reason for resistance. Let's be silent. The noise around us is quite good." Waiting and deep listening thus become central themes of this LP, inspired by the modernist designs of bus stations dotting the many outer metropolitan areas of such staple European cities as Pzorzheim, Rio Maior and Hamburg. With its shifting statics and coarse electric ambiences providing equal parts tension and release, Modell emphasises attention paid, not reflexive avoidance of or reaction to, the transient environment one finds oneself in.

This album is a solo piano rendition of the seminal Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence soundtrack and has never been available outside Japan until now. Review: Among the figureheads of French disco, Bernard Fevre, better known as Black Devil, probably had the shortest-lived career, but was among the brightest minds of them all. Although his first album Disco Club, released in 1978, went unnoticed at first, it has since become a must-have, a collector's item which has led a lot of listeners to further investigate his extensive work. Fevre experimented with such a wide gamut of styles that it has been hard not to lose track; though perhaps one such aide l'equilibre is this newest compilation/lookback record, Space Oddities 1976-1985. Spanning a huge swathe of Fevre's records, some more touted and others more waylaid, this compilation can only begin to help us firmly grasp the cosmic breadth of the artist's work, some of which is indubitably club-bound, some of which is comparatively cinematic and scenic. Here's hoping Giordano Bruno was wrong about the open universe - Fevre's explorations are so expansive that they verge on boundlessness.

Review: Jenova 7's Lost Sci-Fi Movie Themes is an excellent blend of trip hop nostalgia and futuristic soundscapes. Across 16 tracks, he takes listeners on a journey through time and space, evoking the essence of '90s trip hop while exploring uncharted sonic territories. Standout tracks like 'The Future 1995,' 'My Zero G Love,' and 'Downtown Lost In The City Of Lizards' show Jenova 7's creativity of genre-blending and atmospheric storytelling. Jenova 7's ability to fuse moody, jazz-inflected samples with grooves that draw the listener in makes this album a cinematic journey through sound. Lost Sci-Fi Movie Themes is a unique album for fans of trip hop in particular and those simply looking for a transformative musical experience.

Review: Dark Entries is back with Back Up Dos: Mexican Tecno Pop 1982-1989, which is a much-warranted follow-up to 2021's Back Up. This compilation features ten tracks of synth-pop and New Beat with seven previously unreleased on wax. It highlights the evolution of Mexico's DIY music scene as it moves from post-punk and new wave to aggressive EBM and cyberpunk. Reflecting the political turbulence of the era which was marked by rising drug cartels and conservative shifts, these tracks showcase how bands used home recording and drew inspiration from the Human League and Wax Trax Records while also including pop anthems by Casino Shanghai and Los Agentes Secretos, alongside rarities from Ford Proco and Maria Bonita.

Review: Hana Rani presents Nostalgia, a live album recorded at Witold Lutoslawski's Concert Studio at the Polish Radio in Warsaw, captured in breath-held detail, shortly after the release of her third solo album Ghosts. An homage to the Polish radio station, Rani describes the nine-piece record as a response to her visitation in 2018, just before the release of her debut record Esja. Soon establishing a recording studio in the proximate municipality of Mokotow, Rani channelled Polish Radio's historic broadcast energies into a locus of inspiration; Nostalgia builds on this in concert, in turn responding to a set of personal video recordings and photographs taken on a quiet, snowy day in the building. Weaving tinkling, clastic acoustic and electric piano around intervalent drones, and backed up by a string ensemble, Rani sound-paints a unique picture of Polish radiophonic history through a personal lens.

His 1994 ambient masterpiece, Atmospherics, has been newly remastered and paired with a fresh track-by-track reinterpretation by bvdub, a friend and collaborator, for this new reissue. A lot has changed in terms of music and technology (and much more, to be honest) since the original version was made and these new versions were crafted by the timeless musicianship and textural richness still shine through. Amongst those who know, Atmospherics achieved cult status during the rise of ambient music and was created using only a keyboard, sequencer, 12-bit sampler, drum machine, and bass guitar. It was all crafted in real time with no edits and bvdub's tasteful reinterpretations honour the original while exploring new dimensions with a melancholic touch.

The Age Of Consent (40th Anniversary Edition)
Cat: LMS 1725203. Rel: 18 Oct 24
Review: Synthpop trio Bronski Beat's 1984 debut The Age of Consent is a rarity in musical history; it both defined a generation and challenged the status quo. 40 years later and The Age Of Consent remains as prescient and vital as ever as it did on its original release; transgressive, defiant, queer, and laden with hooks. To celebrate its anniversary, London Records revisit the album across a series of formats, uncovering sonic archival gems, new mixes and more. This new edition technically contains two LPs: The Age Of Consent and Hundreds & Thousands, with five bonus tracks for each, plus remixes from Absolute., Planningtorock, The Knocks, Dave Aude, Tall Paul, and Superchumbo. Also coming with a detailed insert doubling up as a timeline by project consultant Barnaby Ashton-Bullock, this is the definitive retrospective product for anyone looking to complete their Bronski Beat collection (as best they can, anyway, for the love'll probably never end...).

Review: Forty years since their inception and almost two decades since their last release, art-synth auteurs Propaganda return with a self-titled album that marks a significant chapter in alternative music history. Crafted entirely in their native Dusseldorf by the principal songwriting duo Ralf Dorper and Michael Mertens, this album embodies the depth and drama of their early work while exploring fresh sounds and reflecting personal and societal changes. Featuring guest appearances from Hauschka and Thunder Bae, Propaganda is sleek, sensual, and cerebral. Tracks like 'They Call Me Nocebo' and 'Purveyor Of Pleasure' showcase their sonic evolution with infectious synth drums and expressive vocals. The album retains their subversive lyrical lineage, addressing themes of sex, sin, and loneliness with seasoned self-reflection. Highlights include the operatic 'Vicious Circle,' the ecological 'Tipping Point,' and the poignant 'Distant.' The album concludes with 'Wenn Ich Mir Was Wuenschen Duerfte,' a haunting rendition featuring Hauschka's prepared piano. Propaganda's third album, released on Bureau B, is an important part to their enduring influence and a must-listen from start to finish.

Review: UK artist David Duncan recorded only one EP as Ability II and it recently got reissued and soon snapped up. Now, much to the delight of fans of the man behind the classic tune 'Pressure Dub' he is back. This album features an exclusive collection of tunes he made back in his heyday in the 90s, none of which were related at the time, and none of which you will have ever heard before anywhere. They feature his signature sound designs across seven cuts that sound as futuristic now as they ever could as they combine jacked-up house, techno and tech into scintillating and dub-weighted sounds for the club.

Nati Infiniti

Review: Italian musician, producer, composer, and instrument builder Alessandro Cortini unveils his latest release, NATI INFINITI, via Mute. Following up on 2021's Scuro Chiaro, NATI INFINITI is a forty-minute piece split into five movements, based on an immersive audio installation that Cortini originally created for the Sonar Lisboa festival in 2022, where it was presented across four floors of the Museu de Lisboa's Moagem. Marked by intense bouts of airy, tubular ambiences; and yet more sawwing tones counterposed with stark, angelic highs, giving rise to intensely beautiful arp sequenes, Cortini's latest is a real distillation of the sublime.

Music For Bus Stations: MF
Cat: SME 2477MF.
Review: Rod Modell's Music For Bus Stations is, as it says on the tin, a "generative sonic backdrop for bus stations". We hope that that includes Milton Keynes Interchange, or else us Brits will have no music to help us through the bleakness next time we're headed up North! Building on a 25-ish-year-long career's worth of similar stuff, the Detroit sound-e-scape artist serves up a profound, yet measured set of pieces here, all of which are untitled, and each of which deliver slightly different takes on a fibre-optic, refractive sound, echoing something between Global Communication, Arpanet and Celer in combining implied themes of travel and telecoms.

Review: Newly, radically reimagined remixes created from John Lennon's classic song, Mind Games. These nine Meditation Mixes craft their own space while maintaining firm and authentic roots in John Lennon's original recording. Each have been radically altered, slowed down and extended, ranging from five to ten to over 33 minutes, allowing the soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing deep listening experience. Four tracks are presented as binaural versions which each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Named 'Mind', 'Space', 'Spirit' and 'Love', these exploit the response of the ear to left and right frequencies, which constructively combine to produce a new frequency, which in turn, as they say, activates beneficial brain patterns. Produced by Sean Lennon, these contemporary Lennon versions aim to positively impact the contemporary anxiety-racked listener, whose appetite for deep listening has only understandably increased in recent years.

Don't Be Scared
Review: Ever reticent contemporary ambient techno artist Nthng shares 'Two People', their latest EP to hit the shelves. Building on their always wordless sound - one native to a certain "mysterious" corner of the techno world, one that implies that words are insufficient in capturing both breadth and depth of sound - 'Two People' is a minimally stirring EP, one that relies on the bare associations of just two visual indicators of theme: snow, unity. Imprinted on the planar white surface shown on the front cover is a lowercase trace of the title track, which, in sound, hears a vocal recollective of a baby's gurgle, and a lonesome pad lilt that only ever so much as teases a movement, ghosted by the absence of (and so haunted by the promise of) a beat. When beats do interpellate the scape, they do with the textural quality of stalactites, breaking and dropping to the floor in step on both 'Echo Trak' and 'In Statik'. Nthng's filtrated percussion and long-release tails serve to dust the surface snow off many ambered, glaciered memories, preserved in the unspelunked caves of an antarctic psyche. Closer 'Don't Be Scared' plods forth, steppers style, with the stridency of an epiphanic polar walkabout, its swells contrasting to the many radiophonic FX peppering the mix: they give the sense of the odd "do you read me?", grounding the far-yonder miracle pads in telecommunicated reassurances from the outpost.

Review: Forty years on from their inception - and almost two decades since their last release - art-synth auteurs Propaganda return with a brand new chapter in their enthralling story. This self-titled set from principal songwriting partnership Ralf Dorper and Michael Mertens embodies the depth and drama of their early work, while exploring fresh sounds and styles, and reflecting the personal and societal changes since their last outing. Conceived and crafted entirely in their native Dusseldorf, a deliberate decision to help them stay true to themselves, and featuring guest appearances from the acclaimed Hauschka and ascendant Thunder Bae, Propaganda is Propaganda at their most essential. Packed to the brim with melancholic future pop and mutedly EBM-influenced, yet no less clean industrial tones, this album deals shrewdly and carefully in and with themes of lust, passion, toxicity and future fantasy.

Oral (Olof Dreijer remix)
Review: Bjork and Rosalia team up for the limited marble vinyl edition 12" double-sider, 'Oral', now coming packed with a stunning remix by Olof Dreijer from The Knife. The record is described by its releasers OLI as not just a single release but a "call to arms", with 100% of the profits being funnelled directly to AEGIS, the Icelandic charity dedicated to eradicating intensive fish farming in the country. 'Oral' itself is now a staple of the latest incarnation of Bjork's ever-mutant career, consummating her and Rosalia's recent rapport; a sabre-wielding, purblind aesthetic - befitting also of another of Bjork's collaborative contemporaries, Arca - fits seamlessly with the elegiac reggaeton of the song. Dreijer's remix is rabid and wonky by comparison, its draggy, morphemic rhythms belying Bjork and Rosalia's equally wetted vocals, producing a wacky litany of faunal electronics and whizzing FX.

Song For Amy (reprise)
Review: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis created a moving soundtrack for the biopic Back to Black which explores the late great jazz singer Amy Winehouse's rise and enduring impact. Their evocative composition blends melancholic strings with ambient soundscapes to reflect Winehouse's turbulent journey and profound artistry. The duo's music enhances the film's emotional depth as it captures the rawness of Winehouse's struggles and the brilliance of her musical legacy. Through haunting melodies and soulful arrangements, Cave and Ellis pay a poignant tribute to Winehouse and perfectly complement the film's narrative.

Review: The limited edition blue vinyl edition of Propaganda's self-titled record, and their first in 30 or so years. Formed by Ralf Dorper, former synthesist with electro-punks Die Krupps, and Andreas Thein, Propaganda enjoyed a string of delicious mid-to-late 80s hits before unfortunately dropping off the map in order to escape an unlucky string of allegedly questionable recording contracts. Now back at the forefront three decades on, there's an uncanny sense of no time having passed at all despite it; though their sound is modernised here to the point of a pristine clarity, the pair's ever-present preferred themes - techno-lust and futurological fervour - remain intact throughout the record.

Review: Spectral musical favourites Ghost Box return with the beautiful third album by Beautify Junkyards. Extending the idea that junkyards aren't already beautiful in their own scrappy sort of way, Nova is an exquisite selection of junk-larked tropicalia "finds", visually (album-cover-ally) building on the news cut-up assemblages of Dada and committing them to the beatific atmospheric siblings that are trip hop, psychedelia and what we'd trepidatiously deign to call cosmic lounge. With special guests Paul Weller, Dorothy Moskowitz (of United States of America) and Jesse Chandler (of Pneumatic Tubes & Midlake), this is a thoroughly far-flung metal detecting foray indeed, but it's not the inclusion of the canonic names of 60s psychedelic rock that makes this one special, more than it is its bright, refined, verging on impeccable recordings; despite much guitar echo and analogue anaphora, nothing gets lost in mire, despite this being a nominal junkyard. Best of among the shiny things has to be 'Sonora', the star prize in this magpie's nest. These acid folk have well and truly done it again.
