Whalesong (repress)
Whalesong (repress) (140 gram green vinyl 12")
Cat: TR 021G.
  1. Whalesong
  2. Blind Is The Wind
  3. Last Chance Saloon
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Trelik reach into their recent archives with a much needed repress of Whalesong, the label's 2011 debut from UK producer OCH. With a compulsive passion for the dying art of crate-digging combined with a love for modern synthesis techniques the now Sweden based OCH manages to put together a 12" that could easily be described as psychedelic Chicago. "Whalesong" is a pulsating floor work-out which references the US greats whilst building an emotive sub-aqua soundscape. "Blind is The Wind" follows with a sneaky chord driven spoken interlude which creates an air of tension before climaxing into "Last Chance Saloon".

Review: Back once again we have the long anticipated 2nd release from Hearlucinate . Based around a party in London where each guest DJ is asked to collaborate on an EP with the Hearlucinogenic host and resident Tristan da Cunha . This time round we have the uber talented Ron Obvious laying down two killer cuts aimed straight at the dance floor . UK attitude mixes with New Jersey style organs , breaks , bass and a bad ass beats... Giving us two tracks that have an old school flavour but super fresh with a modern aesthetic. Once again showcasing his ability to produce timeless , tasteful grooves that make you move . Next up is TdC with his bass driven hypnotic hybrid sound . Picking up where from the last ep with heavy bottom end , driving beats , a spooky groove , all topped off with a dash of sleaze. To Finish the EP we welcome back Freakenstein with his electro funk monster taking no booty prisoner. Dance floor dynamite as always from this exciting new artist . As always it comes dressed to impress with heavy weight 180g vinyl and artwork from the workshop of Atelier Superplus.

Spaceship For Sale EP

  4. 69 Party Boys (Fabe's 68 remix)
Review: In The Groove Records regulars Oden & Fatzo have a "Spaceship For Sale", so they've offered up this musical advertisement to tempt us into a purchase. Despite the promise of intergalactic travel, the asking price is surprisingly reasonable. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the melodious, far-sighted sci-fi bounce of classic tech-house opener "Spaceship For Sale", to the rushing, acid-flecked bubbliness of "69 Party Boys", whose electric piano-laden breakdown is simply stunning. Elsewhere, Fabe's "68 Remix" of that track gives it a delicious, UK garage-influenced swing, while "Casinomania" strikes a near perfect balance between chunky, low-end, bass-heavy bounce and picturesque, melodic bliss.

  3. Metro - "Here For The Love" (Metropolitan Acid mix) (8:19)
  4. Vitess - "133cc" (6:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The third trip out on Nuances De Nuit brings together another killer selection of ear-snagging club cuts that appeal to the deep-digging community. Kolter's "Don't Kill My Groove" has already been drawing plenty of favourable attention from the likes of Moxie with its deft breaks and electro-funk stylings. T. Jacques' "Control" is a peppy tech house jam with a sleek garage bump that should go down a treat with serious heads and passing trade alike. The real treat here though is Metro's "Here For The Love", a seriously in-demand jam from 1994 finally getting the repress treatment to take it out of the hands of the sharks. Vitess completes the package with "133cc", a dynamic wiggler with enough tripped out elements to take out a tank.

The EP is a musical delight formed by three club ready deep house cuts that Ron hs on lockdown. The title track "Builded Mind" has his signature rolling basslines, etheral vocals and lush pads that we've come to love in his music. "Nearly Forever" is a faster bumpy and swingin' number while "Foreground" closes the EP on a light and dreamy note. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. 4. Out With The In
Review: Nothing But Nice co-founder James Andrew (AKA rising star James Eggington) impressed us greatly with his debut EP, "Thinking Backwards", so hopes are high for this prompt follow-up. Happily, we can confirm that it's another excellent collection of cuts, with Eggington jogging between breakbeat-driven, bleep-laden deep tech-house (bustling and ear-catching opener "New Synth, Who Dis?"), bass-heavy, acid-flecked, intergalactic rollers (the surging, funk-fuelled brilliance of "Igor Hits The D Floor"), sub-bass powered, wide-eyed deep house bliss ("Mission of Vision") and sparkling, outer-space broken beat/sci-fi techno fusion (undoubted EP highlight "Out With The In"). Eggington is clearly in fine form right now and will be a producer to watch in the months and years ahead.

Review: There's never a dull moment with the Albion posse, who continue to search far and wide to present consistently innovative twists on the house music template. This time around they've invited Italian producer Adriano Sorrentino from the DEMUT camp to drop some sparkling jackers with an old-skool palette but a forward-thinking spirit. "Inner Movement" is a sweet slice of melancholic techno rich in the synth department. "Dizzy Freq" is arguably the prize here though - a rough-hewn jacker with heavy sub bass and plenty of freaky analogue delights wobbling around on top. On the flip, Domenico Rosa delivers a funky, equally ghoulish version of "Dizzy Freq" and then the legendary Titonton Duvante lays down a sumptuous deep house take on "Inner Movement".

Review: If you're going to launch a new label, it's always wise to make your debut release a bit of a belter. This first missive from YA.R Records, a multi-artist extravaganza featuring tracks from a mixture of new-ish names and established producers, certainly ticks that box. Sweely provides a strong start via the bounding but funky beats, jaunty bass and boogie-style synth sounds of "It's Time To Play", before Aladdin opts for crunchier tech-house beats, bolder synth-bass and hazy female vocal samples on "Tonight". Elsewhere on the EP, Funktroid cannily combines the sparse melodies and deep bass of Bleep with the sci-fi futurism of Detroit techno and the off-kilter swing of 21st century tech-house ("Drunktroid"), while Garouda takes a trip into chunky, funk-fuelled tech-house/dub-house fusion ("Who Are You").

You'll find more of the same on this fine debut EP by new signing Soul of Void. A-side "Viha" sets the tone, with hazy male vocals, exotic south eastern European instrumentation and stirring stings rising above a tactile tech-house groove. Title track "Samsara" explores similar sonic territory, albeit with chunkier grooves and more twinkling piano motifs, while "Ederlezei" is the kind of bright, breezy and sun-kissed concoction that would sound great blasting from speakers at a humid afternoon dance.

Review: Burnski and Michael James ignited their Relic collaboration last year with a classy drop on oge, and they're back again on Constant Black with some devastatingly bumping minimal tech house. There's a hi-tech finish to this whole EP, from the moody lead cut "D" to the slippery, funkified "E". The mix is clean as a whistle and maximized for every little production wriggle and shapely bassline to cut through on any system, even in the hazier clouds of pad hovering over "F". Don't skip over the B2 though - as with all the best EPs there's gold to be savoured in the crafty machine shuffle and rubbery b-line of "G".

He's at it again here on a pleasingly uncomplicated and on-point three-tracker for Rawax. A-side "Off Message" sets the tone, with O'Sullivan layering deep space chords and gentle intergalactic melodies atop a tough-but-rubbery beat. "Don't Know" is a dark and heavy affair with some tightly wound RnB vocal licks and a mean tempered bass swell. His illustrious track record in UK house and techno has touched on all kinds of ventures since the DIY days, and now he's presenting something very special indeed for Ornate. The vibe on these tracks is more taut and techy, with "313151" opening proceedings on a bubbling bed of acid before the rubbery monosynth jack of "44151" on the B side. This is the first of them and, in typically matter-or-fact fashion, features three more undulating, funk-fuelled tech-house jams named after letters of the alphabet. Lee Renacre has been delivering distinctive club tracks with an ear-snagging kink since the early '90s, and he's sounding as inspired as ever on this new release. "Ochos" is a dreamier cut that places the emphasis on melody and atmospherics rather than straight up beats, creating a beautiful slice of machine soul in the process.

Review: Kepler has already been on a barnstorming run over the past 12 months with key drops on Pleasure Zone, Hoarder and Discotech amongst many others, not to mention his killer garage excursions as 0113. Now he shores up on Constant Sound with some fizzing, energetically charged techno that packs a punch and dazzles on top thanks to an acute sense of melody. DX7 organ basslines collide with cosmic arps and a thumping rhythm section on "Contact", while "Afterglow" takes things a little deeper without dropping the tempo. "Movement" revels in a cascade of interwoven synth lines, while "Pulse" takes a leaner, clubbier route without losing that up-for-it rush around the upper 120 BPM range.

Review: Since launching their offshoot label in 2018, Ibiza Record store More Than Music (MTM) has offered up a string of rock-solid singles from the likes of Triptil, Mihai Pol and Arapu. The White Isle-based imprint's latest recruit is sometime Eastenderz and Infuse artist Lorenzo Chiabotti. He sets his stall out via bold and ear-pleasing title track "Albatross", where a variety of sparkling, sun-kissed synthesizer riffs and funk-fuelled TB-303 acid lines buzz around a bouncy, bass-heavy tech-house groove. Over on side B it's all about "Attabeat", a smooth and spacey slab of tech-house warmth that Topper subsequently turns into a two-step-influenced dance through low-slung grooves and drowsy, deep space pads.

Review: Malaga's Cuartero is next up on Constant Black, bringing a finely honed minimal house sound that fits into the label's shadowy club aesthetic perfectly. "Rame" is a driving, insistent slice of stripped down house with plenty of subtle wriggles and textures gurgling away under the surface. "Melkor" has some tougher drums, not least around the low end, but the same economy of sonics is applied here where the beat takes the lead and the FX skirt and skitter around the beat. "Caterpillar" has a tougher, less swung accent to its beats, but the chunky drum machine patterns are still executed with that stern focus that makes a minimal track pop off in the mix.

Review: Henry Hyde is back on his usual stomping ground of NorthSouth with some peppy club workouts to get wiggy to. "Locked Out" has plenty of tripped out tones bubbling around the sturdy, Lately bass-fed groove, while "The Red Face Roller" gets more playful with the synth lines without losing the steady, sleek rhythm section. "Start Again" switches the mood but retains the palette, making great use of a grinding bass note to anchor the sprightly blips and dubby bleeps up top. "Leg Le Friend" goes further into the influence of early UK techno with its ethereal pads and intricate melodic elements, capturing the kind of vibe you might have heard on Likemind with a cheeky modern twist.

For trainspotters already familiar with their revered back catalogs, this outing is sure to offer some unexpected twists. The record is a grainy, caustic blend of atmospheric intensity, rhythmic dexterity, and occasional moments of sublime grace. Completely fresh, outsider sounds made with a beginner's mind and unbridled enthusiasm for sonic exploration.

Functional Combinations & Collaborations Vol 1
Cat: NSR 022. Rel: 17 Aug 20
  1. Scam Pan (feat Giom) (6:26)
  2. Murmurs (feat Alleged Witches) (6:10)
Review: Yila, an ex-Londoner based in Ljubljana collaborated with two Dj's: French London based Giom and Slovenian Alleged Witches.

The combinations were the focus; each person bringing their unique style, this natural melding deciding the genre without confines, guided by the Dj's understanding of what works in the club.

Sprinklings of nostalgia meet a future thinking fusion of dance music with a focus on slick production. There is a subject matter; not expressed through the contrived mind but through a subconscious sonic delivery, allowing the political nature of the music speak for itself.

  3. Are You Ready (Jonno & Tommo remix)
  4. Are You Ready (Tommy Largo remix)
Review: Here we have another Tech-House/Techno EP from Zooted and Booted Records... "Are You Ready"! The original mix by Dylan Debut and David Coker is a four to the floor bassline smasher that just keeps building and building until its deep analogue twisted cords send you in to a trance with solid 909 hats that sizzle all the way through. There's also the solid jacking house mix on the EP by none other than Mr deepjacking, Tommy Largo, that will shuffle its way through any bumping party, keeping it dirty and deep until the a.m. There's no stopping this EP as next on the list is an ultra-sweet deep and chunky mix by those classic Ornate boys Jonno & Tommo. This mix is hot and late night too but with some twisted extra layer and bumps that will send any man or woman crazy!!! Last but not least is the upfront dance hall thumper by none other than Eddie Leader, the bad man behind Hudd Trax. This mix has lush added extra keys and a solid old school analogue feel with some dirty little rave action running through it, but still keeping it in tune with today sounds and production. This mix would sit seriously well with the sun coming up at 5 am dancing on a beach surrounded by palm trees and thousands of party people! Play loud!

Review: Half Baked are back with a new record from Pressure Traxx main man Arno. On this particular record the minimal tastemaker is indulging his love of hip hop and rave culture, artfully distilling rowdy elements into a funky twist on the micro house aesthetic. It's a potent blend that reaches from the scatty delights of "Why Does The Lion Get Lost In The Jungle?" to the chirpy organ-led "No Car; Big Garage". On the flip, there's a more distinctly house slant to "He Displays Nothing But", with the same playful demeanour powering the grooves albeit in a more stripped back way.

  1. Opticamente Avanzando

  3. Planos De Ausencia (Casualidad mix)
Review: "Secretsundaze continue their quest to uncover amazing new music with the signing of exciting young Dominican artist Boundary. At just 19 years old Boundary aka Josue Suero makes music that is brimming full of ideas and influences that belie his young age. The 'Interlazados' EP is his debut release for a UK label.

Taking cues from his fascination with video game music, his first real gateway to electronic music, the four track EP showcases Boundary's melodic sensibilities and ear for a killer rhythm.ALead track 'Opticamente Avanzando' unwinds over 12 minutes of deep, mesmeric melodic, contemplative electronica with hints of 90's UK rave influences.ACheck the grins when the killer bassline drops half way through!A

The glossy melodies, jazzy motifs and hip-tugging bass of 'OP.AV' and the breakbeat house of 'Interlazados' channel more lo-fi, ambient house influences but all sent through that unique Boundary filter. Finally, the brain-warming, hypnagogic, tempo-changing rhythms of 'Planos de Ausencia Casualidad' could be the EP highlight and recalls the work of Lone and Actress.

You could listen to these tracks and be mistaken for thinking this is an artist who has maybe been lost in the throws of extended Villalobos DJ set or the deep pads of old Sun Electric records, but as an artist who is an outsider to the European dance scene, his inspiration comes from closer to home, as Boundary explains:

"For this EP I was interested to see if i could hit close to the feelings i have when I listen to certain video game music, how I could convey the amazing and deep storytelling in these songs. I really wanted them to feel like a ride/adventure. 'Opticamente Avanzando' ('Optically Advancing' in English) for me is like a venture into a machine that analyses a bunch of electronic music genres and it outputs as many different variations of these genres it can, each with their own little quirk/details, creating something unique in the process."

With previous releases on LA based label, Point Records, and Paris' Third Try label (Axel Boman, SFV Acid) Boundary's emergence represents a promising prospect for the electronic music world and 'Interlazados' another essential release on Secretsundaze."

Review: Following on from a sell-out first release, Serenity Records returns with a four track double-header from Thoma Bulwer & Anna Wall. In alignment with the label's policy of allowing the artists commissioned to choose a mental-health charity of their choice, 002 dedicates all its proceeds to Centrepoint - an organisation which seeks to combat the ever-growing problem of homelessness. The EP spans across the full spectrum of Techno, with the cuts varying from soft melodic textures, floaty synth work and a B1 that wouldn't stand at all out of place in a peak-time club setting - a nice surprise from this exciting new not-for-profit label...
