Review: Enveloping us in the very constant mysterious and magnetic sound universe that Alci previously has built in his past releases, the new EP "HIRAGANA" reports on the multitude of experiences he has had lately and his subsequent undertaken creative evolution. This organic enrichment, which is an addition or better said, an enhancement in Alci's soundscape, result from the various inspirations Alci underwent during his travels and time spent surrounded by nature as well as urban nightlife.
Review: Newcastle via London label Jaunt Records revisits its 10 year anniversary EP from 2017 with a series of great remixes by Inland, Jonas Kopp, Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff and Gian. This is the first of two EPs planned, and it offers up a timeless mix of heady techno and slick electro.
Berlin based Brit Inland tackles Jaunt resident Blackhall & Bookless's 'Spirit' and serves up a heavyweight wedge of warehouse techno. On the same side, Jonas Kopp flips 'Itria' into a sci-fi tinged bit of dub techno and long time studio partners Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff from Indigo Aera offer widescreen synth work and blissed out pads all tethered to rolling and rubbery drums. Gian's take on Stojche's track is a fantastically crisp and futurist piece of electro that will get anyone on their toes. This is a classy EP that showcases the sort of sounds you will hear on any Jaunt dance floor.
Review: The fifth Future Primitive release, Babylon Paralysis, sees the label work with an all-time favourite UK techno artist Steve O'Sullivan. We are super happy to be reissuing a classic slab of late '90s Bluetrain material from Steve in the shape of "Congo Shuffle", which originally surfaced as an untitled B1 on the timeless Echo Freaks 12". Newly extended and edited by O'Sullivan, "Congo Shuffle" has been lavishly cut at the Exchange giving new life to this bottom feeding monster.
On the flip, Steve blesses us with two brand new productions continuing the sub-heavy theme of the A side. Invisible Guest steps away from the straight up 4/4 productions he's nailed in recent years in favour of a stealthy broken dub approach that wouldn't be out of place on go-to Bristol label Idle Hands.
"Paralyzed Dub" is both the inspiration for the release title and another classic demonstration of Steve's ability to stun listeners with very few elements. Play loud and keep away from laptop speakers.
Review: Mulen's latest must-check release is a collaborative affair from experienced producer Alexis Cabrera (Raummusik, Salty Nuts, Yaji) and Jorge Saveretti (Esperanza, Visionquest, Cadenza). Given their collective history, you'll be unsurprised to learn that the "Some EP" is really rather good. They set their stall out via an impressive title track that wraps spacey but funky riffs, deep space pads and undulating acid lines around a memorable bassline and typically swinging tech-house beats). "KInda" tips a wink to the glitchy, bass-heavy sound of Romanian minimal techno and the swinging intergalactic tech-house funk of Paris's YYY label, while "Science" is a deep, woozy and wonky affair full of minor key bleeps, jazzy motifs and locked-in beats.
Review: Default Records has returned with its second release after compiling a roster of artists who are committed to establishing presence in the scene by pushing boundaries and pursuing excellence. Camelia starts us off on the A side with *Transferring*, which presents itself in a light and airy atmosphere. Its playful percussive notes are juxtaposed against its hypnotic groove making for a warm and easy listen. Macarie follows with *Flu*, a vibrant and dance-inducing sludge of gritty, piercing elements that seamlessly blooms into an emotional melody that is driven by its tantalizing rhythm. Label boss Exander shows the heavier side of his creative spectrum on the B side with *Odyssey*. The fullness of this cut accompanied by its intriguing and directive vocal is only enhanced by its delicate features and attention to detail. Closing out the compilation is Lulla's *Distort Time* which reveals all its insides with a symphony of glitchy bleeps and blops all reinforced by a cadence of drums and groove that stirs it into an electric soup.
Review: Mike 'Agent X' Clark is a true hero of the Detroit scene, but he rarely gets the props he deserves, making any outing of his a cause for celebration. El Prevost's No Speakers label knows what's up, and they've drafted in Clark for his killer jam "The Heat." The name is no foil, this track will set any party ablaze with its distinctive speech sample and saucy rhythm section. Alongside the original, there is a strong cast of remixers on hand to serve up deadly variations, from the label boss' skipping, psyched-out groover to Ben Sims' appropriately thumping techno workout. Peter Rocket especially impresses with a crafty breaks version that should slot in nicely with the resurgent electro scene.
Review: Here we have another Tech-House/Techno EP from Zooted and Booted Records... "Are You Ready"! The original mix by Dylan Debut and David Coker is a four to the floor bassline smasher that just keeps building and building until its deep analogue twisted cords send you in to a trance with solid 909 hats that sizzle all the way through. There's also the solid jacking house mix on the EP by none other than Mr deepjacking, Tommy Largo, that will shuffle its way through any bumping party, keeping it dirty and deep until the a.m. There's no stopping this EP as next on the list is an ultra-sweet deep and chunky mix by those classic Ornate boys Jonno & Tommo. This mix is hot and late night too but with some twisted extra layer and bumps that will send any man or woman crazy!!! Last but not least is the upfront dance hall thumper by none other than Eddie Leader, the bad man behind Hudd Trax. This mix has lush added extra keys and a solid old school analogue feel with some dirty little rave action running through it, but still keeping it in tune with today sounds and production. This mix would sit seriously well with the sun coming up at 5 am dancing on a beach surrounded by palm trees and thousands of party people! Play loud!
Review: Gilles Aiken is not short of space in which to express his distinctive ideas about fusing dancefloor minimalism with a global palette. While his more streamlined house and techno fare is generally released under his Edward alias, Desert Sky has carried some of his wilder ideas with stunning results. The first few releases came shrouded in mystery on a self-titled label, but since then Desert Sky has landed on Assemble Music and Baby Ford's iconic PAL SL. Aiken returns to the latter now with a hefty album project that gives Desert Sky the appropriate room to breathe, and Aiken sounds free spirited and expressive through every inch of tumbling percussion, deft handclaps, spooked out textures and more besides. It's a heady trip through dusty samples configured in fresh, invigorating ways, ranking among the strongest artistic statements Aiken has made to date thanks to its worldly inspiration and otherworldly end results.
