Review: Bowie is a new label that says it intends to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past." The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. 'Golden Years' has lovely live drums and meandering guitar licks for some carefree listening, while 'Fame' has a deep cut groove that rises and falls in dramatic fashion with more neat and tidy riffs adding the detail next to the big licks.

Review: As part of Atlantic's commemoration of 75 years as a label, the early recordings of Genesis are getting a fresh airing in audiophile-quality repressing. This is the band in its purest form, with Peter Gabriel up front, Phil Collins on the drums and Steve Hackett on guitar, when they were a quintessential prog outfit with a peculiarly English sensibility that's all of its own. Nursery Cryme was originally released in 1971 and it features sprawling epics like 'The Return Of The Giant Hogweed', which is as heavy and grooving as it is meandering, and the extravagant opener 'The Musical Box', excerpts of which remained in the band's live set well into the 80s.

Review: Jeopardy is the debut studio album by English post-punk band the Sound, released in November 1980 via Korova. This being the heyday of the commercial music format, the album was released with the expectation of high chart performance, though it flopped on that front. Despite the anticlimax, Jeopardy went down in time as a dark post-punk paragon, invariably lauded by the small crock of critics who did hear it; this pattern would go onto be matched by the overall critical success of the Sound as a a band. The album's neo-noir, paranoiac hooks and exclamatory vocals make up its core aesthetic, though there is something truly authentic, an 'it' factor, that makes Jeopardy unique unto its own; its rapacious compositions, tight melodies and moments of toothy brightness add to this aura; it's as if they paved a hidden way for the more talented of South London bands of today.

These establishing statements decrypted, Ensoulment is a mercurial mood, spanning decries of capital to global surveillance to hope in quick succession. Led by the maverick breakaway post-punk number known as 'Cognitive Dissident', the album instantly hits us with a mood of surveillance-state-subjected paranoia and lament - heard throughout - by way of lyrics musing on 'screen grabs', 'curtailed' and 'servile/surveilled'. The palate is murky, grave, and yet still somewhat somehow funky, with lead brain Matt Johnson playing up a distinctly gruff Waits-esque 'ahh'. Can some flair, some enjoyment, be found in the present muck? Seems so.

Review: Originally released in 1977 (the year of punk's simultaneous birth and more notably, death), (I'm) Stranded has gone on to become, not only one of the most vital pieces of OG Aussie punk, but commonly considered as one of the quintessential early blueprints for an entire generation of artists. Staying on course and not even wading into the creative differences that would soon loom large over each subsequent follow up, this box set arrives as a joint collaboration between L.A. garage rock label In The Red, Universal Music Australia and spearheaded by Feel Presents and The Saints founder Ed Kuepper (later Laughing Clowns), who collectively deliver the original LP remastered for the time in four decades, along with never-before-pressed-to-wax bonus discs of a five-song live performance from Paddington Town Hall in Sydney in 1977, the band's full set from the Hope & Anchor Front Row Festival, London November 1977, all three tracks from the 1977 This Perfect Day 12" and all four tracks from 1977's 1-2-3-4 double 7" single, as well as the previously unreleased 1976 demo mix of the (I'm) Stranded LP. Review: Songs Of A Lost World is Robert Smith and co's first studio record since 2008. In the lead-up to the release, the band dropped cryptic social media hints, mailed postcards revealing the album's title and release date, and even placed a poster at the pub where they played their first show in Crawley. Recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, this album is the band's 14th, featuring the core lineup of Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper, Roger O'Donnell, and Reeves Gabrels. Smith, together with producer Paul Corkett, oversaw the arrangements, while long-time collaborator Andy Vella designed the album's artwork, which showcases Janez Pirnat's 1975 sculpture Bagatelle. Smith has stressed that identifying the opening and closing songs is crucial for the album's development. A record that digs deep into darker, more personal themes, echoing the intensity of their earlier work, the release also includes two live tracks, 'And Nothing Is Forever' and 'I Can Never Say Goodbye', from their Shows Of A Lost World tour.

Review: Primal Scream's first new album in eight years, via BMG, following 2016's Chaosmosis, featuring the lead single 'Love Insurrection' which is currently doing the rounds. It's produced by David Holmes and includes cover art by Jim Lambie. The recording process began in 2019, with Bobby Gillespie initially crafting lyrics solo on an acoustic guitar. Encouraged by producer Holmes, the band recorded across Belfast, London and Los Angeles. Gillespie describes the album as embodying a theme of conflict and resilience, inspired by the Glaswegian term "come ahead," which signifies a defiant spirit. The album marks Primal Scream's first release since the passing of longtime member Martin Duffy in 2022. Come Ahead promises to blend the band's trademark evolution with fresh, bold sounds.
