Review: Canadian thrash/power metal behemoths 3 Inches Of Blood celebrate the 20 year anniversary of their seminal sophomore effort Advance & Vanquish with this long overdue deluxe reissue. Noted for being the final studio endeavour before the departure of original guitarists Sunny Dhak and Bobby Froese (who would reform their prior band Pride Tiger), as well as being the only release to feature bassist Brian Redman and drummer Matt Wood, this Roadrunner Records debut established the band as metallic soothsayers of a retro-fitted variety, line up issues be damned. Bursting with triumphant, virtuosic riffage and lyrics drawing from deep sea pirate adventures, paganism and Lord Of The Rings lore, this is peak early 21st century metallic nerdiness at its most potent and earnest.

Review: Hailing from Ocala, Florida, pop punk/metalcore hybridisers A Day To Remember have become one of the definitive acts of the scene due to their fluid amalgamation of catchy earworm hooks, brutal chugging breakdowns, motivational gang vocals and deft understanding of melody. Originally released in 2009, their third full-length Homesick is often considered their crowning achievement, and has long been out of print and priced at ludicrous mark ups on Discogs for too many a moon. Following recent reissues of For Those Who Have Heart and Common Courtesy, the band celebrate the landmark album's 15 year anniversary with a gatefold deluxe edition, complete with a bonus LP made up of songs taken from a live Switzerland performance in tour of the record, along with acoustic renditions of two album cuts; the title track and 'Another Song About The Weekend'.

A Mirror Of Dreams: The Progressive Rock Revival 1981 To 1983 by Andrew Wild
Cat: 1006427 Rel: 21 Jun 24

For A Mirror Of Dreams, Wild has interviewed no fewer than 85 musicians and other participants in the early 1980s progressive rock scene
Notes: Kingmaker Publishing, run by Big Big Train founder Gregory Spawton and Prog magazine journalist/Big Big Train manager Nick Shilton, is delighted to announce the publication of its latest book. A Mirror Of Dreams - The Progressive Rock Revival 1981 To 1983 by Andrew Wild.

Following Kingmaker's two highly acclaimed books on Genesis (Genesis: 1967 to 1975 - The Peter Gabriel Years and Genesis: 1975 to 2021 - The Phil Collins Years) and several other successful publications (including the autobiography of Marillion keyboardist Mark Kelly, Marillion, Misadventures & Marathons), A Mirror Of Dreams is the first of two books by Wild which provide the definitive account of the intertwined stories of the six bands which led the progressive rock revival: Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon, Solstice and Twelfth Night.

For A Mirror Of Dreams, Wild interviewed no fewer than 85 musicians and other participants in the early 1980s progressive rock scene. These interviews included most of the members of all the aforementioned bands as well as Abel Ganz, Airbridge, Comedy Of Errors, Electric Gypsy, Galahad, Haze, It Bites, Jadis, Janysium, Lahost, The Lens, Liaison, Multi Story, No-Man, Pride Of Passion, Quasar, Tamarisk, Trilogy and Twice Bitten. Additionally Wild spoke with key non-musical figures such as veteran Aylesbury Friars promoter David Stopps, former Marillion manager John Arnison and Nigel Hutchings, the former manager of the legendary Marquee Club in London.

Edited by Spawton and with a 2,000 word foreword by Prog magazine editor Jerry Ewing, the book features over 200 photographs and illustrations, many of which have either been previously unpublished or are very rare.

Spawton comments: "This is a book which I have long wanted to see written. It's the story of how, in the early 1980s, a number of rock bands ignored the naysayers and fashioned a second coming for the much-maligned and misunderstood genre of progressive rock."

Review: Abschaum's Quand Viennent Les Serpents is a captivating exploration that seamlessly merges electronic and rock elements while delving into ambient, folk, and krautrock styles. The album's standout feature lies in its ability to blend folk tones and instruments with abrasive dissonant effects, resulting in a fascinating and dramatic folk adventure. Throughout the album, Abschaum crafts a progressive rock aura, showcasing their prowess in blending electronic and rock influences. Each track offers a meditative and experimental journey, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the band's innovative soundscapes. With its intricate arrangements and dynamic compositions, Quand Viennent Les Serpents pushes the boundaries of traditional music genres, offering a fresh and unique listening experience.

Review: Following on from 2021's excellent Too Mean To Die, German proto-speed/thrash metal pioneers Accept return with their highly anticipated 17th full-length Humanoid. Marking their sixth overall LP with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo handling vocal duties (who has been with the group since their third reunion in 2009), the material here espouses genuine concerns over the increase of AI in modern technology and its careless displacement of artists from varying fields. Emboldened by frenetic, anthemic riffage and soaring melodious hooks, Accept are back to remind all of their vital influence and put every band who've come since back in their quiet little place atop the band's giant shoulders.

Review: Holy Black Mountain Side by Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. is an exploration of psychedelic rock that pushes boundaries and challenges mainstream tastes. Mastered by Taigen Kawabe of Bo Ningen, who also guests on it, the album delves deep into the band's signature soundscape, incorporating traditional elements into an electrifying sonic journey. Recorded between 2021 and 2023 at Acid Mothers Temple in Japan, the album showcases expert production, engineering and mixing by frontman Kawabata Makoto. From dissonant violin passages to pulsating grooves and free-jazz nuances, each track offers a unique sonic experience that impresses and intrigues listeners. Holy Black Mountain Side stays true to the band's early work while also pushing the boundaries of psychedelic rock and themselves.

Review: Following on from last year's critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, Los Angeles-based self-described "ecstatic black metal" outfit Agriculture return with a new EP titled Living Is Easy. Expanding their wall-of-sound sonics even further to conjure a form of saccharine abrasion with barrages of tremolo guitar-picking, blast-beating triumphant fury that echoes the likes of Deafheaven or Liturgy in their most epic moments, this is a form of metallic extremity crafted to help espouse negativity, not through negative sonics but by re-channelling said sonics through dexterous and uplifting cataclysms of audible euphoria. This 12" pressing is also coupled with the band's 2022 debut EP The Circle Chant, which has never been available on vinyl before now.

Cat: VGT 403473. Rel: 10 May 24
Review: Following the breakout success of their acclaimed 2000 sophomore effort Maybe I'll Catch Fire, California gothic pop-punk heroes Alkaline Trio began to outgrow their label Asian Man Records, even being instructed to look for a bigger label-base as the increased demand for physical copies and merch became too much for label head Mike Park to handle. This would eventually lead to the band being courted by Vagrant Records in order to distribute their now commercial and career high point From Here To Infirmary in 2001, which would also serve as their only work with drummer Mike Felumlee before being replaced with punk-drummer extraordinaire Atom Willard for touring purposes. Marking the first sonic shift away from the more angst-riddled chaotic emo-punk of their earlier material, and embracing more melodious and direct compositional song structures, for many, From Here To Infirmary is where Alkaline Trio truly discovered their own musical identity.

Cat: UNROCK 301. Rel: 26 Jul 24
Review: A reissue of 2022's covers single, Alvarius B's 'Karaoke' gets a second run via Unrock. A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Both detail Bishop's talent as a rarely-performed alter-ego, a cosmopolite solo-entertainer.

Review: The duo of Angus & Julia Stone share their sixth full-length album, Cape Forestier. A strikingly poignant and textured set of new recordings, the new LP immediately draws listeners into the simple and endearing vision of Angus and Julia Stone's world; this is a cloaked, atmopsheric Aussie folk album that flaunts the couple's talents in utmost equal measure. Cape Forestier is also a self-described exercise in recognising "how humans choose to treat each other, love each other, and make promises to build something beautiful together." By that, they mean marriage: Cape Forestier's ear for sentiment knows few bounds, with stripped-back, bridal-gowned romances like 'The Wedding Song' commanding an adept ear for candid space and finger-plucking nostalgisms.

Review: 'I'm Totally Fine With It Don't Give A Fuck Anymore' reads the WhatsApp message on the front cover of the upcoming album of the same name by Scottish duo Arab Strap. Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton have been on a blazing nonstop run ever since they reunited the group in 2019. Confronting conspiracy theories, online addiction, and societal decay, the lead single 'Bliss' is a steady reminder of Arab Strap's multi-generational appeal - "It's about women being terrorized online; it's about cowardice and bigotry. It's about how we expose ourselves on social platforms while hiding alone at home. But you can dance to it too!" Moffat said on the press release. As the haunting melodies intertwine with Moffat's gritty regional vocals on the 15-track album, dimly lit dive bars and sketchy alleyways come to mind and not the cyberspace dystopia that many other musicians would go to. It's a unique take on a subject that needs unique takes, an explicit piece of sang prose in an age of censorship. Just the cover alone lets you know that Arab Strap is not going to be added to your easy-listening playlist. The icing on the cake? The cheeky decision to make the disc a bright emoji yellow.

Review: Berlin-based, Canada-born experimenter Aidan Baker tinkers often with slowcore, drone, and avant-garde darkness, both solo and with such groups as Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble and WERL. His latest, Songs Of Undoing, aims at more of a "deconstructed" grunge/slowcore palette, stripping almost every facet of the style back to reveal an impressively unpolished backbone. Musings on reckoning, alienation, and ruination resound across an album of doomy quietude - never going so far as to indulge huge cathartic moments and instead preferring to rest in waveringly gothic, ruminatory recesses.

Review: The Dream of Delphi is the sixth album for the Los Angeles singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Bat For Lashes. Critics have likened her music to the work of Joni Mitchell, Nico, Siouxsie Sioux, Bjork, Kate Bush, Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple and this album reflects on the conception and birth of Khan's daughter Delphi during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Samples of the album are still guarded closely upon writing this but expect more great songwriting, electronic elements and a strong post punk influence. With a release date of late May, this indie exclusive is pressed on red vinyl.

Review: Originally released in 2009, and serving as the ninth overall full-length from controversial extreme metal legends Behemoth, the title of Evangelion comes from the Greek word meaning 'Spreading the word of God' or 'Spreading the Good News', while in typical Nergal fashion, the concept is twisted and inverted beyond recognition with a redefinition of The Great Harlot or Great Whore of Babylon adorning the artwork as an ultimate symbol of rebellion and resistance against God. Critically acclaimed upon release for its virtuosic and oppressive blend of blackened death metal with more occult ambience, while the drum production work of Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames, Dark Funeral) provided the type of dynamic range the band had only previously dipped their frosted toes into, this gorgeous translucent red repress restores all of the project's cavernous greatness to monumentally monolithic heights.

Review: Fresh from the first two successful singles of his solo career, Billy Idol was one of the most recognisable faces in the early 80s, with his popularity rising in tandem with the rise of the music video thanks to MTV. The follow up album to his eponymous debut, Rebel Yell would prove to be his most successful and the most critically acclaimed of his career, with hits coming out of its ears. 'Eyes Without A Face', 'Flesh For Fantasy', 'Catch My Fall' and the title track 'Rebel Yell' all helped to make one of the highest selling records of 1982, making Billy a household name. Musically, Rebel Yell is a new wave album with hard rock and other influences. Steve Stevens powerful guitar riffs that helped fuel Billy Idol's singing were a match made in heaven. Ironically, the album also broke barriers as being a rock album powered by a drum machine - setting a trend that ZZ Top, Iggy Pop and even Judas Priest would follow in subsequent years. This version, spread across two LPs, comes with the original album plus a a few demo versions as well as a remix to 'Eyes Without A Face'. Whether you have an original copy or not, this version is the ideal one to get.

Review: While the tenure of both Ozzy Osborne and Ronnie James Dio as vocalists for metal giants Black Sabbath has been documented, praised and repressed ad nauseam, little discussion is often rewarded to Tony Martin, who actually served as the band's second-longest standing frontman. Finally catalogued in this new box set, Anno Domini: 1989-1995 offers up newly remastered versions of Headless Cross (1989), Tyr (1990), Cross Purposes (1994), and Forbidden (1995), with the latter being remixed entirely by guitarist Tony Iommi for the occasion. Complete with an additional booklet, never before seen photos, a Headless Cross poster and a replica concert book from the Headless Cross Tour; this is the ultimate Martin-era fan service that will be long overdue to many a veteran metalhead.

Review: When people think Black Sabbath, they're most likely thinking of their initial tenure with the incomparable Ozzy Osbourne, while then there's the other camp who recognise the greatness of the Oz-Man but opt to worship at the shrine of Ronnie James Dio. Unfairly forgotten to time, however, is the 90s tenure of the metal giants' third vocalist Tony Martin, who would ultimately serve as their second-longest running frontman across 1989's Headless Cross, 1990's Tyr, 1994's Cross Purposes and 1995's Forbidden. Now, for the first time, this entire era comes home to vinyl via Anno Domini: 1989-1995, with remasters of the entire collection, and a fully remixed version of Forbidden handled by nine-fingered guitar hero Tony Iommi himself. Also included are a thick booklet, previously unseen photos, a poster from the Headless Cross tour as well as a replica concert book. For the often forgotten third subset of Sabbath diehards, Tony Martin finally has his flowers.

Review: Sheffield metalheads Black Spiders deliver a riveting debut with Can't Die, Won't Die, squarely laying down the un-f*ck-withable ethic that is 'all killer, no filler'. Known for their hooking slogans such as "eat thunder, shit lightning!" and now "alright, alright, alright", the Yorkshire rippers take after Matthew McConaughey across twelve sonic napalm-drops, burning brightly for a second time after a surprise reunion following a breakup before the pandemic. Upping the usual pace of blues rock to breakneck, rubber-biting tempi, tracks such as 'Driving My Rooster' and 'Destroyer' elicit Red Wally recollections of Motorhead, with a surfeit of restless energy and unmoved movement, as they aim to reclaim the unriddled joy of bird-flipping the audience.

Review: The Blossom Toes' single Postcard is a gem, with the Side-1 offering a gentle, well-crafted pop song reminiscent of Sgt. Pepper's. 'Postcard's' light, jaunty melody is irresistibly catchy, earning comparisons to Paul McCartney's Beatles work. The Side-2, a jazzy minor-key lament, features a superb solo by Brian Godding, evoking the psychedelic vibe of the era. Overall, this obscure non-LP single stands out as a favorite Blossom Toes release, encapsulating the band's diverse musical influences and showcasing their talent for crafting memorable tunes.

Review: Blue Cheer are the cult choice for those who adore their seminal hard rock from the end of the 60s. They might not have reached the fame of Hendrix, Zeppelin and the like, but they were just as influential and daring in their approach. After the wild impact of their debut album Vincebus Eruptus they followed up in quick fashion with Outsideinside, which legend has it was so loud in places it had to be partially recorded outside. Whatever the case, there is more than enough psych-tinted blues rock brilliance to sink your teeth into on this 1968 album, which gets repressed in blue and shows the band at their scuzzy, squalling best on anti-classics like 'Sun Cycle'.

Review: BMX Bandits' latest album, Dreamers On The Run, stands as their most ambitious yet, dedicated to the outsiders of the world. Founded in 1985 by Duglas T Stewart and Sean Dickson, the band's ever-evolving lineup has included luminaries from various indie acts. Mastered by Hifi Sean, and featuring guest appearances from Jowe Head and Calvin Johnson, the album delves into the realms of dreams and music amid the challenges of reality. Drawing inspiration from Womack and Womack, Motown, and Todd Rundgren, the album boasts soul-tinged pop arrangements and captivating guitar solos. 'The Things You Threw Away showcases collaboration with New York's Jay Jay Lozano, infusing classic American musical and romantic song influences. With its rich musical tapestry and poignant themes, Dreamers On The Run is a gem in their stellar discography.

Review: Perhaps snatching the crown for best North of England band name since English Teacher, Bored At My Grandmas House (the singer-songwriter project of Leeds-based musician Amber Strawbridge) presents a fresh new album, Show, Don't Tell, following the titular mantra to an absolute T, across a beautifully recorded 12-track indie album that indeed poses more questions than it answers (in a great way). With its subject matters candid (earning trust, social reticence, general early-twenties angst) and its song structures bite-sized, the overarching style is Bedroom Pop with capital Bs and Ps, blowing the rest of the competition out of the bunkbed studio with its simple chorus treatments, hypnotic guitar riffs and deft instrumental contributions from bassist and producer Alex Greaves and drummer Niall Summerton.

Review: David Bowie's Diamond Dogs is a seminal album in his career, released in 1974 amid the glam rock era. The album plunges into a dystopian world, with Bowie adopting the persona of Halloween Jack, a feral survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Songs like 'Rebel Rebel' and 'Diamond Dogs' capture the album's raw energy and cynicism, while '1984' reflects Bowie's fascination with George Orwell's novel. Diamond Dogs remains a very important record to Bowie's artistic vision and musical prowess. While many remember the album as the transition period between Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke, the music is equally as memorable. Its themes of alienation, rebellion, and survival continue to resonate with listeners today, making this anniversary edition a valuable addition to any Bowie fan's collection.

Review: Sony records is celebrating 50 years in music in 2024 and coincidentally, Diamond Dogs by David Bowie is also sharing that same timeline. Considered by many, to be the last album released of his glam rock period after disbanding his backup band The Spiders From Mars. With his career direction in some question and longtime guitarist Mick Ronson gone, you have arguably one of the interesting studio albums of his career. Led by the hit 'Rebel Rebel', the album marked a turn for Bowie's songwriting having been inspired by a recent interview he did for Rolling Stone with WIlliam S Burroughs. An admirer of Burroughs' working methods and his 1964 novel Nova Express, Bowie revealed he had begun using Burroughs's "cut-up" technique as a way for inspiration. Ultimately, Diamond Dogs is most important for being the transition point from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke which catapulted Bowie's success in the United States. While only having one modest hit from the album, Diamond Dogs was still a big success. In hindsight, it would also help establish David Bowie as an artist where fans wanted to hear his entire work and not just a single's worth and to Bowie, that showed that his personality was winning over his audience and that his new direction was a good choice.

Review: David Bowie's Rock 'n' Roll Star! chronicles the boy from Bromley's transformative journey that culminated in his Ziggy Stardust masterpiece. Spanning from February 1971 to the recording of 1972's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, this compilation presents 14 rare and previously unreleased tracks that trace Bowie's artistic metamorphosis. From early Ziggy Session takes to alternative versions and outtakes, this vinyl release offers an intimate glimpse into Bowie's creative process. Each track reveals a different facet of the artist, from the proto-glam of 'Hang On To Yourself' to the soaring balladry of 'Holy Holy.' The album culminates with two iconic performances: an energetic Top Of The Pops rendition of 'Starman' and an alternative version of 'John, I'm Only Dancing' that showcases Bowie's diverse musical talents. Mastered at half-speed, this black vinyl LP provides an immersive and nuanced listening experience.

Review: 1977 is often considered the year that punk peaked and then died, when in actuality the genre and scene were only starting to truly take root around this time, with several iconic contributions such as the self-titled debut LP from homegrown London outfit The Boys. Born out of the departure of Matt Dangerfield from London SS, and Casino Steel from Hollywood Brats, the pair would land a record deal with NEMS off of the strength of their debut single, 'I Don't Care', leading to touring as support for John Cale of Velvet Underground, while the arrival of their quintessential pop-inflected scrappy pub-punk full-length would see them joining the John Peel Sessions alumni later that same year.

Review: Following the initial success of their self-titled debut released in November of 1977, London's own punk pride The Boys would spend their first Christmas as a truly established band recording the seasonal single 'Run Rudolph Run' under their holiday moniker The Yobs. Entering into 1978 strong, their sophomore LP Alternative Chartbusters is often held in much higher regard than the band's pub-rock peer-reflecting debut, due to its fearless embracing of pop hooks and more melodious compositions, with the lead single 'Brickfield Nights' highly regarded as one of the quintessential pieces of early British power-pop-punk. While mostly ignored in their home country, this album cycle saw Boysmania engulf Europe, with grafitti popping up in Norway and garnering legions of followers across Holland, beginning to dry the cement on the band's already-in-the-making legacy.

Review: Jackpot US reissue the 1967 Impulse! standout and instrumental masterpiece from Mel Brown, Chicken Fat. Initially working as a guitar player for such greats as Sonny Boy Williamson & Etta James, Impulse! eventually offered Mel Brown the chance to record his own material. Recorded in 1967 in Hollywood, CA, Brown amassed a group of session musicians who had previously played with Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye, and Dizzy Gillespie. Much of the album was arranged by Oliver Nelson, who worked with Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith and more. His touch is felt all over the record and helps solidify the journey; these sessions reflect the Sunset Strip and the energy of late 60s Los Angeles so accurately that you can almost hear the go-go boots hit the floor.

Review: Bernard Butler's Good Grief album marks his triumphant return to solo work after a hiatus of 25 years, during which he delved into diverse musical endeavours from pop songwriting to producing acclaimed albums with various artists. Reflecting on his journey, Butler candidly shares his apprehensions and eventual rediscovery of his solo voice, culminating in the creation of this album. Drawing inspiration from his experiences and collaborations, Butler's songwriting process for the LP was deeply introspective, allowing him to confront his emotions and craft lyrics that resonate with authenticity. The album encapsulates three decades of Butler's musical evolution, weaving together themes of loss, joy, and bewilderment. Butler's melodies are poignant and evocative, accompanied by his signature guitar work and soulful vocals. A testament to his enduring talent and a welcome return for fans of his solo work.

Live At The Shepherds Bush Empire 2003 (DVD: Full Concert On DVD)
Review: A live double album 2xCD + DVD combo from our sugar-coated punk heroes Buzzcocks, recorded at London's iconic Shepherds Bush Empire in 2003 whilst promoting their self-titled comeback album. Boasting new cuts from said LP such as 'Jerk', 'Wake Up Call', and, 'Driving You Insane', peppered amongst essential classics like 'I Don't Mind', 'Fast Cars', 'Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't Have)?' and 'I Don't Know What to Do with My Life', this iteration of the group featured Tony Barber on bass and Philip Barker on drums, accompanying the late great Pete Shelley and the now-bandleader Steve Diggle. 32 doses of saccharine hooks, fuzzy guitars and powerpop punk beauty transmitted from over two decades ago directly to your ear canals.

Look To The East, Look To The West
Review: Glasgow indie pop sonic-photographers Camera Obscura have always been masters of subtlety and this sense of finesse only hears a bolstering on the new record Look To The East, Look To The West. After the sad loss of their former founding member and keyboardist Carey Lander in 2015, the group took the time out for a much-needed hiatus before reuniting for the recording of this personally redemptive full-length. Led by the soft, tambouring jangles of 'Big Love', the album's lead single, we're met with an elegiac but ultimately hopeful recollection, via its lovingly prodding lyrics ("it was a big love, she said, the kind of big love that made you easily led") and sonic resemblance of Waylon Jennings.

Look To The East, Look To The West
Review: Camera Obscura has emerged with their compelling album Look to the East, Look to the West, showcasing their evolution and confidence. This album unveils the band's core emotions, evoking both sadness and exhilaration. The album follows the loss of keyboardist Carey Lander and a hiatus, yet the band regrouped to craft a poignant work. With Donna Maciocia joining, they created tracks that explore themes of love, loss, and longing, leaving listeners emotionally stirred. This Scottish group's first new album in over a decade, it masterfully blends sadness and exhilaration, leaving listeners emotionally rearranged.

Review: Live in Aston 1977, the latest installment in Can's series of live album releases, offers a fresh perspective on the band's dynamic stage presence. Released via Mute and Future Days, this release provides a glimpse into a challenging period for Can, following the mixed reception of their eighth studio album, Saw Delight. Despite any expectations of a decline in energy or creativity, the live performances captured on this album defy such notions. Instead, they showcase Can's enduring vitality and adaptability, reaffirming their reputation as a band capable of captivating audiences with their unpredictable live shows. Notably, Live in Aston 1977 marks the debut of bassist Rosko Gee (Traffic) within the Can Live series. His addition to the lineup injects a fresh energy into the band's sound, complementing the innovative contributions of Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli, and Holger Czukay. Accompanied by a booklet, this release offers fans a deeper insight into Can's live performances during this period. It serves as a reminder of the band's relentless pursuit of sonic exploration and improvisation, making it a valuable addition to the Can discography for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Review: Caoilfhionn Rose's third album, Constellation, marks a significant evolution in her artistic journey with her exploration of experimental sounds and themes in response to the challenges of the post-COVID era. Rooted in folk, jazz, and classic tunesmith traditions, the album creates a captivating, otherworldly space by blending Rose's core piano with synths and incorporating a diverse range of musical elements. Featuring contributions from notable musicians like Halsall's rhythm section, Jordan Smart from Mammal Hands, and John Ellis, Constellation weaves together various influences and sounds to create a rich tapestry of musical expression. Rose's openness to collaboration shines through, with each track serving as a collage of influences and textures. Producer Aaron Wood's ambient samples add a layer of textured loveliness throughout the album, enhancing its depth and complexity. Constellation is a bold exploration of musical possibilities, demonstrating Rose's willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of her sound.

Review: The Spotlight Kid was Captain Beefheart's sixth studio album and one, landing a mere three years after the legendary Trout Mask Replica classic, sees him continuing his avant-garde brilliance. Initially released in 1972, it stands out as the only album credited solely to Captain Beefheart, even though it does feature much of his Magic Band prominently. The material, integral to the band's repertoire, highlights Beefheart's eclectic musical vision and experimental spirit, taking raw blues as its starting point but then twisting into it hithertoo unrecognisable shapes and psychedelic distortions. Reissued for Record Store Day 2024 as a deluxe double LP set in a gatefold jacket with milky clear vinyl, this edition revitalises the album's enigmatic charm for contemporary audiences and reminds us all of its magnificent blend of blues, rock and avant-garde elements.

Review: Man In Black may be the 38th album by country singer Johnny Cash, but it is definitely one of the most memorable albums in his discography. The album is perhaps one of Cash's most political albums, with the title nodding at Cash's tendency to wear only black during his live shows. This was to reflect the turbulent times during the Vietnam War; a message also reflected in the album's lyrics, from the singles 'Man in Black' to 'Singin' In Viet Nam Talkin' Blues', both of which can be seen as his most important protest songs. All this makes the album a unique milestone in his career and still a must for all Johnny Cash fans. Man in Black is available as a limited edition of 2500 individually numbered copies on crystal-clear vinyl.

Review: There's no fucking around with this record," says Nick Cave of his new album alongside the Bad Seeds. "When it hits, it hits. It lifts you. It moves you. I love that about it." And we do too. It makes a great return after a five-year break for the band and across its ten tunes it plays with ideas of both convention and experimentation. It is full of surprises an of course rich in emotion and the sort of mental imagery Cave has always excelled at next to offering up plenty of heartfelt narratives. Guests such as Colin Greenwood on bass and Luis Almau on nylon string guitar and acoustic guitar add extra layers to what is a fine return.

Review: Nick Cave & The Bad seeds present their first album in five years, Wild God, following 2019's Ghosteen. A testament to the band's recent spell of happiness, the stylistic and emotional complexity of Wild God is reflective of the complex emotional state a songwriter can find themselves in after a period of pain and tumult. It is indeed a "complicated record" (Cave's own words), with every cameo from David Fridmann to Jonny Greenwood in tow, conjuring up gothic romantic fantasies ("he flew through the city like a prehistoric bird" and "she died in a bedsit in 1993") and candidly heartfelt instrumentation, but with a kooky edge. Though the singles released so far err on the side of convention, our inside intel indicates the presence of an overall rock-genre-bending record elsewhere, owing to a happy period of reconnection and creative synergy experienced by the band.

Review: It's been a full five years since Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released an original full-length LP. Their last was Ghosteen, the final of three albums to complete the triptych that also included Push The Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016). This makes Wild God something of a special one, marking the first time Cave and company have struck out on an isolable creative limb in over a decade. Unlike the heartfelt grief-stricken groundswells of the previous three albums, Wild God is an avowed 'deeply and joyously infectious' album that marks a return to Cave's reputable, searching, soul-stirring songwriting form; full of the same idiosyncrasies that formed the greatness of latter-day albums like Dig, Lazarus, Dig, albeit with a crazed edge that has perhaps never been heard before.
