The Mexican (Mister Mushi Special edit)
The Mexican (Mister Mushi Special edit - instrumental)
Review: When British prog rock band Babe Ruth recorded 'The Mexican' - a low-slung funk-rock workout that came complete with weighty bass and killer drum breaks - they could have had no idea of the impact it would have during the block party phase of hip-hop's evolution (or, for that matter, that Jellybean Benitez would record a Latin hip-hop cover in the early 80s). It's the track's significance within hip-hop that inspired these revisions from break-digger Mister Mushi. Both of the producer's 'Special Edit' versions - vocal on the A-side, instrumental on the flip - make the most of the track's prototype hip-hop breaks, restless bassline and Latin-tinged fuck-rock guitar licks. They're basically the breaker-friendly revisions the dancers want and need.

Review: The classic Joy Division pop standard 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' hears a 7" single/cover version in roots/one drop/lovers rock style, courtesy of Crucial Rockers and Tina Zando. The Aussie dream team deliver the version for Afrotropik, raising room temperatures to swelteringly libidinous levels against a backdrop of glottal vocals, loving vocal oohs, and heartbeating offbeat bubbles. For more inquisitive fans, and another for the post-punk heads mind you, you've also got a version of Buzzcocks' 'Ever Fallen In Love' on the B-side.

Review: Sade's 1992 album, Love Deluxe, immerses listeners in a luxurious blend of quiet storm, r&b and jazz-pop, enveloping Sade Adu's evocative expressions of desire and heartache. Emerging from the mid-'80s UK jazz-pop scene, Sade perfected a sound that fused jazz, bossa nova, and soul with a modern, streamlined edge. From their beginnings as a fusion of former members of post-punk and new wave bands, Sade the band evolved into a cohesive unit, crafting seamless compositions that seamlessly merged soulful staircases of sound with liquid-crystal pop-funk. Love Deluxe stands as their most monolithic work, a sonic journey characterised by its ethereal fluidity. Sade's music became synonymous with cosmopolitan exotica, transporting listeners to a world of jet-setting luxury and romantic introspection. Adu's introspective lyricism explores themes of love and longing with a depth that transcends traditional romanticism, delving into the complexities of human emotion. The album's production, marked by programmed beats and a minimalist approach to instrumentation, aligns it with the emerging trip-hop genre, characterized by its fusion of lushness and dread. The precise interplay of drums, synth, and guitar creates an immaculate sonic landscape, perfectly complementing Adu's mesmerizing vocals. Each track on Love Deluxe"serves as a poignant exploration of love's multifaceted nature, from the relentless devotion depicted in 'No Ordinary Love' to the introspective character studies of 'Feel No Pain' and 'Pearls. Through Adu's evocative storytelling and the band's masterful instrumentation, Love Deluxe transcends mere romanticism, offering a profound meditation on the mysteries of love, birth, and death. It's an album that defies easy categorization, inviting listeners to lose themselves in its blissful abstraction and emotional depth.

Lovers Rock
It's Only Love That Gets You Through
Review: Sade's Lovers Rock marks a significant evolution in the band's sound and image. Departing from their signature luxuriance, the album embraces a sparser, knottier sound that beautifully balances past influences with contemporary trends. Adu's vocals, thick and low as ever, blend seamlessly into the breezy landscape of acoustic guitar, reggae bass, and simple percussion, creating an atmosphere of understated sensuality. The album's themes range from new love to motherhood to societal issues, showcasing Adu's lyrical prowess and her ability to navigate the complexities of human emotions. Lovers Rock also pays homage to the cultural influence of Caribbean Britishness, both in its title and its musical style, adding depth to Sade's sonic palette. While the album was released amid a pop landscape dominated by shiny, slick productions, Sade remained true to their sound, avoiding obvious trends and opting for a more introspective approach. The album's impact reverberates through contemporary music and allowed Sade to maintain their unique identity and continue evolving with each release.

Review: Sunsay & The Soul Surfers' cover of William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is a smooth and classy rendition of the 1974 original. The funk and soul influences are evident in the laid-back groove and sultry vocals, creating a timeless and sophisticated sound. With Massive Attack's 1991 cover also gaining recognition, this song has become a staple in the genres of funk and soul. The 7' vinyl reissue from 2024 remains faithful to the original release, capturing the essence of the track in its entirety. Review: This is a reissue of a rare soul single by The Nu' Rons, a vocal quartet from Salem, NJ who recorded only around four singles in their still-strong career. Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

In an era dominated by bombastic pop acts, her signature blend of smooth grooves and restrained emotion still stands out today. The album maintains that classic sound while subtly incorporating new elements, like the dub-esque snare crashes on 'Babyfather.' Review: The debut album from Mississippi soul legends The Natural Four, Good Vibes! deserves this full reissue on Wax Trader, which puts a dent in its former obscurity and rareness. An early LP incarnation of Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January and Al Bowden in unison, the album delivers the posi-vibes it promises and then some. But despite its commitment to a good time, the Four don't fall prey to the idea that such vibes necessarily mean avoiding of slow jams; indeed, star cuts like 'Why Should We Stop Now' are as pleading and longing in tone as they are premonitory of the relationship at hand going well; things get even wild-Wester on 'Message From A Black Man', amounting to a multifaceted take on the stated good vibe.

The album opens with the lead single 'Portals,' an invitation to a new way of thinking. Just two crisp, piquant, fresh, and bubbly uncorkings in sound - 'Life', featuring vocalist Emi Tawata, and the instrumental 'Master Blaster'- are here heard sprayed like buckshot across the stereo system. The former is a candid admission by Tawata of her fear of the dark and ghosts, one which compels the listener to ponder the song's spiritual metaphor - "I'd rather have a piece of toast, watch the evening news" being the lyric of note - while the latter is a comparatively muted four-to-the-floor funk inflammation, held together by a phat but tricksy drum line and overgirding Rhodes.

Carnaval De L'Esprit
Review: Major Keys revisits the jazz-funk classics with Gary Bartz's Music is My Sanctuary, now making its debut on a 12-inch. This 1977 gem, featuring the double Grammy-winning saxophonist, is an evergreen floorfiller, remastered for DJs and vinyl enthusiasts alike. With Syreeta Wright on vocals, Bill Summers and James Mtume on percussion, and arrangements by Larry Mizell, this track assembles top-tier talent. The lyrics are joyful and heartfelt, all anchored by Bartz's glorious saxophone. It's a timeless piece for both the mind and the dance floor. On Side-2, Carnaval De L'Esprit, is a lesser-known but equally brilliant jazz-funk masterpiece. Its sunny vibe lifts even the weariest spirits, cementing Major Keys as a must-have label. This record is a treasure that will be revisited time and again.

Review: Canada's famously vibrant funk scene has given rise to many gems over the years and now one of them is getting a reissue on P-Vine complete with an obi-strip. The Sidewinders' much-coveted album, Flatfoot Hustlin' is a real gem that emanates the spirit of deep-rooted funk. Famously it was recorded in the same studio as Professor Lett and Study's Love Serenade which further details about it have long been unknown and mysterious. That has only added to its allure and appeal amongst the rare groove community but of course, the music itself is the real draw. Featured tracks like 'I Like To Dance' and 'Flat Foot Hustli'' cannot fail to ignite dancefloors, while 'Time For Loving' is a more smooth groove and 'Gift to the Sun' gets nice and heavy making this an essential cop for funk aficionados.

Review: Celestial Echo brings us more modern soul magic with the reissue of Glenda McLeod's No Stranger To Love. This track, a beloved crossover between Modern and Northern Soul scenes, has been a collector's favorite, with original copies fetching well over L100. The synth-heavy funk tune caught the attention of Dam-Funk and the Stones Throw crew, boosting its popularity through online mixes. Officially reissued for the first time in 40 years, this record is licenced and remastered to perfection. The vocal version features a smooth electronic sound, high BPM, and classy vocals that captivate from the start. The instrumental version lets the lush synths and groovy rhythm shine. No Stranger To Love is a must-have for funk and soul enthusiasts. This record is hot!

Review: Gloria Scott's What Am I Gonna Do is hailed as one of the greatest soul records, a masterpiece produced by Barry White that exudes class and emotion. Released in 1974, it stuns listeners with its lush instrumentation and Scott's remarkable vocal talent. The album's tracks, from the standout opener 'What Am I Gonna Do' to the beloved 'Too Much Love Makin',' are considered classics, each resonating with soulful depth. While initially overlooked commercially, the album's re-issue shows its enduring brilliance. Remastered to perfection, it offers new dimensions to the listening experience. Scott's vocals are elevated by White's masterful arrangements, particularly evident in soulful ballads like 'It's Better To Have No Love' and 'Love Me Love Me Love Me or Leave Me Leave Me Leave Me.' Highlighted by the sweeping strings and propulsive rhythm of 'What Am I Gonna Do,' the album is a must-have for fans of smooth r&b and Barry White's talents.

Review: Chicago was a hotbed for talent in the 1970s (well, it always has been and always will be, to be honest) and one of the groups to emerge at that time was Heaven & Earth, a vital soul vocal collective. They released four high-quality albums and this one, 'I Can't Seem To Forget You', was the first on Clarence Johnson's G.E.C. Label. It is packed with super sweet vocals and Dwight Dukes' lush falsetto and has never before been reissued. This version from the good folks at P-VINE has an extra bonus cut 'Promises,' which has previously only been available as a single from 1975.

Meanwhile, over in the Bahamas, Frank Penn's G.B.I studio captured Stephen Colebrook's Doobie Brothers-inspired 'Stay Away From Music,' perfect for the cruise ship crowd. This trio, housed in a bespoke Numero sleeve paying homage to WIRL (West Indies Records Ltd.), celebrates the rich, diverse sounds of the Caribbean. This 45 is a delightful exploration of rare, danceable tracks that epitomize the era's lively musical spirit.

Review: Parlor Greens' debut album, In Green / We Dream, is an exhilarating entry into heavy instrumental music. This fresh organ trio, featuring Tim Carman (GA-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves, formerly Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ, delivers a masterful blend of soul, jazz, and funk. Scone's impeccable organ work, honed through years of soul jazz and Daptone sessions, pairs perfectly with James' signature funky guitar and Carman's rock-solid, blues-infused drumming. Recorded at Colemine Records' new Portage Lounge studio in Loveland, Ohio, the chemistry was immediate. Within minutes of plugging in, the trio wrote and recorded 'West Memphis,' setting the tone for the rest of the album. Over three days, they crafted 11 tracks - ten originals - capturing a raw, soulful energy straight to tape. The result is a stunning collection of music, mixed beautifully for a vintage yet fresh sound. In Green / We Dream is a fantastic debut, showcasing Parlor Greens' collective genius and undeniable groove.

For this one he serves up his own distinctive cover of Al Green's classic mellow songs 'Let's Stay Together' and 'I'm Still In Love With You'. Review: The creation of Got A Story To Tell was a transformative journey for Thee Sacred Souls, recorded and produced at Daptone’s Penrose Recorders by Gabriel Roth in Riverside, CA. Written amidst the whirlwind of their acclaimed 2022 album tour, the process tested and strengthened the band, leading to their most compelling songs yet. Founding members Alejandro Garcia, Salvador Samano, and Josh Lane crafted the album, enriched by a lineup of horn players, string artists, percussionists, organists, and background vocalists. Notably, Larry Rendon from Thee Midniters, an iconic East LA band, joined on saxophone, connecting the album to soul music's rich history. Got A Story To Tell resonates with a timeless quality, blending soul influences with a contemporary edge. Tracks like the empowering 'Lucid Girl,' driven by Garcia's potent drums and Samano's resonant bass, set a vibrant tone. The album unfolds with narratives and characters, from the psychedelic allure of 'Waiting On The Right Time' to the poignant plea for empathy in 'One and the Same.' Their rise has been meteori with the viral hit in 'Can I Call You Rose,' and acclaimed live performances on NPR's Tiny Desk and major TV shows. With festival debuts and sold-out shows, Thee Sacred Souls continue to build fans with their electrifying blend of soulful storytelling and musical unity.

Review: Big Crown Records proudly presents Perak, the debut album from Thee Marloes. Their soul sound might initially seem familiar with its weighty drums, crooning guitar, and Natassya Sianturi's beautiful voice singing about love's complexities. Yet, their music offers something undeniably distinct and new, emerging from their hometown of Surabaya, Indonesia. Thee Marloes, consisting of Natassya on vocals and keys, Tommy Satwick on drums, and Sinatrya ('Raka') Dharaka on guitar and production, blend universal elements of soul, jazz, and pop with a unique local flavor. Their introduction began with 'Midnight Hotline,' a punchy, dancefloor-ready track with an infectious chorus and jazzy guitar licks. Others like 'Thank You' is a heartfelt soul ballad sung in Indonesian, breaking language barriers with its palpable emotion. Perak balances high-energy tracks and heartfelt ballads. 'I Know' is a mid-tempo burner about uncovering lies in a love affair, while 'Not Today' grooves with feel-good vibes perfect for a Sunday morning. 'Mungkin Saja' amps up the tempo with a dancefloor vibe, and 'True Love' dips into soulful jazz. 'Over' starts with a heavy drum break, evolving into an epic melody-laden arrangement depicting the chaos of a sudden breakup. Perak is full of great soul music from Surabaya, showing Thee Marloes' passion and joy in creating music. Their charm and relatable sentiment ensure this album will be cherished and played for years to come.

Written and produced by label owner Wilbert Longmire, who also features on guitar here, he joins the likes of William L Johnson for a loving stylistic homage to the likes of James Brown and Curtis Mayfield here. Both 'Gee, How I Miss You' and 'Doon-Chang' express the sultrier and waltzier respective ends of the Jades' sound; don't let their name fool you, as they're anything but 'jaded', with the former track flaunting their lithely harmonic acapella abilities and the latter reflecting a more sexually tense atmosphere, one that hardly assumes a thing.

Review: City pop thrived at a unique intersection of time, culture, and genre during Japan's economic boom in the 70s and 80s. This era of optimism contrasted sharply with the darker times of war and occupation. Taeko Ohnuki, a pivotal figure in city pop, drew heavy influence from American pop artists like Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan, who themselves were inspired by jazz fusion greats like Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. Thus, city pop, and Ohnuki's Mignonne in particular, is a perfect product of its time, uniquely Japanese yet globally influenced. Mignonne is more than feel-good yacht rock; it carries a melancholic depth that rewards attentive listening. While ballads dominate the album, Ohnuki’s voice—soft and mournful on tracks like "??????" and "???"—evokes the intimacy of a jazz singer in a smoky 1978 lounge. Yet, upbeat tracks like "??????" with its killer flute solos, add dynamic variety. The album’s lead single, '4:00A.M.,' stands out as a masterpiece with its smoky flute intro and chorus that beautifully contrasts with Ohnuki's voice. While some argue that Mignonne doesn't surpass its predecessor Sunshower, it remains a beloved classic. A timeless and evolving beauty of Taeko Ohnuki’s music.

Review: Parlor Greens' debut album, In Green We Dream, is a prime example of the raw energy and collaborative spirit that defines their sound. Comprised of seasoned musicians Tim Carman on drums, Jimmy James on guitar, and Adam Scone on organ, this organ trio from Colemine Records dives headfirst into a rich blend of jazz, soul, and funk. The album bursts with vintage vibes reminiscent of Blue Note and Prestige records, yet infused with their distinct flair. From the lively groove of 'Parlor Strut,' where Jimmy James's guitar work shines with rhythm and precision, to the soulful sway of 'Sugar Maple,' each track features their musical chemistry and individual strengths. Adam Scone's masterful command of the organ adds depth and soulfulness throughout, drawing from his extensive experience in the soul revival scene. Recorded at Colemine's Portage Lounge, the album captures the spontaneity and magic of their initial jam session, yielding ten original compositions and a cover, all delivered with infectious energy and tight musicianship. In Green We Dream not only pays homage to their influences like Grant Green and The Meters but also establishes Parlor Greens as a band to look out for in contemporary music.

Review: The Harlem Gospel Travelers' new album, Rhapsody, is a vibrant exploration of the diverse musical influences that shaped their sound. Released on limited edition Rhapsody Swirl Vinyl with gold foil stamping on the cover, this album is ideal for collectors or those looking for something special. Vocalists Ifedayo Gatling, Dennis Bailey, and George Marage delve into the 1960s era when gospel began incorporating soul and funk elements. Inspired by Numero Group's 2006 release, Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal, the album reinterprets gospel funk tracks with their unique flair, from the high-energy 'God's Been Good to Me' to the hip-hop-inflected 'Get Involved.' Having gained acclaim with their debut, He's On Time (2019), and their 2021 follow-up, Look Up!, the trio, guided by mentor Eli "Paperboy" Reed, continues to push boundaries. Rhapsody is both a nod to the past and a bold step forward, blurring genre lines and redefining gospel music. The balance of traditional gospel while fusing newer genres with it is nothing short of breathtaking.

The Love That I Feel
Mallet Groove
Review: Arjuna Oakes' Abbreviations on 7" vinyl is a delightful journey through jazz and soul. Side-1 features 'The Love That I Feel,' a soulful track brimming with emotional depth and vibrant energy. Oakes' expressive vocals and the band's tight performance, especially with the legendary Nathan Haines, create an uplifting and captivating experience. On Side-2, 'Mallet Groove' offers a contrasting, yet equally engaging, experience. This downtempo track is soothing and gentle, with beautifully played keys that set a relaxing mood. The groove is soft and inviting, drawing listeners into its calming embrace. The emotional drive within the music is palpable, making it a deeply compelling piece that encourages introspection. Overall, Abbreviations shows Arjuna Oakes' ability to blend soulful performances with smooth, relaxing grooves, making it a standout release in contemporary jazz and soul.
