TECH TALK:
The AD-9 Pro starts with a string of low gain, low voltage op amps designed to boost the signal and shape the sound without adding distortion. Signal then passes to a THAT4315s Compander - a precision low voltage, low noise Compander IC designed to boost signal while killing any noise. This IC brings the input signal up to an ideal level and keeps it there as notes decay. This is good for signal-to- noise ratio and also gives the delay chips a clean, strong signal to work with.

The 4 x Maxon MC4107D BBD delay IC's are controlled by two clock driver IC's. The driver is running the BBDs at a very low clock rate to achieve maximum delay time. This rolls off a fair amount of high frequencies, giving the AD-9 a big, warm delay sound.

The delay circuit has a switchable tap that grabs midstream delayed signal and adds it back in with the main delay signal. This setup is very reminiscent of the multi-head feature on vintage tape echoes (Roland Space Echo, etc.).

Both the tapped and untapped signals are sent through their own sets of filtering op amps (3 apiece) which help get rid of clock noise and hiss. Then the signal is sent through another THAT4315s Compander chip and into a mixing Op Amp (where the clean signal is mixed with the delay) and out.

The AD-9 Pro features Mechanical True Bypass switching on both outputs via a Fujisoku 4PDT switch.

NOTE ON POWERING THE AD-9 Pro - this pedal's voltage regulator IC requires a high inrush current of approximately 2000 mA upon startup. When using with a Power Brick such as the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+, this pedal should be connected to a high current power jack when possible.

If it is not possible to connect to a high current jack, you can power the AD-9 Pro by leaving a battery in the pedal. Upon initial start-up, unplug the external DC power input cable, engage the pedal, and then plug the DC power input cable back in - the pedal will now power up normally off the external power supply until you power down your pedalboard.

Notes: The AD999's Delay tone is pure analog heaven - rich, round and three-dimensional, it reacts to your playing and breathes life into your performance.

The AD999 is loaded with eight custom Bucket Brigade IC's for 900 milliseconds of warm, organic analog tone. These BBD's are clocked extremely low to achieve the longest delay time possible, creating a HUGE delay tone that recalls early 70's Pink Floyd with stunning accuracy.

Yet the real magic of the AD999 is in the Delay repeats - they exhibit a slightly overdriven tonality that sits perfectly behind dirty tones and adds depth and dimension to clean sounds. This distortion reacts dynamically to your pick attack, making the initial repeat pop slightly while the remaining repeats blend seamlessly with your original notes.

The repeats also feature a slight EQ spike at around 1.5 kHz, preventing them from getting muddy or non-descript. This also allows the AD999 to maintain presence in a mix without having to raise your volume.

While there are more affordable and more feature-laden Delays out there, you'd be hard-pressed to find one that sounds better than the AD999. When players wax poetic about the mojo and mystery of analog delay - THIS is what they are talking about.

TECH TALK:
A high impedance input buffer passes signal to a Compander stage that acts as a compressor/expander, bringing the input signal up to an ideal level and keeping it there as it decays. This is good for signal-to- noise ratio and also gives the delay chips a clean, strong signal to work with.

The eight x Maxon MC4107D BBD delay IC's are controlled by 2 of the 3 clock drivers in the pedal. These drivers are running the BBDs at a very low clock rate to achieve maximum delay time. This rolls off a fair amount of high frequencies, giving the AD999 its big, warm delay sound.

Notes: The FA10 Fuzz Elements Air accurately recreates the distinctive square wave clipping and octave harmonics of one of history's most desirable dirt boxes, the Super Fuzz.

The original Super Fuzz was created by Shin-Ei, but saw later incarnations under brands such as Apollo, Shaftesbury, JAX, Tiesco, Memphis, and most famously, Univox.

Notes: A unique concept in booster design, the DB10 features two completely independent boost circuits in a single compact housing.

The Clean (Left) channel offers up to +20 dB of clean boost with a completely flat frequency response.

The Vintage (Right) channel is Maxon's take on the classic Treble Booster circuit. It offers up to +20 dB of boost, but with a subtle high-frequency roll-off that increases as the Level is turned towards maximum.

Each circuit has its own input and output jacks, allowing them to be cascaded into one another in any order. Place an overdrive or distortion in-between the channels for additional tonal options - super-saturated overdrive that can then be level-boosted for solos, etc.

TECH TALK:
When re-designing the CP-9, Maxon looked at every type of compressor on the market and came to one conclusion - standard-grade components and traditional guitar compressor designs simply would not do.

The CP-9 Pro+ runs off of a dual power supply (converted from a single 9V+) giving the pedal twice the headroom and ability to handle compressing/expanding a signal without clipping.

The pedal starts by splitting the input signal into 2 circuits - control and effected. The control stream makes its way into a THAT2252 chip, a precision RMS level detector (by the "THAT Corporation," a Silicon Valley manufacturer of high-end precision analog chips) which measures the input signal and provides a precise trigger signal for the VCA.

After the RMS chip we head into a series of 4 Op Amps that are used to control the Threshold, Shape, and Gain of the trigger signal. The affected trigger signal is then routed into a THAT2150 VCA which follows the unity gain amplifier in the effected circuit.

The THAT2150 is a Voltage Controlled Amplifier based on the "Blackmer Gain Cell" developed by David Blackmer, the founder of DBX - This VCA structure is the granddaddy of them all and was instrumental in the early DBX designs. After the 2150 VCA the signal is amplified again by another Op Amp and then out through the true bypass switch.

The CP-9 Pro+ features Mechanical True Bypass switching using a Fujisoku 4PDT switch.

The Nine Series Overdrive Pro+ takes Maxon's classic OD-9 circuit and serves it up with two side orders of Whoop-Ass in the form of 9/18 volt operation and a Mid Boost switch.

TECH TALK:

The OD-9 Pro+ starts with a jFET buffer which simultaneously offers high input impedance and low impedance into the rest of the pedal - this helps to preserve high-end clarity in the signal.

The first tone stage is the Mid Boost feature: A switchable Op Amp with clipping diodes in the feedback loop. When this stage is not in the signal path the pedal behaves like a standard OD9. With this stage in the path it adds subtle gain and definition to the sound, similar to a cascading gain stage.

From here it's on to the standard OD-9 circuitry: A clipping Op Amp with diodes in the feedback loop that clip the signal gradually as well as a high pass filter that keep the low frequencies from being distorted as much as high. Next there comes a passive LP filter and then an active tone stage. After the tone stage it's through the Volume pot, an Op Amp boost stage which bumps the signal 3X and then sends it to the output.

The Pro+ also utilizes an NJM2374A voltage conversion chip that changes the 9V power input into 9V+ and 9V-, increasing the headroom of the Op Amps (9V to 18V swing) and giving a bigger, chunkier sound to the overdrive.

The OD-9 Pro+ features Mechanical True Bypass switching via a Fujisoku 4PDT switch - Input is switched to ground when bypassed.

Notes: In 1977 Maxon released their first effect pedal - the OD880 Overdrive/Soft Distortion - and the world would never be the same.

Employing a passive distortion circuit based around the 741 Op Amp (also used in the popular DOD 250), the OD880 was coveted for its warm and natural overdrive tone. The 880 was perfect for use as a transparent booster to take a tube-amp over the edge, offering singing blues tones unrivaled by other boxes.

Japanese guitar legend Char made the OD880 famous as his booster-of-choice, causing original versions to skyrocket into the $600 range on the vintage market.

In the early 90's Maxon reissued a limited edition run of the OD880. Yet with no distribution outside of Japan, this model went largely unnoticed by the rest of the world, leaving its amazing tone a secret to all save the discerning collector.

Now Maxon has once again resurrected the OD880 in the form of the OSD-9 Overdrive/Soft Distortion.

The OSD-9 offers a warm, open-sounding overdrive with a mild high-end roll off. It reacts smoothly to input level changes, offering a highly interactive response to player dynamics. Perfect as a stand-alone dirt box or for pushing an amp, the OSD-9 can also be stacked with other OD's to add clarity and character to their tone.

The OSD offers up all these classic sounds in Maxon's indestructible, industry standard 9-Series chassis. Modern-day utility features such as mechanical true bypass switching and a voltage regulator have also been added to provide smooth, consistent performance.

Over 30 years after the original OD880 was released, the OSD-9 promises to bestow the legendary tones of its predecessor upon a new generation of discerning players - are you ready?

TECH TALK:
The OSD-9 signal path starts with a 2SK246 jFET buffer which provides high input impedance and low output impedance into the 1st Op Amp - a UA741CP. The UA741CP is a vintage style 741 single Op Amp with superior resistance to latching up (distorting in a non-musical way) - it is not as "precise" as modern IC's, giving it a more vintage, warmer, "analog-ish" response.

This 1st Op Amp is set up to provide a 20 to 120x gain in signal.

After the 1st Op Amp we have a pair of diodes to ground, just like classic boxes such as the MXR Distortion+, Pro Co Rat and Boss DS-1. From here it's into another UA741CP with an amplification factor of 10 to boost the signal back to a high enough level to drive the input of an amplifier if necessary - a feature that the Distortion+ and DS-1 do not offer.

From here the signal is routed to a 4558 Op Amp unity gain amplifier, a volume control voltage divider, and then another unity gain 4558 to provide a low impedance output.

Starting with a circuit loosely based on the classic 808 architecture, the ST-9 adds a Mid Enhance knob to control the amount of midrange boost. This knob functions similarly to an amp's presence control, boosting perceived volume and gain as it's turned up.

You may be wondering why an 808-style pedal would need more presence - introducing the ST-9's Low Boost switch.

The Low Boost switch is the ST-9's secret weapon - This unassuming switch completely changes the character of the pedal, adding beefy low end and increased saturation via a LP filter and an alternate set of clipping diodes.

If this wasn't enough, the ST-9 also offers 9- or 18-volt operation via an internal charge pump. Run at 9 for the classic 808 sound and feel or switch to 18 for increased headroom, improved dynamics, and a bigger, chunkier tone to the overdrive.

From bluesy overdrive to diabolical dirt box, the ST-9 is a devilishly diverse pedal that can punish a clean amp or turn a dirty amp into a wall of doom.

The OD808 re-imagined with increased output level, additional saturation and a more diverse palette of tonal options.

TECH TALK:
Input signal goes to a 2SK246 jFET buffer that provides a high input impedance and low output impedance into the 1st Op Amp, a NJM (JRC) 4558D. This 1st 4558 is set up as a tweakable mid boost, with a potentiometer controlling the gain of the boost. The signal goes from the mid boost Op Amp to the second clipping Op Amp, which is set up for a 10 to 110x gain with switchable sets of diodes in the feedback loop and a switchable capacitor to boost bass.

After the clipping Op Amp the signal is routed to an 808-style tone control and unity gain amplifier, after which the signal is passed through a volume potentiometer, another unity gain amplifier (to provide low output impedance) and then the true bypass switch. The use of these unity gain amplifiers helps to preserve high end in the signal which can be lost when passing through the volume control.

Notes: Over the past 10 years Maxon effects have become key ingredients in the guitar rigs of countless metal bands. The irony here (pun intended) is that Maxon has never offered a pedal tailored to the needs of the metal guitarist - until now.

Introducing the Maxon SM-9 Pro+ Super Metal - specifically designed for high-gain distortion tones, the SM-9's flexible saturation circuit can churn out everything from classic NWOBHM crunch through to the throaty chunk of today's drop-tuned metal extremes.

Developing such a pedal was no easy task, and the Pro+ was on the drawing board for years before Maxon felt it was ready for release. Several unique "tricks" were incorporated into its design to create a pedal that is as versatile as it is merciless.

Forgoing the use of conventional tone controls, the SM-9 instead features Scoop and Edge knobs to dial in the riffage.

The Scoop control is a mid-band elimination filter with a range from 200 Hz - 2 KHz. This control adjusts the frequency range where the pedal's midrange cut is centered.

Once the amount of mid scoop is determined, any high-end loss can be dialed back in using the Edge control - a Hi-cut shelving filter continuously variable between 2-15 kHz.

These two controls are highly interactive and work much like a parametric equalizer - Adjusting both knobs simultaneously allows the user to find the perfect mix of brutality and clarity.

The SM-9's Gain control adjusts the degree of saturation the pedal provides. This control is actually a dual-ganged pot that increases the amount of distortion while simultaneously boosting the upper midrange band up to 20 dB at 1 kHz.

By boosting and cutting specific frequency bands in relation to Gain, the SM-9's controls allow the user to sculpt brutal, beefy guitar tones that retain note clarity and definition.

The Pro+ also offers switchable 9- or 18-volt operation. In Classic mode, the SM-9 runs at the incoming 9 volts DC, greatly extending battery life. Switching to stabilized 18-volt operation increases headroom, frequency range, and dynamic response of the pedal.

Using the SM-9's controls and voltage options, an almost unlimited variety of monstrous high-gain tones can be dialed in. Whether you're a full-time metal maniac or just need the occasional "nuclear blast" without the bulk or volume of a full stack, the Maxon SM-9 Pro + Super Metal will deliver the goods.

Notes: Designed in homage to classic 70's distortion modulators such as the Flying Pan and Jetlyzer (both of which Maxon designed and built for Ibanez), the VJR-9 Vintage Jet Riser creates a Doppler jet effect so realistic you can almost feel the wind in your hair.

Rather than sticking with the old-school Jet design of phase shifter into distortion, the VJR-9 features an analog Bucket-Brigade Flanger as the modulation source to add a more realistic depth of field to the effect. Speed and Width controls allow adjustment of the flanging from slow takeoff to sonic boom.

In similar fashion, Maxon has forgone the use of a distortion circuit in favor of a voltage-controlled white noise generator to more accurately simulate the sound of a jet in flight. Featuring a combination of VCA and VCF circuits, the VJR-9's Jet effect reacts to playing dynamics within a range preset by the Sensitivity, Range and Jet controls.

These two circuits can be used separately or in combination to create a wide variety of effects from subtle to extreme - classic chorus and flanging; tremolo-like auto-wah; massive sky-is-falling Jet sweeps; bizarre and other-worldly metallic tones bordering on ring-modulation - all these and more are possible with the VJR-9.

The VJR-9 also features a jack to connect an external switch (bypass or momentary) for the Jet function, allowing the user to add the effect in against the Flange when desired to accentuate certain note, phrases, or song sections.

The VJR-9's internal voltage-doubling circuitry provides maximum headroom to eliminate input distortion. The higher operating voltage also allows it to be used in an FX loop in order to place the effect post-gain.

The VOP-9 was designed with the seasoned guitarist in mind, yet it can be a great addition to any player's rig.

TECH TALK:
The VOP circuit is basically a hot-rodded 808 with a few special tricks. After a JFET input buffer, the signal is sent a dual-gang Drive pot where it is split between a clean gain stage and the overdrive stage. As the Drive knob is turned up, more signal is sent to the overdrive stage while the drive of this stage is also turned up. If the Drive knob is turned down, more signal is sent to the clean gain stage and the drive of the overdrive stage is turned down. At 12 o'clock on the Drive knob, signal is split 50/50 clean/overdriven.

The VOP-9 features a standard 808-style tone control. However, the entire pedal is running at 18 volts via an internal voltage doubler that bumps up the clean headroom and provides greater output and a fuller frequency response than the typical 808 circuit - in other words, no midrange spike!

Even though the VOP circuit is running at 18 volts, it powers up off standard 9 VDC via battery or a standard external power adaptor.

The Maxon OD-9 circuit has achieved a legendary status among tone connoisseurs as the ultimate tool for driving a tube amp. Yet sometimes you need that little "something extra," and the TOD-9 provides this missing ingredient in spades.

The TOD features a mil-spec 5703WB JAN Raytheon sub-miniature vacuum tube complete with its own separate Gain control (Tube knob). This tube stage is positioned at the front of the audio path, driving the OD-9 circuit.

With the Tube knob at zero, the TOD sounds exactly like an OD-9. Engage this control and experience the unmistakable magic of tube tone - a big, FAT, natural-sounding bottom end and the characteristic tube "sag" that makes lead lines sing.

TECH TALK:
The OOD-9 signal path starts with a 2SK246 jFET buffer which provides a high input impedance and low output impedance into the 1st Op Amp - a NJM (JRC) 4558. This 1st Op Amp is set up to provide a 20 to 120x gain in signal.

After the 1st Op Amp we have a pair of diodes to ground, just like classic boxes such as the MXR Distortion+, Pro Co Rat and Boss DS-1. From here it's into another NJM4558 with an amplification factor of 10 to boost the signal back to a high enough level to drive the input of an amplifier if necessary - a feature that the Dist+ and DS-1 do not offer.

From here the signal is routed to a 4558 Op Amp unity gain amplifier, a volume control voltage divider, and then another unity gain 4558 to provide a low impedance output.

The OOD-9 uses a NJM2374A Voltage converter to stabilize the operating voltage at 9 VDC regardless of the voltage level coming off the battery, providing a smoother, more consistent operation and tonality.

The OOD-9 features Mechanical True Bypass switching via a Fujisoku 4PDT switch - the input of circuit is switched to ground when bypassed.

NOTE ON POWERING THE OOD-9 - this pedal's voltage regulator IC requires a high inrush current of approximately 2000 mA upon startup. When using with a Power Brick such as the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+, this pedal should be connected to a high current power jack when possible.

If it is not possible to connect to a high current jack, you can power the OOD-9 by leaving a battery in the pedal. The SD-9 provides a smooth distortion that covers a wide range of Gain levels from mild overdrive through pseudo-fuzz. TECH TALK:
Input signal goes through a simple High-Pass filter into a transistor that's set up as an emitter/follower (high input impedance - low output impedance). After this it's into an Op Amp stage designed to give a gain range of 67 to 567and a Low-Pass Filter with a corner frequency of approximately 1540 Hz.

From here it's on to a set of opposing-direction diodes to ground and a tone control that is reminiscent of the Boss DS-1 (kind of a Big Muff dual High and Low cut - ending up with a mid scoop that has a high frequency limiting resistor with corner frequencies of 867Hz and 234Hz respectively).

The SD-9's dual diodes to ground give a crunchier, chewier distortion than the popular 808-style "diodes in feedback loop" configuration. Likewise, the SD-9's mid scoop is practically the antithesis of the 808's infamous mid hump.

After the tone control section it's through to a volume control and into another E/F transistor to provide a low impedance output and then on to the true bypass switch.
