  3. D.Tiffany - "Sun Trip" (7:54)
  4. Henry Hyde - "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim" (6:18)
Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Emotinium '22
Cat: ERS 053. Rel: 13 Jun 22
  1. Emotinium (Rave '22) (7:27)
  2. Emotinium (Ambient dub) (7:55)
  3. Emotinium (original demo mix) (20:00)
Review: Arriving some five years after the original 12" created a dance-floor paradigm shift, Roy Of The Ravers returns to Emotinium with an EP of updated retakes, complete with the previously unheard original demo mix in all its twenty minute glory. Emotinium first appeared on the '2 Late 4 Love' cassette in 2015, and caused a storm as part of a 4 track EP with the same name a year later. The track was played as a festival opener by the likes of Bicep and in Sameheads' Berlin basement parties - becoming a must-have that continues as today's second-hand prices testify.

A sense that the dreamy electro meets 303 melodics of the original could be brought up to (breaks) speed held in Roy's mind since creation, so Rave '22 is presented for hearts, minds and feet as we step(pers) out into an updated world. Cut, looped, and reformed, a braindance for millenniums.

This is accompanied by an Ambient Dub for the afters. Highlighting the TB-303's finest again, Roy's garden of dreams flies high, as artificial intelligence finally becomes reality. To close, the long-form Demo awaits. One for completists maybe but in letting the full 20 minutes play you can be drawn in or let go and drift as Tadao Kikumoto's masterwork is presented with respect. Arigato!

Review: As you can probably work out form the title, Wavejumpers is an electro project that is related to the work of James Stinson and Gerald Donald's Drexciya outfit. It features former Aquanauts man Tyree Stinson and plenty of aqueous synth lines and watery motifs that take you deep into an oceanic world. Accompanying text says "Oaths were made, plans and maps drawn up. The Spawn has escaped. Wavejumpers spotted off the coast of Scotland. Can you decode The Sound that lurks in the fog?" which adds to the mystery, while the beats themselves are as good as electro gets.

Memory Motions EP
Cat: TR 034. Rel: 30 May 22
  1. The Giver (9:54)
  2. Memory Motions (7:38)
  3. Tuned (5:30)
Review: Mystical dreamweaver Edward has previously brought out some of his classiest club-tooled gear for Trelik, with 2018's Rumours EP being a particular highlight in his glittering career in minimal. Breaking a protracted silence for Baby Ford's label, this new three-tracker once more takes us into the unique atmospheric zone Edward occupies with his productions. 'The Giver' has an unnerving, desolate quality but it's also rock-solid in the rhythm department, with subtle threads of warmth to balance out the eeriness. 'Memory Motions' is a spicier cut with a pronounced house jack to propel a tense set of sonic motifs, with a special mention to the wobbly organ-like chord line. 'Tuned' is the most upfront of all the tracks, using some processed piano hooks and a full compliment of nagging, funkified ingredients to make a certified, if left-of-centre, party starter.

This release appears on the KMA60 Rezpektiva label in the wake of releases from Denia and Cosmic Underground, and it easily fits into the label's interests around 90s-influenced club sounds. This is high class and hi-tech electronic music that will make your head, heart and soul dance as it joins the dots between the past, present and future. 'Sol' is bright, electric techno with silvery synths layered up to perfection. 'Sol' (La Luz) is a subtle tweak then 'Decenso' is a lush cosmic workout with smeared synths and ticking, polished-metal drums before closer MTO explores a bouncy house vibe that will uplift any club room.

Review: After kicking off with a release from Triform in 2020, the Faciendo label is back in action with a drop from Matthias. The Berlin based producer has been previously spotted on CABARET, Art of Dark and his own Superluminal, honing a springy techno sound which plays around with bold synth motifs and an overall sense of fun. On this new EP we're treated to plenty of taut drum machine rhythms and striking compositional passages - especially the epic, brooding EP closer 'Omega Moon'. Striking a tone somewhere near the early days of Detroit techno and the attendant trancey sound which emerged in Frankfurt, Matthias has the chops you want in a classically-styled modern techno drop.

Review: Gene On Earth has been quietly slipping out some serious quality for those who like their tech house bleepy and bumping. Releasing everything himself via Limousine Dream, he's sculpted his own sound world with distinctive flair which now manifests on his second album, Time On The Vine. There's an abundance of trippy flourishes throughout the record, but first and foremost this is a selection of club-ready gear which will almost certainly appeal to DJs seeking proper heads-down fare which doesn't skimp on personality.

Review: Underground Resistance is one of the last true and proper connections to the original techno scene that we have left. While many of the early pioneers have sold out, released the same old tricks or become heritage acts, this label and collective never quits looking forwards. Spoken-word artist Mike Ellison is behind this EP, which is one of three the label has out in March, including a remastered reissue of the 2004 single 'Windchime' by Perception and Mike Banks. This is warm, soulful house meets techno with pensive lyrics and plenty of dynamite rhythms for the dance floor. It comes in various different and equally effective mixes.

At Les (Christian Smith remixes) (reissue)
  1. At Les (Christian Smith's Tronic Treatment remix)
  2. At Les (Christian Smith's Hypnotica remix)
Review: 'At Les' is one of Carl Craig's most beloved productions: a gorgeously dreamy chunk of Innerzone Orchestra style tech-jazz that first surfaced - on a now in-demand compilation - 25 years ago. Craig has revisited it several times since, but it's Christian Smith's 2010 reworks - reissued on this 12" for the first time since - that are arguably the most peak-time ready and dancefloor-centric. On the A-side 'Tronic Treatment' version Smith layers the track's iconic synthesizer motif - heart-achingly poignant and drenched in delay - and deep, spacey chords over deep, rumbling sub-bass and a crunchy deep house beat. Smith ups the tempo and intensity on the arguably even better 'Hypnotica Mix', which is closer in tone to pure Motor City techno and features a genuinely spellbinding breakdown.

Review: Following the release of last year's excellent The Sound of Limo (TSOL) compilation, Gene on Earth's Limousine Dream label has started issuing EPs under the TSOL banner. Here, Salt Mines co-founder and sometime Craigie Knowes and Lost Palms contributor Rudolf C delivers the third volume in the series, aiming to impress as much as the previous instalments from Sweely and James Andrew. He makes a solid start via the bleeping, thickset, analogue-rich techno hypnotism of '504 Open Space', before opting for a more percussive, intoxicating and sub-heavy sound on 'Totally Refracted'. Over on side B, 'Claymine' sits somewhere between deep techno and heady European tech-house, while 'Mind User' is glitchy, bass-heavy, off-kilter and pleasingly druggy.

" I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain. One always finds one's burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night-filled mountain, in itself, forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Review: Half Ukrainian, half Australian artist Tim Jackiw has been doing his thing since the late 90s, plying a strain of deep, melodic tech house which transcends the ebb and flow of trends, sounding as fresh now as it did when he launched Offworld back in 1997. While the label was only a cult concern back then, in the last couple of years Jackiw has been slipping out a steady stream of releases, with the latest being this utterly classy light beam of synth-rich club gear for dreamy dancefloors. 'Full Moon' is a redolent with misty pads and monosynth warmth, while 'Shade (Long Mix)' strikes a note somewhere in the region of B12 et al. Cooling down after the beat-driven business, 'Sunset Over Saturn' completes the set in a blissful haze of ambient techno soul.

Originally released on Klang Elektronik and now reissued by Jelinek's own Faitiche label, Textstar is a masterpiece of glitchy sample-based electronics with a subtle, implied funk. In some ways the sound has dated - it's very much of the late 90s-early 00s era it was first crafted in. But it's a sound that still engrosses and intrigues, reveling in microscopic detail and subdued moods while retaining a groove that comes through the best on eternally magnificent cut 'Beautone'.

It's not absolutely certain on the origins of this new track 'Phoenix', but it appears like a bolt from the blue on Detroit Dancer in the wake of releases from Jared Wilson, Gari Romalis, Dan Curtin and Orlando Voorn amongs others. It's a stunning piece with the kind of elevated musical patterns you can readily associate with Beltran's more techno focused works, and it comes backed up with remixes from Strykes and ERP who take the track in distinct but still resolutely machine powered directions.

Review: Echocord is one of the strongest forces in the dub techno scene, and in 20 years they've remained true to their creative vision. As with all the best of the genre, there's a timeless quality to this 20th anniversary release, which brings in some of the label's most trusted hands to fashion a compilation which speaks to the evergreen quality of the dub techno scene. There are some fresher turns from Babe Roots & Another Channel, while Mathias Kaden dons his Mathimidori alias, but diehard label fans will be looking to the likes of Deadbeat, Mikkel Metal and Quantec for that sublime, immersive Echocord experience.

Review: Last year Woody McBride's Minnesota label Sounds. reissued the Lovers EP, a 12" he originally released back in 1996 under his Modal alias. Now that release gets a bumper double pack of remixes, leading in with some Mariana trench depth charge gear from Roy Davis and DJ Skull. The Terry Mullan mix is a springy, 909 techno workout, while the Boom Box mix takes a lighter, drum machine jazz approach. There are so many old-school heroes involved here - Hyperactive, DJ Slip, Mystic Bill - but then what else would you expect from someone as invested in the scene and community as Woody McBride?

Review: Lo-fi and industrial techno specialist Silent Servant last appeared on L.I.E.S back in 2016, via a typically fuzzy and forthright EP that joined the dots between bleak techno and EBM. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to Optimistic Decay, which sees him channel the floor-friendly industrial funk of Cabaret Voltaire. This is particularly evident on A-side 'Cyber Luminescence', where Cabs' vocalist Stephen Mallinder adds his half-spoken, half-sung vocals to a track that his and Richard H Kirk's band could have made circa 1981. Elsewhere, 'Raw Optics' is a surging, EBM-influenced throb-job, while 'Solitude Illuminated' is a deep and drowsy mid-tempo chugger blessed with bittersweet synth sounds and bubbly bass.

Review: Gargantuan French producer Arnaud Rebotini made his own response to the lockdown life through 2020 with a series of singles under the banner This Is A Quarantine. The eight volumes took in original material and attendant remixes from an all-star cast, and now they've been gathered together and pressed to wax. As you would expect from the synth-toting titan of Blackstrobe, this is maximal music to sink your teeth into and the remix cast more than steps up to that. The Hacker, Alessandro Adriani, VTSS, Cardopusher, Kittin - there's no shortage of heavy hitters spread across this mammoth four-disc box set of electro-techno excellence.

Review: Answer Code Request is a titanic name in the realm of breaks, so it'll come as a surprise to learn that this is his first EP in 6 years. True to its name, though, it really does 'shatter' all prior preconceptions and paradigms to do with what we thought his music was. Returning to Delsin, his breaks are subtly intoned with enough pump, transient and fuzz to rival that of Overmono's, while still nailing a mood of liminal nostalgia that refuses to give into too-bangery territory. Also watch out for 'CRS 21', the curveball techno track sure to set industrial tunnels and dancefloors alight.

Review: Woody McBride's Sounds label continues to dive back in the archives and revive some absolute gold standard techno for modern diggers. This collab effort between McBride (in his DJ ESP guise) and DJ Skull originally came out in 1995, and it still sounds fierce to this day. 'The Drive' is a stripped down tool with all the right chops to tweak out a locked-in raver, but 'G-Rated' is the real gem on the record. In a blistering hailstorm of 303 squelch you get a definitive example of acid techno at its finest. 'The Power' might well find relevance in the present day trance-techno scene thanks to its unsettling leads and relentless forwards thrust.

Famously, this alias had to be put to sleep after George Lucas's lawyers found out about it after one of his releases on Clear back in the day, so he renamed himself Rude Ass Tinker - an anagram the original alias. But now it is back out of retirement for this collection on Further Electronix of all the recent EPs he has released. The tracks are built on brilliantly squelchy electro funk, cosmic techno, brain dance melodies abound and the whole thing comes from a world controlled by AI and robots, but never loses sight of the dancefloor.

With his distinctive and intricate sonic palette, Laubner extracts from his hardware different musical colors and shapes to produce singular atmospheres. Opening up the EP is Fly Fly, an epic 11 min minimal house trip full of tension and excitement, followed by Eargrind, an eerie, laid back Detroit leaning ballad. On the flip is Light Up, a spaced out, playful and bittersweet number that will revitalize any hazy after-hours dancefloor. Closing up the EP is Unlike Dislike, a quirky, jacking and mischievous techno workout for the packed club. Review: Back in 2020, hip-hop, breaks and electro stalwart Freddy Fresh decided to turn his hand to vintage-sounding house and techno, self-releasing a set of tracks called The Harvest online. Rawax were impressed, with the popular label deciding to put the pick of the cuts out on vinyl. Title track 'The Harvest' sets the tone, with the veteran producer wrapping a house-tempo, post-electro groove in sustained organ chords, spacey synths and bubbly electronic melodies. 'House-Spanner' sees him doff a cap to The Middle of Nowhere-era Orbital (seriously, it's very reminiscent of the Hartnoll brothers' late '90s output), while 'Misunderstood' is a woozy, delay-laden chunk of early morning U.S deep house. Elsewhere, the deep house dreaminess continues on the interestingly swung 'Twain', and clonking, TB-303 speckled 'Horlywagon'.

Review: Montreal's Maara made a strong impression with her early appearance on Naff, and now she pops up on German label Radiant Love to present more of her trippy, trance-tickled techno. This is guaranteed to go down a storm in the wiggy corner of contemporary club music, with 'Goddess Within (Give It To Me Daddy)' leaning heavy on the low end and letting the top line ripple and ping for maximum psychedelic escape. 'Mommy's In Trouble' is a more experimental excursion with angular rhythms and unsettling sounds woven throughout - one to thoroughly spook out the dance. 'Plum Plum Paradise' flips the script with some positively lovely downtempo new age gear, and then 'Lezzies In A Jacuzzi' rounds the record off in a steam room of dancefloor sensuality which should get everyone lithe and live at the afters.

Review: While Floorplan's line-up now also contains his daughter, Lyric Hood, for years the project was a solo alias of Detroit techno maestro Robert Hood. This two-tracker dates from that period, with both cuts originally appearing on M-Plant sub-label Duet way back in 2002. Two decades on, both still sound fresh and are excellent examples of Hood's full-bodied but minimalistic approach to Motor City techno. 'Shop' sees him layer looped organ notes, freestyle, high-register synth solos and angular electronics over a driving, locked-in techno beat, while 'Learn' is deeper and more hypnotic with plenty of energy-building TR-909 drum machine fills, psychedelic acid tweaks and faintly foreboding electronic riffs.
