Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Reprise (Noha Reprize edit)
Count On It (Noha Count On Me remix)
Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Delusional Clock
Emotionally Turbulent
Abyss
Review: Only the most delicate of deep house sensibilities is explored on this latest shared exquisite from Forest Witches and Sun Choi & Sons, both hailing from South Korea. Themed after the following short story - "long ago there were two enchantresses who journeyed into the centre of the forest, taking the left-hand path into darkness" - 'Duality' is a spiritually dubious yet no less enchanting hidden-forested mien; a celebration of roads less travelled, we could easily be led to believe that some magical ampelologic arcanum lies hidden behind these jammy, dubby house skitterers. Our favourite among the bunch has to be the shifty, smoked-out pressure valve known as 'Delusional Clock', and the indeed emotionally turbulent 'Emotionally Turbulent'.

Review: Emotional Response returns with a second volume of its All Trades compilation which is named after its own NTS show. It is just as vast both in terms of style but also the eras it spans with a mix of dub, new wave, slow motion electronics and plenty in between. Tolouse Low Trax kicks off with the filthy dirty and seriously heavy dub glitch of 'Ossia' to provide an early highlight before the likes of Al Wootton get percussive and tribal with 'Altai' and HLM38 channels some African Head Charge on another devastating dub cut. Later on, London's Good Block brings a little more light and sunshine with their lovely 'Strong Relax.'

Why Did I Love My Wife
Nordhorn
Frank & Hennes
Review: Way back in 2002, in the midst of his rise to global recognition, Ricardo Villalobos delivered a one-off EP for Linear as Termiten - though at the time his involvement was not widely known. It has become something of a sought-after minimal techno classic, with copies of the original 12-inch changing hands for serious sums - hence this Rawax reissue. It remains a fine record. A-side 'Why Did I Love My Wife' is Villalobos at his most propulsive - the kick-drum is pretty sturdy - while still reliably trippy, out-there and intoxicated. 'Nordhorn', a deeper affair in which melancholic melodies seemingly hang in the air over a typically wonky and loose-limbed drum track, is also superb, while 'Frank & Hennes' is a lolloping dab of downtempo psychedelia featuring samples from a heady old folk-rock jam.

Review: The Future Sound Of Sardinia follow hot on the heels of London, fixing yet one more cog to their prospective time machine with a new V/A compilation. 'Centuconcas' welcomes one contribution each from Claudio PRC, Agi Thoriu, Andrea Ferlin, and Jarpp. Each artist is caught exercising a deeper-into-their-own-pysches dub flavour than usual; PRC's sonic epigraph 'Uraki' is an impressive demonstration, unconsciously driving its sticky chording ricochets unto semi-conscious ears; Thoriu's 'Aressi' follows up with a neat fusion, yielding something between ambient future garage and a deep tribal entrainment; Ferlin's 'Hydra' is far more muted and operational in mood, veering more on lo-fi tech; and to close, Jarpp summons his inner MPC for 'Su Passu Turrau', taking its namesake from a traditional Italian line dance (but in actuality, the track sounds like nothing of the sort, unless we entertain the idea that this is the soundtrack to a line dance beamed in from the future...)

What Happened?
Review: Abe Duque's What Happened? EP, originally released in 2004, remains a timeless gem that played a pivotal role in igniting the resurgence of interest in acid house and jackin' styles. With expertly crafted homages to legendary tracks like Adonis's 'No Way Back,' Duque injects a modern twist by adding infectious party vocals, resulting in an irresistible formula that set dance floors ablaze then and continues to do so now. The EP's title track, 'What Happened?' epitomizes the essence of this revival, with its pulsating beats and hypnotic acid lines that transport listeners to the heart of the underground rave scene. On the flip side, 'Disco Nights' delivers funky grooves that evoke the spirit of classic disco, while 'Acid' pays homage to the genre's origins with its infectious acid house vibes. What else can you say? A stone cold classic.

Review: Bristol's cultured Innate label is back with a first outing of the year and it returns to their various artists format with a mix of talents all making their mark. UK veteran Tom Churchill opens up with 'Unknown Unknowns (Edit)', which brings plenty of fuzzy and lo-fi aesthetic to jacked up drums and spaced-out pads. Rai Scott then shows her class with 'Suasion' that sinks down deep into immersive drums and is subtly lit up with simmering strings. Innate co-founders Owain K and Gilbert then hook-up under their brand new alias Curved Space and showcase their love of electro with 'Reverie,' a dreamy cut that glows with nice celestial melodies and will have dance floors in a zoned-out state. Last of all it's Lisbon mainstay Jorge Caiado who debuts with the chord-laced 'Floating Without Lifting,' a sophisticated and serene jazz-techno cut that takes you to the stars.

Review: Ghost Dubs shares his first album, Damaged, for The Bug’s Pressure label; the artist also known as Michael Fiedler and Jah Schulz here follows up two prior experimental dub LPs put out via his ‘Dub Over Science’ series, the title of which tells you all there is to know about his approach to music production. Dub was never an entirely empirical process: though the archetypal dubbing engineer was historically often deemed just that - an “engineer” - this terminology is ironic since intuition, or “vibesmanship”, is also essential to the craft. Bringing twelve zygomatic arse-zappers to our left and right canals (and, in the bass region, to our bodies), Ghost Dubs homages the blueprint drafted by the infamous Chain Reaction label, whose pioneering works laid the ground for all low-reg, factoryscape experimental dub records to follow. Best of this bunch are the least rhythmically deadlocked, ‘Soul Craft’ standing out in its use of freeform shark-caged resonances, and ‘True To Life’ going steady but confidently on the triplets and alien gurgles.

Review: Baby Ford is back being reissued again and we couldn't be happier about it. Few have ever matched the matter levels he achieved when it comes to deep minimal and tech house fusions. This latest on his own Trelik takes the form of three classic cuts from two much sought-after EPs - Built In and All That Nothing. The title cut is a shimmering and sublime fusion of rubbing low ends and icy hi-hats. 'All That Nothing' then picks up the pace with more dub influences and swaying drums and 'Plaza' has a tech house edge that makes for more driving grooves.

'JS-07' rolls out with deep, pillow drums and well buried sub bass that slowly sweeps you up and locks you into a state of hypnosis. 'JS-07R' on the flip side is run through with slightly more warmth and light, like beams of sun piercing the surface of an ocean and catching microscopic organisms floating on the sea bed. It's a heady sound full of soul.

Italians Do It Better man Johnny Jewel kicks off with some sultry sax-laced sounds, David Lynch's musical partner Dean Hurley crushes on shimmering pads and Pye Corner Audio bring a little intergalactic tension. Elsewhere there are sugary synths from Legowelt, suspensory pads from TM Solver and plenty more to help you escape to another dimension. Add to that the fact it arrives on a random variety of different vinyl colours and comes with a download code, and you've got rather a nice package.

Review: Studio. Workstation. Atelier. Action stations. The works. Such are the many alternate words for 'studio', as in 'work room'; the word also makes up the title of the latest Monolake record. Yet the word also has associations not just of an objective place, but also of an objective headspace: one can 'be in the studio' simply if one is engaged in contemplative thought, contemplating objects of study, which could, in theory, also be studios; a kind of never-ending recursive dance, to say very little to begin with. Monolake's new techno album knows this as much. The artist reveals that "most of the tracks on this album got revised countless times, and then even more", suggesting a potentially boundless obsession; one could zoom and zoom ever-further into the painting (or track, or trees) yet not lose sight of the wood. From the opening synth chants and loomings-over of 'The Elders Disagree', which recalls mixed feelings of awe at the sage wisdom of one's ancestors, and fear of their disapproval - to the closing tonal slides and tremolos of 'Eclipse', this is a carefully, wonderfully crafted record, one that to be studied with fervour, yet not infinitely; the interpretive buck has to stop somewhere.

Review: Susumu Yokota's venerated 1994 classic Acid Mt. Fuji is reissued in expanded, deluxe fashion, as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the label that originally released it. Japan's Musicmine - specifically its electronic subsidiary Sublime - released the album on June 29, 1994, simultaneously with Ken Ishii's Reference To Difference, as their inaugural joint offering. Tantamount to a fusion of ambient acid/rave - then still nascent in Japan - with new age music, Susumo Yokota was likely the best man for the job at the time. With his first album, The Frankfurt-Tokyo Connection, he'd not yet established his electro-pastoralist style, yet it was Acid Mt. Fuji that divined the latter-day emotes of Sakura, a new age so adroitly fused with electronica yet emulable by few. Though the later years of Yokota's life have been couched in a good deal of privacy and mystery, Acid Mt. Fuji certainly betrays a fittingly shrewd and introspective character on the part of the artist, one that served him well. Its long, drawn-out nature soundscapes - tempered by the piquant sounds of modern synths like the TB-303, which animistically, pseudohallucinogenically blend with the animal sounds themselves - recall something like an alpine augur's waking dream.

The French label has taken a deep dive into his catalogue and picked a couple of genuine gems to reissue. Both tracks originally appeared on the same Rotation Records release way back in 2000. Review: It's reissue time for one of the most in demand records from the Trelik catalogue, featuring Baby Ford and Thomas Melchior under their Sunpeople alias. The flip side's opening track 'Check Your Buddah' is probably the best known of the four tracks here, with its spacious echoes, mantra-like voices and heads down beats, but there's plenty to be said for the other three. 'Lovers Eyes' is an equally dubby techno affair, but pinned down by sturdy, infectious beats, 'Sungods Wedding' is blessed with churning, warm bass action and just a smidge of cowbell and 'Make It Right' is properly hypnotic 3am gear that's a dream to mix and draws in the listener with its imperceptible builds and three note bleep magic. Worship the Sun!

Naila
CDV (feat Bruno Pronsato - remix)
Review: Kompakt describe contemporary progressive house producer Robag Wruhme as "not just a producer, but a storyteller"; we'd wholeheartedly agree, save for the fact that unlike writers - storytellers who, for the most part, have a message to send to the world, and put said message into words for us to decisively make some sense out of - Wruhme is more of a sensational, of whose narrative arc we can only get a sense. It's clear from 'Speicher 132' that Wruhme approaches the art of minimal progressive house as, well, exactly that: an art of careful, sparse, but nuanced living room furnishing, in which perhaps better a world might be imagined. 'Naila' and 'CDV' both bring a brill sense of movement to the otherwise firmly rooted-in-place genre that is house, working in many extra varnishings, textures and licks of paint.

The Trip: Enter The Black Hole (Japanese Edition)

Review: Jeff Mills' The Trip is an audacious exploration of musical landscapes that marries the unexpected with the familiar, creating a sonic journey that is as unpredictable as it is moving. The album, which evolved from a concept first introduced in 2009, comes alive with its 2023 live performance in Tokyo, showcasing Mills' skill in weaving together elements from different musical eras and styles. In tracks like 'Contradiction (Silent Shadow Mix),' snippets of a pad burst through the mix, underscoring the tension and release that characterize the album. Jun Togawa's vocals add a raw emotional layer, enhancing the dramatic interplay between fast-paced drumming and evocative melodies. Unsettling yet serene, The Trip encapsulates a dynamic range of emotions, from the unnerving rush of 'When Time Stops' to the robust rock guitar in 'Long Radio.' This album is not just a collection of tracks but a narrative of perpetual motion and change, reflecting the thrilling unpredictability of life itself and the wonder of experiencing moments anew.

Review: Border Patrol (Stu Adam) brings his talents to Rezpektiva, who gladly represent his first and only EP for the 29th edition of their EPs series. Originally recorded for Middlesboro's Tumblin' Records in the mid 90s and released only in small quantities, the EP displays a canny sense of variety in painting pictures of house music's many possible worlds. The hilariously named 'Mobius Trip' leads the way, trailblazing a fiery string of pitched-up synths and watery stabs in its wake; the more experimental of the bunch, 'D'ya Want Business', is our favourite, bringing pure lowpassed kicks, infectious two-tone electroclash-ish basslines, and what sound like computer keyboard and lasershot sound effects into one heady cyberspatial stew.

Review: Monolake's latest record is does a damn good job of convincing us of his obsessive tendencies. We wouldn't know it - not least since us end-listeners are so used to reaping the fetishistic products of artistic sweats - but Monolake himself has since let on that "most of the tracks on this album got revised countless times, and then even more". It's these revisions, iterations through time, to which we sadly must accept that we will never gain access. Even so, we can appreciate that the likes of 'Intermezzo', 'Global Transport' and 'Cute Little Aliens' are essentially the sum total of a nearly endless versioning practice, one that Monolake rightly, impertinently stands by, not to give ground to any outside injunction to streamline or 'agile' his craft. The album eventually became a formal meditation on the studio itself - "my shelter, I feel comfortable there, surrounded by wonderful inspiring machines. A small cosy room where ideas emerge, mature, morph, and solidify into their final shape". Monolake goes on to admit his analytic, perfectionistic tendencies with statements like "all completely ripped apart and rearranged multiple times" and "repeatedly shift from one state to another until they become solid". And while the music remains thoroughly danceable, it's the tracks' toplines, their accoutrements, that are the most "fleshed-out" - they could rival a haruspex's auspice in their ability to find meaning in endless, visceral variety.

Review: The Hyperdrive label is back with a third outing which once again offers up some exciting and forward-thinking new artists. Anderson's 'Sweet Psylow' kicks off with some psychedelic synth loops over crisp tech house drums that hark back to the 90s prog heyday. HearThuG's 'Back To The Future' is a darker sound with whistles, snappy snares and eerie chords and Luis Malon & Seb G then combine for the bouncing techno rhythms and acid-laced pads of 'Extasis Nebular.' Last but not least, Jamie Leather's 'Strange Commodities' is a surging cosmic techno trip with dynamic drums and perc and majestic leads. This is another fine release from this young label.

Review: Dan Andrei is arguably one of the finest selectors of this generation and a master minimal producer who makes electronic music of the highest order. His latest outing sees him inaugurating his own brand-new label alongside Claudiu Stefan. Rainbow Hill is a platform for their more personal ideas and starts with four more of Andrei's brilliantly deft yet dramatic tracks. 'Numan's Touch' kicks off with rolling drums and bass and a fine eco-system of cosmic pads, twinkling keys and fizzing synths that are theatrical and involving. 'What Else?' then gets darker and more intense with heady loops and wispy pads, and again the ante is upped and the darkness pervades once more on the tense and taught dub-tech roller 'This Is What I See'. Last of all, 'Bluer Than Ever' floats above the floor with airy pads and radiant chords. A perfect 5am vibe.

Review: Just when you think you've heard the last of Covid in music, along comes this Covid 2020 EP from Yotsume Music label head Saki Hiroaki, indicating that it was written during those most weird and dark times, specifically in the city of Kurashiki. 'I Say' (part 2) is a seriously silky deep house with wispy and liquid chords rippling out to an infinite horizon as the persuasive drums get you into the groove. 'Improvisation' is a more crisp tech cut but is still unhurried and detailed with nice deft synth curlicues and the trio of escapist gems is completed with 'TRAP'. This one again sinks you into a pillowy and gentle groove with muted chords drifting up top like clouds.

Review: Italian producer Heinrich Dressel kicks off 2024 with a strong start, following up two initiatory releases on Italian label Bordelo A Parigi and Distrikt with a hat-trick for Serenity In Keos. Moving in a more muted, dark electro direction compared to the first EPs, Dressel's modus operandi aims at something in between a Drexciyan sonic ink emission and a former seafaring organism's slow territorialization; 'Land Under Siege' in particular sounds like a kind of warring Atlantean revenge, with its doomy watery harmonies descending on sonic landed terrains, conjuring images of a preliminary war-cry hollered before a full-throttle acid barrage.

Review: Someone might've once perhaps daubed on a wall, 'structures don't march in the street', but techno is protest music, and we'd bet that if this new V/A from Molecular was ghetto-blasted with enough fervour for a just cause, we'd be bound to see some protestant response. That said, six new 'structures' from Molecular Recordings - the first part of their new Structures series - come bowling our way; a worthy sextet of pressure-risers, to say the ut-least. Whether the likes of 'The Curve', 'Light Flare', or 'Iccha' are taken as purely real, empirically acoustic disturbances - or as the abstract, vaguely synaesthetic thought-forms that our brains are sure to make of them - these are surely motivative enough causes for concern, danceable or otherwise. We'll admit that structures don't always march in the street, but where they don't, they surely do corral people onto dancefloors. The energy's gotta go somewhere!

Kicking off with Star Dub's 'Light In The Dark', the track undulates and pulsates like a miragic lighthouse sifting in and out of the knocking gloom; then there's Altone's 'Tribal Cave' on the A2, which pares the textures back for a dynamic furtive shuffle of techy, understated proportions.AThe B hears Poro's slow breaks number 'Richt Her', the most understated of the bunch with its 2-stepped groove and slow-delayed whip-cracks and creeks; and finally, TM Shuffle and Monoder proffer the spitty 'Taattaa', which plays back like a sputtery radio transmission received from a distant polar ice floe.

On Side-1, Monomood kicks things off with 'Spring In Space,' a track that boasts deep sub-bass hits and long, blending chords. Its strong kick and clean production make it a powerful example of dub techno at its finest. Following this, Octal Industries delivers 'Rewind Repeat,' a piece that layers epic strings and a soaring melody over an abstract broken beat. Powerful and evocative! Side-2 opens with G-Prod and Taho's'"Light Forest,' an uptempo dub techno track with a techy edge. Its smooth production and dancefloor-ready vibe make it a seamless fusion of technical prowess and groove. Closing out the release is Gradient's 'Track 4,' which offers classic dub techno sounds. Gradient's exceptional craftsmanship is evident in this track, which epitomizes the lush textures and hypnotic rhythms that define the genre. Overall, Ohm Series #10 upholds its reputation by delivering high-quality dub techno that resonates with both purists and new listeners alike. Review: Berlin-based artist Pavel Milyakov collaborates with Yana Pavlova, Martyna Basta, Richie Culver and Torus on Enthropic Vision, an album-length collection of tracks spanning diverse genres. The A-side starts with the melancholic ambience of 'Moon Chant', featuring the ethereal vocals of Krakow experimental music scene veteran Martyna Basta, before 'Tesco' brings bleak trancey loops blended with British contemporary artist Richie Culver's spoken word poetry. 'Eternal Break', with Netherlands-based artist Torus, is all low subs, ecstatic pads and abrasive breaks, then the B-side kicks in with a'Gabba 17' - not a 170bpm gabba anthem, but rather a ghostly techno workout with an admittedly urgent 4/4 kick - and continues with another tune featuring Richie Culver's spoken word fused with breaks. The album closes with the grim beauty of 'The Thrill', recorded in collaboration with Ukrainian singer Yana Pavlova and transports more wised up listeners back to the hypnagogic universe of the duo's 2021 Blue LP.

Review: While techno has become increasingly difficult to define in recent decades – the term is applied to such a wide range of records that it’s become almost meaningless – long-serving German duo Skudge have always delivered music rooted in classic techno sounds – think the shimmering, intergalactic electronics of Detroit and hypnotic, locked-in grooves. ‘Tryptic’, their latest sensational single, continues in this vein – think deliciously bittersweet chords, wiggly TB-303 acid lines and snappy TR-909 drums. It’s majestic, melancholic and mind-altering in equal measure. It comes backed by two tasty remixes: a more hectic, dark, intense and percussive rub by Temudo, and a gorgeously positive, sun-kissed re-make – all colourful chords, soft-touch beats and mangled synth stabs – courtesy of Amadou.

Review: Some records just keep on selling out no matter how many times they appear. This is one of them. It is getting another run this year because second-hand copies are now worth well over 150 quid, and it still sounds as good as ever. Carl Finlow is an electro wizard who never fails to cook up captivating sonic spells and that's what he does here across two cuts - the frosty and turbulent 'Conduit' and the more lithe and silky 'Hashtag'. Volsoc's Orange Problem remix and a rework from the one and only Radioactive Man close out this brilliant 12".

Review: It's beyond the basics with a fresh new dub excursion for the premium customer; Another Channel amp up the form pioneered by the patently referent Basic Channel with a worthy widescreen dub upgrade. This eight-tracker from the Polish outfit nails the latter's original formula, whose essence lay in the irresistible combo of muted low end scoop-out drums, faint squinty noises, and Renaissance-perspectival ricochets, each component of which never once settled into rhythm or sound interpretable as a copy-paste prescription. Yes the flavours here are all analogue and none 'generative', as was the original intent of the dub techno pioneers. Another Channel's emulation of the sound is as faithful as a blindfolded chaplain, the strongest testament to which has to be the tricky sizzler known as 'Solid'.
