Elastic Collisions EP
Elastic Collisions EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ORSON 018. Rel: 30 Sep 19
  1. Elastic Collisions
  2. Octodecillion
  3. Probabilities
  4. Mechanomics
Review: Electro master par excellence Carl Finlow makes a swift return to Orson after gracing the label with his expert sounds just earlier this year. Orson have been busy, releasing Mesak and Point B in the meantime, but Finlow has that midas touch that never dulls with time. Lead track "Elastic Collisions" is a great slice of freaky electro that struts at an easy tempo, while "Octodecillion" wriggles and writhes a little faster for those that want a proper workout. "Probabilities" sees Finlow really exercising his gift for sound design and atmospheric composition in widescreen fashion. "Mechanomics" completes the set with a punchy growler that should sit comfortably in the bag of any dedicated electro jockey worth their salt.

  1. Camelia - "Transferring"
  2. Macarie - "Flu"
  3. Exander - "Odyssey"
  4. Lulla - "Distort Time"
Review:  Default Records has returned with its second release after compiling a roster of artists who are committed to establishing presence in the scene by pushing boundaries and pursuing excellence. Camelia starts us off on the A side with *Transferring*, which presents itself in a light and airy atmosphere. Its playful percussive notes are juxtaposed against its hypnotic groove making for a warm and easy listen. Macarie follows with *Flu*, a vibrant and dance-inducing sludge of gritty, piercing elements that seamlessly blooms into an emotional melody that is driven by its tantalizing rhythm. Label boss Exander shows the heavier side of his creative spectrum on the B side with *Odyssey*. The fullness of this cut accompanied by its intriguing and directive vocal is only enhanced by its delicate features and attention to detail. Closing out the compilation is Lulla's *Distort Time* which reveals all its insides with a symphony of glitchy bleeps and blops all reinforced by a cadence of drums and groove that stirs it into an electric soup.

  2. Artefakt - "Wanderings" (BNJMN remix)
  3. Luke Hess - "TDY" (Aubrey remix)
  4. Deep'a & Biri - "Pilgrim" (Tripeo Journey mix)
Review: Newcastle via London label Jaunt Records revisits its 10 year anniversary EP from 2017 with a series of great remixes by Inland, Jonas Kopp, Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff and Gian. This is the first of two EPs planned, and it offers up a timeless mix of heady techno and slick electro.

Berlin based Brit Inland tackles Jaunt resident Blackhall & Bookless's 'Spirit' and serves up a heavyweight wedge of warehouse techno. On the same side, Jonas Kopp flips 'Itria' into a sci-fi tinged bit of dub techno and long time studio partners Jasper Wolff & Maarten Mittendorff from Indigo Aera offer widescreen synth work and blissed out pads all tethered to rolling and rubbery drums. Gian's take on Stojche's track is a fantastically crisp and futurist piece of electro that will get anyone on their toes. This is a classy EP that showcases the sort of sounds you will hear on any Jaunt dance floor.

Review: A1 Starting off the Ep with D'Funks track Follow me with Jazzy Chords and his signature 909 Drums and humming bass.
A2 Adam Collins from Omni A.M. and Mark Ambrose found this one from the Vaults .A grooving bassline with Adam on the vocal effects with funky drums and with a tripped out sound from a Roland Jupiter 6.
B1 D'Funk takes it back the to the sound of the early 90's when House was moving into Drum and Bass. Great chords with his signature 909 programming over a break beat and a deep baseline.
B2 Mark Ambrose's Machine Man track is the faster and darker track on the Ep. A track that can be played slowed down as well. A old school bassline , heavy drums and tripped out effects.

Review: Mike 'Agent X' Clark is a true hero of the Detroit scene, but he rarely gets the props he deserves, making any outing of his a cause for celebration. El Prevost's No Speakers label knows what's up, and they've drafted in Clark for his killer jam "The Heat." The name is no foil, this track will set any party ablaze with its distinctive speech sample and saucy rhythm section. Alongside the original, there is a strong cast of remixers on hand to serve up deadly variations, from the label boss' skipping, psyched-out groover to Ben Sims' appropriately thumping techno workout. Peter Rocket especially impresses with a crafty breaks version that should slot in nicely with the resurgent electro scene.

Coming out of Warsaw and with a couple of aliases already under his belt, Blu Terra delivers three tracks spanning aquatic soundscapes and unexpected rave elements.

Einerlei has an unrivaled ability to create long revolving landscapes of techno, which over the course of the track take you on a journey, adding subtle elements as you listen, but retaining the core rif. This ability to create a whole piece of music out of a simple melody may seem simple in its delivery, but as you listen you notice the varying layers that make up these two driving dub techno tracks.

Review: If you dig electro, you should be well aware of the work of Transparent Sound. The Bognor Regis-based label has been serving up killer cuts and must-have EPs since the mid 1990s, though it's been rather quiet in recent years. In fact, "Gently Evil" is founder Orson Brambley's first album length excursion for almost a decade, making it a real event release. Kicking off with the bubbly intergalactic ambient of "Pretend Like You Care", the nine track album sees the veteran production partnership alternate between snappy electro club cuts, deeper electronic excursions, heady sci-fi soundscapes, punchy Motor City techno workouts and the kind of dark, unearthly dancefloor fare once associated with Drexciya. It is, then, a well thought out and executed album where the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout.

Review: Birmingham experimental dub terrorist Mick Harris inaugurates new Madrid imprint Trauma Collective here as Monrella, with four brand new executions of sheer naked aggression. It was under this moniker that Harris (aka Fret/Lull) released half a dozen EPs for Karl O'Connor's ZET label between 1996 - 2002 - a strong departure from his previous involvement in seminal grindcore outfit Naplalm Death, and the experimental Scorn project (with fellow band member Nik Bullen). Fierce, functional and direct impact grooves that lunge straight for the jugular, the cuts featured on the Build Time EP recapture the zeitgeist of legendary local club night House Of God - an institution responsible for unleashing fellow legends such as Regis and Surgeon back in the day. Although somewhat overlooked, Harris' sound under this alias has most definitely evolved, and follows through with enough dancefloor dynamics to blend with other modern techno sounds.

Review: The latest release on Verdant is brimming with talent, both from the original artists and the remixers. Sirko Muller leads the charge with the enveloping reverb immersion of "Affinity," a stately slice of dub techno if ever we heard one. RV800's "Bmax Hyperbole" version of the track inserts a more forthright groove, transmuting the spacious meditation into heads down dancefloor connection. Jonno & Tommo's "Efficacy" sparks up the B side with a moody strain of deep house loaded with noirish tension and peppered with needlepoint sound design wriggles. Then Havantepe delivers a remix of "Efficacy" that positively flips the script with a melancholic strain of electro that still bangs where it counts.

His calescent energy has only grown with time, culminating in three interminable tracks of jacked body mechanics. Whether it's the hammering slapback of the A side or the signature electro-infused B side, there's nothing here for a tame dance floor. Seeing as these heaters begged to be thrown around as doubles, a series of locked grooves have been included for those with the skillset to match their collection. With everything resting easily around the 130 mark, the searing pressure of these productions is undeniable. The Advent cements his legacy once again with a record that is not for the faint of heart.

creature, NonniMal. Dubbed after the eponymous volcanic debris flow that swallows whatever crosses its path, LAHAR refracts in its sound the ever-changing, jagged and
entangled landscapes of a crisis-riden time.

Residing today in the company of many post-industrial wonders, from Reykjavik's semi-subterranean water reserve Gvendarbrunnar to the phallus-shaped Smaralind mall, NonniMal prefers to give salience to his environment and remain extensively unknown. In this untitled high-octane techno EP, he spurs us to imagine an uncanny coalescence of glacial disaster into the minimalism of enumeration.

Review: The fifth Future Primitive release, Babylon Paralysis, sees the label work with an all-time favourite UK techno artist Steve O'Sullivan. We are super happy to be reissuing a classic slab of late '90s Bluetrain material from Steve in the shape of "Congo Shuffle", which originally surfaced as an untitled B1 on the timeless Echo Freaks 12". Newly extended and edited by O'Sullivan, "Congo Shuffle" has been lavishly cut at the Exchange giving new life to this bottom feeding monster.

On the flip, Steve blesses us with two brand new productions continuing the sub-heavy theme of the A side. Invisible Guest steps away from the straight up 4/4 productions he's nailed in recent years in favour of a stealthy broken dub approach that wouldn't be out of place on go-to Bristol label Idle Hands.

"Paralyzed Dub" is both the inspiration for the release title and another classic demonstration of Steve's ability to stun listeners with very few elements. Play loud and keep away from laptop speakers.

Following a limited run cassette version of the album, Who Are Ya lands on gatefold vinyl and spans 10 tracks and nearly 60 minutes of top quality turns, which sees our star player's BPM rising up into tougher, more hardcore-esque territory (Supremacy Acid, Roy Shat Over Ref) Who Are Ya also takes in some seriously smoked-out, slow-mo squelchers (Phaelon Acid 4, The Box) essentially making it a game of 2 halves (no mid tempo tracks allowed - ok??!) Through-out all of the album's giddy twists and turns however, it's Roy's trademark 303 constantly on the boil that crowns him man of the match, as he dribbles it skilfully from in and out of the mix, making him top of the league for acid once again. (Vi Vi) Vicious Games
Cat: PDON 009. Rel: 30 Aug 19
Review: Given that acid revivalists Paranoid London have yet to put a foot wrong, it's no surprise to find that "(Vi-Vi) Vicious Games" is another absolute belter. It's taken from the duo's forthcoming album and features sometime Posthuman collaborator Josh Caffe channeling his inner Robert Owens and Jamie Principle over a retro-futurist backing track. In its full length, the track brilliantly combines Paranoid London's jacking drums and thrusting acid bass with dreamy chords and just the right amount of glassy-eyed melodic flourishes. It sounds like a classic TRAX release given the Paranoid London treatment, which I'm sure we all agree is a very good thing indeed. If you're in the mood for something even sleazier and more driving, the Bam Bam-inspired Dub has it covered.

Review: Path Records' second release for 2019 showcases label head Reade Truth releasing a stunning EP that saw their debut during his 2019 live tour. With hard hitting Brooklyn flavoured techno-electro beats and his trademarked immorally playful sampling style positively punctuate this exceptional release. The New York native has released on a plethora of serious, for those who know, labels including: Planet E, Strictly Rhythm, Sonic Groove, Black Market, and Cartulis Music. Path Records is known for their uniquely deep electronic visions. With a steady mixture of both new material and old unreleased tracks, the label remains hotly anticipated. Further releases will include Upsetting keys and The Lotus Project,

  1. Beat Nouveau

  3. Tat Ark
  4. Beau Geste
Review: Earlier this year, Florian Stoffelbauer donned the Heap alias for the first time in 14 months for an EP of pitched-down jams bristling with lo-fi synthesizer melodies and crispy drum machine hits. On "Beat Nouveau", his first EP for Mechatronica, he further develops this sound, drawing influence from the mid-tempo bump, trippy acid lines and faintly foreboding melodies of 1980s Belgian new beat. The title track sets the tone, with Stoffelbauer reaching for angular, alien electronics, moody bass, bubbly acid lines and eight-bit computer game melodies. The Gamma Intel remix of the same track is arguably even more druggy and foreboding, while "Tat Ark" is a psychedelic shuffle through slow electro drums and mind-altering electronics. If pitched-down ambient techno is your thing, closing cut "Beau Geste" should be essential listening.

Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

Review: Ghetto-house originator DJ Deeon continues to dish up devilishly dancefloor-friendly material a quarter of a century after making his debut on Dance Mania. This first ChiWax outing is really rather good. As with much of his output, all bar one of the six cuts (the curiously off-beat, pitched-down "Much Respect") are powered forward by beats and basslines so springy that you'd think they were made with some future fusion of rubber and elastic. There are a few cuts that boast chopped and looped vocal stabs (see "In This House" and the classic late night ghetto-house jack of "Da Bomb"), while the A-side's three booming cuts offer subtly different takes on percussion-rich, bass-heavy ghetto-tech.

  5. Ascot/WW - "Alien Vision"
Review: Saucer-eyed rave revivalists Tone Dropout can usually be relied upon to deliver the goods, especially if you're looking for sweaty, energy-packed slabs of warehouse ready techno, acid and electro. The label's latest missive is packed to the rafters with such giddy and forthright fare, to the bleeping, mind-altering insanity of Dawl & Sween's acid-fired throb-job "Laser Guided", to the "Bleep and Breaks" pressure of Samuel Padden's bustling "Quad Damage", to the stripped-back machine techno heaviness of Daif's similarly bleepy "Mysterious Freakin History". Elsewhere, the Ascot/WW track sits somewhere between early breakbeat hardcore and ambient techno, while Skywave Transmission v XOTR's "Warehouse 101" lives up to its name. Serious heat!

Review: Hot on the heels of the release of their first album in 17 years, Underground Resistance affiliates Scan 7 return with one of their funkiest and most accessible EPs to date. Opener "Chuuch" is a riotous and righteous affair that sees main men TrackMasta Lou and Mr Hooper peppering a funky techno beat with killer samples from a wild and celebratory gospel disco classic. It's one of those tracks that will have even the most miserable clubber throwing their hands skywards in celebratory release. The pair continues on a similar vein on the organ-driven gospel techno stomp of "No Enemy No Table", before moving in a deeper and more relaxed direction on the equally as impressive "Here To There".

Review: When it comes to offering up tough, mind-altering techno, few are quite as capable as Amelie Lens. Further proof arrives via the Belgian's second EP of the year, a four-track collection of dark and intense club cuts on regular home Lenske. Check first the thrusting weightiness of "Helium", where psychedelic lead lines rise above booming bass, trance-inducing drums and intoxicated late night electronics, before admiring the armour-plated stomp of "Man Over Machine", where Lens utters key words over another slamming rhythm track. Elsewhere, "Little Robot" is a mind-altering chunk of spiraling techno-trance, while "Storm" channels the raged intensity of Laurent Garnier's "Crispy Bacon" and re-imagines it for the 21st century.

Review: It's been a while since Zolta Pal last used the Jaffa Surfa alias. In fact, his last outing under the pseudonym dropped three years ago on Houseworx (the US garage-flavoured Pimpin' EP). This three-tracker happily finds him in fine form, delivering a more tech-tinged trio of aquatic deep house cuts. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the subterranean shuffle and liquid melodies of "Bazz" and heavy percussive bump of "Psy Lance" - all thickset, multi-tracked drums, calming pads and fizzing electronics - to the beatless bliss of "Preacha Bonus", which - unsurprisingly given the title - features a deep south preacher chatting over heady ambient chords.

First released way back in 1994, "Outernational Wah" is a slamming chunk of acid-laden, bass-heavy techno/house fusion laden with sweaty vocal samples, floor-shaking percussion and lo-fi, post-Bleep electronics. It comes accompanied by a cracking drum track ("Wah Beats") and the electro-influenced late night heaviness of 1995's "Programmable Rhythmer (Top Gear Mix)".

Review: For the second salvo in their "Secret Sun" series of unreleased 1990s techno tracks, O.C.D has plucked five superb cuts from the dusty DAT tapes of Scott Featherstone, a period producer who released one 12" as Beyond A Void way back in 1992. They've found some genuine gold, too, with the five previously unheard tracks offering a melodious and floor-friendly mixture of languid electro rhythms, shuffling breakbeats, tight techno drums, weighty bass, colourful lead lines, atmospheric ambient techno pads, subtle Yorkshire bleep motifs and lashings of sun-kissed deep house melodies. Highlights are plentiful throughout, though we're particularly enjoying the sub-heavy swing of "Dat007", the Motor City influenced brilliance of "Ecordes" and the clanking sci-fi futurism of "Cheeting" [sic].

Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of little-known electronic gorgeousness, Holland's Music From Memory crew has taken a trawl through the impeccable and largely overlooked catalogue of Japanese ambient musician Toshifumi Hinata. The essential "Broken Relief" draws on material recorded by the musician between 1985 and 87, joining the dots between gentle beat-scapes, inspired new age soundscapes, warm ambient explorations and glassy-eyed instrumentals rich in fluid fretless bass, twinkling pianos, shuffling rhythms and chords so tactile you might want to go to bed with them. It's an inspired set all told, with an impressive number of highlights. These include the evocative piano lament "Ikoku No Onna Tachi", the spacey ambient swirl of "Colored Air", and the undeniably Balearic grooves of "Atarashii Yuhbokumin".

Review: Here is something we've been all waiting for! With some timeless releases on his back catalogue, Perlon and Hartchef Discos to name a few, Audio Werner is joining the mighty Sushitech family and finally releases his debut album!

There's always something brilliant and hypnotic about the groove of Audio Werner and this album takes the brilliant sound of the master even further, crossing between proper deep techno and the more shuffled rhythms that we love.

On A Different Note is a triple gatefold 12" with eight fresh and well produced tracks. Extreme quality from both Sushitech and Audio Werner, per usual... Essential release!
