Everything Is Fine (Chuggy mix)
Everything Is Fine (Chuggy mix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 106. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Everything Is Fine (3:18)
  2. Everything Dub (3:25)
  3. Everything Is Fine (Chuggy Discomix) (7:23)
Review: To close the 3 EP reissue series of Neville King and Lee Laing's King & City label, the all female group Charisma are presented with their summer infused Lovers cut, Everything Is Fine.

Three Lewisham friends, Angela Richardson on lead vocals, with Geselle and Janie backing, were active from 1982 to 1990, but are really remembered for the early recordings made with Neville King. Their debut, Everything Is Fine rides the Lovers sound at its peak. Written with One Blood's Lloyd Robinson, with the rest of band of Robinson brothers providing the rhythm section, this is pure South London sound system music.

Recorded again at TMC (Tooting Music Centre) Recording Studios - working alongside the likes of Dillinger, Tradition and New Musik - Everything Is Fine rides a beautiful soul reggae rhythm as Trevor (Drums) and Lloyd (Bass) Robinson set the foundations, while One Blood provide the Dub mix.

A true love's lament, a song of hope, serenity and pure vibes. Label head Chuggy slides behind the mixing desk for an extended Discomix that stretches, loops and dubs the vocal and dub back forth, to close a glimpse at this uniquely British phenomenon, taking reggae closer to it's heart and soul.

Arise (7")
Cat: TRS JAM2. Rel: 01 Mar 21
  1. Arise (3:45)
  2. Arise (version) (3:26)
Review: TRS Records (Top Ranking Sound) is an independent reissue from France that shines a light on the lost, obscure and the forgotten. For their latest edition, they present a Jamstyle collaboration reissued here from 1999 - a Homer Harris production in the form of Chukki Star's classic to those that know titled 'Arise'. Anthony Williams is a UK-based 'singjay' who has had quite a prolific career. The original version of this fetches exorbitant amounts on the secondhand market, so certainly do not sleep on this one.

Sit Down & Wonder
Cat: TRS BS8. Rel: 03 Aug 20
  1. Sit Down & Wonder (3:41)
  2. Sit Down & Wonder (version remix) (2:56)
Review: Kingston artist Johnny Clarke was at one time of the country's most exciting new singers. He dealt in heavy dread tunes and more romantic love songs as well s plenty of big covers, and was admired by the discerning dancehall patrons of Jamaica and elsewhere. To celebrate one of his labels - Black Scorpio - hitting 50 years in the business they are reissuing some of their biggest tunes, and "Sit Down & Wonder" is one of them that is now on a 7" for the first time. A new 2020 mix is on the flipside to make this a perfect mix of old and new.

If You Ask Me
Cat: DAP 1126. Rel: 18 Dec 19
  1. Leon Dinero - "If You Ask Me" (3:27)
  2. Screechy Dan - "Bandits" (3:53)
Review: Gold standard US label Daptone comes correct with another essential 7" here, this time focussing on new kid on the block Leon Dinero, who only debuted in June but makes a big impression again. "If You Ask Me" is a swaggering reggae roller with all the right guitar riffs and dusty drums finished off by his carefree and sunny vocal work. It is sweet as honey and delivered with pride. The flipside comes from NYC's main reggae man Screechy Dan, who keeps it real with his classically inclined "Bandits" that is a takedown of the gentrification of his hometown with real Jamaican passion.

  2. Space In My Soul (feat Neech) (5:42)
  3. Death Warmed Up (6:20)
  4. RHYTHM (6:25)
  5. 7 Orbits (7:20)
Review: The Banoffee Pies reissue series is back with a quick follow up to the last one with another set of crucial tunes from the Euphonic archives. The London duo made up of producer Rob Henry and former Graffiti artist turned DJ Nick Trimm were big player sin the 90s and worked with various key players in the dub scene. 'Revolution Solution' was recorded in New York with friends from the underground hip hop scene, Dr. Israel, Soothsayer and Kirsty Rock, and is a superb ragga jungle tune. 'Space In My Soul' is a gloriously cosmic bit of synth laced broken beat and then there's a trio of heady beat workouts including the downbeat outer space trip that is '7 Orbits.'

  3. Thriller U - "Give Me Collaterals" (3:39)
  4. Thriller U - "Give Me Collaterals" (version) (3:31)
Review: Top Ranking Sound continue their fine run of form with another big hitter this July. Frankie Paul leads the charge with "Don't Pressure Me" and its rugged drums, tumbling bass and hooky riffs. all with some summery steel drums layered in to finish things off in Caribbean style. Pinchers take the second slot with the more natty and physical "Grammy", which has a real edge to it as the drums roll on. Things slip into more digital territory on Thriller U's "Give Me Collaterals", which has oodles of echo and reverb to flesh out the bottom end. A second version offers another fresh perspective on this crisp dub.

Cat: WDR 001. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. The Lion Has Come (feat Brother Culture) (3:15)
  2. Dub Has Come (3:03)
Review: Hondub Hiroaki started producing music in the 2000s as a teenager so is a master of his machines. This new one is a big collision of different sounds and textures. 'The Lion Has Come (feat Brother Culture)' goes first and is al staggering, swaggering drum lines, digital dub and fizzing, pixelated leads that get you banging your chest. It's stark and dark for future lovers, with Brother Culture vocals adding to the fire. The flip offers up the Dub Has Come, a version filled with effects and echo and just as much tension.

LSDLNG (transparent vinyl 7")
Cat: DSMG 001. Rel: 07 Dec 21
  1. LSDLNG (3:31)
  2. LSDLNG (Drum Tool) (3:14)
Review: Frenchman King Doudou's DSMG label makes a major debut here with a vital first release. The limited edition clear 7" is a dancehall offering but one that takes its cues from old school reggaeton pioneers such as DJ Blass and DJ Negro. They are then skewed through a forward thinking lens to result in the physical 'LSDLNG' with its heavy bass and dembow rhythms, wooden hits and fizzing modular synth textures. Flip it over for a drumapella that will add real reggae ton vibes to any DJ mix.

  6. Bangarang (3:33)
Review: L'Entourloop is a mysterious new crew headed up by Sir James and King Johnny, who fed on sound system culture and are now elder statesmen in the scene in their own rights. Lovers of vinyl culture and "epic dialogue of cinema's yesteryear" they mix up those influences with hip hop and reggae into fresh new forms. This new EP - "Golden Nuggets" - in collaboration with the Jamaican Skarra Mucci aka the "Dancehall President", offers crisp digi dub, UK funky drum patterns and plenty of synthesised bass to get your party pumping, all with some natty vocal deliveries, odes to weed and plenty of praise given to jah.

How Long
Cat: DSR 18375. Rel: 20 Jul 20
  1. How Long (3:44)
  2. How Long (version) (3:28)
Review: Culture began his career in the dancehall while still at school and his rare ability even at that age led teachers to advise him to pursue a career in the Jamaican recording industry. He soon went on to pick up plenty of tips and tricks from working with King Tubby before establishing his own name. He even moved to London for a while and continued to hone his craft and "How Long" proved to be one his biggest success along side "After So Many Years" and "Original Days." It's a still futuristic sounding cut with sci-fi effects and crisp hits as well as that trademark vocal work.

Do You Know?
Cat: BZR 001V. Rel: 23 Sep 21
  1. Do You Know? (3:27)
  2. Haile Selassie (dub) (3:24)
Review: Before Zero serve up a proudly UK slanted package here where UK grime meets UK dub. It finds two top talents in wordsmith and beat maker Majical and Kibir La Amlak link up to great effect. 'Do You Know' is a lesson about the King of all Kings, Emperor Haile Selassie delivered with lyrical dexterity. The tune started out as a dub plate but has proven so popular it now gets its own proper reals, with beats that fuse grime, garage, hip hop and reggae into a sound being called 'roots hop culture.' Flip it over for a dub that takes out the vocal and allows the ricocheting hits and bottomless bass to hit different.

  1. Peter Metro - "Dancing Spirit" (5:43)
  2. Peter Metro - "Dancing Spirit" (dub) (5:13)
  3. Daddy Culture - "Give Them Style" (5:02)
Review: Tuff Scout come through with some crucial riddims here from Peter Mereo and Daddy Culture. Metro goes first with his particularly natty 'Dancing Spirit', the intense vocal work never letting up over the suspenseful chords that drop in from great height. A dub version pairs things back to the heavy weight drums and bass. On the flip is 'Give Them Style', a digi-dub stepper with shiny synths bringing electric feels to the plucked acoustic guitar and lumpy drum work. All three tunes are primed and ready for sound system deployment this summer and beyond.
