All I Do
All I Do (7")
Cat: AHS 019. Rel: 02 Jul 20
  1. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit vocal) (4:05)
  2. All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit instrumental) (4:05)
Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

Farmarama Remixes Vol 2
Cat: OTHER 137. Rel: 13 Nov 19
  1. Higher Powers (Aleksandir mix) (5:43)
  2. Michael (AMCA Low Cal dub) (7:00)
  3. Mountains & Waterfalls (Felipe Gordon The Moody remix) (6:44)
  4. Higher Powers (Aleksandir AMCA demo edit) (6:24)
Review: Long time Balearic maestros A Man Called Adam came back strong with a new album this past summer, and now the gift keeps on giving with a second series of tasteful remixes from it. Aleksandir's mix of "Higher Powers" is a beautifully gentle and melodic deep house groover. Pads drift by like zephyrs and Sally Rogers' vocals appear like illusions on the clouds. A Man Called Adam themselves then dub out "Michael" with muted acid lines and muffled vocals. Felipe Gordon then layers up balmy pads and warming chords on his remix of "Mountains & Waterfalls" and a demo edit of "Higher Powers" from Aleksandir closes things out ion glistening, heartfelt melodic house fashion.

Fields & Forests 2
Cat: F&F 002. Rel: 10 Nov 14
  1. Fantasy
  2. Raw Abstractionism
  3. Torri Wowo
  4. Acoustic Cut
Review: After a successful debut release with Untitled Gear, Croatian label continues their journey through fields and forests. Still exploring the Russian Federation, only this time they hired Udacha's honcho and main protagonist A5. Record kicks off with 'Fantasy'. A dreamy kalimba piece which eventually evolves into a deep house track and could be described as a soundtrack from your latest dream while 'Raw Abstractionism' doesn't disappoint it's name. On the flip side we are introduced to the afro banger 'Torri Wowo' which feels almost like driving through safari on a truck. 'Acoustic Cut' calms things down and brings us to an end with a clear message.

  4. Superbass #2 (5:32)
  5. Walls (5:36)
  6. Transphat (5:07)
Review:  Given its title, you might expect Aaron K's second vinyl outing to be filled with forthright, sub-heavy sleaze. While there's some weighty low-end pressure to be found - especially on the sparse, dubbed-out delights that are 'Superbass 1' and 'Superbass 2' - for the most part the EP delivers blends of atmospheric, analogue deep house and jacking acid house that prioritise mood and melody over significant bass-weight. It's a fusion that works really well throughout, with highlights including the subtle electro influences and deep, spaced-out riffs of 'Transphat', the picturesque, arpeggio-driven melodies of 'Folding Arps', the jaunty deep acid of 'Everyone in the Pool (Filtered Mix)', and the cosmic late night hypnotism of 'Walls'.

Review: 2014 was a definitely a huge year for dance music, with many up and coming artists being thrown into the lifestyle of hectic partying and relentless touring schedules. This also means that those who exploded onto the scene prior are no longer the new kids on the block. A few years is a long time in the life of a DJ, and the first few years are often the maddest.
The Adana Twins are a perfect example of one of these artists, having emerged onto the scene in 2012 with releases such as 'Everyday' and 'Strange', from the off it was clear that they had everybody's undivided attention.' (Pulse Radio) With DJ names like Take It Easy and Friso, it's probably to be presumed that German duo Adana Twins don't take themselves too seriously. That tongue in cheek attitude could be heard on their first productions and remixes. It's now almost almost three years later and the Twins' music vision is constantly developing.

After their highly anticipated release 'Drive feat. Khan' from 2014 the 2 boys from Hamburg are finally back on Exploited. 'Bleeding' features vocal snippets from LA based Human Life. This anthem has been causing massive feedback in their DJ-Sets so far. We hope you like it too. Including also Remixes from The/Das (Life&Death/Krakatau) and Mark E (Spectral Sound/Merc).

My People (Love Can Live Forever)
  1. My People (Love Can Live Forever) (5:02)
  2. My People (Love Can Live Forever) (dub mix) (5:01)
Review: Get your hands in the air and wave them about like you just don't care, because this is exactly the sort of tune that will make you do that. It's built on huge old school referencing breakbeats, with just as retro piano chords layered over the top. Add in some twitchy acid sounds, slamming drums and a lung-busting diva vocal and you have an irresistible, festival sized house anthem that will unite all dancers in raptures. On the flip is a dub for those who like something slightly more subtle, but it still bangs like a heavyweight with her back against the ropes.

Javelin
Javelin (12")
Cat: AMF 001. Rel: 26 Sep 18
  1. Javelin (9:26)
  2. Javelin (dub) (9:26)
Review: There's plenty of hype swirling around this short-run debut from Londoners Adelphi Music Factory, with regular radio plays and appearances in a host of top DJs' set lists resulting in insatiable demand. It helps, of course, that "Javelin" is an absolute beast. Packed with energy, the A-side version sees them generate maximum sweatiness by working cut-up gospel vocal samples atop a loopy, full-throttle, techno-tempo disco-house groove. Honestly, it's one seriously heavyweight rub that's guaranteed to get dancefloors eating out of the palm of your hand. The B-side "Dub" is, if anything, even wilder and heavier, with the little-known outfit utilizing stretched-out, delay-laden vocal lifts and restless piano stabs over ten action-packed minutes.

  1. Feel Right Now (Power!) (7:12)

Review: The enigmatic Adelphi Music Factory returns after last year's underground goodie "Javelin" with a brand new scorcher that's a sure shot to burn up dancefloor this year. "Feel Right Now (Power!)" is a joyous, driving anthem of resistance following in the tradition of proper late '90s funky house. On the flip, the soulful and uplifting loops of "Juicy" is a euphoric call to arms. Sisterhood. Brotherhood. Harmony. Dance.

Uprising (12")
Cat: AMF 003. Rel: 04 Mar 20
  1. Uprising (7:09)
  2. Uprising (dub) (6:51)
Review: It would be fair to say that this outing from piano-loving Sheffield sorts Adelphi Music Factory is a little bit big. And when we mean big, we mean BIG. Like, "phew, I might need a lie down after dancing to it" big. Of course, all their tunes are rushing and life affirming, but there's something particularly breathless about the blend of banged-out piano riffs, stomping gospel-house beats and big-lunged gospel vocals on "Uprising". The arrangement cleverly maximizes dancefloor impact by including all manner of builds and drops, while the flipside Dub mix only strips out a relatively limited amount of the vocal. The whole thing is a giddy blast from the past and the kind of thing we could expect people going crazy to at festivals this summer.

Blue Monday
Cat: AV 001. Rel: 15 May 19
  1. Blue Monday (6:40)
  2. Blue Monday (dub) (5:05)
Review: Mancunian Kevin Gorman used to make some great minimal techno on his Mikrowave imprint but has since moved on to create some of his best music under the Adesse Versions moniker. With a slew of fine edits and remixes under his belt, he presents us with a killer cover and tribute that's set to be one of the summer's biggest anthems. A tribute to the seminal New Order classic "Blue Monday", Gorman retains the very same Moog bass and ARP strings from the original, over a groovy breakbeat and a vocal reminiscent of Bernard Sumner himself. It was an ambitious feat, but Gorman manages to pull of an impressive rendition here, which also comes accompanied with a handy instrumental version on the flip.

  1. Adjust Your Love (6:04)
  2. Easy Love Dub (6:22)
  3. Horizons (5:05)
Review: We can confirm that Adam "Admin" Wickens is not only a hugely talented DJ and producer, but also a thoroughly nice chap. Here he makes his bow on Better Listen with a three-tracker packed to the rafters with warmth, soul and groove. Check first A-side "Adjust Your Love", a sample-fired workout that effortlessly joins the dots between disco, deep house and star-kissed jazz-funk, before turning your attention to the chopped-and-screwed samples, toasty sub-bass, languid beats and echoing piano snippets of "Easy Love Dub". The Bristol-based producer rounds things off in fine style via "Horizons", a slightly bouncier house cut that makes great use of some bluesy piano samples and another stoned, glassy-eyed bassline.

  1. Reach For Love (5:14)
  2. You've Got Me (5:16)
Review: This is Adam Wickens' - aka ADMIN - first appearance for Kolour LTD, and we're happy to see the UK deep house producer continuing his steady path to maturity. This two-tracker is part of the label's 'LTD 10s' series, and this particular one is the fourth instalment; we love it not only for the quality that has graced the releases up till now, but also because we're fools for the ten inch format. "Reach For Love" sounds like it could be on Moodymann's Mahogani, a sensual house charmer complete with gorgeous piano keys and assembled with pure hypnotic delight. Side B's "You've Got Me" is similarly cool and laid-back, but the beat is speedier here, the percussion more floor-centric and the vocals sexier than ever. What a gorgeous little tip - cop it!

Review: You can always count on Afrikan Sciences to flip the script with what you think soulful electronic music should sound like. Tearing the grid up and pinging off on a cosmic voyage in between the notes, this is futuristic, jazz-minded machine music of the highest order. "Reciprocess" is a shuddering, but surprisingly focused exercise in cracking open the house music structure, while "Hullman Z" gets into a brilliantly futuristic boogie. "Just In Case I Do" takes a more laid back approach without eschewing the essential dose of freakiness, and "Son Shine" takes things in an explicitly broken beat direction with spellbinding results.

Review: The enigmatic Alex Agore returns! The Berlin based producer and co head of No Matter What (with Scot James Johnston) and Closer To Truth (with Brit David Nicol) serves up some more of his timeless classic house jams here on Pocket Money: an independent label based out of Manchester that's dedicated to releasing modern underground house music with rhythm and soul, influenced by New York, Detroit and Chicago. This follows up a great release by Polish producer Soul Habitat. On the A side it's all about the raw NYC basement vibe of "A-Dubz #3" taking you all the way back to the glory days of The Red Zone. On the flip, the uplifting garage sounds of "A-Dubz #7" are reminiscent of classic Junior Boys Own while the thumpin' "A-Dubz #9" has that undeniably Kerri Chandler vibe happening. Tip!

Review: Californian human beatbox Dave Aju is at it again, following up his debut last year for Japan's Mule Musiq. Much like the material on the "TXLAX" LP (which explored his move back to Los Angeles from Berlin) the material on "Ciao Sun" is another serving of Aju's idiosyncratic sound: tongue-in-cheek, wacky and off-kilter minimal house with a fine attention to detail. You can hear his newfound enthusiasm for "La La Land" on here: the A side is brimming with sweltering carnival vibes with Latin house epic "Go!", while on the flipside features the lo-slung afterhours psychedelia of "Glendale Blvd Boogie" and the dusty, hip-hop inspired broken beats of the title track.

  4. Art Of Tones - "Flower Child" (feat Anduze) (7:01)
Review: Like its numerous predecessors, 16th edition of Z Records' long running "Attack The Dancefloor" series is packed to the rafters with tried and tested dancefloor treats, most of which have never appeared on vinyl before. First up, Saison tackles Akabu's 2001 classic "Ride The Storm", turning it into a deep, bouncy and rubbery chunk of lilting, string-drenched house goodness, before Dr Packer delivers a subtly tooled-up take on The Love Symphony Orchestra's grandiose and sexually-charged 1978 disco classic "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". Label head honcho Joey Negro provides a superb deep disco rework of one of his own productions, the Sunburst Band's 2004 summer sing-along "Everyday", while Art of Tones' "Flower Child" is a flash-fried, disco-funk romp laden with superb lead vocals from Anduze.

Review: Having lurked in the tape scene for many moons, AL-90 brings his dishevelled house sound to the dancefloor with this single for Tape Throb. Despite the name of the label, this is in fact destined for vinyl, and leads with the fuzzy yet funky "Cheremushki Groove", assisted in the process by Monokle. There's a whiff of Gerry Read's dusty production values present on "Fluid", but AL-90 seems locked into a more discernible beat. That changes on "Cataract" with its degraded hardcore breaks drowning under a sea of unforgiving processing, while Tape Throb label boss The Cyclist is an appropriate choice of remixer to finish the record with a crunchy yet focused version of "Cheremushki Groove".

Review: All proceeds and profits from this new drop on Selections will be donated to Black Lives Matter charities, making it an even more appealing offer beyond the sheer quality of the house heads gathered together here. The mighty Kai Alce leads the charge with the sweet and bumping 'Hear The Waves', which is followed up by the punchy but warm 'Furacao Dento' by Demuir. Nick Holder opens the B side up with a killer slice of broken beat house, all crooked percussion locked into a deep, rolling groove. 83 West finishes the record off with a teasing, slow-release heater that keeps the energy simmering throughout - a masterfully executed cut to hold the dancefloor under a spell.

Review: The Axces label began last year with a split 12" from Kasper Marott and Alfredo92, and now the latter returns to the label he founded to present a full EP of interlocking electronics with an experimental, home-listening slant. "Mimis" centres around some wonderfully sculpted rhythms and a tasteful dose of dub processing, while "Helfand" takes things further out with dislocated machine chatter and bongo triggering that moves like electro without the 808 backbone. "Adax_PCP" is a crafty slice of crooked techno that plays out with a live, jammed vibe and a jazzy key refrain that brings some noticeable humanity into the track, and then "Scalex" completes the set with further synthetic wobbles around fractured rhythms that look beyond genre conventions to create something truly fresh.

  2. Mille & Hirsch - "I Get DEEP"
  3. Mateo & Matos - "Idris Rises"
  4. Vincent Inc - "Tears Of God"
Review: AntiDEEPressant is a new label that kicks off with a strong cast of contenders exploring interesting facets of the deep house tradition, starting off with the sultry wonder of Lola Allen's "Karma". There's mystery woven in between the African percussion that shapes out her track, and it's a pleasure to get lost in. Millie & Hirsch take a tender approach to Roland D Clark's classic "I Get Deep", while Mateo & Matos push the tempo back up with the jazz-tinged "Idris Rises." Vincent Inc is last on the list, and he cruises in with the slow and strange tones of "Tears Of God".

Not Going Back (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GR 001. Rel: 01 Jun 15
  1. Not Going Back (original mix) (6:16)
  2. Not Going Back (Jay Tripwire's Marimba Machine Redux) (7:51)
  3. Not Going Back (Grant Dell's Euro mix) (8:31)
Review: Giant Records is the new label from Grant Dell, a man that has been at the forefront of the tech-house scene for over 15 years and has amassed a truly enviable back catalogue of releases. Giant's first release is from Mark Allister, whose skill for crafting a proper old school tech-house groove on "Not Going Back" is more than matched by his talent for laying down vocals. Complementing this original, Jay Tripwire turns in a self-styled "Marimba machine redux", whilst label head Grant Dell chooses to focus on Allister's vocal for a remix that possesses keys that wouldn't sound out of place on a Kraftwerk track. Supported by Mr G, Doc Martin, Eddie Richards, John Digweed, Richie Hawtin.

  1. Dakar Disco (6:01)
  2. Contra (6:33)
  3. Dakar Disco (Kuniyuki remix) (7:26)
  4. Back In Town (6:28)
Review: Summer might be on its way out, but Alma Negra is keeping the good time vibes alive with this brilliant jazzed up and cosmic EP of glowing house sounds. Each track is musically rich, with trumpet riffs up top and drawn out astral basslines down low on the likes of "Contra." "Dakar Disco" is brilliantly tropical and bright, while the Kuniyuki remix is a little more after dark in its vibe, with plunging bass taking you into a more heads down mood. "Back In Town" is an expressive, loose and free flowing percussive jam that bristles and brims with vitality.
