Moxy Edits 004
Moxy Edits 004 (1-sided 12")
Cat: MYEDITS 004. Rel: 14 Dec 21
Track 1 (vocal) (6:21)
Review: More from the reliable Moxy Edits series, a sneaky, rework-focused offshoot of Darius Syrossian's Mozy Muzik label. This time round, there's no superfluous filler and alternative versions, just a sole, peak-time focused workout that's been designed to have maximum dancefloor impact. What's on offer is unusual but rather brilliant: a tooled-up house revision of a classic chunk of psychedelic era pop cut that wraps jangly guitars and a glassy-eyed female vocal around a driving bassline and sweaty house beats. It's a simple idea that's been brilliantly executed and far more tasteful than it has any right to be. In other words, it's a genuinely good bootleg remix that you'll hear loads in clubs in the weeks and months ahead.

Track 4 (7:29)
Review: Thomas Berg's Soundscape Versions presents the third instalment on sublabel Mystic Versions with four unknown cuts by different artists across the globe, produced and performed using all analogue hardware gear. Sublime dub techno experiments captured in all their glacial and cavernous intensity, from the deep minimalist groove of "A1", the thumping delay-drenched reduction of "A2" to the housey and uplifting feel good vibes of "A4" with its jazz-bar loops. It's about quality over quantity on Mystic Versions and the wait has most certainly been worth the while.

Something For The Mind (3:43)
Non-Binary Joys On The Venus Holodeck (5:49)
Czary Mary (5:34)
Review: Having set out their stall via a fine first collaborative release on Bordello a Parigi a couple of months back, Mytron and Ofofo pitch up on Multi-Culti. As you'd expect from a label with such a strong track record of multi-cultural musical fusion, much of the EP defies easy categorization. Sure, you'll find a chunk of Italo-influenced electro ("Non-Binary Joys on the Venus Holodeck") and a couple of slabs of madcap disco-funk fusion ("Si Jambo" and "2Tac Onana"), but also a heavyweight slab of low-slung punk-funk/post disco ("Czary Mary"). Oh, and the skewed electro-funk-meets-intergalactic synth pop insanity of "Something for Your Mind", which also boasts some notably brain-melting vocoder action. More, please!

Review: Following up releases by the likes of Mark Seven, Florist and Cygnus, Ari Goldman's Washington D.C-based World Building returns with this awesome varioust artist compilation. Neighborhood Watch Volume One features a wide selection of moods and grooves: NativeSun vs JamesBangura get stuck into some dark dubstep on 'Demon Mode' much like The Khan does later on the deeply meditative 'Part Of Me (Ode To DC), while Sami gets their swing on with the classic house of 'Marty & Jack', Juana's tunneling 'It's Low' gives you a dose of heroin house and over on the flip Max D gets deep down and dirty on 'No Snare'.

Getting Colder (club mix) (6:54)
Getting Colder (5:01)
Getting Colder (Byron The Aquarius remix) (5:11)
Review: Scopic Records - a new UK label which aims to "bring newcomers and artists with backgrounds, regardless of their background or gender" - launches with a single by its founder New Digital Fidelity in collaboration with singer Monet. We get three nicely different mixes of 'Getting Colder' in all. The A-side is taken up by the club mix, a classic New York deep house groove with chunky pianos chords and Monet's confident vocal performance. The flip begins with the original, a slower version but still effortlessly groovy, bringing its soul, jazz, and R&B influences to the fore. US techno's man of the moment Byron the Aquarius completes the set by turning the track inside out with shuffling hats, snapping machinefunk snares and a bubbling bass, making it even more impressive by exposing its moving parts and giving them a neat polish.

Walkin' On (6:03)
Pao De Acucar vs Vesuvius (4:45)
Crooklyn Survivor (6:07)
Review: A fresh split EP by two German producers Max Newton and Matalo, who both make up part of the Omena collective. Four cuts of deep house and downtempo emanate across two waxen sides; the likes of 'Crooklyn Survivor' and 'Walkin On' straddle tension and jazzy ease, with their distant hip-hop and breakbeat samples mixing in with noir string trills, romance-language monologues, and steady house beats. The opener 'U-Bahn At Night' is equally infectious, recalling the raw-around-the-edges feel of the earliest Chicago house releases.

CircoLoco Records & NEZ Present CLR 002
Cat: CLR 002V. Rel: 28 Sep 22
NEZ - "You Wanna?"
NEZ & ScHoolboy Q - "Let's Get It"
NEZ, Moodymann & Gangsta Boo - "Freaks"
Review: In a break from their usual program, Circoloco look to Chicago and the rising star that is NEZ. Previously spotted last year on Three Six Zero alongside Felix Da Housecat, now NEZ throws down three varied cuts that show he's one to keep tabs on. First up comes 'You Wanna?', a pumped up peak time house cut with our man upfront inciting the dancefloor to come alive. 'Let's Get It' drops down into trap mode with Schoolboy Q jumping on the mic, and then the B side turns the heat up with the mighty Moodymann and Gangsta Boo chipping in to create a party monster in 'Freaks'. Skip this one at your peril.

Nitro DeLuxe - "This Brutal House" (UK edit) (7:02)
Mark Knight & Nitro DeLuxe - "Brutal" (extended mix) (6:18)
Review: Toolroom founder Mark Knight lands back on his own imprint, updating one of house music's most influential records, 'Let's Get Brutal' by Nitro Deluxe, bringing it forward to floors in 2023 under the new title 'Brutal'. Following up his collaboration with NYC house legend Todd Terry on the label in March with 'Make You Happy', this reissue reminds us of the esteemed, originally Cutting Records-released classic - a track which later went on to be sampled by Kevin Saunderson (aka Good Life) in his equally impactful hit 'Big Fun'. The original - with its nonsensical "brutal with the millimetre" vocal sample, god knows where it's from, though seeming to effortless capture some inexorable facet of the German psyche - sounds as great as ever, though it also comes backed by a new extended remix from Knight on the B.

Review: Back after a two year hiatus, French party promoters Pisica present the third release on their label arm, which has previously brought the likes of Cojoc, Timekeeper and Mihai Pol. The Highway features everyone's favourite duo Oden & Fatzo with the early Underground Resistance vibes of 'Queen Of The Highway' followed by the Saar & Mryn's hypnotic back room dub 'Since The Beginning' on side A. Review: Oliver Dollar knows a thing or two about making catchy house grooves and sourcing infectious samples. He's done it many times before and now does the same with Mike Agent X Clarke feat D13 for the Spot Lite label. 'Body Talk' is a funky house number with rolling drums and steamy vocal throughout. Lush strings light up the backdrop and Detroit's finest Dez Andres remixes on the flip. His signature off-beat drums bring the deepness to a jazzy house version and then a demo mix is more raw to close.

Omar S/Norm Talley - "Muggy Detroit Heat" (5:56)
Norm Talley/Moodymann - "Jus Hangin" (feat Charlotte OC - mashed up by D'Julz) (7:21)
Review: There is a heavyweight selection of names on this first release from Norm Talley's promising new label Upstairs Asylum. Firstly, the man himself is a Motor City heavyweight who links with fellow luminary Omar S on the opener 'Muggy Detroit Heat.' It's an intense and steamy house track that bristles with raw melody. On the flip, French house icon D'Julz reworks a tune by Norm in cahoots with the one and only Moodymann. This one is all cuddly chords, romanic vocal chops and warm, rough edged house beats for those cosy basements.

Interferon - "Blasting Soul" (edit) (7:44)

Organisation - "Call" (6:13)
Review: London-based Japanese artist Junki Inoue founded Saisei last year with a stunning trio of releases featuring Kino-Moderno, COLOGNe and Suzukiski. Now the label sets out a more comprehensive mission statement for the sound they're exploring with this six-deep VA release featuring return appearances as well as some new faces. The overarching sound is one of 90s-flavoured techno with a melodic, melancholic quality as beautifully demonstrated by Palomatic on the stunning 'Under The Ground'. Interferon has enough punch packed into 'Blasting Soul' to stand up to some of the foundational Detroit techno gear, but crucially it's got plenty of heart to match its weighty impact. If you want to get a handle on how Saisei is progressing, or just need some fresh techno with soul and smarts, be sure to nab one of these gems.

Review: Robert Owens is absolutely one of the voices of his generation. He has lent his tender tones to more classic tracks than you could possibly mention and he continues to do so nowadays with a wholeness generation of producer who want a touch go his authenticity. He has recently achieved another career milestone with a superbly poignant new single that comes with sublime remixes. DJ Spinna's re-flip adds his usual sense of soul and Adeen Records label head Camille then brings some South African Amapiano vibes. Review: Theo Parrish and Marcellus Pittman's collaborations run deep, from those seminal Essential Selections 12"s some 20 years ago through to the T.O.M Project with Omar S, the 3 Chairs super group and on and on. In the usual Sound Signature style, a new link-up between the two Detroit legends arrives with a minimum on fanfare, just a killer jam with all the grit and soul you'd hope for from this pair. The drum levels push and pull in the mix from red line pressure to back seat driving, while a mellow blur of soul sampling comes calling through the mist until the titular low end glues everything together. It's understated and casual brilliance, everything a Sound Signature club drop should be.

Review: Theo Parrish teams up with Maurissa Rose again on a rare if not completely unprecedented outing that is pure soul magic rather than the dancefloor spells Parrish normally casts. It's a quite the classy outing, as Rose goes full pelt over tinkling percussion and hip-hop beats, showing that every inch of her reputation is totally deserved. Fans of the pair's previous single, 'This Is For You', will find this more coneventional in a 70s classic soul way, but even more spectactular.

Review: Famously returning to the game he was part of right back in the late 80s, Brian Power released his first album last year at the age of 54. Now back with his first new material since then, he's not messing around. Featuring long standing Muthafunka Marc Evans, "Falling Back Into Love" is a sprightly sunny side soulful house gem loaded with timeless appeal and emotion. Can't Get You (club mixx) (8:58)
Can't Get You (Maxxi mix) (8:30)
Review: Matt Edwards has been in a nostalgic mood of late, thinking back to the start of his now long-running Radio Slave project. That began with an unofficial (but widely played) rework of Kylie Minogue smash 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head', and it's that tune - and his unreleased version of it - that inspired this floor-filling, mind-mangling ear worm. The A-side 'Club Mix', a nine-minute throb-job powered forwards by Giorgio Moroder style bass, snappy house drums and rich organ stabs, boasts snippets of vocal courtesy of Sylvester-style American singer Michael Loves Michael, and sounds every bit as alluring as Edwards' infamous bootleg take. The flip-side 'Maxxi Version' features all of Michael Loves Michael's vocals and sits somewhere between sleazy underground synth-pop and sparkling, revivalist Italo-disco. Two ace takes on a stone-cold pop classic that sound fabulous when played on meaty club soundsystems.

Review: The GLBDOM label is on a roll and we don't want it to stop. As was the last with the seance EP, this one is a various artists' affair pressed on nice heavy vinyl to match the heavy sounds. Ollie Rant opens with the quirky melodic leads and sleazy deep house loops of 'Aaaww Yeh' before Manuold brings some Chicago bump and grind on 'Roots.' The hats and drums are perfectly raw and lead you 'Deeper Underground' and into the jacked-up hands of Yann Polewka. Last of all comes some cheeky garage swing and swagger courtesy of DAN T's' nice dry 'Hold Me'.

Review: Inhale Exhale Records return with their seance virus artists EP and it is one that will appeal to anyone who has any love whatsoever for house music. Raoul's 'Vae Victis' is first up to get a remix and that is from Luvless who brings modern power with old school dreaminess. Tilman is next up with an Atmospheric Mix of Marc Brauner's 'The Feeling' which has potent 90s vibes and Soela teams up with her partner in crime Module One for a super chunky groove to close the a-side in style. Eddie C is the standout on the flip side with a suer funky rework of 'Heads Up High' while Denyl Brook brings some peak time power to his interpretation of Shaka's 'Overminded.'

White Isle Memories (Ridney Sunset reprise)
Review: Paharas Musica is a new label out of Spain that kicks off with a single served up four different ways. It is a truly blissed out and Balearic one to start with as the Summa remix of 'White Isle Memories' offers just that, even if you have never actually been to the island itself. The house is deep, the melodies sun kissed and Latin and the vocals sublime. An extended mix slows things down and drapes even more heartfelt chords over the top and then the Inner Spirit rework layers in extra melodies to a more driving version with potent bass. The Ridney Sunset reprise is the most laidback of the lot.

Interstellar (Matisa remix) (6:44)
Review: Two genuine rising stars collaborate here for the first time, as Semi Delicious label founder Demi Riquisimo joins forces with Japan-born, Bristol-based Manami. The duo opt to start in thrillingly positive and tuneful fashion on 'Sugar Snap', where Japanese-influenced melodic lead lines, spacey chords and jaunty organ stabs ride above a surging, tech-tinged house groove, before continuing the full-throttle star-gazing flavour on 'Interstellar'. Over on the flip, both tracks are given the remix treatment. Baldo turns 'Sugar Snap' into a bleeping, acid-propelled slab of hallucinatory neo-trance, while Matisa reaches for chunky organ bass, jumpy female vocal samples and fizzing electronics on a vintage UKG-influenced revision of 'Interstellar'.

Review: London-based Italian Stefano Ritteri (Viaggio Recordings) is up next for number 32 of Shir Khan presents Black Jukebox. 'Slow Tripping' is a neon-lit affair, followed by the 'tribal' vibe of 'Donna', a collaboration with Mytron that sounds reminiscent of something legend Bepe Lodda would have played at Typhoon club back in the day. It collects together some of the biggest and most widely heard tunes of 2022 across two sides of wax. First up is the summer banger 'Rise Up' from Harry Romero & Inaya Day which dropped in June and was never far from a big moment. Come Home (6:03)
Breathe (5:56)
Cut You Down (5:26)
Breathe (Deepchord Ocean remix) (7:14)
Review: Deepchord label co-founder Mike Schommer is lesser known than his partner Rod Modell, but this new EP on Greyscale could well even things out a little. His third solo EP is a tender dub techno lullaby with distinctive vocals from Milly James. On "Come Home," the dubbed out chords ripple to infinity while James' angelic vocal lingers long in the air above, then "Breathe" slows things right down to a crawl for even deeper listening. "Cut You Down" is impressively cavernous then Deepchord remixes "Breathe" into a frosty and late night roller.

Disco Goodies Vol 3

Scruscru & Meowsn - "Your K"
Hotmood - "Hard Feelings"
Lowres - "Slishish"
Erik Ellmann - "Tribal Disco"
Review: The sixth salvo on Sundries sees the Russian label offer up a third serving of 'Disco Goodies'. Rising stars ScruScru and Meowsn, fresh from the release of a fine collaborative album, get things going via the rubbery, electric piano-smothered deep disco-house bounce of 'Your K' - all chunky beats, swirling strings and dazzling Rhodes solos - before scene stalwart Hotmood blur the boundaries between original production and re-editing on the sparkling, piano-sporting disco-goes-sample house excellence of 'Hard Feelings'. Over on side B, Lowres wraps some low-slung disco samples around a killer bassline and snappy drum machine beats on the heady and hedonistic 'Slishish', while Erik Ellman's 'Tribal Disco' is a beefed-up, full-throttle disco-house translation of a lesser-known 10970s discoid gem

Hummus Dealer (5:41)
Bro'ccoli Lasagna (5:36)
Review: Scruscru and Mike Fot's first Spliff Jamz EP, released by SB Jamz back in September 2021, was a fine collected of blazed beats, blunted two-step gems, dusty downtempo treats and yawning deep house workouts. Happily, this welcome sequel is every bit as inspired as its predecessors and sees the weed-loving Russian twosome further explore the potential of deep house/two-step garage fusion. While they do make room for a dash of deliciously deep, hazy and melodious electro-not-electro (closing cut 'Bro'coli Lasagne'), for the most part they're peppering hot-stepping UK garage beats and basslines with colourful chords, weighty bass, jazzy motifs, quirky samples and boogie-influenced synth sounds. It's a hugely alluring proposition.

Chinwah (Big DJs) (6:34)
I Know U (Swankout Ready 2 Rave mix) (5:14)
Review: Shadow Child and Mark Archer are two titans of the UK underground who have also very much made their mark on the world stage, though with quite different sounds. Here they find some sweet middle ground with a fierce new three tracker on Food Music. It opens up with the throwback rave energy and belting diva vocals of 'I Know U' and gets even bigger with 'Chinwah (Big DJs)', a cantering big room house cut with throwback stabs. The best of the lot is saved for last when 'I Know U' (Swankout Ready 2 Rave mix) erupts on waves of flappy drums and rich rave synths.

Simple Request - "Amour Deep" (5:13)
Milk & Honey - "Chi Train" (6:40)
Armless Kid - "Night Ride" (5:45)
Roy Vision - "What's Your Name" (8:09)
Review: After building up a nice head of steam with its first few releases, French label Groovence now starts a new series, Amour Deep, with volume number one. It's a various artists affair that kicks off with the deep and sensuous sounds of Moonee's 'Amour Deep' (feat Simple Request) which has swirling and romantic pads and a great r&b vocal sample. Milk & Honey picks up the pace with the more raw and bumpy 'Chi Train' and Armless Kid goes deep into an electro workout complete with bittersweet piano chords on 'Night Ride'. Roy Vision's 'What's Your Name' rounds out the release with a more glitchy and stripped-back house sound for the dub lovers.

Sun Rhythms - "Flowers Festival" (4:18)

VIGI - "I Am You" (5:06)
Monny Me - "The Name Of The Game" (5:35)
Ugly Frankie - "Free Alcohol Shit" (4:32)
Review: St Petersberg's Dobro label is noted not just for the quality and playability of its funky house and disco re-edits, but also for its value for money. This, their seventh release, is another great example, with no less than six floorfillers included on one 12", each bringing their own individual mood to the table. 'Flowers Festival' from Sun Rhythms has throbbing organs and fruity keys, topped off by a gorgeous Russian vocal. DJ Merci's 'Timetable' goes for chunky rave pianos and Fairlight stabs, lending it an 80s Italo-disco feel, before Ground Plane Aerial's 'Transition SP' closes the side with slap bass and stripped down house vibe that echoes some of Roule Records' more accessible moments. Side two VIGI's 'I Am You', is the most memorable of the whole package, with its idiosyncratic female vocal weaving a magical spell around the listener, before we finish off with a double whammy of Monny Me's swirling stringfest 'The Name Of The Game' and the parping horns and strutting groove of Ugly Frankie's 'Free Alcohol Shit', the latter including a bewitching and unexpected piano solo. Great work all round.

Super Flu & Ivan Mas - "It's A House Day" (6:02)
Monkey Safari - "Malmedy" (5:45)
Super Flu & Mar&Mer - "AMA" (5:36)
Review: If you love the sound of Get Physical and similarly anthemic German techno labels, you're going to love this release on new label Didschn. The label nods to a track Super Flu released back in 2010, which was remixed to great effect by Monkey Safari a couple of years back. Now Super Flu open proceedings on this new release in partnership with Ivan Mas on the epic, infectious 'It's A House Day'. Monkey Safari then hop on the B-side for 'Malmedy', which hits a sweet spot near the mid-00s melodic minimal you'd hear from the likes of Gabriel Ananda. Then Super Flu and Mar+Mer link up for 'AMA', a sensual, emotive hands-in-the-air moment to move the masses.

Review: The entrancing tribal house groove of Jerome Sydenham, Fatima Njai's and percussionist Mario Punchard's Kraftwerk channeling 'Trans Afro Express' is one of this year's biggest tracks for Rekids, which now receives a series of impressive reworks by the biggest names on the scene. Running Back's Gerd Janson delivers a sunny and blissful rework in his signature neon-lit disco style on the A side of the disc. Over on the flip, it's over to the master of minimalism - none other than Ricardo Villalobos - who takes the track deep into the afterhours with his heady makeover delivered in his idiosyncratic style.
