Attack The Dancefloor Vol 16
  1. Akabu - "Ride The Storm" (feat Linda Clifford - Saison remix) (7:21)
  2. The Love Symphony Orchestra - "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" (Dr Packer remix) (7:31)
  3. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - "Everyday" (JN Disco Re-Bump remix) (7:28)
  4. Art Of Tones - "Flower Child" (feat Anduze) (7:01)
Review: Like its numerous predecessors, 16th edition of Z Records' long running "Attack The Dancefloor" series is packed to the rafters with tried and tested dancefloor treats, most of which have never appeared on vinyl before. First up, Saison tackles Akabu's 2001 classic "Ride The Storm", turning it into a deep, bouncy and rubbery chunk of lilting, string-drenched house goodness, before Dr Packer delivers a subtly tooled-up take on The Love Symphony Orchestra's grandiose and sexually-charged 1978 disco classic "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". Label head honcho Joey Negro provides a superb deep disco rework of one of his own productions, the Sunburst Band's 2004 summer sing-along "Everyday", while Art of Tones' "Flower Child" is a flash-fried, disco-funk romp laden with superb lead vocals from Anduze.

  1. Marc Brauner - "I Got What U Want" (7:21)
  2. Marc Brauner - "I Got What U Want" (Tender Games version) (5:35)
  3. Tender Games - "Energy" (7:14)
  4. Marc Brauner - "One Night In Paris" (6:18)
Review: New label Nostalgics was founded with an admirable aim, namely to, "take the mood and sounds of the past and present and create music for the future". That ethos is certainly evident on this opening EP from founder Marc Brauner and pal Tender Games. Brauner's opening gambit, 'I Got What U Want', sits somewhere between vintage US deep house, turn-of-the-90s Italian house and the futurist shimmer of early UK tech-house. Tender Games delivers a sonically denser and more bustling interpretation of that track, before offering-up a cut of his own: the fluid pianos, shimmering synths and proto-house grooves of 'Energy'. Brauner returns to round things off with 'One Night In Paris', a classic-sounding deep house number reminiscent of the material showcased on the My Love is Underground label.

The V EP

  2. Epiphany (4:22)
  3. Euphoria (4:22)
  4. Gifted (4:44)
  5. Karma (3:36)
Review: In the late 1980s and early '90s, twins Rheji and Ronald Burrell did more to define the sound of deep house than almost any other producer bar Larry Heard. It's for this reason that this new EP from Rheji under the Utopia Project alias - one of many monikers he and his brother adopted back in the day - is such big news. The five tracks are totally fresh, rather than archival cuts, but are every bit as magic as the music Burrell released all those years ago. Expect tactile basslines, classic deep house rhythms, huggable melodies, chiming motifs, sun-bright piano riffs and immersive chords, all created using the same combination of synthesizers and drum machines that he and his brother once used to craft pioneering NYC house jams. Essential!

The Way It Goes (12" reeditado)
Cat: KCT 1199. Rel: 06 Nov 20
  1. The Way It Goes (Chris Stussy remix) (8:08)
  2. The Way It Goes (Chris Stussy dub) (6:38)
Review: A few years back Kerri Chandler joined forces with Troy Denari to deliver "The Way It Goes", a superbly soulful club cut based on the legendary house producer's iconic 1993 workout "Track 1". Here it gets a new slant courtesy of Chris Stussy, a Dutch producer with releases on some of the world's most noted deep house labels to his name. Stussy makes great use of Denari's slick, soulful vocal on his A-side remix, which showcase some spacey, echoing synthesizer motifs and the most jazzy and squelchy synth-bass part known to man, woman or child. He toughens things up and raises the intensity a notch on the flipside dub mix, which naturally makes greater use of the spacey synth motifs and a few other tech-tinged musical flourishes.

We'll Sea Part 4 (hand-stamped blue marbled vinyl 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: MIR 018. Rel: 04 Nov 20
  1. Das Komplex - "Galaxy" (9:26)
  2. Tecwaa - "Cosmic Dust" (3:05)
  3. Achim Maerz - "Nebula" (5:46)
  4. Jacques Bon - "Sky Waves" (5:30)
Review: Landing on a hand-stamped, blue marble and limited edition 12" are four more deep and dubbed out house tunes from the latest instalment of Mireia's We'll Sea series. Das Komplex kicks off with a serious aqueous rhythm drenched in waves of synth with a pained vocal sample that really makes it stick in your mind. Tecwaa knocks it back even further to a slow motion underwater dub current that gently moves you to a state of bliss. 'Nebula' from Achim Maerz is more upright and upbeat, with bright chords shining through the vast groove caverns as neat chords dance up top. 'Sky Waves' closes out in warm, rough edged lo-fi deep house fashion.

  2. Matteo - "Fusions Of Love" (6:30)
  3. The Hush - "Speed Light" (6:53)
Review: A timely arrival while certain governments have basically said 'what's the point of art?' Matteo's Point Of Art unleashes another reminder of why we do what we do. Following his own launch release earlier this year Matteo now brings some friends along for this up-tempo V/A ride. Turin new-gen queen Denaila takes the lead with a bouncy acid party starter before Matteo gets contemplative and silky on the Fabrice Lig flavoured 'Fusions Of Love' and the mysteriously monikered newcomer / secret alias The Hush brings the EP to woozy close with whimsical bubbling sines. Point proved.

  3. Finest Wear - "That 90's Groove" (6:46)
  4. ColorJaxx - "One Night In The City" (4:44)
Review: Over the last decade, Large Records has concentrated largely on digital releases, though their occasional vinyl outings - and specifically the "Wax Weapons" series of compilation style EPs - are rarely less than essential. Volume three kicks off via the chunky, bass-heavy bounce and fizzing, Todd Edwards style cut-up melodic snippets of Scott Diaz and Timmy P's "True Blue", before Never Dull takes us further towards classic deep house territory courtesy of the bustling brilliance of "United, Under One Roof". Elsewhere, Finest Wear's "That '90s Groove" is an ear-pleasing slab of 1990s U.S house revivalism, while Colorjaxx's energetic closer "One Night In The City" adds Mike Dixon/Greenskeepers style filtered jazz samples to a chunky Chi-town beat.

  2. Acos CoolKAs - "Miracle" (feat Metropoliz) (9:01)
  3. Tek Killa - "The Beach" (6:04)
Review: Moscow's Deepology Special are back with the third edition in their Four Seasons Series. It features Barcelona's Soul Minority who provides a sensual and evocative rework of Elastic Sound's 'Moscow After Autumn Rain' on the A side, which is decorated with infectious disco vocal loops and creamy Rhodes keys. On the flip, the irresistible mood music continues with veteran producers Konstantin Atomas & Vasiliy Basalaev aka Acos CoolKAs with 'Miracle' (featuring Metropoliz), and the life-affirming Detroit hi-tech soul vibes of Tek Killa's 'The Beach' which only appeared on digital back in 2009 - and we can see why it was worthy of a vinyl reissue.

Review: It may have taken the best part of six months, but Glenn Underground has finally delivered his first new music of 2020. The Chicago house legend is in fine form on "Shake That Body", a warm and jazzy chunk of deep house/disco fusion rich in tasty instrumentation and topped off by a fine female lead vocal courtesy of newcomer T.H.I.C.K. It's accompanied on the A-side by the superb "Dubbl" version, which sees Glenn Underground strip the track back to a killer dub disco groove before bringing back the keys, acoustic guitars, spacey synths and snippets of T.H.I.C.K's vocal. Over on the flip you'll find a seductive "Remix" that subtly moves the track closer to deep, soulful house territory.

  5. Scruscru - "Surfin' On Hokusai's Waves" (5:04)
  6. Buzz Compass - "That Nighter" (4:49)
Review: Belarus' Iner launches a new label with a strong cast of international names all pushing a deep and distinguished strain of house music for those who want soul and invention in equal measure. Tilman is up first with 'Sweet Dreamer', a mellow, looped up roller. Sune's 'Flutes' takes a breezier approach shaped out by fluttering jazz funk motifs. Yann Polewka celebrates the sweetest Philly strings and some classic vocal licks for a disco-infused burner you can't help but love. Iner himself keeps things loose and organic on the wonderful 'Respectfull Kind Music', while Scruscru goes for a sleek approach to chopped up funky house. That leaves it to Buzz Compass to get heady and hazy with the bass-leaning cuts coursing through 'That Nighter'.

  4. The Blaxploited Orchestra - "Explicit"
Review: Spanish label Mate are back with more excellent house cuts from different corners of the scene. The endlessly prolific Javonntte is in control on the A side, sounding as iconic as ever with the rousing thump of "Quantom". "Mr DJ" is a more soulful track with a catchy vocal hook you'll be humming to yourself for weeks after hearing it. On the flipside, Simon Garcia's The Blaxploited Orchestra is in heavy edit mode on "Ready To Go", bringing a full-frequency funk and sizzling house drums to the fore with a classic sample or two. "Explicit" has a lower tempo, allowing even more space to sink into the pocket and feel the groove from start to finish.

Review: The first release on Kamarads pulls together a solid mix of established tech house figureheads for a classy, versatile set of club tracks. Politics Of Dancing goes up first with 'Ote', a deep and rugged groover geared towards hypnotism and total immersion. Djebali follows up with an equally stealthy roller that will appeal to those who like it stripped back. Terence: Terry takes things in a swirling, trippy direction with the afters-ready 'Eastern Boy' and Stephan Bazbaz finishes up with a gorgeous, lilting deep house lullaby to soothe the weary raver's soul.

When we're allowed out to play, however, this Romance Rmxd EP will be a go-to for those who like deep, subtle, warm house grooves to build a vibe. Superpitcher's take on 'Relase' is a far-sighted and dreamy track with new age ambiance permeating the supple drums and bass. German countryman Jacob Korn is more lively with his work, flipping 'Drop Wet Gorgeous' into a dazzling slow motion disco churner with cosmic energy and trance-inducing chord work.

Review: The cult and iconic Full Pupp label has been at the vanguard of the Scadi-sound for 15 years now. From indie licked to cosmic disco via melodic house and deep techno, the label has its own take on everything and this second anniversary marking EP is another rich gem. Telephones open with a humid jam that blurts genre-borders, Marius Vareid goes beautifully deep and late night on "Acidus" with its gently braking waves lit only by the moon, and Christian Engh pumps the party with his punchy and trippy "Schmoo". The boss himself Prins Thomas comes through with a disco house heater to close the party with style.

Review: More playable goodness arrives from Yoyaku's deep and dubby house offshoot, Joule Imprint, with previously unheard artist Teleruic at the controls. On the A-side you'll find two hugely attractive original productions: "Pulsalii Profunde", where tactile synth bass and melodious dream house elements cluster around a squeezable tech-house groove, and the hypnotic late night throb of "Dincolo De Oriezont", which is notable for its use of heavy analogue bass and rolling intergalactic riffs. Turn to the flipside for Samuel Andre Madsen's SAM Remix of "Pulsalii Profunde", which adds a little chunky late night bounce to an otherwise ultra deep and spacey tech-house take.

Review: Thomas Xu tends not to release much music, but when he does it tends to be musically rich, rhythmically complex and very, very good. That's certainly the case with "Places In Time", his second EP on Steady Flight following an inspired 2017 debut on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature imprint. There's much to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the heavily analogue, synthesizer-powered, intergalactic jazz-funk looseness of "Easin", and the slipped 21st century instrumental space-jazz of "Tired A Being Tired (What Are We Here For)", to the densely layered, piano-driven ambience of "Promise 2", and the hard-to-pigeonhole eccentricity of closing cut "Let's Go See Roy".

Review: Since 2013 Tijn (not to be confused with J. Tijn) has been issuing a steady stream of high grade minimal and tech house for labels like Decay, Memoria, Moss Co and more recently Vuew. Now he comes to Aesthetic for a varied EP that leads in with the dusky, blue-hued tones of "Waves" - a moment for true immersion and introspection. By way of contrast, "CC" captures the energy of classic mid 00s minimal a la labels like Cynosure - all bugging samples hopping around a swinging groove - and we can't get enough of it. "Sundayyzz" takes things in a spookier direction, keeping that stripped back shuffle but holding down a more mellow energy compared to "CC".

Review: Shall Not Fade boss KW has decided to launch a new "Season Series" sub-label featuring "music associated with the season of release" and matching coloured vinyl. Fittingly, the inaugural release delivers suitably sunny, summery deep house jams from Fine regular Tilman, naturally pressed on to marbled, sky-blue vinyl. Musically there's much to enjoy across the five tracks, from the jazzy, sample-heavy bounce of bumpin' opener "Nature Yourself" and the sweet, carnival-ready loop-house hedonism of "Photon Dust", to the drowsy, blue-eyed soul sampling afternoon warmth of "Just A Motion Away" and the yearning, flute-sporting dancefloor dreaminess of "Blurred Chase".

  1. Morning Factory (Dubplate) (7:32)
Review: There are few more iconic or influential deep house cuts than Ron Trent and Chez Damier's 1995 collaboration "Morning Factory". Reportedly inspired by the very particular vibe of early mornings at important early '90s NYC club Sound Factory, the track has remained a staple of late-night DJ sets for the last quarter of a century. Here the track gets the reissue treatment in the superior unabridged, nine-minute-plus "dubplate" mix form. For those that have not heard it, "Morning Factory" provides a near perfect fusion of spaced-out early morning chords, trippy electronic motifs, tactile synth-bass, swirling noises and softly shuffling, hypnotic beats. Basically, it's one of the best deep house tracks ever made and if you don't own a copy already, you should grab one of these ASAP!

Based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jonathan Fowlkes builds on years immersed in production and performance to deliver this pristine slab of machine soul. For those who want to hear the soul, funk and boogie roots in their electronic music, this record has exactly what you need. 'Terrains No.1' sports an electro framework and dreamy synth strokes oozing sophistication and funk in equal measure. 'Terrains No.2' skips along in a more sprightly fashion, shuffling in all the right places, while 'Terrains No.3' leans in on a firmer house groove. 'Terrains No.4' rounds the EP out on another immaculately crafted groove, maintaining the rich chord structures and glistening synth tones that make this whole EP so damn satisfying.

Review: 'Wanna Dance' is the new jam by deep house heavyweight Sean McCabe (Good Vibrations) and Last Forever chief Turbojazz. Said to be conceived during the lockdown period, the track recalls the energy of classic Detroit deep house and even features one of the city's favourite voices in the form of Javonntte. On the flip, the spiritual vibe of Moondance's rework calls to mind the work of Motor City legend Alton Miller, while EVM128 aka Evermean Beats really soaks up the vibe of his new hometown - London - on his nu-jazz broken beat perspective that would make even Kaidi Tatham stand up and notice.

Review: The 30th EP on Omena is suitably special for such an occasion. The label bring in Twovi aka Vito Loperfido to the family, and he is someone who has been putting out interesting house since debuting on Bosconi in 2017, with follow ups on the legendary Inner Balance label overseen by Chicago great Chez Damier. The Italian native continues to innovate here with a house sound that is deep yet dynamic, melodic and dreamy. His drums are loose and funky, the sax lines bring some jazz tinges and a remix from Contours adds another dimension to what is a classy house EP.

Review: Tunisia's Azu Tiwaline is very much at the start of her production career, with her only previous outing being a frankly stunning 12" on Bristol's Livity Sound label. That tells you where she's at musically, pivoting between techno structures and more adventurous, system-ready rhythmic trysts and bassweight attitude. That's boiling things down a bit, and fortunately this album on IOT Records expands her repertoire at an early stage to reveal a mightily talented producer with a depth and clarity to her productions to match the freshness of her sonic concepts. Engaging, atmospheric and dynamic throughout, this is all the proof you need that Azu Tiwaline is one to watch.

  2. We're Where We Were (part II) (13:05)
Review: Although this is Tornado Wallace's Mule Musiq debut, the music contained on it is not brand new - though it is pretty much on known. 'We Are Where We Are' first appeared in 2018 on a Japan-only promo CD. Back then, it was presented as one continuous, 32-minute track. For its' vinyl debut, the decidedly Balearic and psychedelic offering has been split into two parts. Each is hugely atmospheric and evocative, with the Berlin-based Australian offering non-stop, ambient house style suites that layer evocative instrumentation - twinkling pianos, pulsing electronic noises, jazzy guitars, delay-laden synth sounds and so on - and crackling field recordings atop sparse, lo-fi drum machine beats and dubbed-out basslines.

Review: Swiss trio Trinidad appear to have spent much of the last year dreaming of the sparkling white beaches, sweltering heat, cooling sea breezes and tropical fauna of the Caribbean. At least that's what we got from the delightfully summery and colourful vibes of Palm Trees & Thirty Degrees, their self-released debut album. It sees them offer up a wealth of warming, colourful and melodious deep house and tech-house grooves, onto which they've added a mixture of French Caribbean instrumentation, steel pan sounds, occasional nods to reggae, atmospheric field recordings and plenty of trippy late-night electronics. It's an ear-pleasing musical blend that we'd recommend investigating further.
