  1. Step Into Light (4:38)
  2. Reflect & Heal (5:03)
Review: New year, new white label vinyl that you need in your life. This one comes from Adam "Admin" Wickens who is a lovely chap and fine DJ and producer who we havent heard from for a while. In the past he has impressed on Kolour Limited and Banoffee Pies and now goes deep across a pair of jazz tinged deep house gems. 'Step Into Light' has a louche beat and piano lounge chords over the top of the shakers, dusty hits and mellifluous pads. 'Reflect & Heal' then speed sup little but is just as soft, cuddly, and richly melodic for those late night sessions.

Review:  Party days can't be that far away now, and Cardiology continue to have you covered with some of the choicest slabs in the edit game. This time it's C Da Afro on the buttons, shining bright after a massively productive 2020 in which he slipped out no less than five records. He's clearly not short on material to get busy on the slice and dice with, given the quality of the gear he's presenting on this new 12". As you'd expect for Cardiology the tracks aren't that easily trainspotted, ranging from the insanely catchy disco delights of 'Hustle' to the housed-up funk of 'Hold Up'. It's serious music for serious heads, but with that universal party starting appeal that any self-respecting disco edit should have.

  1. Climax 1 (6:16)
  2. Climax 2 (6:19)
  3. Track 1 (6:57)
  4. Track 2 (5:52)
Review: Kerri Chandler has made a lot of terrific records over the years, but few are better than 1993's "Atmosphere EP", which in our opinion contains some of the most on-point "garage-house" (as it would have been called then) ever made. This yellow vinyl reissue proves our point: you'll struggle to find a more infectious fusion of New Jersey organ stabs, sparkling piano riffs and bumpin' club grooves than "Climax 1", or the tougher dub mix "Climax 2" for that matter (a revision made all the more alluring by Chandler's use of heady African vocal samples). The goodness continues on the flip, where the jazzy and immersive deep house warmth of "Track 1" is quickly followed by the Larry Heard-inspired brilliance of "Track 2" - a kind of tribute to "Can You Feel It" that features some dizzying piano solos from the hugely talented Chandler. In a word: essential.

Review: Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell's latest full-length excursion is, in typical style, a little different from your average artistic full-length. Instead of showcasing the spiritual house maestro's completed productions, it instead offers glimpses of familiar favourites, B-sides and deep album cuts in various stages of completion. That may not sound appealing on paper, but it genuinely is. For starters, Clausell is a fine musician, and many of the showcased "manifestations" are effectively early, stripped-back takes laden with a mixture of fluid and jazzy piano solos, soulful vocals, spacey synthesizer chords and acoustic guitars. Some cuts are inspired ambient soundscapes, while others are breezier, lighter dancefloor numbers underpinned by a variety of African and Latin inspired deep house rhythms.

Attenuator (12" reeditado)
Cat: PLE 654026. Rel: 19 Jan 21
  1. Attenuator (Carl Craig version) (8:53)
  2. Attenuator (Moritz Von Oswald dub) (6:53)
Review: Carl Craig and Moritz Von Oswald, two of techno's undisputed legends, team up on this fine release for the former's esteemed Planet E imprint. The first production to emerge from a series of studio sessions in Berlin and Detroit (and with more to come in the future) 'Attenuator' was originally produced together, but this two sided single sees them deliver their own distinct take on the material. The Carl Craig version on the A side is as epic as you could imagine from the veteran of the Motor City's second wave - proper 'hi-tech jazz' if we've ever heard it. On the flip, the Mortiz Von Oswald dub gets deep, dark and introspective, much in the vein of his seminal Basic Channel material.

  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

INNATE 004
INNATE 004 (12")
Cat: INN8 004. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Aroy Dee - "Leegte" (5:29)
  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet" (7:26)
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface" (6:23)
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit" (5:56)
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

Reckless Eyes (hand-stamped 1-sided 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 06. Rel: 22 Dec 20
  1. Reckless Eyes (6:56)
Review: The Digwah label deals in tech-house reworks of well-loved old cuts and the results are always well on point. They don't come on a regal basis but when they do they are well worth snapping up - and often sell out in quick fashion. The subject of this latest one is the one and only Sade, whose buttery vocals get layered into a nice deep, propulsive house grove that comes with none hues and last night chord work to sooth any floor. Yet again this is another essential 12" from this label, and as ever it's hand stamped one sided affair.

Review: 'Love Can't Turn Around' is one of the most enduring and pioneering hits in house music. It's an unabashed anthem with impassioned lyrics that drip with covert sexuality thanks to the forceful delivery of Darryl Pandy. His passion is offset by the sweetness of the backing singers, while crashing hits, big stabs and horn leads all power it along and cannot fail to get you in a sweat. Here it comes in all its definitive forms allowing you to serve it up however you see fit. Whichever version you chose, damage will ensue when you drop this one.

Review: Fred Everything is a long assured producer and a hallmark of real quality grooves. The Atjazz Record Company is similarly highly regarded, and for good reason, so this is a coming together well worthy of your attention. Opener 'Alone' is the sort of gorgeously lush and languid deep house groove that is perfect for cosy spaces. 'Phoenix' then ups the ante with delightfully skipping beats and perc, smeared pads and a cuddly vibe. 'Alone' then gets two remixes and the first, Po-lar-i-ty, is riddled with funky motifs and jazz keys and the second is a loopy tool of dusty beats.

Review: On its initial release in 1994, "Sceneries Not Songs" became deep house legend Larry Heard's first solo album under his given name. At the time, it caused quite a stir on the electronic underground, in part because it saw the Chicago veteran showcase the depth and variety of his musical personality whilst retaining the emotive dreaminess and jazzy inflections that had always been a big part of his work. As this much-needed vinyl reissue proves, it remains a stunning album. Highlights include the sparkling synthesizers, slo-mo grooves and twinkling pianos of "Tahiti Dusk", the classic Heard deep house warmth of "Midnight Movement", the head-nodding trip-hop-goes-ambient jazz flex of "Summertime Breeze" and the luscious beauty of bonus cut "Question of Time".

The Rhythm EP Part 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  2. Don’t Go (Ease Up George Flip) (5:12)
  3. U Want Wot? (5:38)
  4. Who Knows (VIP mix) (4:33)
Review: Rhythm Vibe keep the old-skool garage house flavour alive and well on this absolutely essential drop from Herb Rhythm, riding the kind of uptempo 4x4 flex that joins the dots between the scene's house roots and the speed garage that came after. The A side kicks off with the impeccable 'Don't Go', which rides the same vocal sample as FCL's deep house burner 'Lets Go' from 2010. Ease Up George gets busy on a remix of the track which injects some classy dubby shimmers and 2-step flex into the scenario, and it really works. 'U Want Wot?' is another tight and bumping joint with rich chords and oodles of soul, while 'Who Knows (VIP Mix)' gets things swinging good and proper without getting losing the smoother vibe that hangs over the whole EP.

Review: In Fields ditches his usual dark disco flavours and leans towards a more ambient sound on a perfectly contemplative new album. It's no wonder this is the direction he's taken given how we're all still mostly trapped at home with nothing to do but day dream, but rather than being a half assed effort he really pulls it off across eight excellent cuts. Airy pads, darker arps, subtle and supple rhythms are all present and correct as you are cast adrift in space at some moments and taken on a more inward journey at others. A fine record indeed.

Cat: JOULE 01. Rel: 13 Jan 21
  1. Bright (6:13)
  2. Rear (8:49)
  3. Bright (Varhat remix) (9:58)
Review: Further proof of the current rude health of Paris's deep house scene arrives in the shape of another rock solid EP from prolific producer Mickael Jeanerret, AKA Janeret. The Bright E.P more than lives up to its' name, with the title track delivering a near perfect blend of bushy-eyed beats, ethereal pads, deep space riffs and fluttering, manipulated vocal samples. The EP's other original cut, "Rear", boasts similarly drifting chords, but also a tech-tinged beat pattern that's as bold and funky as they come. Rising star Varhat does a terrific job remixing "Bright", retaining Jeanerret's dub techno-inspired textures, whilst adding his own Syclops-inspired synth bassline.

Review: Red Ember Records main man Ewan Jansen may have been serving up dusty deep house and tactile dancefloor workouts since the late 1990s, but he's not released many full-length excursions. In fact, this outing Butter Sessions is his first longform release for nearly 16 years. It's a proper album, too, with the Perth-based producer using the opportunity to experiment with different rhythms, tempos and sounds whilst retaining his usual melodiousness and keen sense of atmosphere. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, off-kilter opener 'Mussel Hustle', the acid-flecked, early morning dancefloor fever dream 'Kooka', the melodious electro sea breeze of 'Watertable' and the mid-80s Japanese synth-pop/electrofunk eccentricity of 'Proteus vs Yoshimitsu'.

  1. Gumbo (9:52)
  2. Custard Gannet (6:03)
  3. Gumbo (Blooty mix) (6:01)
Review: Here's a welcome surprise: a reissue of one of the most revered records in the back catalogue of sadly departed Sheffield deep house imprint Toko. This 1997 gem is actually an all-star affair, with Klarky Cat (a reference to legendary satirical show Brass Eye) being a collaboration between Chris Duckenfield, Toko bosses Alec Greenhough and Paul Ingall (better known as Attaboy) and influential, overlooked Manchester producer Si Brad. In. its original form, "Gumbo" mixes the wavy, loved-up dreaminess of classic deep house with the organ sounds of U.S garage and the swinging, occasionally glitchy drums of early UK tech-house. It comes backed with a darker, chunkier and more foreboding rework (the mesmerising "Blooty Mix"), and the bright, acid-flecked sunrise giddiness of rather good bonus track "Custard Gannet".

Review: Moscow-based producer Alex Leyfa has been active for the best part of 10 years now, dropping albums on Local Talk and In-Beat-Ween as well as scores of EPs for City Fly, 4Lux, Soundofspeed, G.A.M.M. and many more. Now he's up on Lumberjacks with some choice cuts that show off his instinct for fluttering breakbeats as much as headsy house music, not least on the soaring, smooth delights of 'Good Thing!'. 'Up We Go!' rides another high grade break and chops up plenty of soul samples in the mix too, while 'HEAVY' explores a wilder broken beat terrain where you can almost visualise Leyfa getting creative on the MPC pads. 'My Reflection' completes the set with a seriously grooving house cut replete with loom bird samples and dreamy guitar licks.

Review: When it comes to immersive, atmospheric and slowly unfurling deep house, few producers can match the immaculate output of Will Long. His Long Trax series of albums manages to consistently deliver dancefloor-ready material that's arguably best enjoyed at home with the lights off. This third volume in the series - the first since 2018 - is every bit as alluring as its predecessors. Its' lengthy tracks are becalmed and meditative, with ambient house style spoken word samples and yearning chords stretching out across crunchy, sometimes lo-fi drum machine rhythms and warming, often opaque basslines. As a result, each and every cut - few of which clock in at less than ten minutes - feels like the aural equivalent of a weary, loved-up hug at 5AM (which, to us at least, is definitely a good thing).

  3. Hangin' On A String (12" mix) (5:58)
Review: Put simply, Loose Ends' 1985 hit 'Hangin' On A String' is not only a peerless UK soul classic, but also one of the greatest boogie-era dancefloor cuts full stop. You should really already own a copy, but if you don't, then this South Side reissue should be on your shopping list. Not only does it contain the band's brilliant original extended mix (B2) - a sing-along gem rich in hazy organ sounds, jazzy guitar solos and bustling electro-era beats - but also two celebrated 1992 remixes from Frankie Knuckles. Both are amongst the late, great DJ/producer's finest remixes, with the more instrumental and impeccably loved-up 'Reprise' version, in which Knuckles builds gently before eventually unleashing chorus vocals, being our pick of an incredibly strong pair.

Shapes & Colors Vol 1
Cat: HCM 1036. Rel: 04 Jan 21
  1. Acts 2 & 4 (7:31)
  2. The Plight Of The Square (7:36)
  3. 9 Pound Hammer (10:13)
  4. First Graders (6:25)
Review: Honeycomb Music here offers up the first of Josh Milan's excellent new vinyl series, which is based on the Shapes, Color and Magic EP. It finds the cult producer explore some of the most innovative jazz and dance music rhythms you could wish to hear across just like 'Acts 2 and 4' which are late night and freaky jazz-tech jams of pure quality. 'The Plight Of The Square' slows down to a bubbly groove with loose perc and nice colourful melodic hits and '9 Pound Hammer' brings an epic rock vibe to house, somehow. It's pure Balearic bliss on closer 'First Graders.'

Heads High EP
Heads High EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HH 001. Rel: 04 Jan 21
  1. Darkness Falls (7:56)
  2. Cascade (5:21)
  3. For Your Love (6:13)
  4. Bala (5:57)
Review: Misiu kicks off the Heads High label in style, building on a style first hinted at on an edit 12" for Razor N Tape back in 2016. The mood on 'Darkness Falls' is swooning and romantic, steeped in stirring string refrains, earworm analogue leads and a sweet, disco-licked groove. 'Cascade' has a more bumping house feel to it, replete with diva vocal hooks and a nagging organ line. 'For Your Love' is the peak time, sun down anthem of the record, dropping in some treasured vocal hooks and tasteful peaks and troughs of energy. The record rolls out on the lilting charms of 'Bala', which uses a more eclectic palette to deliver a very different feel to the other three tracks and leave the possibilities wide open for Misiu's next move.

Telephone EP (reissue)
Telephone EP (reissue) (12" reeditado) (1 per customer)
Cat: PFG 018. Rel: 22 Dec 20
  1. Forevernevermore (remix) (5:32)
  2. Telephone Blue (4:57)
Review: Second time around for Moodymann's sought after Telephone EP, which first appeared in stores way back in 2001. As with the original pressing, the A-side boasts a typically eccentric, percussively complex and attractive re-make of "Forevernevermore", where twinkling piano motifs and simmering easy listening string samples rise above a dense and bubby rhythm track. At a little over five minutes, it's notably shorter and punchier than the epic original version. Arguably even better is flipside "Telephone Blue", a wonderfully deep and jazzy outing that sees the legendary Detroiter get busy with a Fender Rhodes over a shuffling deep house beat.

Just Doing Me
Cat: MB 004. Rel: 24 Dec 20
  1. Just Doing Me (Terry Hunter club mix) (7:07)
  2. Just Doing Me (Terry Hunter club instrumental) (7:04)
  3. Just Doing Me (Terry Hunter radio mix) (3:57)
Review: Here's something that should excite all those who love disco, boogie and quality house: a brand-new single from living legend Melba Moore, produced and mixed by long-serving Chicago producer Terry Hunter. The latter sets the tone with a pleasingly sunny, up-beat and soulful 'Club Mix' that adds early '80s, Latin disco style horns, drowsy guitars, heady electric piano motifs and Moore's superb vocals to a loose-limbed Philly Soul style dancefloor groove that reminded us of classic MFSB productions. Over on the flip Hunter offers up a quick-fix radio edit and a rather wonderful club instrumental, in which his dazzling Rhodes solos and punchy horn arrangements rightly take centre stage. In a word: superb.

  4. Isaac Prieto - "Late Night" (6:20)
  5. MGUN - "Shadows" (6:51)
Review: After just over two years out of the game, the overlooked Detroit Vinyl Room label - a stable previously responsible for unleashing some superb deep house - has finally sprung back into action. The Collision EP is a multi-artist affair with many must-check highlights, with our picks including the drowsy, tech-tinged late night deep house hypnotism of 'Stick An Move (Cobo Mix)' by Gary Romalis, the distant, jackin'-in-space acid squelch of Jnn Apprl's 'Insecure Alien', the ultra-deep and trippy, early morning haziness of Isaac Prieto's brilliantly odd and angular 'Late Night', and the horizontal, sofa-bound instrumental hip-hop of MGUN's blazed 'Shadows'. Recommended.

  1. Zito Mowa - "Ndo Neta" (6:28)
  2. Replika - "On My Mind" (5:54)
  3. Sune & Vitamin D - "Coastal" (5:11)
  4. Iner - "Awesomeness" (6:10)
Review: After years of quality digital releases, Russian house label Moiss has branched out into the vinyl world with some particularly fruity various artist releases. Last year's excellent Strawberry Jam EP has now been followed up by the Pineapple Jam 12", featuring an all new cast of house hopefuls with plenty to say. Zito Mowa's 'Ndo Neta' and Replika's 'On My Mind' twist up dusty piano samples and lo-fi drums in artful loops that draw you right into their atmospheric sound worlds. Sune & Vitamin D bring a rhythmically snappy but sonically smoky combo to 'Coastal', and 'Awesomeness' by Iner has some fun with a classic Commodores sample and some powerful piano chops.

  3. Saspence (5:45)
  4. Nyte Light (6:07)
Review: House innovator Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers dives deep into his vast and venerated vaults for a new series of retrospective EPs on his own long running label. The tunes selected are either unheard unreleased on this label and first up is a selection that was once considered for the Another Side album that had Ron Wilson free-styling vocals. It's a high class selection of soulful electronic sounds with impassioned volts and tiny synths, ticking wooden hits and deep, spiritual vibes. 'Saspence' is from another dimension, while 'Nyte Light' is a unique acid workout.

  3. Arco (8:02)
  4. Arco (Danceapella) (6:08)
Review: NY Graffiti's imlookin4thedoor is a gritty, dubby, angst-ridden exercise in dance. The inaugural release by Peace Anthem Records features four tracks by the artist. On the A side, two tripped-up, smoke-laden tracks move the needle in hypnotic and hallucinatory fashion. On the B Side, Arco, inspired in equal parts by UK hardcore and the sight of Paolo Soleri's utopian architecture, moves at a glacial pace, scribing a path along the liminal edge of futures past.

  3. Steve O'Sullivan & John Beer - "Breezer" (6:45)
  4. Blue Spirit - "No Suzuki" (5:52)
  5. The Wise Caucasian - "Sac Magique" (6:03)
Review: As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Sushitech has decided to reissue Mosaic Classics, a 2008 collection of late 1990s works from legendary British techno producer Steve O'Sullivan, this time on clear vinyl. If you missed out first time around, it's well worth picking up. Check first the early British tech-house-goes-dub-techno hypnotism of 'Cheques Not Accepted', before admiring the sub-heavy late-night skank of 'Touch Up' and the bongo-rich pleasantness of deep techno roller 'Breezer' (itself a collaboration with John Beer'). Also worth a listen is the chunkier and sweater - but nevertheless spacey - 'No Suzuki', which was originally released under the Blue Spirit alias, and the pumping, stargazing thump of 'Sac Magique' (as Wise Caucasian).

Cat: IIAJ 002. Rel: 12 Jan 21
  1. Chicago (7:16)
  2. Spinnin (7:41)
Review: The second release from the newly emerging If It Ain't Jazz label comes from Swedish producer Opolopo. For this one he takes two classics from the jazz-disco world and adds his own distinctive spins. The results soar into the stratosphere on golden chords and humid pads, funky drums and gliding grooves. Both are timeless reworks that will do plenty of damage on a wide range of dance floors. This marks another noteworthy release for this small but well formed label.
