Crazy Kind Of Feeling
Crazy Kind Of Feeling (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 101. Rel: 15 Feb 21
  1. Crazy Kind Of Feeling (5:15)
  2. Crazy Kind Of Feeling (dub take 1) (5:18)
  3. Crazy Kind Of Feeling (DJ Duckcomb Discomix) (7:47)
Review: The always cultured Emotional Rescue kicks of the first of what will be a series of reissue sou the music of young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel. He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Look Into My Eyes (reissue)
Cat: BEWITH 012TWELVE. Rel: 22 Apr 20
  1. Look Into My Eyes (6:49)
  2. Express (4:55)
Review: Brit-funk combo 52nd Street are undeniably best-known for their 1983 single on Factory Records, "Look Into My Eyes", which came accompanied by some killer remixes from John "Jellybean" Benitez and sailed closed to the NYC electro sound. The Manchester outfit's roots were in jazz-funk though, as this essential reissue of their 1982 debut single proves. "Look Into My Eyes" is simply superb: a warm, woozy and gently groovy affair full of attractive lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer lines and dreamy chords. If you're after some more up-tempo dancefloor pressure, check out flipside "Express" - a riotous affair rich in hammered-out Clavinet lines, jaunty lead lines and energetic percussion.

Terrorize My Heart (Disco Dub)
Cat: BC 0757. Rel: 25 Oct 18
  1. Terrorize My Heart (Disco dub) (3:49)
  2. Terrorize My Heart (Tall Black Guy Bounce remix) (3:44)
Review: The faultless Big Crown label revisits one of its biggest hits from back in 2016. New York City-based collective 79.5 is made up of seven musicians and singers and their gorgeous 'Terrorize My Heart' 45rpm reached some heart aching disco highs. Now it comes with in two new forms - the disco dub with its seductive drums and bass and airy, soulful vocal, and a remix from hip hop royalty Tall Black Guy. He deconstructs the tune and rebuilds it as a smoky, jazz tinged slow motion hip hop beat. The chords are warm and cuddly, the vocal is more meandering but still acts as the perfect icing on a delicious cake.

  1. Dracula (5:48)
  2. There Will Be A Time (4:24)
  3. Song For Spike (6:47)
  4. VSL (4:18)
Review: Multi faceted maverick Jared Hines returns with their first release in two years - "Dracula". Don't be put off by the spooky title; each of these four tracks is full of love, funk and freestyle finesse as we're given an intimate tour of Jared's deepest ABCF psyche; "Dracula" hits with a barbed, slinky jack, jazzy organs and faraway vox textures while "There Will Be A Time" brings the chills with a jittering 707 beat, dreamy chords and D'Angelo style croons. Meanwhile on the B we hit the rampant slap bass and cosmic tendencies of "Song For Spike" and finally the Amp Fiddleresque funk of "VSL". Jared ain't no flash in the pan.

Summertime (Record Store Day 2020)
  1. Summertime (3:47)
  2. Summertime (instrumental) (4:06)
Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

African Sheikh EP
Cat: PTP 006. Rel: 23 Oct 19
  1. African Sheikh (5:49)
  2. Impossible (6:22)
  3. Confusion (6:00)
  4. Dazzled (4:52)
Review: Passport To Paradise has pulled off something of a coup here, snagging a rare re-edit EP from Redlight Records' digger Abel Nagengast. Predictably, it's rather good, and full to bursting with sneaky reworks of obscure gems. Title track "African Sheikh" - a kind of wonky Italo-disco/proto Afro-house hybrid - is particularly potent, though the quirky electrofunk/synth-pop shuffle of "Impossible" is almost as good. On the flip you'll find the dreamy, Balearic disco slinkiness of "Confusion", and the even more horizontal vibes of "Dazzled", where glistening guitars and hazy vocals intertwine with delay-laden beats and sustained synthesizer notes. As re-edit EPs go, it's one of the more special ones.

  2. Coffe & Cocaine (Bruno Belissimo edit) (3:39)
  3. It Ain't Reggae (Lego edit) (4:21)
  4. This Time Baby (Bully Boy dub) (4:43)
Review:  Those playful edit and remix maestros at French label Act of Sedition are back with another red hot, super limited 2 x 7" special. It kicks off with a nice languid remix of the classic 'Let Love Be Free' with an extra low slung sleazy bassline beneath the gorgeous vocal. Bruno Belissimo goes for a heavy, scuffed up deep house take on 'Coffee & Cocaine' that has a vast bassline and some jazzy keys all tumbling off grid. Lego edits 'It Aint Reggae' into a high speed boogie gem and Bully Boy offers a chunky disco stomper to round things out.

Cat: PP 55512. Rel: 07 Aug 19
  1. Dance Dance Dance (disco version) (6:13)
  2. Dance Dance Dance (DJ version) (2:55)
Review: Originally taking form as Universal Robot Band's dreamy instrumental disco cut "Thyme" in 1977, within a year of its release Patrick Adams invited Marta Acuna to add suitably yearning, hazy vocal. Adding to the silky groove's allure without taking any of its original soul, Marta elevated an already pristine track into a real moment that embodies the deeper, most soulful aspects of late 70s disco. A highly authentic P&P reissue.

  2. When I'm Alone (Jacques Renault remix) (6:25)
  3. When I'm Alone (Dirty Channels remix) (5:43)
  4. When I'm Alone (JKriv & Peter Matson remix) (6:14)
Review: Adeline is undoubtedly best known for being the front-woman of Brooklyn-based disco band Escort, an outfit whose members also included Razor-N-Tape co-founder JKriv. It makes sense, then, that her latest solo single is appearing on their "Reserve" offshoot. Co-produced by Midnight Magic man Morgan Willey, "When I'm Alone" is a revivalist leftfield disco cut rich in "Beam Me Up" style walking bass, ear-catching guitar riffs and lolloping drums - all topped off by a fantastic vocal from Adeline. Jacques Renault delivers a slightly heavier, house-influenced remix with subtle Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, while Dirty Channels offers a more bustling but still pleasingly organic sounding disco-house take. Finally JKriv joins forces with Peter Matson on a remix that sounds like vintage Escort with added dub delays.

Adesse Versions Edits (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: RNT 026. Rel: 05 Jul 17
  1. Bumpin' NYC (5:23)
  2. Sistem (6:36)
Review: Kevin Gorman aka Adesse Versions brings his cut and paste ethos to Brooklyn edit series Razor-N-Tape with a varied pair of heaters. On this wicked two tracker, the label takes it back to their early format of one track per side: and these two cuts can certainly carry it! On this side we've got "Bumpin' NYC" a lo-slung disco classic with that proper New York City vibe, if ya catch our drift? On that side, we have a lovely little number in the form of "Sistem" that flips an afrobeat sample into a dark and groovy club track with even a little bit of acid for good measure.

Blue Monday
Cat: AV 001. Rel: 15 May 19
  1. Blue Monday (6:40)
  2. Blue Monday (dub) (5:05)
Review: Mancunian Kevin Gorman used to make some great minimal techno on his Mikrowave imprint but has since moved on to create some of his best music under the Adesse Versions moniker. With a slew of fine edits and remixes under his belt, he presents us with a killer cover and tribute that's set to be one of the summer's biggest anthems. A tribute to the seminal New Order classic "Blue Monday", Gorman retains the very same Moog bass and ARP strings from the original, over a groovy breakbeat and a vocal reminiscent of Bernard Sumner himself. It was an ambitious feat, but Gorman manages to pull of an impressive rendition here, which also comes accompanied with a handy instrumental version on the flip.

  2. Werner's Spiel (6:02)
  3. Elvira's Katzenfisch (5:40)
  4. Frank's Einsamkeit (5:51)
Review: Audiosex and Hanoben stepped out together on Discos Capablanca back in 2018 with the on-point acidities of Phone Sex, and now they're teaming up once again for this killer clutch of edit tackle for the always interesting Duca Bianco label. Rather than the well-mined stocks of disco and funk that usually get dusted down by edit scavenegers, these two have turned to synth pop and German new wave sounds, coming up with four deep cover, deliciously dishevelled pieces which align perfectly with the brand of acidic club music they make themselves. 'Elvira's Katzenfisch' is a prime case in point - a broad, sweeping slice of synthwave which sounds like it might slide off the reel to reel at any moment, while 'Frank's Einsamkeit' swells into a searing 303 burner for the darkest dungeon dancefloors.

  3. Afacan Soundsystem - "Make You Beep" (4:58)
Review: New York favourite, adventurous house producer and classy party starter Jacques Renault brings his unique style to two chunky jams by Afacan Soundsystem. Bringing a full flavour sense of body twisting groove, he flips the opener into a mystic cut with exotic melodies and crunchy, proto-house drums. 'Belly Dance Dream' is a dark percussive workout at hyper speed. The jangling tambourines, wild north African melodies and hammering drums all make for a frenzied mood and then 'Make You Beep' is a monstrous mash-up of techno, electro, afro and disco.

Review: Cordial have partnered with Afrodisia to reissue their sought-after album, 1980's Elephant Sunrise, in 2018, with an album of previously unreleased recordings to follow. To whet our appetite, they've decided to release the never-before-heard "Malik", a brilliant chunk of jazz-funk fusion that would have got jazz dancers hot under the collar had it appeared when it was originally recorded way back in 1982. On the B-side you'll find the similarly minded "A Fool No Longer", a dancefloor-focused chunk of blue-eyed soul that has previously only been available on obscure 1981 compilation album Rock Aus Der Alten Schule. Brilliant stuff all told.

Review: Back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history "Melodiya", many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called "Magnitizdat" (short of Magnetic Tape Release). It began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. In the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj's mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. Plus Seven Records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

Review: Of all of the tracks that seemed to define the soul, funk and disco revival lead by Floating Points and his co-run Melodies International label, it is the title track off this albumfrom Aged in Harmony. It was a real anthem for the multi-hour DJ sets at Plastic People, for his cult-ish NTS shows and the parties he played to record obsessives all over the world. And it's easy to see why - the steamy sax, the classy strings, the hooky bass motifs and the lovely drums. Here it get served up twice, along with a load more tunes that include sentimental steppers like 'I Feel Like Dancing' and the lush Balearic melodies of 'Theme For Someone Special.'

  2. I-Robots Reconstruction (take II) (9:17)
Review: Since appearing on Motor City Drum Ensemble's fine Selektors compilation back in 2016, AHZZ's 1981 gem "New York Moving" has become one of the most in-demand disco-funk rarities around. Here, Opilec founder I-Robots (AKA DJ/producer Gianlucca Pandullo) offers his own "reconstructions". Naturally, he doesn't tamper with the basic groove, instead choosing to rearrange the original, emphasizing different aspects of the killer original version on each mix. So, while the A-side "Reconstruction 1" concentrates on the stomping groove and cascading Moog lines, the flipside "Reconstruction 2" version makes more room for an extended saxophone solo and dubs out the backing track impressively. Were he alive today, Larry Levan would definitely approve.

  3. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - "Everyday" (JN Disco Re-Bump remix) (7:28)
  4. Art Of Tones - "Flower Child" (feat Anduze) (7:01)
Review: Like its numerous predecessors, 16th edition of Z Records' long running "Attack The Dancefloor" series is packed to the rafters with tried and tested dancefloor treats, most of which have never appeared on vinyl before. First up, Saison tackles Akabu's 2001 classic "Ride The Storm", turning it into a deep, bouncy and rubbery chunk of lilting, string-drenched house goodness, before Dr Packer delivers a subtly tooled-up take on The Love Symphony Orchestra's grandiose and sexually-charged 1978 disco classic "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". Label head honcho Joey Negro provides a superb deep disco rework of one of his own productions, the Sunburst Band's 2004 summer sing-along "Everyday", while Art of Tones' "Flower Child" is a flash-fried, disco-funk romp laden with superb lead vocals from Anduze.

Review: Second time around for Al Onzo's "Tango Japan", a fiendishly hard-to-find fusion of synth-pop and early Belgian new beat that's long been popular with serious Euro-disco crate diggers. As on the original, you get both vocal and instrumental takes, with the former layering sleazy male spoken word vocals and cheeky, high register female chorus vocals over a bubbly, synthesizer-heavy backing track rich in chiming melodies and fuzzy synth-bass. This time round, reissuers Mothball Records have also included a previously unreleased cut "Camel Soup in China Town", a similarly exotic, tongue-in-cheek and thoroughly entertaining affair. Simply essential.

Review: In the super saturated and competitive scene of disco edits, it takes a lot to differentiate yourself from the pack. Enter New York City's Razor N Tape. What do they bring to the table that is different, you may ask? They offer up what they call 'respectful edits'. Got it? There are the ones you can trust and play with confidence. On this volume they present Al Tone, who are known for their eponymous rework series. The duo comprised of Chicagoans Al Bumz and Tone B serve up some lovely Afro boogie on "Feelin' Irie" and some pitched up soulpower in the form of "Simone Manuel". On the flip, there's a familiar hook on the vocal driven deep disco resplice of "Groovin'" then they take us home with the Theo-esque looped sax and falsetto gallup of "Wishes".

Review: Back in 2017, Four Flies Records unearthed and released a previously unheard "Afro-cosmic funk" EP from Italian soundtrack and library music legend Alessandro Alessandroni. Three years on, they've decided to give the 1978 recording the remix treatment. Bolissa and guests Calibra 35 kick things off with a densely percussive, out-of-this-world take on "Afro-Voodoo", before Pad re-imagines "Afro Darkness" as a chugging chunk of beatdown-disco laden with colossal chords, arpeggio bass and intergalactic electronics. Over on side B the "Jolly Mare Lifting" version of "Afro Discoteca" is a veritable leftfield disco stomper notable for its low-slung bass and spacey Moog lines, while Luca's "Quirky Version" of "Afro Darkness" is the kind of hallucinogenic, Marimba-tinged number that you can imagine Daniele Baldelli playing at the Cosmic Club circa 1981.

Review: After coming to light with his crucial edits on Les Edits Du Golem, Alexis Le-Tan has gone on to become one of the shining lights on Bahnsteig 23's roster of deviant discoid dissenters, and he's burning up as he comes careering onto the label's 45th release. "Agre" is a steroid-injected blast of 80s firepower, all stomping drums and a dazzling assortment of dancefloor-engineered synth parts. "Pune" is a slower, groovier jam but it's no less striking in its make-up. "Hubli" takes a more unusual path away from the party, into a hard to define zone somewhere between soundtrack, home listening jam and un-nerving warm up-not warm up. "Kulem" finishes the EP off on a more steady tone, but still the rich, glossy production details come spilling out of this bombastic jam just like the other tracks on this loud and proud record.

Review: Constant Sound offshoot Cardiology's latest boundary-blurring re-edit release comes courtesy of Alexny, an Argentinian rising star who has previously released a wealth of music on all manner of digital-only imprints. He hits the ground running with 'Everybody Get Up', sneakily adding new beats, bass and musical touches to a string-drenched old disco jam, before applying the same house-style approach to a hybrid disco/electrofunk cut on 'Get On The Floor'. Over on side B, 'Give It To Me' is a chunkier and more bass-heavy disco-house bumper, while 'Do It You Got It' is a rolling, filter-sporting revision of a particularly spacey, turn-of-the-80s disco workout.

Review: This is a super sought after slice of 1980s disco goodness that was sampled by UK house producer Midland. He used bits of it on his huge, and we mean huge, 2016 summer anthem 'Final Credits' and that only served to send the price of the original up further. You'd be lucky if you can find an original copy of the 7" for under L125 these days. This official reissue has your back though and has been fully remastered with replica artwork in time to celebrates the 40th anniversary of its original release.

Rockin Poppin Full Tilting
Cat: UR 2290P. Rel: 03 Aug 21
  1. Rockin Poppin Full Tilting (long version) (6:12)
Review: Lee Alfred's 1980 disco classic 'Rockin - Poppin Full Tilting' fetches incredibly high prices on second hand vinyl markets, if you can even find one at all. It is one of only a couple singles the artist put out between 1980 and 1981. Here it gets a special one-sided 45rpm pressing with an extended version rolling on for six sumptuous minutes. Underpinined by a tight rhythm section and bubbly bass, the dazzling synth leads are all pixelated and cosmic, the female backing vocals add heat and the main voice of Alfred is all buttery and soulful.

Ubiquity (12")

  1. Ubiquity (3:29)
  2. Ubiquity (The Magician remix) (4:19)
  3. Ubiquity (Eric Duncan remix) (8:11)
  4. Ubiquity (Lubelski remix) (6:02)
Review: 'Ubiquity' really is an all-star affair, at least by nu-disco standards. It started out as a revivalist, boogie-era disco groove crafted by Nicky Night Time, which was then tweaked and turned into a vocal number, before Breakbot added some killer string and horn arrangements. The results are spellbinding, all told, coming on like a future disco classic full of addictive vocals, colourful synths and authentic turn-of-the-80s instrumentation. The superb original mix comes with a trio of re-rubs: a loopy disco-house revision from The Magician, a more cosmic and spaced-out revision from Eric Duncan that recalls some of his work as Still Going, and a Metro Area-influenced re-wire courtesy of Lubelski.

  1. What To Do (7:41)
  2. Can't Take It No More (7:19)
  3. Lover Is Back (8:23)
  4. Things Will Come Your Way (6:28)
Review: Portuguese Munich Machine and edit king Alkalino delivers Wall Of Fame's first solo release with four tasteful reworks. On the A side, the Audaz main man serves up the '70s disco/rock fusion of "What To Do" and the uplifting soul heaven of "Can't Take It No More". On the flip is the funky disco fusion of "Lover Is Back" (channelling the heyday of The Big Apple way back when!) meanwhile "Things Will Come Your Way" offers up some sexy latin/bossa vibes. After a lengthy catalogue of releases available exclusively on Juno Download, we're happy to finally see of this guys efforts on wax!

Reworks Vol 4
Cat: AUDAZ 04. Rel: 25 Oct 17
  1. Need Some Love (7:02)
  2. Break Out (4:58)
  3. Mandinga (7:01)
  4. Let's Go Dancing (5:46)
Review: Lisbon bred, Munich dwelling Lino Rodrigues aka Alkalino, began DJing in the late 80's. Skip forward almost 30 years, through countless worldwide residencies and numerous vinyl and digital releases and we find him at the top of the international disco/nu-disco edit craze - with releases on multiple labels such as KAT, Wall Of Fame and Whiskey Disco. Further proof of the guy's expertise is the fact that he'll be a guest at Ableton's massive LOOP summit in Berlin this year. He returns to his esteemed Audaz imprint for the fourth edition of his Reworks series. You can count on the guy to deliver 'respectful edits' much in the vein of Jkriv, Sleazy McQueen or Late Night Tuff Guy. Starting off with a known deep disco joint that's been ergonomically retuned for modern dancefloors on "Need Some Love" while "Break Out" delivers some always handy soul power (on the funky tip) to get some hands in the air. On the flip, we've got some sultry Brazilian vibes on "Mandinga" which is your secret weapon for next Summer's round of open air parties.

  1. Cabriodelic (7:00)
  2. On The Way (6:30)
  3. Tour De L'afrique (7:44)
  4. In Sands (5:34)
Review: The last we heard from Kinfolk was on the excellent "Mirage" by Kalidasa, but now the adventurous and chug-friendly label is back with this killer EP from Alterleo. "Cabriodelic" will have hips swinging at an easy tempo, not least thanks to the nagging throb of the bassline and the swaying drums shaking over the top of the track. "On The Way" takes things in a freakier direction, using ample samples and channeling a little industrial noir, while "Tour De L'afrique" focuses on craftily programmed drums and captivating melodic subtleties. "In Sands" finishes the set with a wigged out acid-trance rumination that should appeal to those who love the sound of European freak-beats before dance music got compartmentalized.
