Review: Passport To Paradise has pulled off something of a coup here, snagging a rare re-edit EP from Redlight Records' digger Abel Nagengast. Predictably, it's rather good, and full to bursting with sneaky reworks of obscure gems. Title track "African Sheikh" - a kind of wonky Italo-disco/proto Afro-house hybrid - is particularly potent, though the quirky electrofunk/synth-pop shuffle of "Impossible" is almost as good. On the flip you'll find the dreamy, Balearic disco slinkiness of "Confusion", and the even more horizontal vibes of "Dazzled", where glistening guitars and hazy vocals intertwine with delay-laden beats and sustained synthesizer notes. As re-edit EPs go, it's one of the more special ones.

Review: PPU shine the light on Leroy Ace Miller, a funk musician hailing from Macon, Georgia, which is where Otis Redding, Little Richard and James Brown all cut their teeth. The label notes Miller got his breakthrough in 1985 with Teacher, released on the indie California label Marina Sound overseen by Ron Patton. The pair would later work together with Ace Miller delivering two dusty lo fi funk cuts for the Baywest label set up by Patton in 1986. Original copies of "Hook Me/Sneak Previews" are fetching upwards of several hundred pounds on the collectors market so a round of applause to PPU for facilitating this official reissue. Miller is now apparently an attorney in Macon, but still dedicates his spare time to recording in his home studio!

Review: Originally taking form as Universal Robot Band's dreamy instrumental disco cut "Thyme" in 1977, within a year of its release Patrick Adams invited Marta Acuna to add suitably yearning, hazy vocal. Adding to the silky groove's allure without taking any of its original soul, Marta elevated an already pristine track into a real moment that embodies the deeper, most soulful aspects of late 70s disco. A highly authentic P&P reissue.

  3. Foresta (4:17)
Review: Ad Bourke and Rotla are Italy's answer to Floating Points and the rest of the nu-school, nu-jazz crew. The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

Review: Adesse Versions is undoubtedly a canny fella. Few others would have thought have re-casting Yardborough & Peoples' "Don't Stop The Music" is a sweaty acid jam, but that's exactly what he's done here. It sounds like he's replayed the bassline on a TB-303, accompanying it with clattering drum machine percussion, wonky acid lines and a plethora of delay-laden vocal samples. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Elsewhere, he cuts up a well-known, disco-era soul groover and turns it into a chunky house loop-jam ("Slide"), before beefing up the beats and reaching for the TB-303 once more on disco-acid stomper "Kameleon". File under: guaranteed party-starters.

Review: Given that Soulwax boys Stephen and David Deweale have a major hand in the running of Deewee - with all releases being recorded and mixed at their Belgian studio - it's perhaps unsurprising that the label's output is consistently good. This 12", seemingly a debut from chanteuse Charlotte Adigery, is every bit as impressive as its predecessors. It features the vocalist singing in a modern soul style - in multiple languages, we should add - over wonderfully imaginative, left-of-centre, heavily electronic backing tracks that variously doff a cap to early electro, Italo-disco, minimal wave, and - most surprisingly of all - pastoral folk. It's hard to describe, but uniformly brilliant.

"Legalize It" riffs on a classic standard with a little vibraphone sweetness, "Sweet Island Jam" takes us so close to the shoreline your toes get wet while "Think About What You Do" sways with instant feel good appeal where the horns and vocals play equal part in the harmonic experience. Here are four more unique musical visions from the great continent; dubby highlife ("Liquid Lagos") shamanic lo-fi acid tech ("Fuji"), space disco ("Listen To The Beats Of Your Heart") and straight up wisdom ("Who Owns The Land") And if that's not enough to tempt you, all proceeds go to Human Rights Justice Group, Nigeria, too.

Review: Back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history "Melodiya", many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called "Magnitizdat" (short of Magnetic Tape Release). It began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. In the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj's mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. Plus Seven Records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

Review: Not just a beautiful compliment to pay someone special, but a hugely influential record that inspired Floating Points' now legendary Plastic People parties, too... A super obscure and expensive one at that. Now re-issued on Floating Points' own Melodies imprint - across three 45s - the Detroit band get full exposure with the deliciously funky main track enjoying two versions before dipping into the softer, more pastoral charms of "I Feel Like Dancing" and the string-led swoon festival, "Theme For Someone Special". We close on two contrasting grooves; an earthy ballad ("Trust Me") and a Whitfield & Strong style funk instrumental ("Dance Awhile"). Cheers Sam!

Review: Bologna's Frank Agrario decided to take destiny into his own hands earlier this year, founding Micronation Records as an outlet for his music. The Ladonia EP - named after a disputed micro-nation in Southern Sweden - is Agrario's second missive for the imprint, and features a particularly luscious, amospheric dancefloor roller named after the state's most famous landmark, a sculpture called "Nimis". Arguably even better is "I Played That Track Already', a dusty, Detroit style deep house cut blessed with a bold cowbell line, sustained chords, and a nagging vocal hook. Rick Wade provides a deliciously deep and soulful interpretation of that track, while the softly jazzy, broken-house track "Lesboa" is also worth a listen.

Review: Deliciously care-free, sunny-sided and mildly cosmic: Brooklyn's Aimes delivers yet another pert pop package. "Pleasure Cruise" is a hooky, synth pop jam that will have you singing along before the end of the first play. Imagine Hot Chip on the fluffiest of jags or Sebastien Tellier on the poppiest of flexes and you're kinda close. The vocoder-heavy lolloper "Acid Dreaming", meanwhile, sits somewhere between Air and Jim Noir with its unabashed retro-future charm. The pleasure is ours.

Review: Rothmans are back with their 3rd release of 2014 and back in the squad is Brooklyn beat master Aimes. You might remember his substitiute appereance on Rothmans 2 alongside Fairplay & Strunz. The release plays homage to informous French defender Marius Tresor who hard nosed defending earned him a place in Pele's top 100 players of all time. He also made waves off the field with a brief singing carear but we will leave you to research that yourself!!. Back to the release and we find Aimes following on from where Ste Spandex left off with an up tempo trancy, acid belter 'Tunnel Down' . Tracks 2 lowers the tempo a little and feels a little more classic Rothmans with that Nu-Disco/Italo feel too it , a sound that served them so well through Roth 3 - 5. The remix comes in on the B side from the legendary Brassica , and he doesent pull any punches at all, the remix takes all the aspects of the origianl and weaves them into an 8min piece of original music that just keeps on giving! One of the remixes of the year from the London based wizard. Again Rothmans pull it out fo the bag in the last minute and deliver andother stella EP

Review: We know little of Ajvar Soundystem, but we always like an artist who comes through uninvited and accompanied by a new label. That's the way things should be. What we can say about Take Away 001 is that "Freak Hodja" is a glorious disco number with the perect balance of Arabic vocalism - a blend that is unfortunately not heard too often around these parts. "Roki" is faster, nuttier, and focusses more on the percussion elements, a zesty, freaky blend of drums and funked-out samples, while "Syfilis" is an absolute crowd-pleaser - a tune that you'll be singing along to without knowing a word or its meaning (unless you speak Arabic, of course).

Loaded with boogie drive from the relentless pianos and percussion and raw funk from the lavish bass thrills and runs, this more than testifies to its Go Go title. With big gospel style vocal chants and a fired free-spirit, the vocal's so strong it even peppers the instrumental. 10 minutes per side, too... There's a lot of partying potential right here.

Review: In the super saturated and competitive scene of disco edits, it takes a lot to differentiate yourself from the pack. Enter New York City's Razor N Tape. What do they bring to the table that is different, you may ask? They offer up what they call 'respectful edits'. Got it? There are the ones you can trust and play with confidence. On this volume they present Al Tone, who are known for their eponymous rework series. The duo comprised of Chicagoans Al Bumz and Tone B serve up some lovely Afro boogie on "Feelin' Irie" and some pitched up soulpower in the form of "Simone Manuel". On the flip, there's a familiar hook on the vocal driven deep disco resplice of "Groovin'" then they take us home with the Theo-esque looped sax and falsetto gallup of "Wishes".

Review: When it comes to dusty-fingered disco re-edits, few dig deeper than Sweden's Albion Venables. We'd be surprised if all bar a few hardy collectors recognizes any of the source material behind this latest collection of scalpel rearrangements. "African King" is a chunk of percussive, low-slung, Afro-influenced disco-rock sleaze, while "Riviera Walk" is a particularly Balearic chunk of loved-up proto house. Flip for the slap bass propelled, boogie-era disco breeziness of "Fire Dance", and the synthesizer-heavy, Euro-eccentricity of "Midnite Magic". This latter cut is arguably the EP's standout moment - it gets just the right balance between camp Italo-disco and intergalactic cosmic disco - though all four edits are superb.

Review: Croatian crate diggers and disco doyens Legalize Lambada come correct with their second EP: Swedish Frisbee chucker Albion takes the lead with two contrasting slices: Like a big old furry beast, "Yetti" bears demonic vocal teeth but shows a much softer side through its instrumentation while "Into Infinity" is, as its name suggests, pure cosmicity. Review: Mancunian scalpel fiends Pablo & Shoey have been rather quiet of late. Surprisingly, this is the first EP in their popular Downtown Sounds Classics series for almost two years. In a nod to Manchester's once-thriving electro scene, the A-side is given over to a tasty, on-point rearrangement of Aleem's 1984 breakdance classic "Release Yourself", which once helped inspire a generation of future dance music producers. On the flip, Mary Clark's recently reissued 1980 disco classic "Take Me I'm Yours" goes under the knife, before they finish with a high-octane chunk of obscure disco silliness: Rena's ludicrously hard to find "Dance It Off". Their edit is fairly reverential, sticking to the loose and sweaty feel of the original.

Igino's vocal on the A-side track is undeniably catchy, and it sounds great both in the context of the original and simmering over Severino and Ray Mang's slow-burning gem of a remix. "Bella L'Estate" meanwhile sees the duo head into spooky, cinematic territory to great effect, marking out the kind of off-kilter disco jam to turn heads.

Typically, Reworks Volume 1 is a varied affair, containing subtle revisions that tend towards scalpel re-arrangements rather than tooled-up remixes. He begins with "Always", a smooth and sun-kissed rearrangement of a dusty old reggae-soul number guaranteed to put smiles on faces. "Band Jive" is a largely instrumental re-edit of RInder & Lewis's druggy cover version of "Willie & The Hand Jive" - a track famously sampled by Padded Cell for their superb "Piccadilly Line Strut" some years back - while closer "Brand New Lover" offers a straightened-out rearrangement of a sparkling, Italo-disco classic.

  2. Love Drop - "Pull Up" (7:23)
  3. Terrence Pearce - "Ushukela" (5:58)
  4. Alex Zuiev - "Afro Magic" (6:31)
Review: There's no complex concept behind the latest four-track EP from the reliable Whiskey Disco camp, just a quartet of killer re-edits crying out for peak-time plays. Highlights wise, we're particularly enjoying the hard-spun Afro-disco grooves and well-placed dub delays of Alex Zuiev's "Afro Magic", though Alkalino's quirky opener - a thrillingly dubbed-out take on a tongue-in-cheek, left-of-centre disco treat - is also superb. Elsewhere, Love Drop sticks heavy new house beats underneath a stone cold classic (listen to the clips and you'll be able to identify the source material in seconds), while Terrence Pearce crafts a space-disco epic out of undulating Afro-disco grooves, bleeping synth melodies and some seriously cosmic effects.

  2. Afrodiscobeat (Africaine 808 rework) (9:55)
  3. Afrodiscobeat (Mexican Institute Of Sound rework) (4:06)
Review: For the second volume in the Tony Allen and Africa 70 Disco Afro Re-Edit series, Africaine 808 and Mexican Sound Institute have been given the tricky task of reworking some suitably epic classics. The 12-minute original version of "Afro-Disco Beat", long considered one of the greatest Afrobeat workouts of all time, proudly stretches out across the A-side, allowing listeners to revel in Allen's extended drum breaks and Africa 70's rousing, horn-heavy instrumentation. Africaine 808 give the track a deliciously spacey, Moog-heavy makeover, combining Allen's playing and Africa 70's horns with vintage drum machine hits and outer-space effects. A brilliant package is completed by Mexican Sound Institute's similarly spacey, intergalactic interpretation of 1979 cut "African Message".

  2. Find My Way (Marius Circus disco dub)
Review: Deep Balearica beckons as Almunia conjures a spell-binding fusion of guitars and studio effects. Imagine Andrew Weatherall producing Simon and Garfunkel. The soundtrack to the perfect sunset, this gradually builds with the most genuine euphoria that could possibly be mustered in a studio. For a proper dancefloor jolt, jump on Marius Circus's dub... Armed with a pumping 4/4, mild acid squirts and heavy dub effects on the guitar, it's the soundtrack to the perfect night that follows the perfect sunset. Make sure this finds its way to your collection.
