Review: Given that Alex Storrer released his first Lexx record way back in 2001, this album is way overdue. It's Storrer's first as Lexx following an abstract 2002 ambient set as Lexxodus. "Cosmic Shift" is as warm, groovy, Balearic and beguiling as you'd expect with Storrer joining the dots between yacht rock, dub, deep house, ambient, folk, new age and lazy Latin grooves. Interestingly, Storrer successfully takes to the mic on numerous occasions, while guests including Woolfy, Ella Thompson and Harriet Brown also lend a hand. The results are uniformly superb, which begs the question: why didn't he do it sooner? Let's hope it won't be 20 years before we get a sequel.

Review: It's been nearly four years since Hans-Peter Lindstrom's last solo set, the decidedly grandiose Where You Go, I Go To. When Six Cups Of Rebel opens with a similarly soundscape composition, the spiraling "No Release", you expect more of the same. Yet it's something of a red (pickled) herring. In fact, Six Cups Of Rebel could be considered something of a return to his dancefloor roots - though it bears little resemblance to his clean, snappy early work. It's urgent, hurried, psychedelic - even a little fun (recent single "Deja vu" and the bonkers "Magik" being good examples). In that regard, it sounds a bit like an LSD-influenced take on fellow Norwegian disconauts Mungolian Jet Set - a strange and intoxicating brew that delights and confuses in equal measure.

Review: Pure Ghanaian gold, Disco Documentary: Full Of Funk was a rare private press released in 1979 never to be released again... Until now. Dusting off the long lost tapes with due care and attention, BBE have kindly reminded us that disco had much wider impact than the US and Europe. Nana Love's slightly nasal tones are instantly alluring, but it's the clam-tight musicianship that really bites. Big Bernard Edwards bass, shiny guitar twangs, extensive organ noodling and vibrant Afrofunk horns galore, this is a truly stunning document.

Review: One of the most remarkable things about Saturday Night Special, the 1975 debut album by the Lyman Woodard Organisation, is how two musicians - accompanied by various sessions drummers - could make such a rich and layered set. It still impresses that Lyman Woodard and Ron English could create so many superbly evocative and cinematic jazz-fusion workouts almost on their own. The set has long been regarded as one of the best musical commentaries on a particularly low period in Detroit's post-industrial history, and many of the tracks are suitably poignant - even those clearly aimed at the dancefloor. Critically, this reissue deals with one of the major issues with original copies - their poor pressing - by stretching the same tracks over two slabs of wax, rather than one.

Review: Pascal Rioux's Favorite Recordings hasn't put out a dud record since its inception back in 2006 and, along with introducing us to artists like Onra, the imprint is surely one of the most complete sources of disco and nu-disco available on the market. Their most recent series, AOR Global Sounds, have all the makings of future classics, and this is especially true given the fact that all of its tunes have been lost in the depths of time and greedy Discogs sellers. The third chapter in the series features tunes from between 1976 and 1985, carefully curated by Charles Maurice with the aim of showcasing various disco artists from around the world that have been influenced by the inimitable 'Westcoast' boogie sound. Make no mistake, these tunes are all rare-as-hens-teeth, and you're unlikely to find them pressed up on wax anywhere else. Although each tune features a different artist, from Stratus through to Funky Team or even Brazil's Willy Santana, this is very much an LA kinda thang. An essential comp for anyone serious about their boogie joints...

Review: On his fourth exploration of the world of global "Adult Oriented Rock", French crate-digger Charles Maurice focuses on the period between 1977 and '86. That means a greater emphasis on synthesizers, dusty drum machines and the kind of sparkling melodies that would once have drifted from daytime radio at an alarming rate. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the dewy-eyed synth-soul of Arlana's "When You Call My Name" and the breezy boogie of Omega Sunrise's "Too Hip", to the sparse Balearic bliss of Isabelle Mayereau's "Orange Bleue", the flute-laden easy listening hum of Fernando Toussaint, the sax-happy '80s sleaze of Special Occasion's brilliant "Flyin' To Santa Barbara" and the jaunty Latino jazz-funk of "Mellow Out" by Pacific Dreams.

Review: For those intrigued by the distinctively Gallic but authentically American-sounding world of French disco-boogie, Charles Maurice's ongoing compilation series should be essential listening. Here he serves up a third instalment that's every bit as good as its' acclaimed predecessors. Highlights naturally come thick and fast throughout, from the mid-80s dreaminess of Maya's undeniably Balearic "Lait De Coco (Dub)" and the Brenda Taylor-ish bounce of Judy Carter's brilliant "Listen to the Music", to the Leroy Burgess style piano stabs and Patrick Adams-ish disco production of Caramel's "L'Amour Toujours L'Amour". Oh, and the late night radio warmth of NST Cophies' "Segregation", a sweet, undulating workout that will no doubt find favour with Balearic selectors.

Review: South Africa's Letta Mbulu has put out a vast amount of quality material in her lifetime, and although the singer was based far away from Europe, her music was picked up by the London massive during the mid '80s at clubs like Dingwalls and featured heavily in the rare groove digs. The opener "Sweet Julu" is now a London two-step classic, while other tracks like "Nomalizo" or "The Village" are more on the disco side, all of them filtered with a distinctly tropical edge! A top reissue!

Review: There can be few records bettter suited to the encroaching summer than this decidedly sun-kissed and carefree effort from these Australian electronic seers. Here we have a maximalist take on their trademark pop stylings that results in a relentlessly upbeat collection of bangers containing a certain left-of-certain skew even amidst the party-hearty vibes; think a midnight meeting between prime Talking Heads and their countrymen Cut Copy, in effect. 'All Possible Futures' is as positive as its title suggests, possessed of a hedonistic kick and joie-de-vivre to lighten the mood of even the most ardent cynic.

Review: Out Of The Blue, Phil Mison's first compilation for some time, was apparently inspired by his first few trips to the White Isle of Ibiza, and specifically the unlikely set of circumstances that led to him filling in for Jose Padilla at Cafe Del Mar. Musically, it's reflective of the story, joining the dots between impossible-to-find rarities (see the loved-up instrumental jazz-rock of "Jelly" by The Cactus Rose Project and the life-affirming fusion business of Christoph Spendel Group's "Forever", for starters), huggable Balearic synth-pop, flamenco-inspired sunset gems, and a smattering of head-in-the-clouds Italian dream house killers. Given Mison's heritage and status as one of Balearica's top selectors, it's perhaps unsurprising that Out Of The Blue is undeniably brilliant.

Review: Launching a little under three years ago, How Do You Are's Too Slow To Disco series has been expertly excavated and with every compendium. But for their first international chapter takes things to an even more detailed level as Rio songsmith and composer legend Ed Motta is handed the curation gloves. Picking across the soft-focus funk, yacht and boogie axis; Ed's perspective and translation of Brazilian soul is a unique and powerful experience that hits in all directions across the 19 track set. From the swooning jazz-tinged big band ballad of Lucinha Turbull's "Toa Manha Brllha O Sol" or the crooning tones of Zeca Do Trombone's "Rota-Mar" right the way through to faster, new wave pieces such as Kiko Zambianchi's "Estreia", this is Too Slow To Disco's finest outing yet.

Review: Be With's latest must-have reissue isn't some obscure, dusty old gem, but rather Roisin Murphy's long out of print 2007 set "Overpowered". It received lavish critical praise on its initial release, with reviewers warming to the album's colourful and exciting mix of synth-pop, string-laden post-disco, retro-futurist house, grungy electro-pop, revivalist boogie and Moroder-ish Machine funk. It remains a fine set. For starters, it contains some of Murphy's most endearing and memorable songs, with her chosen producers - a list that includes Groove Armada's Andy Cato, Seiji and Mark de Clive-Lowe, legendary string arranger Larry Gold and Sheffield pals DJ Parrot and Dean Honer - conjuring up brilliant backing tracks that giddily eschew easy categorization.

Review: Second time around for Joey Negro and Sean P's peerless collection of post-punk era New York club cuts, a compilation that proved hugely influential when it was first released way back in 2000. The track listing strangely omits one track present on the original release (the full 16-minute version of Steve Miller Band's "Macho City"), but otherwise it's a faithful reproduction. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the eccentric electrofunk of Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" and P-funk influenced strut of Material's "Over And Over", to the skittish jazz-goes-dub disco bustle of Don Cherry's "I Walk" and the low-slung percussive voodoo of Nicky Siano's "Move". The undisputed master of NYC leftfield disco, Arthur Russell, is represented via cuts from Loose Joints, Dinosaur and Indian Ocean.

Review: Did you know that Britain was not the only country where street soul was a musical force to be reckoned with during the late '80s and early '90s? As this fine compilation from record collector Augusto Olivani shows, the sound also thrived in Brazil, where inner-city musicians embraced its post-boogie fusion of head-nodding grooves, smooth instrumentation and even smoother vocals. There's much to enjoy throughout "Street Soul Brasil", from the dreamy chords and sparkling melodies of Afrodite Se Quiser's breezy "Fora De Mim", to the Soul II Soul style shuffle of Luna E DJ Cri's "Acabou Como Comecou", via the rushing cheeriness of Junior's "Vim Te Buscar" and the sugary bliss of MC D'Eddy's "Jeito De Menina (Instrumental)".

Review: After the success of their Who Is William Onyeabor compilation last year, Luaka Bop have curated two ultimate collections that explore every nook and cranny of the near-mythical Nigerian dynamo who self-released eight albums between 78-85 before quitting music never to discuss his work publically again. Cherry picking the best elements of every genre (even ones of the future) Onyeabor's songwriting, coupled with some deliciously creative production techniques, still sound timeless now... The cosmic harmonies of "Heaven & Hell", the twitchy ESG-style punk-funk fusion of "Good Name", the calypso croons of "Crashes In Love", the list goes on. A true celebration of a unique man in African music, both this and Box Set 1 are fascinating documents.

Review: Following 2012's fourth volume that celebrated the existential work of Tim Maia, here we find Luaka Bop exploring the legacy of William Onyeabor. A high chief and Kenyan diplomat who allegedly refuses to discuss his music, he self-released eight albums in the 70s and 80s and these are some of the many highlights. Stretching from the New York-influenced post-punk synth funk of "Good Name" to the most authentic Afro fusion of "Why Go To War", Onyeabor's range not only reflects his clear creative skill, but also the ever-developing international language of music during the fruitful period he was active. Who is William Onyeabor? Press play and find out yourselves...

Review: During its lifespan, sadly departed London club Plastic People had it all: an intimate space to dance, an astonishingly good audiophile sound system, and a crew of resident DJs that included the mighty Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's sets there, which ran for a minimum of six hours, have naturally become the stuff of legend. Three years after the club closed, Parrish has decided to release the recording of his final set there - a thrillingly free-wheeling, three-disc voyage that dizzily and gleefully joins the dots between jazz, soul, disco, funk, deep house, acid, techno and much more besides. The three discs capture Parrish at his most lively and esoteric, providing a musical journey that will delight dancers and armchair listeners alike.

Review: Ilan Pdahtzur is as obsessive a record digger as any of his more visible peers. His particular niche is early to mid-eighties club music, and now he gets a platform to show off his skills thanks to the Spacetalk label. "Night City Life" is about music to match that exact setting - nocturnal urban metropolises with glowing neon lights shimmering in the darkness. There's a lot to love across four sides of vinyl here, from Italo disco to steamy boogie cuts and iridescent synth jams. It will make you nostalgic for a time and place you've never experienced (at least not as perfectly as this) and no doubt get plenty of dance floors on their feet.

It was originally written, performed, produced and pressed by almost unknown singer Judy Pollak and Michigan-based backing band 33 1/3. This Athens of the North vinyl re-issue follows a recent CD edition by Japanese imprint P-Vine. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the sax-and-synths-laden disco stomp of "Mr DJ" and down low disco-funk headiness of "Fascinating", to the seductive sweetness of Pollack's breathy vocal on "Come With Me" and the sun-kissed breeziness of the brilliant "More Than Words".

Review: When it comes to crafting languid, sun-baked Balearic grooves and shuffling, soft-focus disco-pop, few are quite as accomplished as Poolside. That much is proved by Heat, the LA duo's first album since 2012 debut Pacific Standard Time. This time round, they've embraced their West Coast roots even further, throwing elements of yacht rock and blue-eyed soul into this mix alongside their usual saucer-eyed blend of lilting Balearic instrumentals (see stunning opener "Hot In The Shade" and the Windsurf-esque "Drifting"), huggable slow motion disco-pop and jaunty, piano-heavy dancefloor workouts (there are numerous cuts that echo the sun-bright brilliance of early single "Do You Believe").

Review: Norwegian disco titan Prins Thomas returns to his regular stomping ground of Smalltown Supersound with this, his sixth solo studio album. Thomas is sounding as vibrant as ever, his musical ideas spilling forth in glorious arrangements of organic instrumentation and gentling bubbling electronics that melt into a mellow, groovy sonic realm. There are hazy, cosmic moments to be savoured on the likes of "Feel The Love", and more adventurous rhythmic trysts like the nagging, snaking percussive melee of "Ambitions". Thomas' studio proficiency is more than matched by his imagination and creative ambition - would you expect any less from such a titan of Scandinavian electronic music?

They've already proved this beyond doubt via a trio of brilliant Magik compilations for Paul Murphy and Simon Purnell's Leng label. Magik Sunset Part 2 continues this run, gathering together another double-album's worth of fantastic obscurities from the worlds of stoner disco, left-of-centre rock, psychedelia and Balearica. As usual, there are some genuine "how did I not know about this record" moments, from the star-kissed Balearic jazz of Fabio Fabor and saucer-eyed white boy reggae-rock of the Trepidants, to the Flamenco-tinged AOR disco shuffle of Jack Adkins' "Sunset Beach".

This volume, Love, predictably includes some genuine thrillers, from the new age electronica of Man Parrish's "Water Sports", and the global mysticism of "Amram" by The Rias Orchestra, to the breathy sleaze of Jeanette's "L'Amour Jove Au Viol", and seductive guitar solos of Bobby Lyle's jazz-funk classic "Makin' Love". We could go on. Suffice to say, there's barely a duffer in sight, and more intriguing twists and turns than your average sci-fi murder mystery.

Review: While their trademark sound has always been flourished with plenty of nods to the past - think jazz-funk, disco, acid jazz and boogie - Reel People's career has been forged on crafting new songs and instrumentals. For their latest album, "Retroflection", they've decided to flip the script, serving up a set of covers of classic cuts with the assistance of some notable vocalists. It's a neat twist and one that results in a string of superb revisions. Check, for example, the Mica Paris-fronted take on Alicia Meyers' "I Want To Thank You", their starry version of electrofunk staple "Don't Stop The Music" (complete with sublime Angie Stone vocal), an Incognito style take on Willie Bobo's "Always There" and a riotous, scene-stealing romp through Pleasure favourite "Joyous".
