Rollover Edit Service Vol 5
Cat: ROLL 005. Rel: 13 Oct 20
  1. Enzo (Lele Sacchi rework) (5:56)
  2. Giorgia (Jack Torsani edit) (5:56)
  3. Espresso (Nathan Joy edit) (10:08)
  4. The Duke Arrives (Pyramiden rework) (6:13)
Review: The Rollover Edit series from Anything Goes reaches volume number 5 with four more fantastic reworks that cover plenty of ground. Lele Sacchi serves up a a folk and Americana tinged version of 'Enzo' that is new age and organic. Jack Torsani takes 'Giorgia' into disco territory with big choruses and crashing hits all forming a strident groove while 'Espresso' delivers a direct caffeine hit in rolling disco form. The best might be saved for last, though, because 'The Duke Arrives (Pyramiden rework)' is a high speed police chase with funky bass and bristling grooves that are alive with great samples.

What's Your Secret?
Cat: DB 011. Rel: 20 Oct 20
  1. What's Your Secret? (Bastedos edit) (9:23)
  2. Do You Blow? (5:25)
Review: Felix Dickinson has been donning the Bastedos re-edit alias on and off for 18 years, occasionally popping up with a fresh selection of superb scalpel jobs. Here the Bristol-based veteran delivers two more incendiary rearrangements. The undoubted highlight is A-side 'What's Your Secret (Bastedos Edit)', a near ten-minute rework of a Clavinet-sporting AOR disco epic that moves through waves of spacey grooves, soaring female backing vocals, impassioned blue-eyed lead vocals and more low-slung sections designed to raise temperatures out on the dancefloor. Dickinson changes tack on flipside 'Do You Blow?', successfully dubbing out an oddball chunk of electro-era quirkiness built around a killer bassline, scat vocals, breathy flute solos and body-popping drum machine beats.

Hot Lovin'
Cat: DBS 1012. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Hot Lovin' (Don't Stop, Don't Quit) (3:39)
  2. Shack Attack (3:20)
Review: More from the cheeky scamps behind the Disco Bits label, an imprint whose releases regularly blur the boundaries between re-editing, re-making and remixing. Here they welcome back imprint regulars Cannon & Mirrorball (we laughed, at least), who once again serve up two guaranteed disco floor-slayers. A-side 'Hot Lovin (Don't Stop, Don't Quit)' sits somewhere between disco-house and hip-house, with excitement-building raps lifted from vintage hip-hop cuts sitting atop a non-stop beat crafted from tooled-up elements from a celebratory disco favourite. As the title suggests, 'Shack Attack' cheekily blends elements from Banbarra classic 'Shack Up' and B-52s hit 'Love Shack', adding some other choice samples to create a tidy, well-made mash-up that sounds tailor-made for disco dancefloors.

Everything Is Fine (Chuggy mix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 106. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Everything Is Fine (3:18)
  2. Everything Dub (3:25)
  3. Everything Is Fine (Chuggy Discomix) (7:23)
Review: To close the 3 EP reissue series of Neville King and Lee Laing's King & City label, the all female group Charisma are presented with their summer infused Lovers cut, Everything Is Fine.

Three Lewisham friends, Angela Richardson on lead vocals, with Geselle and Janie backing, were active from 1982 to 1990, but are really remembered for the early recordings made with Neville King. Their debut, Everything Is Fine rides the Lovers sound at its peak. Written with One Blood's Lloyd Robinson, with the rest of band of Robinson brothers providing the rhythm section, this is pure South London sound system music.

Recorded again at TMC (Tooting Music Centre) Recording Studios - working alongside the likes of Dillinger, Tradition and New Musik - Everything Is Fine rides a beautiful soul reggae rhythm as Trevor (Drums) and Lloyd (Bass) Robinson set the foundations, while One Blood provide the Dub mix.

A true love's lament, a song of hope, serenity and pure vibes. Label head Chuggy slides behind the mixing desk for an extended Discomix that stretches, loops and dubs the vocal and dub back forth, to close a glimpse at this uniquely British phenomenon, taking reggae closer to it's heart and soul.

Acid Bhangra Rarities & Re Edits
Acid Bhangra Rarities & Re Edits (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SPICE 2. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Acid Agah (original 1994 dubplate mix)
  2. Rani (edit)
  3. Nachdi Drums (edit)
  4. Balle Shava (edit)
Review: The Masaala label are laying claim to a unique curio from the '90s here, unearthing the forgotten sounds of Cutmaster Singh from Leicester. This unsung DJ legend was amongst those trying to fuse acid house and bhangra, and on this 12" we're treated to a selection of edits that do a mighty fine job of crossing the cultural divide to bring the infectious energy of Indian music into a dancefloor context. First up is a dubplate from 1994 titled 'Acid Agah', which rides a bubbling 303 and resplendent strings to create a jaw-dropping showpiece. 'Rani' is steeped in bashy '80s drums and more of that lysergic throbbing, offset by a stunning female vocal, while 'Nachdi Drums' unsurprisingly leans in hard on percussion to whip up a frenetic energy that is as much techno as it is bhangra. 'Balle Shava' takes things back to a kind of new beat freakiness which will appeal to old-skool diggers looking for something spicy in their sets.

Presents Remixes From The Dungeon
Cat: GAMM 150. Rel: 22 Oct 20
  1. I'm In Love Dancin' (7:03)
  2. Imma Phreak (6:22)
Review: The irrepressible Gamm label knows a thing or two about disco, funk and soul. Yet more irrefutable evidence for that claim comes from this tidy 12" two tracker featuring some lost remixes. 'I'm In Love Dancin' takes source sounds from Arthur Russell's classic 'Is It All Over My Face' and repurposes them with gangling percussive lives, sunny flutes and mad horns to make for something that will shake your body loose. Flip it over for the steamy, sensuous, intense disco stomps of 'Imma Phreak' complete with fame coos and cries and plenty of dance floor clout. The legendary Rahaan and DJ Emanuel are in fine form here.

Review: Denie Corbett, Marva Hicks, Susan Beaubian, Sylvia Striplin and Vivian Prince are Eighites Ladies, a vocal ensemble best known for their hit 'Turned On To You'. An iconic rare groove gem from the 80s, it has since been sampled any number of times by giants like A Tribe Called Quest. An edited version has been put out before on an Expansion 7" but an extended version has alway been sought after. Well, here it is along with 'Give Me Your Love', a solo tune from Sylvia. 'Sing Me' also makes the cut to ensure this soul gem is an essential pick up.

  4. Iner - "Respectfull Kind Music" (5:01)
  5. Scruscru - "Surfin' On Hokusai's Waves" (5:04)
  6. Buzz Compass - "That Nighter" (4:49)
Review: Belarus' Iner launches a new label with a strong cast of international names all pushing a deep and distinguished strain of house music for those who want soul and invention in equal measure. Tilman is up first with 'Sweet Dreamer', a mellow, looped up roller. Sune's 'Flutes' takes a breezier approach shaped out by fluttering jazz funk motifs. Yann Polewka celebrates the sweetest Philly strings and some classic vocal licks for a disco-infused burner you can't help but love. Iner himself keeps things loose and organic on the wonderful 'Respectfull Kind Music', while Scruscru goes for a sleek approach to chopped up funky house. That leaves it to Buzz Compass to get heady and hazy with the bass-leaning cuts coursing through 'That Nighter'.

  1. Cosmic Intergalactic Nebula Boogie (6:39)
  2. Leapy Looker (6:13)
  3. Men Skating With Men (7:52)
Review: Some two years after last treating us to a tasty trio of re-edits, mystery scalpel fiend JB Edits delivers more hot-to-trot reworks via the hilariously named Sosilly Edits imprint. The standout for us is A-side 'Cosmic Intergalactic Nebula Boogie', a tight and tidy, club-focused rearrangement of a suitably spacey, late 1970s disco romp that comes stacked high with soaring orchestration, good grooves, extra-percussive sections for the dancers and plenty of spacey sounding synthesizer flourishes. Over on the B-side, 'Leapy Looker' is a languid but impactful dance through sweet and soulful disco pastures, while 'Men Skating With Men' is a roller-disco ready rearrangement of a lesser-known electro-boogie gem.

  1. What 'Em Doing Is My Business (Altroy & Jr Rhythmic Treatment) (3:19)
  2. What 'Em Doing Is My Business (3:20)
Review: For their latest trick, Austrian imprint Record Shack has decided to breathe new life into a sought-after slab of obscure 1979 soul sweetness, Gregory Jolly's 'What 'Em Doing Is My Business'. You'll find the original version - a fine fusion of Clavinet and Hammond-splashed cosmic soul blessed with funky bottom-end and a superb lead vocal from Mr Jolly - on the flip, with Altroy & Jr's "Rhythmic Treatment" on the A. It's a slightly weightier and heavier treatment, with the duo adding subtle new percussion while re-editing key sections. While rather good - and definitely more danceable - it's not really radically different to the must must-have original mix.

Review: Boston's A-grade record digger, funk and soul boffin and master edit maker Kon is back with his Gang for this tidy 7" that also features Rick James. It is once again an edit aided by Kon's long time engineer Caserta, with slick, life affirming jazz tinged and super funky production. Soul Supreme is on keys, the knotted bass comes from Xander Vrienten and together they all serve up a real late summer jam that could be 50 years old. The dub is just as delicious on the flip, with more room for the lux and authentic production and very real musicianship to shine through

  2. Pit Stop (5:50)

Review: Munir straps in for a full throttle ride through some brilliantly cosmic disco grooves here, with opener 'Racer' being a super cool and super smooth ride on glossy arps and far-sighted pads that will elevate anyone's sprits. 'Pit Stop' is a more broken journey on rugged drums and rickety hits and then 'Finish Line' smooths out once more and goes intergalactic. 'Interlinked' is the explosive melodic closer, with tough arps and pixelated pads all adding up to a thrilling and hi NRG ride that is part retro, part futuristic, fully awesome.

  2. Sex & Love Affair (7:44)
Review: Apparently it has been six months in the making but finally Kiko Navarro makes a big arrival into the Rocksteady Disco family with the impossibly upbeat and joyous 'E-MA GIN'. It's a tropical and steamy cut with chanting vocals and pounding drums. The whole is on an upward trajectory that sweeps you right off your feet. On the reverse is 'ex & Love Affair', a string-laced disco stomper with a smile as wide as the Atlantic and gurgling cosmic synths that take you on a real adventure. These are two full flavour, brilliantly characterful cuts for any party.

Review: Z Records founder Dave Lee continues to celebrate 30 years of his iconic house and disco label with an ongoing series of various artist EPs. The fourth instalment is another belter opened up by the boss himself in Disco Blend form. He serves up libidinous synths and steamy vocals that get you on your toes and then sinks into a smooth and seductive deep house mould for his remix of Mistura's 'Smile. On the flip, disco don The Revenge works his magic on a lush afro disco cut and then comes a The Reflex version of The Secret Life Of Us which has big strings and a tight rhythm section all bringing the sunshine.

  3. Disco Massamba (6:06)
  4. Parang-A-Teng (6:09)
Review: Few disco and boogie DJs can boast record collections deeper than the one owned by Superior Elevation chief Tom Noble. It's this access to obscure, little-known gems that makes his regular re-edit releases so darn checkable. You'll find plenty dusty, rare revisions on the Brooklyn-based digger's latest EP for Razor 'N' Tape. Exhibit A: the low-slung, dub disco-goes-Latino flex of "They Came To New York", which exhibits a similar sonic space to early '80s heroes Konk. Also impressive is the high octane, jazz guitar-powered Afro-disco brilliance of "Disco Massamba", and "Parang-A-Teng", a chant-along tropical disco workout rich in heavy bass, delay-laden piano stabs and woozy female vocals. We haven't a Scooby what records he's been playing around with, but the resultant reworks are ace.

Review: The inexorable rise of Purple Disco Machine continues, as his wholehearted tribute to machine disco originators Hot Streak, Patrick Cowley and Giorgio Moroder - the throbbing, anthem-like "Body Funk" - is given a deserved single release. The producer's own "Extended Mix" is quickly followed on side A by a punchy Claptone remix that places the original's sampled vocals over a suitably massive backing track high on piano stabs and big room house grooves. Over on side B, the mighty Carl Cox re-imagines the cut as a cowbell-driven chunk of techno/electrofunk fusion, while Dom Dolla douses it in mind-bending electronics, thrusting analogue bass and glitchy, hard-wired house beats.

Review: Tino Piontek aka Purple Disco Machine is the man behind the anthems "My House", "Devil In Me" and more recently "Love For Days" with Boris Dlugosch. The Dresden native's next dancefloor bomb is "Dished" (Male Stripper) for Australian imprint Club Sweat. This mash-up of Man Parrish and Ellis D is a roaring and neon-lit disco inferno that's sure to burn up a dancefloor near you soon. 1. They Speak Colour (5:41)

Review: Ron's Reworks, a series of scalpel jobs and lightly beefed-up reworks from Crazy P co-founder Jim Baron AKA Ron Basejam, has now reached its fourth volume. Predictably, the included material is every bit as well-crafted as its' similarly inclined predecessors. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

From an early age Troy fell in love with R&B music and at 18 he joined a reformed Joey Dee & The Starlighters following in the footsteps of Jimi Hendrix.By the mid-seventies Troy had teamed up with singer/songwriter/producer Billy Terrell who recorded him on his own composition -I've Always Had You- for De-Lite Records, a superb slice of proto-disco and modern soul. The song was a hit for De-Lite and heralded the now legendary album Tearin' Me To Pieces featuring the track released here...I Wanna Give You Tomorrow...

Review: Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, was an American blues, soul, and funk musician, singer-songwriter and a more than flamboyant showman who knew how to work his electric guitar. Although he recorded music for over 40 years, his highest chart position came in 1997 with 'A Real Mother For Ya.' Now legendary Dutch remixer Ben Liebrand serves up three subtly different reworks that bring it right up to date and ready to do damage on the dancefloor. The horns, the bubbling bass, the chunky claps, it all adds up to a sure fire disco explosion that oozes funk and musicality.

Review: A couple of years ago French crate digger Charles Bals invited us to "Club Meduse", an imaginary Riviera club where the music was always obscure, European and decidedly mid-80s. Here he opens the doors once more, delivering an open-air friendly soundtrack heavy on rare private press gems, overlooked beauties and the kind of cuts that most would consider Balearic (even if they may have been more popular in Italy and France). Highlights are plentiful, from the eccentric instrumental of Voyage De Charme's fretless bass-powered "Hotel Des Savanes" and the soft-focus, flamenco-tinged bliss of Claude Miss' "Paco Ye Adama", to the sun-kissed jazz-funk/synth-pop fusion of Marc Et Frank's "Cap'tain Coke" and the reggae-zouk quirkiness of Les 36 15's "Zoulous! Review: The Armed Gang was a Vicenza-based outfit formed in the early '80s, comprised of producer Maurizio 'Sangy' Sangineto with vocalists Joe Bunch, Kenny Claiborne and James Otis White Jr. - who were all stationed at a nearby US military base. Due to difficulties keeping the band members together after their return across the Atlantic, the band broke up after a mere three years. Their sole self-titled LP is a classic disco gem for those that know, featuring some slick expressions in Italo synth-funk crossover. This reissue courtesy of Guerssen imprint Espacial Discos is much needed, given the exorbitant price the original fetches on the secondhand market.

Review: Dark Entries is humbled to continue digging through the archives of legendary producer Patrick Cowley. While best known for his production on chart-topping cybernetic disco anthems such as Sylvester's 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' or his own 'Menergy', Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, left us with a substantial body of work. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, and the recent Mechanical Fantasy Box. Some Funkettes, the latest addition to this series, is a collection of previously unreleased cover songs recorded from 1975-1977. These raw, unembellished tributes both showcase Cowley's early musical interests and chart the development of his production techniques.

Review: During their continuing trawls through Patrick Cowley's archives, Dark Entries has uncovered a string of cover versions that the late, great San Francisco-based producer recorded between 1974 and '77. They've now decided to gather them together on Some Funkettes, a synthesizer-fired set that more than lives up to its title. Perhaps the most headline-grabbing number is a 10-minute re-creation of Donna Summer's Giorgio Moroder-produced electro-disco masterpiece, 'I Feel Love' - a record that Cowley famously remixed, but here re-imagines as a more spacey instrumental workout - but there's plenty elsewhere across the CD that's arguably even better. For proof, check Cowley's colourful synth-funk versions of 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' and 'Do It Any Way You Wanna', and his brilliant interpretations of Herbie Hancock's 'Chameleon' (here re-named 'Spiked Punch').
