Review: Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artists Allie X - real name Alexandra Ashley Hughes - is a great representative for the resurgent live electro-synth scene. Emerging from the Toronto indie circuit in the mid-2000s, it was a relocation to Los Angeles, a heartland for neon sounds, and early work with producers Circuit and Billboard that first saw an identity begin to form, which is as retro as it is futuristic, picking up scores of fans along the way, including Katie Perry no less. Girl With No Face is her latest long form, and sees the artist again stick her flag confidently in the ground. Tunes bounce, track, soar, step, pump and - at times - fall apart, emotionally speaking, with clear references to the likes of Ladyhawke, Madonna, Kraftwerk, Cocteau Twins and a-Ha, among others. Definitely one to watch, if you're not already.

There, they frequentlyworked with Black American singers to make singles and albums that were, curiously, then released in Italy rather than the U.S. New Jersey singer Robert Cotter's 1980 set, Timeless, is a particularly good example - especially as it's a fantastic collection of disco, disco-funk and dancefloor soul workouts. Inspired by the ultra-vivid world of 1970s giallo films, they wrote the soundtrack of their dreams using their favourite musical instruments: Minikorg, Jupiter 8, 909, Mellotron, Simmons Rhythm Modules, String Machine, a D-50 & Fender Rhodes. Though the set of inspirations are half a century old, the actual sound of this 13 track EBM, Italo and synthpop monster is decidedly contemporary, preferring wompy, sidechainer kick-carriers and basses abuzz, while huge gated impacts collide with steamier intakes of breath and glassy Italo elements. The ineffably laid-back quality of synthwave and pop blends well with the noirer, gothic components and are nicely joined together via the giallo theme.

Dibango is legendary musician from Cameron who was celebrated for his versatility - he could do it all from jazz to funk to soul, blues to electro to reggae. He was trained in classical piano and formed his own band in the mid 60s before moving to Paris in 1965, where he recorded several albums. Mule Musiq has decided to set the record straight, presenting the full suite of tracks on vinyl for the very first time. It's a pleasingly freewheeling and eccentric affair, with highlights including the dub disco-goes-cosmic quirkiness of 'Disco In The Sky', the ultra dubbed-out, Idjuts Boys-esque 'Girls In The Sky', spaced-out ambient interpretation 'Tripping In The Sky' and the deep, hypnotic techno flex of 'One More In The Sky' being our picks. Fans of wild, out-there goodness will also love the utterly mind-mangling 'Dubbing In The Sky' and spoken word-sporting ambient number 'King Soso In The Sky'.

Review: Everyone Else Is A Stranger by Lindstrom is the Scandi-don's first new solo studio album in four years. It his his sixth overall and thought it only has four tracks, it plays out over more than 40 minutes. Each of the cuts is classic Lindstrom but with subtle new tweaks and additions. They are chord-stacked disco epics that take you on a freeform cosmic voyage to the stars on uptempo rhythms aimed at the dance floor. He plays a Chinese cello and violin for the first time along the way, but the Solina String-Ensemble he has used on every track since his debut still remains. All hail the king of space disco once more.

Review: Brazilian funk and MPB master Tim Maia was brilliant at making music, but less good at coming up with titles for his many great albums. Plenty of them come under his own name - often suffixed by a year - and in all there were 30 albums right up to the year he died in 1998. This self-titled one Mr Bongo is now reissuing on limited apple red and brown vinyl. It packs a real punch and exudes real heat across 12 tracks that fuse his sung-spoken lyrics and funky rhythms with sunny strings and jazzy melodies. Slower songs like 'Sem Voce' are for the romancing hours while plenty of others are pure dancers.
