Review: Passing fashions for jerky post-punk and effervescent dance-pop have elevated this confusingly monikered outfit to hot topic status over the years, but !!! have maintained their own identity throughout. Tapping into a lineage of New York party music that touches on Ze records and Studio 54 whilst also embuing their sound with a punk rock vim and vigour straight from CBGBs, 'Shake The Shudder' might be the most timeless collection of suss, sway and swagger these freaks have put together in their 21 (!) years of filling dancefloors. Chk (chk chk) it out.

Review: Previously spotted on the likes of Rong and Permanent Vacation, San Frandisco troupe 40 Thieves celebrate a decade of sonic conjurations with their massive debut album The Sky Is Yours. Bounding across the groove galaxy with such extensive momentum, it takes up two entire albums. Part one is a full sensory overload: Get hypnotised by chugging analogue weaves on "Face Full Of Fur", get massaged by the soft funk guitar strums and graceful piano licks of "In Your Space", go crazy to the punk-funk struts and slurs of "Les Planetes", take one giant leap for dancefloor kind on the peculiar angularities of "Zott Enough"... However you choose to digest this stunning opus, just make sure you leave space for the second helping.

Review: The second part of 40 Thieves massive debut album, it's yet another immaculate adventure as the San Fran collective explore every corner of the dancefloor with silky, cosmic gusto. Highlights across this sophomore set include the contemporary jazz twinkles of "Rhythm Queen", the infectious Floydian psychedelic riffage of "Automagic" and the emotional synth drama and star-gazing dynamics of "Outer Mission". Sometimes the second part of albums this size seem superfluous, but in the case of 40 Thieves, this is just as perfect as the first part. Accomplished, impressive and essential in every

Review: Delusions Of Grandeur make a stylish entrance into the album game with a sumptuous triple vinyl edition of the 6th Borough Project long player. One Night In The Borough sees Graeme and Craig drop a heady thirteen track selection that covers the sort of warm, low slung, expertly executed multi tempo music which sits between house and disco that the duo have received so much praise for. Stand out tracks include "BURT (The Journey)", a lovely slice of mid-tempo niceness that bumps and shakes in all the right places - the vocal is a killer! Matching this is the twilight house jam "Changin" with Deep Burnt style percussion backed by a killer modulated loop.

Review: Brooklyn-based band 79.5 make music right now, rather than being some long-lost acts from the 80s as you might expect from the cover. The group consists of singer, songwriter and composer Kate Mattison, singer and rapper Lola Adanna, drummer Caito Sanchez, bassist Andrew Raposo and sax player and flautist Izaak Mills. Their self-titled album comes on Razor-N-Tape and captures the sound of New York City perfectly with soul and psychedelic melodies that are hard to match. From 70s underground disco to acid jazz to and sweet pop sounds, they draw on it all for this fine concoction of dancefloor gems, which also serves as a protest at the often all too male dominated world of dance music.

Review: Over the next few weeks, Past Due will be reissuing a swathe of material from The 9th Creation, a Californian funk and soul band whose 1970s and early '80s releases have been extensively sampled over the years. "Reaching For The Top" is one of the band's more intriguing albums. It was initially released in 1977 by legendary NYC label Prelude, and you can tell. While it remains rooted in West Coast funk and soul, the album's nine tracks contain far more nods to disco and Philadelphia soul - rather than the dominant commercial forces in black American music - than almost any of their other albums. Highlights include the rubbery funk hustle of "It Ain't Right", the sugary disco-funk swing of "Why Not Today" and the gospel-tinged brilliance of "He's Coming".

Review: ACR have returned to post-punk-electronica megalabel Mute for a new 'partnership', ensuring that the entirety of their catalogue gets reissued. That being said, the unlike-anything-else-ever-heard-before band are also looking to the future, not shying away from releasing new LPs. Don't get confused; the LP '1982' was not made in 1982, it was made in the last few years, and will be released in 2023. Says it all really. Were the 80s simply better? We don't know, but perhaps a deep-dive into the album's themes can provide an implicit answer. Macuncian rapper Chunky appears throughout the moody industri-funk ensemble's new reverie, giving a present-day voice to a haunting spectre. Overall, though, you've got instrumental styles from Afrobeat, jazz, cosmic, disco, and of course, industrial post-punk, coalescing into a certain ration of wild, wild music - perfect for austere times ahead.

With a spotless vibe pedigree established over the years on Aficionado and Music For Dreams (and his debut LP Aquafusion last year) AVOP digs deep into his colours once again for a true soft-focus sonic safari. The humanised keys of "Mirror Lake", the slinky sexy acid line of "Cloud Two" the underwater soul of "Puls Control" and the loin girding synth ripples of "Rain Theme" are just some of the arresting moments. An essential trip.

Review: The first of two vinyl editions for house/disco megastar Dave latest album 'Metamorphosis'. Beginning with the heartstring-tugging, cello-led 'Windy City Theme' and touching familiar ground on the original, fill-laden, sunshade-touting version of 'Six Billion Dollar Man' - the 'Playout Edit' of which was already released in October - the pressing is loud enough to be playable-out, yet intricate enough to sate Lee's fans with the biggest, most meticulous, experience-honed ears.

Review: Disco mined straight from artisanal-analogue, rather than digital-mechanised, sources, this second part of the vinyl edition - like the first - is produced in collaboration with a 20-piece orchestra. An "album of pure indulgence" - as he calls it - it begins with huge, brass-and-string dominated 'The Philly Avengers' and covers a huge stylistic range, the LP inspired by Lee's memories of the golden era of TV as well as the soundtracks of his favourite childhood TV shows - in which a distinctly analogue sound abounded.

Review: Legendary New York disco producer Patrick Adams takes a trawl through the 1970s catalogue of his widely celebrated P&P Records imprint, picking out some of his favourite cuts - many of which are his own inspired compositions. There are plenty of tracks from his own Cloud One alias, including stone cold classics like "Atmosphere Strut", "Disco Juice" and the superb electro-boogie jam "Flying High" (one of the greatest synth-heavy cuts of the period), as well as such revered tracks as Mart Acuna's much-sampled "Dance Dance Dance" and the Musicmakers' thrillingly heady "Jump, Jump, Jump". Many disco diggers will be familiar with all of these already, but for newcomers The Best of P&P Records offers a great introduction to Adams' intoxicating world.

Review: Given the quality of their output to date, its little surprise to find that Africaine 808's debut album, Basar, is rather special. Built around their now famous polyrhythmic, Afro and Latin-influenced drum machine programming, it begins with a touch of snaking jazz, and climaxes with a dense, uplifting Afro-gospel workout. In between, you'll find 21st century bruk, delicious downtempo torch songs, Juke-influenced Cajun blues, and hard-to-define - but thoroughly engaging - wig-outs. This limited edition vinyl version is also bundled with a bonus 10" containing remixes of the previously unheard "Tummy Tummy" by Highlife types Auntie Flo and Esa; the latter's cosmic, synth-heavy version, featuring a range of additional vocalists and musicians, is particularly potent.

Review: Later this year, crate-digging specialists Cordial Recordings is set to release an album of previously unheard recordings by cult German jazz-fusion combo Afrodisia. To get us in the mood, the London-based label has decided to reissue the band;s sole previous album, 1980's Elephant Sunrise. While the album is best known for the impeccable jazz-funk sweetness of "Sugar Free" - recorded, like much of the rest of the album, by a mixture of locals and guest musicians from a nearby U.S army base - there's much to enjoy throughout, from the psychedelic heaviness of opener "TMFF" and elastic dancefloor workout "Psychic Summers", to the slap-bass-propelled funk-rock of "Wild Turkey" and intense, full-throttle closer "Zugabe (Encore)".

Here they debut their first album, Universo, which plunges into the cosmos through a distinctly lo-fi dance lens. With a slew of vocal performances from Audrey Janssens to Vicky Who?, our favourite track has to be a tie between 'Vocal Ghost' and 'Liquid Fantasy'. Perhaps comparable to Bicep for cosmonauts.

Review: Omar S presents this remastered reissue of the 1979 album by this Singaporean disco band led by Ardo Guerzo and Jeremiah Star on his revered FXHE imprint. The name of the band is an acronym of their first names respectively. They mixed disco and salsa in their hit "Classical Salsa". They covered the Ohio Players' classic hit "Sweet Sticky Thing" and they named their 1976 released album after it. Star was also in the short lived Funkgus outfit which is worth checking out, if you can find it! A true diggers delight for those that knew it seems, but now brought to a wider audience, thankfully. Originally on Baal, a UK label founded in the mid '70s by Jay Shotam of October Cherries. The original Baal label was founded in Singapore by his band in the late '60s until it became defunct in 1980.

Review: It's getting increasingly difficult to easily pigeonhole the work of Dave Aju. Since first making his name with the minimal techno-influenced Open Wide album in 2008, the San Francisco producer has variously turned his attention to fuzzy, touchy-feely deep house, jazz-flecked beats and stargazing, techno-influenced pop. Black Frames, his third album, is even harder to pin down. Blessed with his own hazy, atmospheric vocals, it variously touches on deep house, skewed pop, starburst electronica, Outkast style pop-funk (the growling "Bee's Birth") and Bullion-ish cut-up downtempo beats ("When We Drift"), all whilst retaining the producer's trademark laidback warmth.

Review: Akin Nathan's Ijama is one of those rather mythical artists that related just one album, but an album that has endured through time and remains a classic to this day. It was a band formed from Akin Nathaniel, Big John Oaikhena, Didi Lead, Frankie Ntoh Song, Geoffrey Omadehbo, Johnny Woode and Yakubu Daniel and their 'Sweet Country' came in 1982 in their native Nigeria. It's a lush tapestry of sounds from across the world, all with an Afro twist - funk, soul, world and country all feature next to boogie and Afrobeat with plenty of hooky vocals.

Review: Kalita has a fine record of unearthing holy grail records and reissuing them to rabid fans around the world. The latest is a real corker even by their standards - an unrelated album of soul, gospel and disco songs from Al-Dos Band. It is part of the first drop for Record Store Day 2021 and immediately melts the heart. 'Don't Come Smiling Back' is a deeply emotive slow jam with an impassioned vocal and pained chords, while 'Your Presence' is a much more rapturous and uplifting bit of musical worship, 'Some Things Don't Mean A Thing' is a robust and rugged bit of strident disco with magic funk riffs, and 'Love Jones Coming Down' is a real dance floor heater.

Review: Arabic music crate-diggers Habibi Funk have so far proved adept at unearthing killer material from the 1970s and '80s that joins the dots between indigenous styles and dominant Western genres. Their latest collection focuses on the work of 1970s Egyptian band Al Massireen, an outfit funded by one of the country's most successful producers of the period, Hany Shenoda. Modern Music, so called because the band was Shenoda's attempt to modernize Arabic music, includes tracks taken from a wealth of forgotten cassettes and albums. Musically, it's rather special; a heady blend of Arabic vocals and instrumentation, orchestral disco influences, blue-eyed soul, grown-up pop and dreamy West Coast style rock.

Review: Get ready to work that belly with this intense midriff workout direct from Lebanon. It is BBE who have secured the rights to reissue this classic floor filling album from Lebanese maestro Ihsan Al Munzer. Originally released in 1979, it's a cult classic fusion of funk, soul, world, folk, country and disco that is laced with squelchy Moog goodness and endlessly loose groves. "Jamileh" is the one that most often gets people in a spin with its intoxicating synth leads, snaking bass and playful sense of cheekiness. "Once A Year (Zourouni)" is another standout that is a little more romantic.

Review: Aldorande is a slick band with a positive sound. They impressed us last summer with their Summer Body EP and now the crew finds its way back to the acclaimed Favorite label in France once more. On this full length they casts free from planet earth and head off to explore interplanetary landscapes with their usual and distinctive jazz-funk outlook. Opener 'Fenetres Sur Le Temps' immediately has your head amongst the twinkling stars, while your rump is tied to the funky bassline. There is lush and loose drum work on 'Vortex Des Possibles' as well as splashy cymbals and upbeat funky riffs that melt the heart, 'Oracle' is a tight number with lush Rhodes and prickly perc tumbling free. A fine album.

Review: Alek Lee builds on his long-standing relationship with Antinote by finally coming through with his debut album, You. As one of the most respected DJs operating in Tel Aviv, not to mention playing in bands like Shame On Us and Project Runaway, he's built up a reputation for expansive music knowledge and an instinct for the obscure, which makes him fit in perfectly amongst the Antinote crew. There's a washed-out, surf reverb mood to the likes of 'Eretz Acheret', and his laconic vocal delivery gets embellished by guest spots from the likes of Keren Ilan and Eyal Talmudi. For Balearic sun seekers and reflective road trippers, this is an album rich in feeling to burrow its way into your heart for a lifetime.

Review: Much like the rest of the labels who have re-released Alessandro Alessandroni's material over the last three or four years, Four Flies Records have understood what this Italian maestro represented to the wider electronic movement. Sadly, the man passed away almost one year ago, but he has left a dynasty for years to come, and this is made all the more true given that this latest release, Lost & Found, has never even seen the light of day, until now. Branded as a soundtrack, this is a perfect representation of what the man did, and that was to produce music with a vision and a theme in mind, regardless of whether it truly existed or not. In fact, these gorgeous slices of exotica would certainly make for a delightful OST, with everything from ambient to disco, jazz and funk featuring across its 17 masterful tracks. This is inimitable gear - and warmly recommended.

Review: Japan will always be a source of great wonderment to us over the rest, as well as being a hugely inspirational land when it comes to all manner of cultures. Take electronic music, and specifically house and techno, which have always had their own distinctive take on the genre and that is now tapped into as Alex From Tokyo Presents Japan Vibrations Vol. 1, a tasteful compilation that transports you to the Far East and some of its finest moments from the 80s and 90s. Each tune comes from a trailblazer of the time and elements of ambient, downtempo, dub, world beats, deep house, new jazz and techno are all fused together into a faultless and tasteful collection.

Review: Erol Alkan's 2005 Bugged Out mix was a gateway release for many, soundtracking the entrance into club land, yet also introducing these virgin ears to more esoteric strains of music via the accompanying Bugged In Selection. Some seven years on, Alkan and the evergreen club brand have revisited the concept with a second edition, and like the inaugural release, the Phantasy Sound boss's ever lasting love for the vinyl format has seen a selection of tracks make the translation to this double vinyl release. Six tracks from the Bugged Out mix appear, with the Italo disco of Amin Peck brushing shoulders with Model 500 and an Obi Blanche edit of the Ron Hardy classic "Sensation", while the Bugged In Selection sees some psyche-folk fare from Buffalo Springfield and Space Lady among other gems.

Review: Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artists Allie X - real name Alexandra Ashley Hughes - is a great representative for the resurgent live electro-synth scene. Emerging from the Toronto indie circuit in the mid-2000s, it was a relocation to Los Angeles, a heartland for neon sounds, and early work with producers Circuit and Billboard that first saw an identity begin to form, which is as retro as it is futuristic, picking up scores of fans along the way, including Katie Perry no less. Girl With No Face is her latest long form, and sees the artist again stick her flag confidently in the ground. Tunes bounce, track, soar, step, pump and - at times - fall apart, emotionally speaking, with clear references to the likes of Ladyhawke, Madonna, Kraftwerk, Cocteau Twins and a-Ha, among others. Definitely one to watch, if you're not already.

Review: Some eight years after it first landed in stores, Almunia's "New Moon" has become something of a cult classic. Copies of the original limited, hand-numbered vinyl pressing now change hands for eye-watering sums online, so Claremont 56 boss Paul 'Mudd' Murphy has decided to do a repress. The album remains Almunia's greatest work, offering an attractive, atmospheric and calming blend of stoned space rock, glistening Balearic motifs, slowly unfurling soundscapes, gentle dub disco, psychedelic intent and effects-laden, progressive rock style dreaminess. Whether you missed out first time around or are just discovering it, the album is well worth picking up.
