(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight
Cat: FME 002. Rel: 20 Sep 22
(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight (3:47)
Hot Tonight (part II) (4:06)
Review: Here's a nod to late 70s disco, funk and boogie featuring some of the best NYC musicians to grace the scene in the past 20 years, and recorded at Soul Fire Studios featuring over two dozen musicians. Members of El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap- Kings, Antibalas and more are featured on 10th Street's '(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight' which is a classic and timeless disco funk affair featuring an absolutely sublime string section. Over on the flip, the slower and more emotive 'Hot Tonight' (part II) makes for feelgood vibes on the dancefloor later in the night, featuring sensual vocals to boot.

(Livin' In) New York City (3:26)
Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

EARL's Theme (Tom Noble version) (4:32)
EARL's Theme (4:00)
Review: 10th Street is one of those devotional funk projects which sounds like it would wholly pass for the real deal, despite being made in recent times by a crack team of NYC musicians from bands including El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap-Kings and Antibalas. Following Mighty Eye's release of the group's self-titled debut album in 2022 comes this single, which tasks Tom Noble with whipping up a remix of 'E.A.R.L.'s Theme'. Whether you plump for the juiced up Noble remix or the sizzling groove of the original, you have the chance to cop some genuine dancefloor dynamite right here.

Passion
The Man I Feel
Review: Emotional Rescue dig out a quintessential private press curio and give it a tasteful 7" release that should tickle all lovers of blue-eyed soul with a subtle electronic kink. There's a smooth pop nous at the heart of "Passion", but also a naivety in the production that hints at the bedroom studio roots of 4AM's limited forays into recorded work. There's space for Fairlight-esque stabs and something approaching an acid bassline, but it's all framed in a mellifluous slice of melodious groove. "The Man I Feel" takes the A side and steers it into playful instrumental territory to great effect, the consummate 80s dub out.

Club Level (Eli Escobar remix) (5:02)
Review: RNT welcomes Brooklyn-based band 79.5 to the family with the first single from their forthcoming eponymous LP. Soulful and psychedelic, the haunting melodies of Club Level float above a steady strutting rhythm section, punctuated by moaning baritone saxophone and drenched in washy reverb.

NYC mainstay Eli Escobar crafts a masterful remix that leans into 80s nostalgia, with a soundscape and arrangement nothing short of perfection.

Terrorize My Heart (Disco dub) (3:49)
Terrorize My Heart (Tall Black Guy Bounce remix) (3:44)
Review: The faultless Big Crown label revisits one of its biggest hits from back in 2016. New York City-based collective 79.5 is made up of seven musicians and singers and their gorgeous 'Terrorize My Heart' 45rpm reached some heart aching disco highs. Now it comes with in two new forms - the disco dub with its seductive drums and bass and airy, soulful vocal, and a remix from hip hop royalty Tall Black Guy. He deconstructs the tune and rebuilds it as a smoky, jazz tinged slow motion hip hop beat. The chords are warm and cuddly, the vocal is more meandering but still acts as the perfect icing on a delicious cake.

What's Shakin (4:43)
Much Too Much (3:58)
Review: 9th Creation's Superheros album was a treasure trove of soulful disco tunes that have since become hard to find and ever more desirable. Now the Dynamite Cuts 45s Series has two of the gems from it on this special new 7". It's the first time there a-side has been on its own piece of vinyl and that tune 'Whats Shakin' goes first. It's gloriously glossy and high quality disco with funky horns and big bass, a lush vocal hook and luxuriant sound. 'Much Too Much' is on the reverse and is another floor facing disco tune with a heart swelling vocal and smooth chords that can often fetch L150 on its own.

Summertime (instrumental) (4:06)
Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

All I Do (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit instrumental) (4:05)
Review: Japanese live outfit, A Hundred Birds has a thing for creating classic covers. Over the course of their career, they've recorded countless covers, including organic, string-laden interpretations of techno scene staples such as "Blackwater" (originally recorded by Octave 8) and "Knights of the Jaguar" (The Aztec Mystic). Last year they offered up another warm and wonderous cover, this time of Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do". Here it gets a new lease of life courtesy of scalpel fiend Ryu The Man, who has delivered tightened-up, floor-friendly vocal and instrumental edits of the warm, rich, soulful and undeniably summery cover version. Both are rather good, though it's the vocal version that will win over dancers.

Lit Up (The remix) (3:51)
Review: A Skillz and Krafty Kuts are veteran names by now but at one option they were some of the hottest new DJs and producers in the game. They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Now they look to the roots of the sounds they used to draw from and serve up a new single on Jam City that is all about disco. 'Lit Up' has loose, jumbled drums and funk basslines with some great vocal flourishes up top from Gizelle Smith. A remix on the flip takes things into deeper new soul territory.

Review: Every once in a while, a release is slung our way that charms us so deeply that we're not sure what angle approach it from. Deliberately retro, but with one foot in the cosmic, Star Creature are a Chicago-based label whose take on space disco is extra janky and electronic. AVOP's new track 'Purple' is rattlesnaking and sultry, delving into a pitch-perfect rumination of a disco sound that 70's producers could only dream of achieving. Coming to purple 7" vinyl, the track makes "Russian violet cyber grapes rain in Chicago", as asserted by the artist.

Lost In Palms (4:55)
Review: The diffuse hues and retro-feeling colours of the artwork on this new 45rpm from Star Creature perfectly embody the downtempo and Balearic sounds within. They come from A Vision Of Panorama who seems to ever more have the dance floor in sights over his last few releases. That's not to say these are banging tunes - but they do have lovely grooves. 'Piano Sunset' is a real spine tingler with 80s keys and mid tempo drums that come alive with crisp hits and a fresh bassline. 'Lost In Palms' then has a shuffling and low slung groove with nice wet hits. Add in some more lush chords and you have a real pearler.

Windy City Theme (Special 45 version) (4:47)
Metamorphosis (Special 45 version) (5:08)
Review: Dave Lee's "AC Soul Symphony" alias has been releasing delectable and sultry disco since 2005 but reached his magnus opus in 2023 with the release of the "Metamorphosis" LP. Here we find two tracks handpicked from the album and delivered, for the first time, in a 7" format. The single starts much as the album does with the track "Windy City Theme", beautifully scored, recorded, and produced legato strings envelope the track, punctuated with horns and vocals reminiscent of a Love Unlimited Orchestra production. This version of the track has been rearranged, speeding up the pacing of the track and reaching the juicy parts in a really satisfying way. On the flip side we have the title track from the album "Metamorphosis", which is the first time the vocal version has been made available on Vinyl. A bass laden intro gives ways to glistening pianos and those signature strings (have we mentioned how good the strings are?). A more laid back and seductive track than the A side, but no less appealing. Again, due to the limitations of the 7" format, "Metamorphosis" has been expertly rearranged with loving care and attention.

Sneak Previews
Review: PPU shine the light on Leroy Ace Miller, a funk musician hailing from Macon, Georgia, which is where Otis Redding, Little Richard and James Brown all cut their teeth. The label notes Miller got his breakthrough in 1985 with Teacher, released on the indie California label Marina Sound overseen by Ron Patton. The pair would later work together with Ace Miller delivering two dusty lo fi funk cuts for the Baywest label set up by Patton in 1986. Original copies of "Hook Me/Sneak Previews" are fetching upwards of several hundred pounds on the collectors market so a round of applause to PPU for facilitating this official reissue. Miller is now apparently an attorney in Macon, but still dedicates his spare time to recording in his home studio!

Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

It kicks off with a nice languid remix of the classic 'Let Love Be Free' with an extra low slung sleazy bassline beneath the gorgeous vocal. Mighty Mouse's punchy instrumental dub of Don Ray's "Got To Have Nothing" also hits the spot. Review: New funk and soul grooves from Adesha and Vincent Kwok, the Italian vocalist and production duo responsible for a rain-made string of releases on Sleepers Records. 'Life's Too Short' and 'Blame Game' are infectious, talkboxing punchers; the former hears a muted guitar solo in its sultry breakdown, as if to say "don't be afraid of anything that stands in your way", while 'Blame Game' continues to deal with the tumult of difficult relationships, aiming to mood-set your next party with frank DX7 chords and 909s. Review: Adesha and Vincent Kwok come together once more for a new transmission that takes its stylistic cues from "the glittering dance floors of the disco era to Minneapolis-inspired funk." These are lush tunes with gorgeous backing vocals, fine sax sounds and irresistible drums. First is 'Hot Mess' which is a classic disco workout with pumping drums and nice loos percussion under the soaring vocals and cosmic synth rays. In the past he has impressed on Kolour Limited and Banoffee Pies and now goes deep across a pair of jazz tinged deep house gems. That was a deep house track but these two are very much lush and summery disco vibes. 'Halo' opens up with the sort of open-air Mediterranean gorgeousness that has you picturing yourself sipping cocktails by a twinkling ocean in the late afternoon sun. Erobique - "Bach In Afrika" (4:22)
Review: Florence Adooni has been called Ghana's Frafra gospel queen in the past, and with good reason. First single 'Mam Pe'ela Su'ure' arrived in 2021 to widespread acclaim, and she followed up on Philophon with 'Yinne' late last year. Now Adooni is back on the label for a collaboration with German artist Erobique, who is normally found making quirky synth disco cuts. On a visit to Max Weissenfeldt's studio in Ghana, he crossed paths with Adooni and so the lilting, sweetly sentimental 'Mam Tola' was created. The B-side of this single finds Erobique flying solo for 'Bach In Afrika', riding a swift beat from Kung Fu Andoh and flexing on the Hammond organ for an uptempo fusion which might well catch you off guard and make you dance all the same.

Satisfactorize Your Mind (2:45)
Review: The work of obscure, conscious funk outfit Africano has previously proved popular with reissue labels, in part due to the rare nature of their original 1970s releases. This limited 7" single features two of their finest tracks: the fairly well known "Open Your Heart", and 1973's "Satisfactorize Your Mind". While the latter is a string-drenched treat that feels like a dustier, slightly more psychedelic take on the Philadelphia International sound, it's "Open Your Heart" that most impresses. Featuring urgent, passionate vocals, winding horn lines and a stomping funk-soul beat, it remains the outfit's finest moment bar none.

To whet our appetite, they've decided to release the never-before-heard "Malik", a brilliant chunk of jazz-funk fusion that would have got jazz dancers hot under the collar had it appeared when it was originally recorded way back in 1982. On the B-side you'll find the similarly minded "A Fool No Longer", a dancefloor-focused chunk of blue-eyed soul that has previously only been available on obscure 1981 compilation album Rock Aus Der Alten Schule. Review: Still peddling pure and fast jazz-funk disco, and coming straight from the source, Afrodisia are an ingeniously named German band whose stated intent was to transcend colour and creed through the mode of music. The band barely squeezed by with four EPs and an LP to their name; these two new cuts were recorded for a second album, which never saw the light of day. The A cut is the highlight, being the dreamiest and creamiest of the two.

Review: Here's a real curio from the annals of Mexican music culture and the sprawling sound of Cumbia. In the 70s, Jose Maria Fuentes formed Afrosound as a hybrid super group and brought influences from funk, disco, tropical and salsa into the mix for a prolific run of hugely popular cambia party albums. That maybe doesn't exactly account for this rare curio from 1983 though, near the end of Afrosound's main tenure, when they reacted the global cinematic phenomenon of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial by creating a truly whacked out, synth laden freakout strapped to a smoking hot groove. It's surreal and psychedelic, but absolutely tuned up for maximum dancefloor impact.

It was a real anthem for the multi-hour DJ sets at Plastic People, for his cult-ish NTS shows and the parties he played to record obsessives all over the world. Review: Japanese singer-songwriter-producer Akemi Kakihara, better known as AK, is a huge star in her native country-where she's released 15 albums, many topping the charts, along with writing & producing for many other artists as well. Her first album featured a collaboration with close friend Brazilian pianist and composer Eumir Deodato-but she's probably most recognized internationally for Her composition "Say That You Love Me," originally a jazzy ballad, was remixed by Francois K and Eric Kupper in 2001 and released on New York label King Street Sounds. The remix soon became a staple at Body & Soul in both New York and Japan, ultimately topping the dance charts around the world and emerging as the top house anthem in Japan over the next decade-as well as becoming King Street Sounds' all time biggest seller. (The song wasn't the only success story to bloom from this project: visiting Body & Soul for the first time in 2001 to meet Francois K and see and hear the crowd's reaction to the remix, when she also met DJ and party co-founder Danny Krivit. A romance between them blossomed, they married in 2008, and continue to reside in NYC.)

With 7" vinyl singles currently enjoying a renaissance, Krivit suggested AK revisit the landmark track to do another re-work of "Say That You Love" for Most Excellent Unlimited, something noticeably different from the original. AK's new version of her signature tune retains her silky vocal refrain that first seduced listeners, but adds a bubbly keyboard melody and a propulsive snare kick that turns it into a dance floor stomper. Krivit then edited down her new production and the Francois K mix for the first time on 7" release; he felt the song's King Street hit remix arrangement was very strong, so he did his best to maintain it's hit arrangement within the restrictions of a 5:30 min format for the flip side of the single. The result is a must-own 7" that sounds both classic and contemporary at the same time.

Tell Me Baby (3:54)
I Remember (4:01)
Review: Back in June, a copy of Akira Freeze's hitherto unknown single 'Tell Me Baby' appeared on an online auction site and ended up selling for well over $2,000. It sparked Athens of the North boss Euan Fryer into action, as he tracked down the rights to the record in order to reissue it. Little information exists about the record, but we can confirm that it is utterly beguiling. A-side 'Tell Me Baby' is superb, with slick, soulful lead vocals rising above squelchy synth-bass, spacey chords, luscious electronic melodies, twinkling keyboard solos and unfussy drums. Flipside 'I Remember', an even more intergalactic-sounding affair, is arguably even better, making this a very desirable 45.

AkizzBeatzz - "I'm An African" (3:29)
Lego Edit - "Sahara Adventures" (Lego re-edit) (4:58)
Review: AkizzBeatzz and Lego Edit join forces to mutually reinforce what they both do best: making disco edits and reworks of classic funk, soul and Afrobeat, and occassionally offering up the odd original track. The 12" 'African Groove' is a downtempo and weighty meditation on what it means to hail from the continent, with Akizz' A-side 'I'm An African' playfully laying down a diasporic big beat excursion, replete with regional instrumentation and defiant political vocal samples. Lego Edit's 'Sahara Adventures', meanwhile, works a chugging beat around a central algaita line.

Dis-Go Theme (4:40)
Review: Five releases in and Al Bunz and Tone B Nimble switch up things on their Al Tone Edits series, downscaling from 12" releases to dinked 7"s but there is no drop in standards of quality. Dipping into their personal armoury of Disco, Soul, Funk, and Gospel weapons, All Tone come up trumps with the vocal disco burner "Silly" on the A-side, which features some heavily phased trickery that will delight the discotheque dancefloors. On the flip, "Dis-Go Theme" is an exercise in groove laden intensity, with the occasional detour into a vocal passage.

Review: More superlative digging action from Chicago's Nimble and Albumz. "Tsunami" certainly does whip up a storm with its insistent kickdrum thrust and dense layers of keys, guitar, flutes and strings. Sitting somewhere between LA and Wigan, it will please northern soul and straight up funk fans. "Sunburn" lives up to its name, too. A sizzling Afrofunk scorcher with blisteringly tight horns, soft vocals and just a mild disco edge, it's the sound of Lagos mid 70s with a subtle touch of modern editing muscle. Party on.

Review: Edit king Al Tones is back on his own label with two more of his superb studio concoctions. This series has been rolling strong since 2012 and like all of the previous eighth instalments the 12th is a doozy. The a-side 'All The Time' is a trumpet lead bit of high speed metropolitan funk with plenty of jazzy licks and sliding hi hats that seduce you as the grooves unfold. Things take a deeper, slower turnoff the flip for 'Run It.' This one has a more steamy sax line taking charge over chunkier beats and nice rich Rhodes chords. File under classy party starters.

Paul Alan aka DTCHPLNES, delivers the smooth latin driven car cruiser "Provider" and the sun blissed slow skate vibes of "Charlevoix", which also sounds great on 45. The two track 7 inch is wrapped in a treasure map jacket with a compass foil stamp and includes a postcard.

Got To Get Your Love (Muro Diguma edit - instrumental) (4:15)
Review: The latest set of Diguma Edits sees dusty-fingered Japanese digger-turned-re-editor DJ Muro take his scalpel to 'Got to Get Your Love' by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, a suspenseful and action-packed 1980 number from producers Peter Brown and Gary Davis. Muro first cuts down and compresses the ten-minute vocal version, making merry with the track's unusual combination of classic disco grooves, showtunes-style orchestration and eccentric vocals. Over on the flip he does a similar job on the slightly different instrumental take, in turns showcasing the track's crunchy guitars, warming electric pianos, spacey synths and grandiose orchestration.

Review: This is a super sought after slice of 1980s disco goodness that was sampled by UK house producer Midland. He used bits of it on his huge, and we mean huge, 2016 summer anthem 'Final Credits' and that only served to send the price of the original up further. You'd be lucky if you can find an original copy of the 7" for under L125 these days. This official reissue has your back though and has been fully remastered with replica artwork in time to celebrates the 40th anniversary of its original release.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing on outer sleeve, also the record has light surface marks/scratches, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

Second time around for Ali B's Afika NX-sporting bomb 'Swing It', a weighty fusion of electro, rap and - whisper it quietly - electro-swing that first surfaced earlier this year. This edition doesn't boast the original, but instead a fresh rework from bootleg remix king Jim Sharp. His take is little less than a total re-imagining, with Afika NX's rap sounding deliciously laidback atop a boom-bap beat rich in woozy electric piano chords and sampled sax lines. Over on the flip, another vintage Ali B cut gets the remix treatment, as Utah Saints manbutt dons the Beatvandals alias to re-frame sleazy rap jam 'Music Saves Me' (featuring Jungle Brothers' Baby Bam) as a cheery slab of disco-boogie fun. Basically, it's a guaranteed party-starter.

Review: You'd be hard pushed to find a better label than Hawaii's Izipho Soul when it comes to heart aching soul sounds. As it fast approaches its 100th release it is Jesus Alvarez who lands on this new 7" with two tunes taken from an album that has not knowingly been released and never maddest past the promotional test pressing on Columbia. Both just are exceptional and are from the same recording period as 'Sooner or Later', a 7" on Polydoor, with Alvarez being well known at the time for his Sylvia Robinson connection and productions and performances on The Willow Band’s ‘Willowman’ and The Nicky Newarkers ‘Woman’.

Review: An iconic electro boogie / go-hop party jam from 1981, everything about AM FM's delivery on their debut single screams funk perfection; the big synth splashes, the sprightly keytar, the super-juiced basslines and the belting vocals all fuse in such harmony it still dazzles over 35 years later. Here we're treated to two subtly crafted versions from maestro Muro as the vocals take predominance on side A while side B is all about the immense instrumental which breaks down to its bare breaks before building back up again with pure party panache. Timeless.

Review:  We will always be stickers for heart aching, lo-fi soul and R&B fusions on neat little 7"s. This new one from Love Touch perfectly fits the bit and finds Amalia melt modern funk and boogie with classic, buttery soul vocals. 'Don't Be Ashamed Of Love' rides on crunchy hits with bold bass notes. It's a sparse, cold arrangement but that vocal adds real warmth while the subtle boogie vibes shine through. On the flip, the pace picks up and your rump will wiggle even more with 'in My Bed' bringing slick and bumpy beats and other exquisite vocal.

Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

Review: American Chocolate has but one solo entry on Discogs, and that is the 1974 EP M.I.A., which is the one and only release listed for the DTR label. It's the B-side from that two-track EP that is reissued here on its own 7", with an instrumental version on the flip. 'Don't Bug Me' is a gloriously sweet and heartwarming bit of soul-drenched boogie. The buttery smooth vocals make a deep impact, while the nimble disco-funk drums and rump-wiggling boogie bassline cannot fail to make you move. It's a warm, uplifting sound that will get any floor in a spin. The instrumental allows the chords and funky bass riffs a little more room to shine and make a different but just as strong impact.

The first is a slow disco mix of The Ananda Project's 'Cascades Of Colour' which is lush, low riding and built on loopy drums with silky synths that are finished with some sprinkles of cosmic melody up top. Sublime. Blaze's 'We Are One' then gets a special Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix which has more astral synth work ringing out from a tight and funk arrangement with lush bass lines and nice organic drums.

Review: A contemporary slice of Yolngu-funk direct from East Arnhem Land, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band bring a fresh admixture of funk, house and boogie, all brought together by an inimitable Indigenous Australian tradition. A dirt-road-tested party-jam led by the blind, keytar-weilding elder Andrew Gurruwiwi - and delivered in his mother tongue, Yolngu Matha - 'Gatjumak' is a rip-roaring, texturally rich feast for the ears. The previously-unreleased remix comes courtesy of Brisbane producers Walrii and RU! and twists the Yolngu-funk number with a poly-rhythmic, broken-beat shuffle, all whilst retaining the heart and energy of the original.
