Passion (40 gram vinyl 7")
Cat: ERC 085. Rel: 28 Oct 19
  1. Passion
  2. The Man I Feel
Review: Emotional Rescue dig out a quintessential private press curio and give it a tasteful 7" release that should tickle all lovers of blue-eyed soul with a subtle electronic kink. There's a smooth pop nous at the heart of "Passion", but also a naivety in the production that hints at the bedroom studio roots of 4AM's limited forays into recorded work. There's space for Fairlight-esque stabs and something approaching an acid bassline, but it's all framed in a mellifluous slice of melodious groove. "The Man I Feel" takes the A side and steers it into playful instrumental territory to great effect, the consummate 80s dub out.

Kalatashew Waga (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: MPR 007. Rel: 13 Jan 16
  1. Kalatashew Waga (5:29)
  2. Kalatashew Waga (Andras Fox remix) (4:36)
Review: Unpredictable Dublin label maintain their capacity to surprise here, digging into the vaults of Ethiopian funk mob to reissue their 1984 accidental houser "Kalatashew Waga". Originating from the sole Admas album, Sons of Ethiopia, "Kalatashew Waga" has grown into something of a cult player amongst the more considered selectors over the years and gets pressed up for 12" by Major Problems replete with a fresh remastering job from the master Thomas P. Heckmann. Fans of the gliding style of lo-fi boogie PPU specialise in will love this track. Complementing the original, Major Problems have scored a brand new remix from long term Admas fan Andras Fox that brushes the track with some soft-hued new age bliss.

BAH 031 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BAH 031. Rel: 05 Dec 16
  1. En Trance (5:03)
  2. Schwarzen Mer (5:45)
  3. City People (4:33)
  4. Die Marinette Der Zeit (5:21)
Review: The Bahnsteig 23 crew are flying towards the end of the year with a salvo of essential wares from their established crew and new faces alike. Sweden's Albion Venables has been doing the business on labels such as Ambassador's Reception and Macadam Mambo for the past seven years, and his first turn on Bahnsteig doesn't disappoint. In a flurry of eclecticism, the mood veers from the bubbling kosmische tones of "En Trance" through to the schlocky funk of "Schwarzen Mer", mixing live band dynamics with quirky electronics and keeping the groove delightfully authentic. The diversity maintains on the flip as "City People" taps up a moody New York flavour and "Die Marinette Der Zeit" strikes a more classic funk note.

BAH 045 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BAH 045. Rel: 04 Jun 18
  1. Agre (7:28)
  2. Pune (5:08)
  3. Hubli (5:13)
  4. Kulem (7:06)
Review: After coming to light with his crucial edits on Les Edits Du Golem, Alexis Le-Tan has gone on to become one of the shining lights on Bahnsteig 23's roster of deviant discoid dissenters, and he's burning up as he comes careering onto the label's 45th release. "Agre" is a steroid-injected blast of 80s firepower, all stomping drums and a dazzling assortment of dancefloor-engineered synth parts. "Pune" is a slower, groovier jam but it's no less striking in its make-up. "Hubli" takes a more unusual path away from the party, into a hard to define zone somewhere between soundtrack, home listening jam and un-nerving warm up-not warm up. "Kulem" finishes the EP off on a more steady tone, but still the rich, glossy production details come spilling out of this bombastic jam just like the other tracks on this loud and proud record.

Alfa EP (12")
Cat: FUDISW 001. Rel: 22 Feb 19
  1. U (I Got It) (4:26)
  2. Cocchetti (5:06)
  3. Cornae (5:01)
Review: There's a fair amount of mystery surrounding this release, which the accompanying press release claims was designed for "cruising through the Tuscany countryside, riding shotgun in a vintage Alfa [Romeo]". So what's on offer? A-side "U (I Got It)" is a bouncy, stop-start disco-house affair that sits somewhere between vintage "French Touch" house, original Italo-house and the pumping antics of DJ Sneak. "Cocchetti" offers a slightly more disco-centric riff on the same all-action formula, with the mystery producer making great use of some seriously soaring 1970s orchestration, while "Cornae" sounds like a cross between Tiger & Woods and the elastic, synthesizer-heavy nu-disco favoured by DJ Rocca and Sare Havlicek.

  1. Make Me (8:40)
  2. La Mia Musica (8:32)
Review: Munich's Portuguese maestro Lino Rodrigues aka Alkalino returns with the third volume of his edit series on Audaz where he's made the transition to the vinyl format finally! On the A side he takes the razor to a certain classic by The Escorts on the uplifting and summery feel good jam "Make Me Over". On the flip there's "La Mia Musica" an early '80s electronic pop ditty that sounds like a Spanish version of "Popcorn" by way of Bobby Orlando. Two respectful edits by one of the current heroes of the scene, who after DJing for 30 years is finally getting worldwide recognition.

EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: KF 012. Rel: 09 Dec 19
  1. Cabriodelic (7:00)
  2. On The Way (6:30)
  3. Tour De L'afrique (7:44)
  4. In Sands (5:34)
Review: The last we heard from Kinfolk was on the excellent "Mirage" by Kalidasa, but now the adventurous and chug-friendly label is back with this killer EP from Alterleo. "Cabriodelic" will have hips swinging at an easy tempo, not least thanks to the nagging throb of the bassline and the swaying drums shaking over the top of the track. "On The Way" takes things in a freakier direction, using ample samples and channeling a little industrial noir, while "Tour De L'afrique" focuses on craftily programmed drums and captivating melodic subtleties. "In Sands" finishes the set with a wigged out acid-trance rumination that should appeal to those who love the sound of European freak-beats before dance music got compartmentalized.

Cat: THEOM 023. Rel: 24 Apr 17
  1. Sigint (6:08)
  2. Mint (6:12)
  3. Dusky Downtown (5:26)
  4. Dusky Downtown (Amberflame Jitter Junk mix) (5:17)
Review: Last spotted burning hearts as Amberflame on Claremont 56, Theomatic boss Andrei Zakharov dusts off his AN-2 controls for three blissful, starlit downbeat instrumentals. "Sigint" slithers and writhes with salubrious, warm soapy levels of liquid funk while "Mint" is a slow-motion jog through a field at sunrise, living up to every fresh and lush connotation its title suggests. "Dusky Downtown" adds a little warped mysticism as the bassline seems to fall over the sludgy breaks and the synths melt in the spaces between. To top it all off, Andrei also throws in a chunkier, slightly more upbeat Amberflame remix, too. Safe travels.

Nomad EP (12")
Cat: THEOM 024. Rel: 18 Oct 17
  1. Nomad (8:06)
  2. Gran Turismo (4:47)
  3. Cold Front (7:06)
Review: Those who were inspired by the rise of nu-disco throughout the 2000s should already own a fair few AN-2 records or remixes. The Theomatic label founder was prolific throughout the last decade, but all but vanished from view around 2011. This is his first EP for six years, and sees him join forces with old pal Samos, whose last release landed almost a decade ago. Opener "Nomad" is probably the EP's standout track, featuring as it does a brilliant blend of chugging Italo-disco bottom end, psychedelic acid lines, dreamy chords and mind-altering Greek style instrumentation. That said, we're also big fans of rubbery, P-funk influenced electro excursion "Gran Turismo", while slow motion closer "Cold Front" is a prize chunk of trippy, dubbed-out Balearic disco.

Cat: APERSONAL 29. Rel: 18 Mar 19
  1. Don’t Cry (Trujillo edit) (5:37)
  2. Shaft (Cisco Cisco rework) (6:02)
  3. Storm (KMA edit) (6:13)
Review: The Apersonal crew offer up a selection of varied, on-point edits that reflect the wider scope of what the label is all about. Trujillo is up first, taking Robbie Ellington's "Don't Cry" to emotive new heights, before Cisco Cisco have some fun with the "Shaft" theme tune. The Portuguese duo fly in some cosmic flourishes to shape out the dancefloor prowess of this timeless crowd pleaser. KMA tackles "Storm" by Rare Silk, stretching out the illustrious instrumental flow of this dreamy Balearic roller to become a thing of beauty. With respectful approaches to the source material and enough personality in their styles to make it a worthwhile exercise, the Apersonal crew excel themselves on this release.

  1. Enough
  2. Invisible
Review: Slightly pompously, the mysterious Rock Sucks imprint has been described by its' shadowy founders as "the best lost disco and boogie label you can ever dream about". Whether that has credence remains to be seen - this is only their second release, after all - but the two edits presented here are certainly dancefloor dynamite. "Wind" - a rework of Arnie Love & The Lovetts' 1981 disco-funk smasher "Invisible Wind" - is particularly potent, making greater use of the original track's rubbery bassline and high-energy groove. Interestingly, flipside "Enough" expertly rearranges a similarly heavyweight jam from the same band (the B-side of the "Invisible Wind" single, in fact), building the tension and energy throughout.

Review: Kylie Auldist is a heavyweight Aussie soul singer whose powerful lungs have graced many a hit over the years. Now, with the help of Lance Ferguson and Graeme Pogson, she's recorded a solo album, Family Tree, and this here EP features a selection of tracks from it. Gone is the raw funk vibes of old with Auldist opting for a bright and synthetic mid-'80s pop-soul sound instead. It largely works too with the Donna Allen-esque "Sensational", the chrome and carpet grooves of "Family Tree" and the late-'70s US funk style of "Rewards" as standouts.

  1. Two Thou - "Group Technology" (with Alberto Collodel)
  2. Autre - "Cosmic Roots"
  3. Two Thou - "SOL"
  4. Autre - "Futura"
Review: The Fields & Forest label has so far aligned itself with the stellar Russian label Udacha, featuring Dices, A5 and Cuisine Dub, but things are taking a turn into new territory with the inclusion of Autre and Two Thou with two tracks a piece on this new slab of wax. Two Thou's "Group Technology" is a snappily shaped, 80s influenced groover with some interesting timbres falling into a dynamic groove, while "SOL" shows another side to the artist with a snaking slice of jazz funk infused experimental techno. Autre's "Cosmic Roots" is a more esoteric, new age gilded slice of ambient house while "Futura" ramps up the saucy synths for a silk-tongued charmer of a warm-up jam.

  1. Reachin' (feat Minnie Gardner - Hifi Sean & Yam Who? edit) (3:33)

Review: Recently, legendary American dance producer Arthur Baker discovered two tracks in his storage on 1/4" tape recorded in 1979. He asked Hifi Sean (aka Sean Dickson of The Soup Dragons) to rework them - who brought on board Riot Recordings boss Yam Who? and they quickly got to work resurrecting these soulful disco anthems. On the A side, we have the souled-up disco power of "Reachin'" featuring Minnie Gardner's powerful vocals, then get prepared to get down proper to the group vocals and epic brass section in the uplifting "Good Good Lovin'" (Hifi Sean & Yam Who? edit) all accompanied by Baker's immaculate production style.

  1. Sit On This (Bastedos edit) (7:06)
  2. No Smoking On The Moon (AM edit) (7:38)
  3. Magicke (Last Waltz Re-Do) (5:52)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!! Bastedos returns with more signature weirdo disco not disco (but disco) cut-up cuts.
This time the painstaking editing comes from A.M., Last Waltz, and Bastedos themselves.
Side A brings us Sit On This, a rolling, chugging, clapping, marimba-ing (!) disco workout in the vein of Material ,which pulls you along through a peaky peak time vocal, a sexed up guitar break, and some chopped-up chanting, all the way to its inevitable hands in the air Piano finale.
Side B first provides us first with No Smoking On The Moon and it's celestial choral stylings. Soft synths and tough bass play with each other beneath B-Movie fx and ecclesiastic organs. The sound of a space age disco cult... from the past.
Finishing off side B we have Magicke, the extended soundtrack to the opening of the gates of hell. Shuffling go-go perc, syncopated drums and fuzzed out chords play out under Satan's saxophone, before giving way to a damned (damned fuzzy that is) guitar, sounding out the call of Cthulu.

  2. Princess (Ascension) (6:50)
Review: The mysterious Bitter End return and its 'anonymous' controller is kicking off proceedings in a particular wonky mood. "Itchicrickitch" leads from the left foot with an off grid kick and bassline that gets all the wilier when the gutsy tribal cries weave into the mix for added intensity. "Princess (Ascension)" flips back to the label's more signature theme of outlandish funk as we're pumped from here to Jupiter and back on a synth driven disco piece that's laced with wry shades of highlife guitars and a rising hook that sucks you deeper and deeper into the groove. Bitter sweet.

  1. Blackbelt Andersen - "Dolphin Sandwich" (10:01)
  2. Christian Engh - "Kyllingsmak" (9:06)
Review: Prins Thomas has decided to shake-up the Full Pupp release schedule a little, launching the Full Pupp Splits series to showcase tracks from different artists on one slab of wax. For the first installment, he first turns to long-established label artist (and occasional Norwegian passport office pencil-pusher) Daniel 'Blackbelt' Andersen. His "Dolphin Sandwich" is a deliciously tasty affair, with bold but breezy synthesizer riffs, huggable grooves and yearning, sun-kissed chords. In contrast, newcomer Christian Engh offers up something darker, chunkier and more bass-heavy, drawing influence from both Dutch revivalist Italo and the analogue-rich Norwegian disco with which Lindstrom made his name.
