D'Hardest (12")
Cat: JAMWAXMAXI II. Rel: 07 Jul 17
  1. D'Hardest (7:38)
  2. D'Hardest (version) (7:36)
Review: Trinidadian eccentric Shadow has seen interest in his 1980s work rocket in recent times. Jamwax continue their love affair with the artist via this essential reissue of his obscure 1980 single "D'Hardest". Like much of his work, the track offers up a take on soca for the synthesizer age, with dusty electronic melodies and drum machine hits working in perfect harmony with his confident vocal and jangling acoustic guitar flourishes. On the flip you'll find the dub style Version, which strips out much of the vocal and using the chorus as a mantra-like chant.

Your Pants Are Hot (limited 7")
Cat: FAIP 002. Rel: 29 Jan 18
  1. Your Pants Are Hot (4:42)
  2. Mandingo Boogie (4:27)
Review: Last summer, Evo and Soulstice launched Adventures in Paradise with a fine 7" of tooled-up funk reworks by J Sole and J Boogie. Here, the label returns to action with two more guaranteed party-starters. Fittingly, Evo makes his first appearance on the label with B-side "Mandingo Boogie", a killer edit of a low-slung disco-boogie heater rich in rubbery bass guitar, twinkling electric piano parts, spiraling electronic effects and punchy horns. While impressive, we can imagine DJs getting far more rotations from DJ Smash's cheeky A-side, "Your Pants Are Hot", which peppers a snappy, synth bass-propelled groove with samples from a well-known Godfather of Soul favourite.

  1. Shake Your Body Down (To The Ground) (full vocal club mix) (5:48)
  2. Shake Your Body Down (To The Ground) (Dubbed Out voxapella mix) (5:33)
Review: We're not quite sure who's behind the Redux Inc series - naturally, they're keeping their heads down - but we can confirm that this debut 12" is rather tasty. As the title makes clear, both cuts are dancefloor-minded reworks of one of the most celebrated, disco-era Jacksons tunes. The A-side "Full Vocal Club Mix" is effectively a tasty dancefloor extension/re-edit with a few subtle new touches and a lightly tightened beat that should make mixing a whole lot easier. The flipside "Dubbed Out Voxapella Mix" is slightly more revolutionary, with the Redux Inc. crew bringing the beat in and out while the acapella and key musical ingredients (the song's familiar piano refrain and horn lines, specifically) take centre stage.

  1. DMX Krew - "Astro Logical"
  2. Sandrow M - "Prayervan" (live version)
  3. Jacob Korn - "Eieiei"
  4. Drvg Culture - "See You Again Someday"
Review: While the title evokes images of the Uncanny Valley crew getting up to sitcom-style scrapes while bumbling around Germany in a rickety old bus, there's an altogether simpler explanation for the Uncanny Vacation tag. Basically, it's a hook-up between the Dresden label and their pals from Munich's Permanent Vacation imprint, featuring tracks from both camps. Musically, there are plenty of thrills on offer, from the looped deep house-disco of Jacob Korn's "Eieiei" and bodypoppin' electro-meets-classic Italo of DMX Krew's "Astro Logical", to the woozy, almost Balearic analogue deep house of Drvg Culture's winding "See You Again Someday". It's as off-kilter but on-point as you'd expect. We'd still think the bus trip idea is a goer, mind.

  2. Shantell Sisters & Keva Band - "Ouch" (dub) (6:48)
  3. The Joneses - "Sugar Pie Guy" (Tee Scott club dub) (6:13)
Review: The Edit & Dub Recordings label out of Tokyo is seriously impressing us as of late, with this new remix EP being the best of their material to date. That's because they have the house master, Chicago dance wizard, Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers remixing Original Love's "Love Vista" into a gorgeous house track with a sublime dub sensibility that suits it down to the bone - this is tune of the week for us and we cannot recommend it enough. However, the dub version of "Ouch" by the Shantell Sisters & Keva Band, which is actually more of a disco banger, is no less masterful in its execution and italo-leaning tendencies. Finally, Tee Scott delivers a dub of "Sugar Pie Guy" by The Joneses, a percussion-heavy boogie monster with a buzzing bassline ready to conquer the floor good and proper.

Review: Get your motors running! Hamburg DJ and occasional editor Automart drives off the forecourt with one of his first originals. With its stately tempo and soft harmonics creating a smooth discoid ride, "Discover Me" sets to cruise control in a subtly addictive unhurried speed. Loaded with both vocal and instrumental versions from Tom Noble, there's plenty of mileage in the tank on this one.

  1. World Gruuv (7:14)
  2. Profesora (9:15)
Review: Having previously blessed us with "Ocean Side" two years back, Benedek and Tom Noble return to Superior Elevation with two more Balearic gems. One for the night time, one for sunrise; "World Gruuv" hits the boogie spot with spiralling keys wandering freely up and down a tight shimmering synth-bass led groove. Meanwhile "Profesora" on the B brings us back into reality softly with its addictive percussive hook, aquatic backing and totally tropical taste. Imagine Art Of Noise on Claremont 56 and you're on the right route.

  1. Arto Mwambe - "Noh Ngamebeo"

  3. Arto Mwambe - "BTWO"
Review: Having released a wonderful retrospective of the defunct Frankfurt label Brontosaurus across multiple formats last month, Permanent Vacation sneak out a little 12" shaped treat in the shape of this plate featuring tracks not featured on the Double LP edition. For the uninitiated, Brontosaurus was founded in 2006 by Thomas Sabrowsky, Phillip Lauer and Arto Mwambe's Christian BeiBwenger and is fondly remembered as the precursor to current Frankfurt institution Live At Robert Johnson. These addendum 12" features two sought after vinyl must haves from Arto Mwambe in "Noh Ngamebo" and "BTWO" plus the slow disco chugger and Prins Thomas favourite "Ray Rider" by The Exile Missile.

Review: John Morales - one half of the beyond-legendary production team M+M - finally delivers the new Club Motown series that began in 2014. The last 12" focused on divas but here we're celebrating two of the funkiest names in funk soul; Rick James and The Temptations. From the epic 11 minute reprise of "Standing On The Top" to the equally extensive shake up of "Brick House" via the brand new arrangement of "Big Time", it's another collection that only Morales could concoct. The stomping percussion-heavy into on the vocal dub of "Big Time" is impossible to sniff at too...

  3. Last Summer (vocal version) (6:51)
  4. Last Summer (instrumental version) (4:28)
  5. Last Summer (Go Go version) (4:04)
Review: Unlike some of Dark Entries' Italo-disco reissues, Wish Key's "Orient Express" is fairly easy to come across on the second hand market. It is, though, no less alluring for that, and is most certainly worthy of the deluxe repress treatment. The Instrumental version, in particular - all relentless train noises, delay-laden drum machine solos and sparkling synthesizers - is absolutely killer. Wisely, Dark Entries has chosen to back it with three versions of Wish Key's 1986 single "Last Summer", an almost Balearic chunk of mid-tempo Italo-disco/synth-pop fusion. That, too, boasts a brilliant instrumental version - this time with a pleasingly glassy-eyed ambient build- up and a surprising Go Go Mix.

  3. Zanzibar (original version) (5:56)
  4. Zanzibar (Afro mix) (5:46)
Review: Dark Entries' series of leftfield Italo-disco reissues continues with a double-header from prolific Italo disco session vocalist Helen (AKA Elena Ferretti), whose early excursions on obscure Italian labels Out Records and Discomagic have previously been the sole preserve of dusty-fingered crate-diggers. This EP brings together two of her finest EPs; 1983's scarce "Witch" - an exercise in bubbling, synth-pop inclined Italo-disco - and 1985's arguably better-known "Zanzibar". It's arguably the sparse, cowbell-laden "Afro Mix" - think Cosmic Club era Daniele Baldelli - of this track that steals the show, though all four tracks are shot through with that European strangeness that often marks out the best early Italo cuts.

  2. Don't Say That (Mr Bird rework) (5:39)
  3. Don't Say That (Mr Bird rework - DJ Tool) (4:21)
Review: A brief glance at a high-profile second-hand vinyl website confirms that original copies of Henry Wenceslas Thenard's obscure 1985 zouk cut "Ne Dis Pas Cela" (or, as we say in English, "Don't Say That") are not only incredibly hard to come by, but also change hands for extortionate amounts. This reissue, then, is rather handy for those without super-sized record-buying budgets. Thenard's jaunty, horn-heavy and sun-kissed original version resides on the A-side, with Mr Bird providing fresh reworks on the flip. On his "Rework", the French scene veteran gives the cut a disco-zouk feel, placing choice elements of Thenard's original mix (mainly the horns and vocals) above a chunky new beat. That beat naturally comes to the fore on his admirably percussive DJ Tool.

Review: Last spotted on wax together 16 years ago on New Standards, Italian kindred spirits and diggers Conte and Petrella collide once again. A culmination of many records savoured and ideas shared between the two friends, this 12" is long overdue and fizzes with fusion. "African Spirit" is focused on a rolling tribal MAW style house rhythm with Gianluca adding his signature trombone with staccato finesse while "New World Shuffle" is a much dreamier, smoky affair that sounds perfect any time between sunset and sunrise. Spiritual.

Review: Previously known as Rach B, Roxy strides forth with two juicy, sultry slices that feel as if they come straight from the 80s. Powered by Roller8 and Throwbakk, the grooves are silky, warm and stately as Roxy purrs with precision; "Body Heat" is a hip-flaring electro boogie floor-burner while "Midnight Lover" takes more of a late night route with its slower pace and evocative lyrics. Loaded with two versions, Rollersoul haven't left anything to chance. Feel the heat.

Review: Freeezy does it. John Rocca's more synth-based side project Pink Rhythm continues its reissue revival with this highly sought-after 12" that's not been reissued since 1985. Peak yacht funk with all the lavish production flourishes of the era, and strong traces of jazz, each cut stimulates: "Melodies Of Love" is all about the falsettos and Balearic charm while "Walking In The Rain" is a sultry sax-blaster with some of the most powerful bass walks Beggars Banquet ever pressed. 4. Nation Time (4:35)
Review: In the early 1970s, a new musical art form emerged on the streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago from the social unrest of the time. A group of young guys started to combine poetry with drumming and created the musical art form that is known today as Rapso. Lutalo 'Brother Resistance' Masimba was one of the pioneers of this movement and his 1987 anthem "Tonight Is de Night" receives a much-needed reissue here on Cree. There's much to enjoy on this 12" - we're particularly loving the groovy "Rapso Space Dub" and funky steel drum riddims of "Crucial Decision ('92 Version)". This is total spiritual life music.

Review: Hot on the heels of last year's Athens Of The North excavation comes this seminal slice of proto boogie from Aaron Broomfield as he was just on the brink of leaving Broomfield Corporate Jam to set himself up solo. Never before released (only two test presses were made, and one of them was damaged in a fire), both the slower, more seductive demo and the sprightly, slap bass popping final version capture a pivotal moment in Broomfield's career and a golden time in post disco funk and boogie. Just as the title suggests; you'll keep coming back to this one over and over again.

  1. Going Back To My Roots (9:44)
  2. Going Back To My Roots (Danny Krivit Chant edit) (5:37)
Review: While the later Richie Havens and Odyssey covers were far more commercially successful, you can't beat Lamont Dozier's original 1977 version of "Going Back To My Roots" - a near ten-minute workout that starts as a disco-soul stomper, ends as a chant-along Afro-funk stepper, and was arranged by none other than South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela. Dozier's impeccable take takes pride of place on side A of this Groovin' Records reissue, with a fresh re-edit by Danny Krivit - who previously tweaked the Richie Havens version - on the flip. Brilliantly, Krivit ignores much of the song, instead extending and rearranging the sweaty, tropical end section of Dozier's original mix into an inspired track of its own.

Review: Amidst recent praise from a variety of individuals including Ben UFO, Legowelt and the Juno review team, the Peoples Potential Unlimited label keep up the brilliant work with yet another killer disco boogie oddity from the early 80s. This Westwood / Cash twelve is the first of two twelve's from the Washington imprint to switch the focus to the career of Detroit producer Danaan Potts who can count on studying alongside a young Juan Atkins as well as spending close to 100 hours a week studio time alongside George Clinton as influences. Here he adopts the anonymous Westwood tag to add some bizarre P Funk to the delightful Orlando Cash jams "Psycho For Your Love" and "Work Those Joints". Additional PPU tweaks of both make this one of the labels best twelve's to date!

Review: More Beatdown business from vinyl-only warriors Smokecloud. Osmose steps forward with the first half; "Help Me DISCOver" is a sample-savvy filtered enlightener while his edit of the Silver Rider goes for a much heavier, floor-pounding sense of insistency. Flip for twists from JP Source and Hristo. The former gets busy on a densely textured and tightly plucked guitar line while the latter takes us right down into sleazy town with an Isaac Hayes level of gravelly vocals and a sweaty guitar and organ pumped groove.

Review: Although little known in the UK, Sicilian singer Mario Biondi has sold huge amounts of records in his native Italy. It's not surprising, really, given the quality of his Barry White-esque deep and soulful vocal style. Here he pops up on Schema, offering up the seductive, slow dance-friendly silkiness of "Never Stop Dreaming" and the warm and groovy Philly Soul revivalism "Stay With Me". That track is given the once over by fellow Italian LTJ Xperience. Interestingly, his full vocal remix is faster, warmer and looser than his normal metronomic productions, while retaining his usual DJ-friendly grooves. His soulful house style instrumental Dub is pretty darn tasty, too.

This time it's German new wave band Boytronic who see a reissue, and the EP in question is 1988's "Byllyant", which features the magnificent Plus 8 mix - a shot to the head made up of warm bass tones and hard-hitting drum machine patterns - and also the US mix, which literally sounds like it was made yesterday; for being an '80s EP, Boytronic steered well clear of cheesy and to be honest, they give New Order a proper run for their money. The 1984 mix of "Trigger Track" is a wonderful electro stormer, stamping its fast beats over eerie pads and growling basslines. This would be silly not to recommend! For the diggers.
