Spring Yard Zone (limited 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: CC 95. Rel: 01 Feb 16
  1. Spring Yard Zone (4:07)
  2. Beautiful Forest (4:19)
  3. Neon Night Riders (2:48)
  4. Port Town (3:16)
Review: Aside from reissuing a whole heap of glorious boogie material from the 1980'sm People's Potential Unlimited also have their own distribution roster, and Cosmic Chronic is right up there waving the flag for the US stable. To kick-start 2016, we have a four-tracker from newcomer Arcade Odyssey, and as you'd expect, they're every but as funky and lo-fi as those instrumentals from back in the day. "Spring Yard Zone" kicks off with massive electro baseline, tropical melodies, and a hazy vibe, while "Beautiful Forest" breaks the beat down and goes Eastern with its synths. Flip the plate and you'll be confronted by the huge, stabbing bassline and fast beats of the utterly gnarly "Neon Night Riders" - easily the gem of the lot - and wound down thanks to the gentler, more tame waters of "Port Town". Sick.

  3. Stay Free (Dimitri From Paris dubstrumental) (6:11)
  4. Stay Free (Dimitri From Paris The Symphonic mix) (6:44)
Review: Via the Le Edits series, Dimitri From Paris continues to dish up essential edits and remixes of classic disco cuts. Here he gets to work on Ashford and Simpson's 1979 cut "Stay Free", delivering four different revisions. He begins with the self-explanatory "The Missing Remix DJ Friendly Edition", which features mix-friendly drums in key locations, before dishing up a similar sounding, vocal-free Instrumental version. Over on Side B, the superb "Symphonic Mix" sees the Parisian focus on the duo's awesome vocals and luscious orchestration while the "Dubstramental" is a brilliantly stripped-back, bass-heavy affair that peppers the killer groove with delay-laden strings and horns.

  3. Teddy Pendergrass - "I Don't Love You Anymore" (A Tom Moulton mix) (8:46)
  4. Lou Rawls - "See You When I Git There" (A Tom Moulton mix) (9:39)
Review: During the latter stages of the "Philly Soul" era, New York remixer Tom Moulton delivered a string of inspired, DJ friendly reworks for the Philadelphia International label. For proof, check this fine selection of classic Moulton mixes for the storied imprint. Check first his version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over", which he brilliantly teases out and increases in intensity over nine spellbinding minutes. The funkier flex of People's Choice's "Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)" is a sweaty, low-down treat, while the Teddy Pendergrass rework is a soaring disco classic in the Philly Soul style. Best of all, though, is the string-drenched disco celebration that is his mix of Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There".

Review: Analogue synthesizer enthusiast Bezier first surfaced on Dark Entries in 2012, delivering the hard-wired retro-futurist fantasy Ensconced. Two years on, he's finally ready to release the follow-up, the similarly sharp and sci-fi themed Telemores. As with his previous output, the influences are obvious - think Radiophonic Workshop, electro, minimal, new wave and Italo-disco - but he smartly steers clear of pastiche and empty revivalism. Instead, we're treated to a range of dancefloor-friendly instrumental cuts, cyborg jams, and intoxicating robot rinse-outs. Closer "Fukushima", in which he doffs a cap to the synthesized horror-disco of John Carpenter, is particularly potent.

  3. Shadows From Nowhere (Danilo Braca ReVision) (9:03)
Review: Celso Valli's one-off project Blue Gas produced an all-time Balearic killer in "Shadows From Nowhere". It's so smooth, Best Records have decided to return to it after their 2016 reissue with a fresh proposition for the diggers who can't get enough of this timeless gem. This time around, New York-based producer Danilo Braca has been given free reign to deliver his own interpretation on the B side, coming up with a nine-minute dream that accentuates the rhythm section and nudges up the tempo just a touch to make it supremely funky, but without losing that all important dreamy atmosphere.

  1. Shadows From Nowhere (5:29)
  2. Marie (4:48)
  3. Shadows From Nowhere (Danilo Braca ReVision) (9:04)
Review: In the previous reissues we talked so much about this fantastic piece and "Marie", a very cinematic and supportive song, that now it is appropriate to dwell on the re-visited version of Danilo Braca that extends beautifully on the AA side of this new remastered reprint. Danilo who lives in the big apple often frequents Ibiza, perhaps also for this he has been able to exalt the most rhythmic elements of "Shadows from Nowhere", putting the beautiful falsetto beats to excessive movements, just like the waves that wash themselves on the sandy beaches of the White Island. His teacher Mario Gentili from Layer Bows added a beautiful arrangement for the strings and his Italian-New York collaborator Alvise Marino spread some fragments of guitar powder on top. That's it. 9 minutes of pure bliss, but also of catchy rhythm!

Lady Bug (12" with obi-strip)

  1. Lady Bug (John Morales & Frank Of Sunshine Sound mix) (9:54)
  2. Lady Bug (Larry Levan mix) (6:42)
Review: With its eccentric, helium-fuelled vocals, insatiable bassline, bold pianos and swirling strings, Bumblebee Unlimited's "Lady Bug" remains one of Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael's greatest productions. This special reissue ignores the duo's original 1978 mixes, instead showcasing the '79 reworks released on RCA. On the A-side you'll find John Morales and Frank "Sunshine Sound" Trimarco's peerless, 10-minute "Disco Mix"- a rework that successfully showcases each individual musical element contained within Adams and Carmichael's similarly epic original production. On the flip, you'll find the lesser-celebrated but equally memorable Larry Levan remix, in which the legendary Paradise Garage resident wisely put more emphasis on the heavyweight bassline and relentless disco drums.

  1. Hit Or Miss (4:10)
  2. Friends (4:19)
Review: Here is the long awaited new single from Italian soul supergroup Change - some of you may recognise their classic "The Glow of Love" which featured the unmistakable vocals of then frontman Luther Vandross in 1980. After six successful albums throughout the 80's before disbanding and making a brief return in 2010, the group's new single "Hit Or Miss" will appear on their first album in 38 years: Love 4 Love which is produced by Change alumni Davide Romani Mauro Malavasi, it's got the same kind of life-affirming soul power you've come to love from the outfit, and they've still got the knack for a great tune - listen for yourself!

  3. Roche - "One For Cherushii" (8:01)
  4. David Last - "All That's Left" (feat Lavender - dance mix) (5:51)
Review: Besides its inimitable name, Hobo Camp has had a pretty unbeatable first few years in the game, switching up the electro sound with shades of loopy house and techno. These guys have released over two dozen EPs since 2016, and are showing no signs of stopping if this new collaborative release is anything to by! Pumping the vibes through with utter ease, Run The Length Of Your Wilderness is a daring, rip-roaring amalgamation of tech-driven sounds that span just about every quality corner of the game. "The Industrial City", from Cherushii, moans and weeps with a fragile acid bassline over broken percussion beats, while Nackt's "Next" floats at a house tempo, driven forwards by a winding bass from the darkest corners of the 4/4 game. On the flip, Roche's "One For Cherushii" bigs up his counterpart with a deep, aqueous house chugger, and David Last's "All That's Left" drops a clean, sparkly prog house groover for the lovers.

Review: City O' were an Italo-disco six-piece led by renowned Italian singer and producer Gino Caria, and 'Rose Of Tokyo', originally released on Discomagic in 1984, was their one and only single. The original - all LinnDrum beats, plinky-plonked synths and gravel-voiced spoken male vocal, counterpointed by sweet female harmonies - and its accompanying Dub were reissued by Germany's XYZ Music in 2010, and now it's back, bolstered by two fresh remixes from Flamming Datum and Also Playable Mono, both of whom stay pretty true to the original but smooth off some of the rougher 80s edges - either making it more playable or detracting from its raw charm, according to taste!

Review: Originally written by Leroy Burgess and James Calloway for Patrick Adams' Phreek, iconic NYC disco boogie gem "The Weekend" enjoyed a Class Action re-up in 1983 with two bonafide mixing titans at the controls; M&M and Larry Levan. The former was all about the big synth gloss and a really broad groove while Levan gave it a serious DJ twist with a two minute intro that really broken down each element. Party time.

Review: One of many stone-cold Patrick Adams disco funk gems, 1981's "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By" enjoys a long-awaited reissue 37 years after its last outing. Its sprightly slippery groove and floating falsettos remain as strong and as a vital as they ever did... But at a fraction of the once triple-figure price tag it's had over the years. Don't let this record pass you by.

Review: Another one of the many aliases and side-projects from pioneering group Fockewulf 190, Dario Dell'Aere's "Eagles In The Night" is a truly iconic Italo disco record. Coated with gutsy vocals from Fred Ventura, it's kitsch without being too theatrical and rolls with such a hook and detailed melody that you'll be hooked beyond the big, stadium-filling yearns. Naturally the instrumental is also included for those who find the croons a touch too much. Limited to 200 copies, this requires some pretty fast action.

  1. Go Bang! #5 (Francois K mix) (7:37)
  2. Go Bang ! (Walter Gibbons unreleased mix) (12:27)
Review: Arthur Russell in his early 80s post-rock, far-out outfit Dinosaur L, "Go Bang #5" featured on the band's one and only album 24-24. According to legend Francois was asked to create a dancefloor version as the album version was a little too far-out for the floor. Naturally he delivered while paying total respect to frenetic, leftside thinking of the original with elements, textures and instrumental devices flying in from all sides. Another outright disco legend appears on the B: Walter Gibbons applies a leaner twist that gradually builds into bad trip wooziness before letting loose with an epic percussive section. 35 years deep and this still bangs.

Review: Cosmic Records Store is a brand new label with just a touch of mystery around the team behind them. If this launch release is anything to go by, there's a touch of class, knowledge and connections too. Celebrating the phenomenon that is the Muse Of Transition, Susana's allure is compounded by her political sexuality in the wake of Franco's demise. Sultry, silky and playful throughout, CRS have enlisted three key Spanish editors to join the party as Mr Absolutt, James Rod and Javi Frias all add groove extending, dubbed out magic to the originals. We can't wait to hear what Cosmic Record Store have up their sleeves next...

  4. Hormone (Tom Bolas Extension) (4:32)
Review: We're not sure whether Daniele Baldelli championed Fireplays' "Allein" when it first dropped on 7" way back in 1982, but it's the sort of cosmic disco/cosmic rock fusion cut that fits his original Cosmic Club template. This reissue marks the track's first ever appearance on 12", with the bubbly original - all walking disco bass, fuzzy rock riffs, guttural German vocals and spiraling synthesizers - being joined by an extended "Singlemann Replay" from Tiney that's effectively the 12" extended version the original release never had. Also worth a listen is original B-side "Hormone", a muscular, tongue-in-cheek fusion of camp disco elements and Moroder style arpeggio bass. This too is given a cheery edit style extension, this time by Tom Bolas.

Review: The Foster Jackson Group are one of those forgotten but highly coveted one-hit disco wonders that exist in the bottomless pit that is often classed simply as 'soul'. All that aside, these people made an incredible 12" back in 1979 that has been going for serious bucks on the second-hand market, but thankfully the prodigious P&P Records have saved the day yet again. "Feel The Spirit" is a devilish, inimitable disco jingle that is split between the more percussion ridden "Long Disco Version", and a more contained, more floor-focussed "Disco Version" They both contain that instantly addictive dose of piano, though. Check it out, you'll know what we mean...
