Sanctify
Cat: LTR 001. Rel: 18 Dec 20
Sanctify (4:03)
Sanctify (T Groove Smooth mix) (4:14)
Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

The Ananda Project - "Cascades Of Colour" (DJ Kawasaki Slow Disco mix) (4:13)
Blaze - "We Are One" (DJ Kawasaki Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix) (4:15)
Review: DJ Kawasaki fires up his tools and gets to work on a couple of tasty new edits here. The first is a slow disco mix of The Ananda Project's 'Cascades Of Colour' which is lush, low riding and built on loopy drums with silky synths that are finished with some sprinkles of cosmic melody up top. Sublime. Blaze's 'We Are One' then gets a special Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix which has more astral synth work ringing out from a tight and funk arrangement with lush bass lines and nice organic drums.

A Good Time (3:28)
You're Gonna Love Me (3:44)
Review: The Super Disco Edits stable returns to action with a new set of edits, two disco-leaning versions of B & The Family's disco classics. The first is the instantly recognisable "A Good Time", a disco bomb like no other and exactly the sort of tune that makes people think of the word 'party'. On the flip, "You're Gonna Love Me" is more of a boogie monster reinterpreted and juiced up with some extra electro power in its low-end and, of course, its chunky beats and percussion to create that added dance floor effect. Tha bomb!

Count On Me (3:41)
Magic (3:35)
Review: Although operative in the early 1980s, the quality of B & The Family's boogie-era soul recordings only became evident five years ago when the Super Disco Edits label unearthed and issued a couple of their previously unreleased recordings. These two never-before-released jams come from the same period. A-side 'Count on Me' is simply superb: a squelchy and soulful electrofunk number of the kind that were frequently released in the early '80s by the Solar System and Salsoul labels. Flipside 'Magic' is a little fuzzier and hazier - in part because it was probably transferred from a partially damaged tape - but no less impressive, delivering an attractive blend of dewy-eyed male lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer sounds and dreamy chords.

Stay The Night (Mr Carmack remix) (3:55)
Review: Adam Mori aka B.Bravo is back like a thick gush of smoke filling up the dance floor, and the Brownswood-Bleep associate is in no mood to wait till the warm up set is done. These two new smokers for the Bastard Jazz imprint are pure class, every bit as sexy and seductive as we've come to expect from the producer, starting with the sultry claps and bass of the excellent "Im For Real", a sun-scorched killer of a tune, fit for riding shotgun and turing the rooftop down. On the flipside, Mr Carmack detunes "Stay The Night" down to a funky, mid-tempo level, and it's just about the grooviest of boogie tracks that we've heard in a while. Think Daft Punk meets Willie Hutch. Wonderful.

Cat: PPR 005. Rel: 16 Jan 23
B Beat Classic (5:47)
B Beat Classic (instrumental) (5:52)
Review: B+'s B-Beat Classic is originally from 1983. It is an early hip-hop and electronic fusion with some great talk-box vocals and a loose-limbed mix of percussion and drums. It moves slowly and purposefully, with scratches over the top and unhinged funk soon permeating your body. Leftover tape was used to create the effects and original copies have a note that the tune was dedicated to a first generation Boston disco DJ named Jim Stuard whose career was cut short by the Everard Baths fire in New York City in 1977.

Review: The lesser spotted Leggins returns with another pair of edit gems. Afro-focussed "Expensive Sheeeeet" comes with more switches than a cockpit as we flick between lolloping bass groove, deep tenor soul, rifle percussion and serious sprinkles of sunset magic. "Lando Disco" ventures west towards Brazil with rich orchestration, wondrous sweeping strings and a perfectly lamenting vocal. Sonic honey.

Shuffleupagus (3:39)
Review: Mystery surrounds the story behind this edit-style two-tracker - and, indeed, the identity of Baggy Leggins and Duke Hobo themselves - but there's much to admire about it. Check first A-side 'Keep Marching', where a lightly beefed up and housed-up semi-acoustic groove offers a platform for sweet, bilingual female lead vocals, jaunty guitars and simmering strings. It's a genuine dancefloor revision, but one that will suit Balearic DJs and confirmed party starters as much as dusty-fingered crate diggers and selector sorts. 'Shuffleupagus', meanwhile, sees the mystery artist cut up and tool up a vaguely familiar Latin workout with predictably energetic and party-starting results.

Good Good Lovin' (Hifi Sean & Yam Who? edit) (3:58)
Review: Recently, legendary American dance producer Arthur Baker discovered two tracks in his storage on 1/4" tape recorded in 1979. He asked Hifi Sean (aka Sean Dickson of The Soup Dragons) to rework them - who brought on board Riot Recordings boss Yam Who? and they quickly got to work resurrecting these soulful disco anthems. On the A side, we have the souled-up disco power of "Reachin'" featuring Minnie Gardner's powerful vocals, then get prepared to get down proper to the group vocals and epic brass section in the uplifting "Good Good Lovin'" (Hifi Sean & Yam Who? edit) all accompanied by Baker's immaculate production style.

We'll Be Together (3:27)
I Need You (2:58)
Review: Four years ago, Super Disco Edits unearthed a stash of previously unreleased solo recordings by sometime Revelation member (and session vocalist on countless classic disco and boogie hits) Phillip Ballou. Having released just two of those songs - the brilliant 'Ain't Nothing Like The Love' and 'Nothing For Real'- back in 2017, they've finally decided to offer-up two more. A-side 'We'll Be Together' is particularly impressive, with Ballou adding his silky, effortlessly soulful vocals to a sparkling backing track that adds spacey synthesizer sounds and cosy female backing vocals to a Philly Soul inspired groove. Over on the flip, 'I Need You' is a sugary but heartfelt ballad in which Ballou is accompanied by little more than an electric piano and a few sustained synthesizer chords. It's a spine-tingling combination.

Ain't No Stopping Us Now (3:03)
Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Living Disco Club (Tonico70 Reloved) (4:24)
Review: Banda Male was a collective that formed in a home studio in Salerno, one of the historic districts in the South Italy. It was the initiative of composer and keys man Peppe Maiellano and rapper, DJ and producer Tonico Settanta. The rest of the cast is ever rotating and the music they make is a lively mix of disco, funk and soul with signature Italo melodies. This new single is taken from their June 2021 album UFO Bar and is a low slung number with a steamy vocal and a somewhat sleazy bassline. 'Living Disco Club' (Tonico 70 Reloved) then slows it down further with even more twirling melodies.

Review: The amount of ultra-rare, hard to find, essential Northern Soul classics seems to be infinite. Here comes another reissue that aims to right that wrong with an officially licensed pair of tunes from the Phase One Network that has artwork based on the original promo version. 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' is brimming with soul and immediately swells your heart with its elegant strings, graceful piano chords and swirling sense of groove all lifting you off your feet. Cycles Of You (4:27)
Review: This 2024 edition marks the return of Joe Bataan, via the same track that made his name in 2004. Vampi Soul first welcomed the Latin Soul king to the label two decades back, facilitating the release of his 2005 album Call My Name. The pre-release singles for the album were 'Chick-A-Boom' and 'Cycles Of You', packed onto a single 7"; these quickly became DJs' favourites and have thus since remained long out of print. As it was twenty years ago, 'Chick-A-Boom' is a simultaneously upbeat but ghostly track, with Bataan's vocals quadrupling up in a wall of sound while providing the vibe equivalent of a Jackie Chan flick. 'Call My Name', meanwhile, goes heavy on the clavichord and synth whistle, as Bataan revels in a funereal theme, dancing, thundersticking into the great beyond.

Review: Vampisoul mainstay Joe Bataan comes through once again this year for a two-track G-funk-whistling pair of soul bits, reissuing the song 'Call My Name', which cemented the crooner's name way back in 2004. A funereal theme overarches the otherwise laid-back and casually-mooded song: "we are gathered here today to remember the departed and have a final say". It's this tension between joyous and lamentatory that nails the Latin Soul artist's overall vision and here you have the potential to whack it on the 'tables once more.

Car Chase
Review: Fresh Up specialise in strictly limited edition 45rpm singles showcasing the finest in new, old-sounding library funk, Moog disco and vocoder boogie sounds. BBII are a mysterious all-star session group gathered from the four corners of London to compose and record funky disco and soundtrack gems. "Red Giant" is a chugging electronic 80s Italo number with synth pop drums and overlayed multiple synths. On the flip "Car Chase" sees more of the BBII musicians backing up squelchy keyboards and disco handclaps in what could almost be a 1970s cop show funk jam! Additional lashings of rhodes, clavinet and Moog instrumentation (and even a police car siren) make this a most intriguing little relase.

Beastie Boys vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:11)
Review: On his last two singles on Soopastole, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul smashed together elements of Stevie Wonder and Redman/Method Man, and James Brown and Crooklyn Dodgers. For his latest trick he's decided to pepper an edited version of "People All Over The World" by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB, with raps from a stone cold classic Beastie Boys tune. It's the sort of thing that shouldn't work, but the Beasties' flows work perfectly over the flanged guitars, undulating bass and unfussy 4-to-the-floor Philly Soul grooves of the MFSB track. You can hear his instrumental rework of that track on the flip; it's so good that it's arguably worth the entrance price on its own.

Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

Crazy In Kingston (7 Inch rework) (4:04)
Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

'The Drag Stop' pairs some aching soft-rock vocals with tumbling congas and chunky disco drums that march on wards and upwards as the synths bring some cosmic drama. I Can FIXX A Hole (4:44)
Review: Long-serving scalpel fiend Beatconductor is in old-school mash-up mode on this tidy seven-inch single, which serves as the third release on his freshly minted GATT imprint. On 'Human Emotions' he cannily combines two classic cuts: the instrumental of Human League synth-pop classic 'Don't You Want Me' and the full female acapella from a loved-up, glassy-eyed soul/R&B gem that should be familiar to most. He does something for more revolutionary on the surprisingly brilliant 'I Can FIXX A Hole', where the acapella from a Pepper-time era Fab Four favourite rises above a tweaked, slightly dubbed-out version of a vintage, Rhodes-sporting Hall & Oates groove. It shouldn't work, but it genuinely does!

Review: In soul connoisseur circles, Ethel Beatty will forever be remembered for her sole single on Roy Ayers' Uno Melodic label, which first slipped out in 1981. This Expansion Records reissue - pressed on white vinyl in a Juno exclusive - proves why it is still so well thought of. A-side "I Know You Care" is super-sweet, with Roy Ayers' immaculate production wisely focusing on Beatty's lovelorn vocal, and a disco era deep soul groove that's effortlessly warm and tactile. She was more than happy for him to reissue the record, which is one of the most inspired and well-made disco-soul records you're ever likely to hear (how it remained a lost classic, we'll never know). Both tracks originally appeared on Strata Sphere Records seven-inch way back in 1985, with original copies now changing hands for hundreds of pounds online. The A-side, "Hold That Groove", is indicative of the six-piece band's output, layering deep, spacey synths, slap bass and Bennett's vocal (urging his band mates not to loose the groove) atop a stepping, go-go style rhythm. Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Review: Bill F Whitten is undoubtedly best known as the fashion designer behind some of the most arresting outfits worn by Michael Jackson, the Jacksons and Stevie Wonder. During the mid-to-late '70s, he was also briefly the leading member of an eight-piece Atlantic disco outfit called Between The Two. While the band performed live around the U.S in 1977, they never released any music, despite making studio recordings of some of their songs. Here, two of those "lost songs" make it to vinyl to the first time. Review: Beyonce's seventh studio album, Renaissance, was one of her biggest to date back in 2022. It turned out plenty of big hits which got heard on dance floors all over the world and now one of them makes it to this cheeky 7". 'Cuff' was written and produced by Beyonce with additional help from Raphael Saadiq and The-Dream, amongst others, including Chic's Nile Rodgers. And you can hear that in the low-slung disco grovels and funky basslines that are the bedrock for Bey to do her vocal thing. 'Work It Out' comes on the flip for a more slow and percolating funk workout.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped, otherwise in excellent condition***

Beyonce's seventh studio album, Renaissance, was one of her biggest to date back in 2022. It turned out plenty of big hits which got heard on dance floors all over the world and now one of them makes it to this cheeky 7". Review: Vancouver-based DJ and producer Nick Bike here recasts lyrics by East Oakland rapper Too Short's 'Blow The Whistle' in his own fine and inimitable style. The original - a hyphy track aimed right at the floor, with bubbling synth bass - came in 2006 and was produced by Lil-Jon and here is returned to its 70s funk roots. Donna Summer's 1979 chart-topping hit 'Bad Girls' gets sampled and dropped int this new version with extra whistles, chanted mantras plenty of sure fire, disco-ready energy. It's a reinvigorated hip hop anthem destined for hardcore spin backs once the clubs reopen.

Let's Go (4:26)
Review: DJ Fryer's Athens of the North imprint has provided soul and disco DJs with some killer 7" reissues since launching earlier this year. Here, he uncovers another obscure but oh-so-good gem. There's little information available about Bileo, aside from the fact that they released just two singles between 1979 and '83. "You Can Win" was there debut. It's a deliciously loose and celebratory chunk of disco-soul featuring spellbinding horns and a cheery, wholeheartedly positive vocal. It's the sort of disco-soul gem that makes us want to hug complete strangers before running into the sea fully clothed. The more low-slung disco-funk flipside, "Let's Go", is almost as good. Recommended.

Lexx - "All That Is Now" (4:16)
Review: Linen fresh Balearica from Swiss soul man Lexx. First up is a slight re-pointing of Bing Ji Ling's "Hanging On A String". Still fresh from his Paqua adventures, the crisp guitars and Doobie Brothers harmonies are maintained as Lexx adds more pluck to the low end. "All That Is Now" lowers the tempo a little, easing us into a steamy deep bath of fragrant pads of delicately over-layered arpeggios and more shimmering guitars. A perfectly timed summer record.

Review: Brian Ellis and Tim Tucker's Birdbone project breathes its first ever breaths with two almighty wallops of synth-slapping boogie funk. "Heart Attack" tickles hard with pre-game mischief and some of the finest keytar solo wriggles you'll hear outside of Chromeo's studio. "Don't Stop" takes us just a touch closer to disco with Prelude-style refrains and a drop so dreamy you'll may need to pack a fresh pair of long-johns. Let's hope Birdbone is a permanent fixture in both artist's lives.

All the way from 1976 comes 'Que Se Faz Da Vida', a strutting, suave, emotionally cool EP of only the most DJ-able and collected soul-funk. This reissue is, bizarrely, Bizarro's first ever.

Black Devil Disco Club presents Bernard Fevre - "Max Stroke"
Yellow Peril Disco Group - "Bamboo Disco"
Review: Ed DMX's Fresh Up imprint enlist seminal French disco act Black Devil Disco Club and Yellow Peril Disco Group for this double drop of delightful weirdo disco - think a love of vintage synths, curious Italian synth-soundtracks, Radiophonic Workshop noises and tongue-in-cheek disco-campery. A-Side "Max Stroke" sounds like the theme tune to some long-lost 1970s sci-fi series - British and low budget, of course - whilst "Bamboo Disco" is an effortlessly cheeky fusion of Tomorrow's World synths, quirky Far East-inspired melodies and vocoder shout-outs. It's very silly, but also rather endearing.

Review: Sexy robots are criminally overlooked when it comes to disco lyrics, but Spanish disco funk act are making up for this with this gossamer-smooth jam. Driven by lush synths and bolstered by captivating slap bass, this ode to automaton rumpy pumpy sparkles in every possible direction. Meanwhile on the B "Hypnosis" bumps and shuffles with authentic synth boogie flavour. Think Silver City produced by Zapp & Roger.

This Special Edits series does exactly what says on the tin and the seventh installment is another one that takes you to a steamy Brooklyn dance floor sometime in the past. Fusion jazz and soulful disco styles define each of these tunes, neither of which are very well known, but both of which will bang, particularly the funky bass and icy hi-hats of 'Get Down' that are combined perfectly with Philly style strings and golden chords.

Sha La La (Means I Love You) (4:48)
Review: Black Sugar were a Peruvian Latin funk band who formed in the late 1960s but unfortunately disbanded in 1975, leaving a wealth of musical trace magic behind. One such collection of vestiges now comes in the form of 'Baila', an EP comprising four tracks that were first released as singles between 1971 and 1974, and which takes its namesake from the band's greatest hit. The titular opener lays bare their blitzing blend of Latin funk via brass bellowings and organ solos, while the likes of 'Checan' and 'Too Late' deal in black-market flutes and loose-wristed percussion breaks, perfect for sunning by the shore, or wining in a winding, cobbled street somewhere in the Mediterranean.

Review: A vault of formerly unreleased Don Blackman material recently surfaced via the Chicago DJ/producer/digger Marc Davis, who in recent years struck up a relationship with the children of the mysterious New York pianist and songwriter. Now this wealth of jams finally gets released: 40 years' worth of unheard Blackman - cassettes, CDs, discs, reel-to-reels, paperwork, even VHS tapes - inevitably once more reignites the obsessive fan interest in his music, which sprang from its already-mystical cult status in the rare funk and soul-digging world.

Review: Surprisingly, Don Blackman originally wrote and recorded "Just Can't Stay Away" to play as the recorded message on his girlfriend's answering machine. He later included it - tweaked and turned into a mid-80s style boogie banger reminiscent of his work during that decade - on his second and final album, 2002's CD-only "Listen". Here it finally gets a vinyl release thanks to reissue specialists Melodies International. If you're a fan of boogie, electrofunk and synth-soul it should be an essential purchase, not least because it's every bit as good as more celebrated Blackman productions made earlier in his career. There are "Stereo" and "Mono" mixes to enjoy, with the former naturally offering a more refined and intoxicating listening experience.

Who Is Blair (Muro edit) (4:29)
Review: 'Nightlife' is arguably one of the utmost Northern soul rarities to have surfaced this year. Its maker, the guitarist and songwriter Barney 'Blair' Perry, released the eponymous single and album in 1978, at the age of 25. Comprised of six short pieces, the full album has never seen a proper reissue (for the aristo's out there with with money to spare, here's an artist to track down and an album to license!). Thankfully, in the meantime, we're kept occupied with this split single reissue from Positive Pay, who focus only on the first and third tracks, 'Nightlife' and 'Who Is Blair'. These are good choices: the former is a vibraslapping, synth bass cooldown for sumptuous city-slicking, while the latter is a strident strut, more suited for confident daytime city-walking.

In 2021 they served up their superb album Roboganic but ow comes a first ever physical release from the pair. It features two of the standout cuts form the album and is pressed dup on lovely crushed orange wax. 'California' is a low slung disco groover with hip swing grooves and neat bass work under the timeless vocals, and on the flip 'Serial Jane' gets more busy with funky claps and muted guitar notes under catchy pop vocals.

Review: The popular Breaks & Beats series of light-touch, DJ-friendly re-edits of soul and funk classics has decided to reissue some of its most sought-after seven-inch singles on clear vinyl pressings. Fittingly, the first to get the reissue treatment is the label's first ever release from 2017. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's warm, heartfelt, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original is largely kept in-tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat. Flip for a similarly tasty rearrangement of Sweet Daddy Floyd's 1978 Blaxploitation style disco-funk shuffler "I Just Can't Help Myself", a cut rich in rolling breaks, densely layered percussion, punchy orchestration and "Shaft"-style guitar licks.
