Arthur Adams - "You Got The Floor" (5:54)
Millie Jackson - "We Got To Hit It Off" (4:42)
C-Brand - "Wired For Games" (8:38)
Review: Groovin Recordings is kicking off a new series in brilliant style here with three killer disco-boogie tracks. They were all first released between 1979 and 1982 and first up is Arthur Adams with 'You Got The Floor.' It's an uber cool groove with AOR vocals, loose drum funk and sprinkles of disco dust. There is more theatre to the soaring strings of Millie Jackson's 'We Got To Hit It Off' which has rickety drum loops and funky bass riffs. C-Brand's 'Wired For Games' closes won and might be the best of the lot with its coy male vocal, playful guitar twangs and nice raw claps.

Review: Alzaya is a boutique label from Milan that has put out a select few EPs over the last three years from names such as Paula Tape. Now it kicks off a new Various Artist series with five quality tunes. Akasha System's 'Midnight Tide' is a nice neon-lit future tech cut with bubbling, soft focus melodies. Tape Hiss offers the old school piano laced joy of 'Scirocco' and Manuel Darquart slips into deep cosmic house lushness with 'Low Tide.' The mellifluous melodies keep on coming with Cosmic Cherry and Nicodemo who offer a pair of sleek and stylish sounds.

Les Mondes Engloutis (Psychemagik main mix) (7:17)
Les Mondes Engloutis (Psychemagik 5am mix) (9:07)
Review: Martin Brodin's MB Disco imprint continues to deliver the good stuff, this time featuring two utterly essential Psychemagik mixes of Alico vs Cagri's "Les Mondes Engloutis". These mixes actually first surfaced on a digital-only release back in 2013, but now they've been buffed up for a full vinyl pressing, and rightly so. A side "Main Mix" is a full bodied, emotional banger with a lead drop to get crowds waving arms and singing along wholeheartedly. Our pick is the "5am Mix" on the flip though, where the synths take on a more shimmering nocturnal tone without losing that bright and bold character that will land this 12" in all manner of record bags this summer.

BG Baarregaard - "Astargardurinn (Endurged)" (6:34)
Closed Paradise - "Breakin' Down" (6:31)
Closed Paradise - "Wolf Sisters" (7:08)
Review: Heavyweight sunnyside nostalgia from Whiskey Disco faces old and new. Icelandic BG does what he does best and work a sample until it's looped so well you could listen to it for days on end. The highlight of his couplet being the sweet subtly filtered take on Passion's "Don't Stop My Love" on "Astarjatning". Closed Paradise takes us much deeper into the night with the sexier, groove-focused "Breakin' Down" while "Wolf Sisters" closes the show on a reflective, slo-mo minor key note. All sides of disco - old and new - covered right here. Beautiful.

Coyote - "San Raphael" (Rune Lindbaek & Oyvind Blikstad remix)
Review: Moonboots and Boardman's Aficionado label continues its sun-kissed sermons with this very special homage to the nylon six string. Famed Spanish guitarist Joan Biblioni lays down the roots of Balearica with this incredibly laidback web of twangs and ripples. Coyote echoes the same sentiment over a slightly more prominent beat and synth textures. Finally Rune Lindbaek and Blikstad provide their own Nordic twist where the guitar is eschewed for synth twinkles. Beautiful stuff.

C Da Afro - "Nothing But The Funk" (6:33)
Juan Soto - "All Is Full Of Love" (5:10)
Review: Super Spicy's Super Spicy Recipe series is back with a sixth mouthwatering offering and once again it's a super hot outing of party-ready house and disco sounds. First up is the irresistibly colourful disco charm of Birdee with the freewheeling 'Underground' and its groove-infused piano. Label boss Monsieur Van Pratt then adds his own spin to a rare groove classic with a lung-busting soul vocal and Pato Watson is in edit mode as he tweaks 'Ella Fue' to perfection. Italian don Paul Older brings some funky jazz fusion sounds to his steamy 'Turkish Lights, C. Da Afro keeps it a party with his 'Nothing But The Funk' and Mexican Juan Soto slips into a more deep and loved-up funk-house vibe on 'All Is Full Of Love'.

Bloodfire (aka Daz I Q )Volume VIII (dub)
Review: The Bloodfire series makes a return and it's summer vibes aplenty as Bugz In The Attic alumni Daz I Kue takes on the (original) 2-step boogie stylings of "Good Lovin' Is Good Livin" by Creative Source. The original is packed with such sing-along joy that the Bloodfire original mix doesn't mess with the template too much, merely advertising the Daz I Kue talent for percussive embellishments and beefed up bass. It's the accompanying dub mix where the Daz I Kue production skills come to the fore, extending the intro out for a delightful age before the soul flushed backing swoops through the channels and the track drops into a heavily chopped main section. A real delight of a twelve inch!

Review: It's a sizzling seven up for Moiss Music here as they draw together four different artists to offer up one cut each for this new various artists collection. Boogietraxx goes heavy on the filter vibes on 'S N T' which is French touch disco-house of the highest order. Kellit's 'Pryscoks Sockin Socks' is all about sultry sax lines and loose-limbed disco house beats while C Da Afro gets heads up with the streaming sunshine synths of 'Don't Be Quiet.' Groovemasta shut down with the funky Afro-disco stylings of 'Gonna Make U Rock.'

Review: Last year saw Greek edit wunderkind C Da Afro drop two joints on Cardiology amongst a whole load more discofied party fodder for the likes of SpinCat, Sound Exhibitions and more besides. Now he's back on Cardiology with even more goodies to share with the people in the place, leading in with intention through the rabble rousing 'Get On Your Feet'. He's working the filter hard on 'The Solution', teasing the funk until that sweet release on the drop. 'Disco Gang' whips up Backlash's classic '81 stomper 'Hang With The Gang' and gives it a gentle house injection, while 'Doing The Boogie' burrows deep into the groove for a simmering cut to keep the crowd loose and limber.

It's a C Da Afro special that bottles up timeless house and disco influences into something new and full of diva-energy and glossy synth strings. 'Lovely Boogie' is just that with its funky bass and pixelated stabs. Once again this increasingly vital studio whizz comes correct with a series of playful disco house bombs. 'Don't Give Up The Groove' plays with filters, layers up the funky riffs and soars on a diva vocal. Review: There should be no end to the amount of sunny afro disco tunes in your collection. Italian label Samosa are always happy to help with that and this latest outing by C. Da Afro is a perfect collision of soul and funk, jazz and afro styles. Opener "Afro-Disiac"'s horn leads, sultry sax lines and dub disco beats are perfection. "Smoothie" goes further with a bristling and earthy energy conjured by plenty of jangling rhythms and organic percussive sounds before the pumping and celebratory sounds of De Gama's "Re-Groove" of "Brazilian Groove" closes things out in fine fashion. Review:  Party days can't be that far away now, and Cardiology continue to have you covered with some of the choicest slabs in the edit game. This time it's C Da Afro on the buttons, shining bright after a massively productive 2020 in which he slipped out no less than five records. He's clearly not short on material to get busy on the slice and dice with, given the quality of the gear he's presenting on this new 12". As you'd expect for Cardiology the tracks aren't that easily trainspotted, ranging from the insanely catchy disco delights of 'Hustle' to the housed-up funk of 'Hold Up'. It's serious music for serious heads, but with that universal party starting appeal that any self-respecting disco edit should have.

Nnatn - "Magia Du Samba" (7:01)
Review: Some V/As are dubious in their length, seeming to span both EP and mini-compilation length in equal measure, but not this one, which definitely seems to know what it's about. Moiss Music are no stranger to this format, here presenting their second vinyl release 'Watermelon Jam' after the first EP-length four tracker, 'Strawberry Jam'. Nu-disco, funk and house is the name of the game once again, and the tone is set by C Da Afro's 'That Funky Horn' via sample-filtering soul and raucous trumpets. The vocal cuts on this record are among its highlights; Disco Endeavours' 'So High' carries Brandy-esque chirps along a funking house backdrop, while the best of the bunch - 'Feelin's Mutual' by Pookie Knights - channels Carmen or Sylvester in its syrupy refrains and jet-set arps. Even a samba house bit closes it off - a swell all-rounder.

Storia Fantasy (vocal version) (5:38)

Review: 'Storia Fantasy' is a second release from Reparto Vinile that again marries Italo influences to a range of different genres. The label is based in Monferrato in Italy (which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and it is helmed by influential Italian Luca Bernascone. Here he assumes his new production alias Cabopolonio for a super new single. The vocal version is a nice mood tempo roller with lush pines and cosmic twinkles, vibraphone melodies and a nice retro edge to it. The instrumental version is a little more deep and slow. The dub element means it seduces even more and marks a second fine drop from this label.

On The Prowl Presents OTP Party Breaks #5
Better Think Twice
Just Like Good Love

Hot Stop
Review: Runaway tyke Marcus Cabral was responsible for perhaps the best Party Breaks output to date with the extended brilliance of "Lifetime Groove" and he's back at the controls for On The Prowl's fifth Party Breaks release, offering up tweaks of vintage freestyle boogie, deep house and New Jersey style garage jackers. Naturally for a selector as gifted as Cabral, all the tracks here are arranged with club play in mind, leaning on raw drum machine programming and big vocals and melodies to hook your attention. The post disco Musiq Box stylings of "Better Think Twice" and the classic boompty stylings of "Non Stop" in particular are effective for exactly these reasons - some big old piano hooks on the latter!

I Can Tell You
FAB
Review: Not content with their joint record label endeavours On The Prowl and it's Party Breaks offshoot, Runaway duo Jacques Renault and Marcus Cabral are in various stages of launching their own independent keep vinyl alive projects. Cabral edges ahead of Jacques with the first release on his Hamilton Dance label that delivers four tracks of backwards glancing goodness. "Save The Day" opens proceedings with a ripe nod to one of the 80s biggest R & B divas, effortlessly laying down a warehouse friendly proto house groove before revealing the source. Just as good is "I Can Tell You" a stripped back vocal house number notable for some deft dubby vocal intonations. There's a slickness throughout that will appeal to fans of the Crosstown/Hot Creations sound. "FAB" is perhaps our favourite here, commencing with spectral analogues swinging rhythmically beneath the singular 808 thump and insistent bass drops. The tension grows before a bleep heavy drop into the excellent main section of scattergun drum machine crunches and analogue malfunctions. Essentially all four track blur the lines between straight up edits and all new compositions - which is all too rare these days!

On The Prowl Presents OTP Party Breaks #7
Latin Box (Marcos Cabral edit)
No Mistake (Kon 2079 mix)
Love Reaction (Jacques Renault edit)
Night Walker (WOOHOO mix)
Review: It's been a while since label bosses Cabral and Renault treated us to volume six but, as always with OTP, its well worth the wait. Cabral kicks off proceedings with a sludgy proto-house number that comes complete with some fantastic chopped up vocal work a la Kevin Aviance. Kon follows with a homage to the disco edit. Not to leave us languishing in the 70s for too long, "Love Reaction" whisks us forward to a packed warehouse in Chicago circa 1989. Big, roomy, boomy and laced with just the right amount of contemporary production, it's Renault at his darkest. "Night Walker" is the final piece of the edit puzzle; woozy, filtered and possibly the best example of a processed Cevin Fisher vocal ever, it's the ultimate funk finale.

Sect - "Thieve Scrilla"
Mugwump - "Dissidaze"
Review: Endless Flight cull a trio of exclusive cuts from the fourth volume of their I'm Starting To Feel OK mix series and place them across both sides of what is an essential 12 inch. Marcos Cabral drops a rare solo original production in "I'd Rather Smoke Alone" which adds some vintage Detroit sounds to the trademark retro house jacking rhythms, lots of soaring string arrangements, subtle percussion and key flourishes. Cabral is kept in good company with Soul Clap once again adopting their Sect alias on "Thieve Scrilla" with the Boston duo crafting a particularly dirty central bass melody. On the flip Belgian duo Mugwump add further credence to what's been a brilliant year with "Dissidaze2 which mutates back and forth from a menacing noirish acid throb into an unusually perky synth stomp several times over.

On The Prowl Presents OTP Party Breaks #1
Lifetime Groove (Marcos Cabral & Shux edit)
Lonely (Marcos Cabral mix)
Review: On the Prowl launch their new sub label with help from legendary New York house producer, Marcos Cabral. "OTP Party Breaks Volume 1," which also features collaboration between Cabral and Shux, drops two tracks of the warm, disco flavoured, deep house that is currently making a storm over in New York City.

This first release is poised to set the tone of the whole imprint, who are expected to put out distinctly NY flavoured records from the city's favourite artists and producers. Marcos Cabral from Runaway certainly fits the bill, having also released on the likes of DFA, I'm A Cliche, Muke and Rekids, he is a true legend on the city’s house scene. He collaborates with Chinatown Records partner Brennan Green on the EP's opening track, "Lifetime Groove," an epic twelve minute journey through laid back and groovy disco house. It has a classic feel right from the start with a retro bassline but with Balearic overtones and a dubby, feel good sentiment.

On the flip, Cabral lays his hand to Lil Louis' classic garage house track "Club Lonely." It is a simple rework, using straight forward loops and samples. The chord stabs keep the club vibes strong as repetitive saxophone flurries continue to build the tension. Bringing the 90s anthem up to date, Cabral gets a mainstay of Runaway’s set on record at long last.

Marcos Cabral brings us a slice of classic New York house on "OTP Party Breaks." By merging the old sounds of the city with the new, he has managed to make a lasting impression in the now. This will get everyone up on their feet.

Review: Hairy Claw is rapidly returning to the forefront of deep, tracky late night house music following a sabbatical. This new slice of music comes from Calculus (aka Gary Goodwin) and is formed of two excellent tracks. "Walrus Man" is a stabbing, Chicago groove with undulating bass and loose drums making it a swaggering dancefloor bomb. "Do You Feel My Love" has a silky funk touch with a peppy chorus and tight backing vocals running point over the shiny rippling wah wahs. "Dance On It" has more of a disco mentality with just the right amount of physical emotion running throughout. Written in the 80s, released in the 00s, vibed to in 2018, both cuts are timeless. Thank you Preservation.

Shining Of Life (2017 Full Moon mix) (15:13)
Shining Of Life (The House Thing - unreleased mix) (8:21)
Review: Calm's "Shining of Life", a nu-jazz era fusion of soulful U.S house influences, jazzy instrumentation and life-affirming goodtime vibes, first appeared in stores way back in 2004. Here the Japanese producer has chosen to revisit his noughties classic, serving up a brand new "2017 Full Moon Mix" that pushes the track's gospel style vocals, fluid pianos, mazy synths and tasty, disco-influenced grooves to the fore. It's a superb revision, all told, and arguably even better than the near peerless original. On the flip you'll find an unreleased version from the archives that sounds like some long lost Frankie Knuckles remix - all expansive, eyes-closed piano solos, tactile synth bass and unfussy Chicago house beats.

Uh Huh... (feat Mr Reed)
Review: After a brief appearance on No Regular Play's 2012 Endangered Species LP for Wolf & Lamb, John Camp debuts with the Credit Default Swap EP on Have A Killer Time. "All Ya Gotta" features the telephone filtered vocals of Mr Reed, as a popping bassline grooves down with funky synths and deeper keys, while the sidewalk swagger of "Michrodesia' sounds like a futuristic instrumental Isaac Hayes would love to serenade. "Credit Default Swap" pitches thick electric bass alongside sequenced drum machines, while a rocket launching synths climbs atmospherically, clearing the way for a (well known) midi sequenced melody to play out. "Uh Huh..." again feature Mr Reed's Romanthony-sounding vocals and it's the housiest

Beams Of Light (Alexis Raphael remix)
Beams Of Light (Crooked Man Crooked Colours remix)
Review: One of the many highlights of his Back In Flight School album, Miguel Campbell's understated deep house workout pulses with confidence and subtlety. Adding his own spoken word vocal is a risky move but it's one that pays off, adding a new dynamic on the breakdown. Remix-wise Alexis Raphael goes for an angular electro riff while Crooked Man Crooked Colours takes a leaf out of Benoit and Sergio's book and does loads of Balearic scribbles on it.

Not That Kind Of Girl
Not That Kind Of Girl (Mam remix)
Review: Having worked hard pushing his own Outcross label, Miguel Campbell is hitting the big time through his affiliation with Hot Creations, and this release should only serve to cement that burgeoning reputation. "Rockin' Beats" makes all the right moves with a clean disco house roll and a hooky vocoder rap turn, while Shadow Child creates a more intricate shuffle and moody synth line for his remix. "Not That Kind Of Girl" nods to Stephanie Mills' 80's gem "A Rush On Me", and sticks a rubbery boogie bassline underneath which should inspire grooving on dancefloors worldwide.

Heaven (6:55)
Nigeriac (7:01)
Review: Sao Paulo artist and About Disco label head Rafael Cancian once played Motor City Wine party in its native Detroit and was thought to hail from the city itself so synonymous was his sound with what the locals expected. As such he now steps up to Hot Pot with a new pair of edits starting with 'Heaven.' It's a fulsome cosmic disco stepper with low sling drums and plenty of shiny synths as well as soothing vocal coos that help take you to ecstasy. Flip it over and you will find 'Nigeriac' which is a syncopated mix of Afro funk and rock to shake your bones loose.

Isola Delle Rose (4:53)
Review: Rafael Cancian is something of a Brazilian wonderkid who makes much anticipated debut on Ravanelli Disco Club. He marks the label's 10th EP with a super sunny and life affirming selection of disco sounds that are coloured with a wide array of influences. There is a proto-house music feel to the filters, big strings and hip-swinging claps on 'The Music Box' which transports you right back to the 80s. 'Black Octopus' brings the funk with its big guitar licks and dazzling melodies while 'Katayef' gets all cool and sexy with its more seductive bass and drifts sax lines. 'Isola Delle Rose' then sends you home with a smile on your face thanks to its leggy groove and jazzy chords.

Dancin' & Prancin' (unreleased version)
Review: Pressed from rarer-than-hens-teeth acetate, these unreleased versions of Candido's genre-setting "Thousand Finger Man" and "Dancin' & Prancin'" remove the Salsoul disco gloss and present a much warmer, more authentic lo-fi vibe. Untouched in every other way, both cuts act as unique portals to a time when dancefloor science was still a mysterious alchemy... And proceed to show how forward-thinking Candido was. Limited to one per customer, this is highly limited. Grab it while you can.
