Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Body Music, a duo formed by Vito Roccoforte from NYC and Bosq from Medellin that have been strangely silent since tickling our fancy with a superb debut EP on Razor N Tape Reserve in early 2017. "Don't Think Twice", the lead cut from this belated follow-up, offers a neat summary of their developing sound, with guest vocalist Christian Holiday singing soulfully over cowbell-heavy disco percussion, dazzling nu-disco synth stabs and a Chicago house style analogue bassline. Holiday is also in fine form on slower flipside "Give My Love A Try", a seductive affair where chiming melodies and dreamy synths slowly rise above a glassy-eyed nu-disco groove. Two rock solid instrumentals complete a quietly impressive package.

Review: Sao Paulo artist and About Disco label head Rafael Cancian once played Motor City Wine party in its native Detroit and was thought to hail from the city itself so synonymous was his sound with what the locals expected. As such he now steps up to Hot Pot with a new pair of edits starting with 'Heaven.' He marks the label's 10th EP with a super sunny and life affirming selection of disco sounds that are coloured with a wide array of influences. There is a proto-house music feel to the filters, big strings and hip-swinging claps on 'The Music Box' which transports you right back to the 80s. 'Black Octopus' brings the funk with its big guitar licks and dazzling melodies while 'Katayef' gets all cool and sexy with its more seductive bass and drifts sax lines. Review: A genuine one off, largely made using the then-new Yamaha DX-7 synth, Joe Car's sole single from 1984 has long been one of the rarest Italo-disco 12" singles around. This reissue has been a long time coming, with the revitalised Best Record finally securing the rights to re-release it earlier this year. It remains a fun and surprisingly on-point release. It appears in two takes, both of which we think were laid to tape at the time. On the A-side you'll find the 'Electro Potato Mix', where chiming lead lines, Fairlight style sampled stabs and male vocals rise above a chuggig, arpeggio style bassline and machine drums. Nestled on the flip is the original vocal version, which sounds like the sort of thing Chris Lowe from Pet Shop Boys may have been dancing to during the period - there are certainly a few cuts in the duo's earlt catalogue that utilise similar sounds and grooves.

Review: Assault on Precinct 13 is a 1976 action thriller written, directed, scored, and edited by the one and only John Carpenter. Here the iconic main theme is presented on a special new 12" with a John Anthony Scratch mix. That goes first and layers in a motorik kick beneath the signature sci-fi chords. It's a real heater with some added scratches which are sort of weirdly out of place but brilliant. A second, only slightly different remix is also included, making this a perfect slab for those wanting to being a little sci-fi mystique to their sets.

Review: The Carver Area High School Seniors' 'Get Live '83 (The Senior Rap)' is a stone cold party hip hop classic. It has been out of print for some four decades, however, and so has become a rather hard to find and expensive record. Thankfully, Soul Jazz Records have got the rights to this full reissue which was first pressed in 1982 on the private press label Challenger. The cut featured as the standout on Soul Jazz Records' recent 'Yo! Boombox' collection and now standalone as a seven minute stunner. It's an old school party disco delight with great rap and killer beats, all presented with the original artwork.

Review: Casbah 73 makes his Glitterbox Recordings debut here with a slice of disco so funky and soulful that you will not be able to get it out of your heart or head. The big vocal hook is what drives the whole tune forward and is from Angela Goode, who sounds utterly timeless. Although it's a brand new tune it drips with that 70s authenticity and comes with a Percussion Jam, noodling remix from Body & Soul man Danny Krivit who draws out the breaks, and then a more steamy and freeform version from Rahaan who makes more of the jazzy keys.

Review: Back in November 2018, Oli Stewart AKA Casbah 73 delivered his most wholehearted tribute to the disco era yet, the brilliant "Love Saves The Day". On "To Be Free", he continues in a similar vein, doffing a cap to the pioneers of the Philly Soul sound via cut-glass strings, crunchy Clavinet lines, tasty electric piano solos, walking bass and a lead vocal from Angela (Angie) Gooden that stirs memories of disco divas of old. Stewart and his cohort of musicians go a little wild on the mostly instrumental disco-funk flipside, an exercise in dueling solos, lusty Latin horns, flanged guitars and heavy percussion that will get you hot under the collar for nine, all-action minutes. Brilliant stuff from start to finish from the experienced producer: don't sleep on this one.

Review: Marc Cerrone is a legendary producer, known for laying much of the glitzy groundwork for French disco and electronic music. Now releasing the standalone single 'For You', a track made "with the desire to get back to all the musical sensations I've experienced in 50 years", the piece is a hypnotic cityscape meant to dazzle and delight. Both the Long and Edit versions heard on this 12" version from Malligator are odes to the pure abstract form of disco, one untainted by temporal imperfections and tailor-made for DJs, yet still tempered by live recordings and analogue flavours.

Review: Fresh from the Harlem hotpot, 1980: Harold Sargent's Chain Reaction teamed up with Sound Of New York's founder and producer Peter Brown for a star-lit, horn-baked, organ-licked disco creation that still funks hard 36 years down the line. 'Dawn Breaker' opens up with freewheeling melodies and loose drum breaks that makes for a nice sunny vibe run through with jazzy Rhodes action. It comes from the BBC 6 Music host, TV legend turned funk and soul tastemaker Craig Charles who has put together a couple of sizzling edits. First up he layers a classic Hot Chocolate sample over a rolling and rubbery beat and bassline that will pump any dancefloor. On the flip is a more slow and seductive sound in 'Rok On' with its funky bass and sleazy vocals over low-slung and slo-mo beats. Review: It would be fair to say that Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is timeless; an Italo-disco classic that has aged far better than many of its cheesy contemporaries. Recorded and released in 1983, the track is far more cosmic and intergalactic in feel than many of its synth-pop influenced contemporaries, doffing a cap to U.S electro as well as the electronic disco productions of Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley. It became something of a dancefloor anthem in Chicago and Detroit on the eve of the house and techno revolutions and remains one of the best electronic dance records of all time. Here both the vocal and instrumental versions are presented in re-mastered form on hand numbered vinyl. If you don't already own a copy, snap one of these up pronto.

Review: Charles Green, who performed under the name Chas, released his debut album For Your Love on Love Joy Records in 1985. The album's soulful r&b accompanied Green's smooth vocals and heartfelt lyrics at the forefront. The album's title track was also released as a single and received some airplay on radio stations at the time and helped to establish Green as a promising new voice in the soul and r&b music scenes. Green went on to be a keyboardist for boogie, funk, soul and house releases such as Scott Grooves & Roy Ayers 'Expansions' in 1998 among others.

Review: It was 2010 when Dimitri From Paris first got his hands on the parts to some of Chic's biggest hits, with some of the resultant revisions appearing on an expansive "Chic Organization" box-set. Glitterbox has been reissuing them all over a series of 12" singles, with this volume boasting the Parisian's vocal and instrumental versions of both "My Forbidden Lover" and "I Feel Your Love Comin' On". The latter is a deliciously dubbed out affair that pushes the track's heavy electrofunk-meets-disco-funk groove to the fore, with flashes of Nile Rodgers' razor-sharp guitar riffs and echoing vocal snippets rising and falling throughout the mix. It's the versions of "My Forbidden Lover", complete with stunning orchestral breakdowns and extended instrumental breaks, that really set the pulse racing, though.

Review: Cho and Random Impetus's debut 7" comes straight out of New York City. It is a powerful call to humanity as well as a summons to the dance floor that rides on irresistibly squelchy bass lines and with glorious disco drums and new age flutes. There is a strong original 70s vibe to this thanks to the jazz, funk, soul and disco melodies and some great vocal work that is silky and soulful. Review: Riccardo Cioni is well-known as a mastermind behind early Italo disco, coming up in the Florentine disco scene with his troupe, Bella Band. His later solo outings, first made on the cusp of the 1980s, marked a more electronic shift, and 'Darkness Inside' is a strong example of his best work from that time. First released in '84, the three tracks on this early nu-disco heater cement Cioni's chops as a deft, swift and talented producer, with vocoded jams such as 'Go Break' and city slap-bassers like the title track locking in something timelessly futurologic. It could only ever have been a product of its time, though; these are three serene, yet hard-hitting, proto-nu-disco bangers.

Review: Riccardo Cioni's 'Fog' has been passed over to a fine selection of artists for this new remix EP on Mondo Groove. The original is a stone-cold 1984 Italo classic that is dark and obscure and was made in Cioni's garage studio on a PPG Wave 2.2, Linn 9000 and Phophet 5. First to rework it is the legendary Morgan Geist who layers the snappy drums and ricocheting synths, while Tiger & Woods get more playful with some unhinged synth effects and chopped-up vocals. NOIA keeps it raw with some nice analogue electro-disco goodness and Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi team up for a loose limbed and stripped-back rhythm with funky bass riffs.

Review: Electro Wayne's mid 80s-focused Circuitry project get busy on Peoples Potential Unlimited with two starlit synth boogie originals; "She's Just That Type Of Girl" is a playful east coast funk flex with a slight freestyle touch to it. Harmonies, light touches on the keys and exceptional drum production, it's a sassy slice that will warm-up any floor. Review: Although their collaborative releases as Black Spuma are more sporadic than we may like, Fabrizio Mammarella and Phillip Lauer never fail to deliver the goods on the rare occasions that they get together in the studio. The Hypercall EP is their first joint effort for two years and sees them pitch up on Live at Robert Johnson for the first time following a series of inspired outings on International Feel and Futureboogie Recordings. Review: Originally written by Leroy Burgess and James Calloway for Patrick Adams' Phreek, iconic NYC disco boogie gem "The Weekend" enjoyed a Class Action re-up in 1983 with two bonafide mixing titans at the controls; M&M and Larry Levan. The former was all about the big synth gloss and a really broad groove while Levan gave it a serious DJ twist with a two minute intro that really broken down each element. Party time.

Review: Vintage Pleasure Boutique is an excellently named label out of Poland that is fast approaching its 20th releases. This latest 12" is another dazzling Italo disco gem that arrives on translucent yellow vinyl. Claudia T.'s 'Fatal Destination' arrived originally back in 1989 at the height of the genre's popularity and very much takes you back there with its cold but compelling synth sounds and crashing drums, all very reminiscent of the era. The soaring vocals brings the glorious hook next to zippy lead synths. This was a bit hit back in the day and is sure to win over just as many global dancers second time around.

The boundlessly potentiated space between disco, dance and jazz is their game, and 'Tropical Disco Volume 23' proves they can win it time and time again. Four tracks of trumpetting 4x4 glory-buzz dominate this EP. Clean Is Good wipes the floor with disco-edit edge, while Moodena comes through with a mighty mood of motor city madness, and Sartorial and Infrasoul share the B-side with a pair of broken, drum-banging and glass-shattering instrumentals. Review: Big up SB Editz for making it to the mini milestone of a 10th release, when so many initially well-minded labels don't even get this far. The cause for celebration draws out some superb reworks from Joe Cleen who opens with a rugged, funk-infused disco cut 'Every Little Thing.' 'Conga' then gets a little more playful with some natty chord work and playful trumpets. 'Bathroom Break' is a cosmic exploration with plenty of dazzling disco dust sprinkled over the top and 'Morning Sugar' then closes out on a cool groove, with poolside bass riffs, soulful keys and a chunky groove powering it along.

Review: Brit-funk group Cloud made a big impact back in the 80s. They were part of an exciting and emerging scene that fused funk, soul, jazz and more and their catalogue continues to get plenty of attention even now, decades on. Backatcha last served up their Visions EP back in February and now they look to their This Is Your Woman 12" which opens with the title track complete with its brilliant female vocals and low-key funky disco beats. Review: Patrick Adams was responsible for producing tons of terrific disco records during the late 1970s and early '80s, but few are quite as dizzyingly good as Cloud One's 1976 cut 'Atmosphere Strut'. Created by Adams with the assistance of regular collaborator Peter Brown, the 9-minute plus track is notable for the extensive use of superbly spacey synthesizer lines, an infectious deep disco groove and a typically head-in-the-clouds lead vocal from Margo Williams. This reissue naturally offers-up Adams' original, must-have 12" club mix, but also a brand-new re-edit from disco rework specialist KON. He lengthens the intro, beefs up the bass and makes crafty use of some improvised vocals from Adams and Williams that were previously buried on the multi-track master tapes.

Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

Review: Since 2012, Munich duo COEO has served up a swathe of sample heavy, disco influenced house EPs for such labels as Let's Play House, Toy Tonics, Lagaffe Tales and Razor-N-Tape Reserve. Here they pop up on Razor-N-Tape's main edit label with something different: a quartet of traditional scalpel works from their personal stash. First up is the elastic, horn heavy disco-funk of "Express Lane", which is quickly followed by the skewed Arabic boogie-funk brilliance of "Libyan Sun".
