Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Review: Groovin Recordings is kicking off a new series in brilliant style here with three killer disco-boogie tracks. They were all first released between 1979 and 1982 and first up is Arthur Adams with 'You Got The Floor.' It's an uber cool groove with AOR vocals, loose drum funk and sprinkles of disco dust. There is more theatre to the soaring strings of Millie Jackson's 'We Got To Hit It Off' which has rickety drum loops and funky bass riffs. C-Brand's 'Wired For Games' closes won and might be the best of the lot with its coy male vocal, playful guitar twangs and nice raw claps.

Review: 'Storia Fantasy' is a second release from Reparto Vinile that again marries Italo influences to a range of different genres. The label is based in Monferrato in Italy (which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and it is helmed by influential Italian Luca Bernascone. Here he assumes his new production alias Cabopolonio for a super new single. The vocal version is a nice mood tempo roller with lush pines and cosmic twinkles, vibraphone melodies and a nice retro edge to it. The instrumental version is a little more deep and slow. The dub element means it seduces even more and marks a second fine drop from this label.

Review: Parisian crew Discomatin have come up with some little known boogie brilliance here from Belgian producer Jay Alansky, with lyrics by Jacques Duvall and falsetto vocals from Clara Capri. It's a fine fusion of Italo disco basslines, shimmering electronics and 80s pop and r&b, with more than a hint of early house vibes also thrown in for good measure. All remastered from the original tapes, the tracks are loud and crisp and are perfect dance floor hymns. The long version is the one DJs will reach for, with its sleek lines and hypnotic leads all finished with some elastic bass.

Review: A genuine one off, largely made using the then-new Yamaha DX-7 synth, Joe Car's sole single from 1984 has long been one of the rarest Italo-disco 12" singles around. This reissue has been a long time coming, with the revitalised Best Record finally securing the rights to re-release it earlier this year. It remains a fun and surprisingly on-point release. It appears in two takes, both of which we think were laid to tape at the time. On the A-side you'll find the 'Electro Potato Mix', where chiming lead lines, Fairlight style sampled stabs and male vocals rise above a chuggig, arpeggio style bassline and machine drums. Nestled on the flip is the original vocal version, which sounds like the sort of thing Chris Lowe from Pet Shop Boys may have been dancing to during the period - there are certainly a few cuts in the duo's earlt catalogue that utilise similar sounds and grooves.

Review: .No, this is not a surprise jazz-funk outing from Dan 'Caribou' Snaith, but rather a reissue of the sole single that French outfit Cortex released as Caribou, way back in 1977. Copies of that record are now very hard to come by, so it's great that Trad Vibe have delivered this fresh edition. It's worth picking up for 'Californie' alone. The track is a near perfect fusion of the Gallic ensemble's usual loose jazz-funk sound and energetic, sun-drenched disco - all breathless electric piano solos, memorable guitar licks, dancefloor-friendly grooves and spiralling group vocals. Original flipside 'Stevie', a more relaxed and loved-up affair closer in tone to Cortex's usual material, once again resides on the reverse.

Review: Hot on the heels of this one first being reissued back in May, it now gets a second run courtesy of Disques Messager out of France. Cristina Camargo's 'Moral Tem Hora' was one of the standouts from the super Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds (1978 - 1982: selected by Junior Santos) compilation. It's a perfect fusion of Latin flair, Brazilian disco and jazz funk magic that has fat bass riffs and lots of bright chords and busy percussion next to a classic vocal. On the flip things get slower, sentimental and all loved up on 'Minas Do Rei Salomao' which his a perfectly steamy jam for those hot afternoons under the sun.

Review: Assault on Precinct 13 is a 1976 action thriller written, directed, scored, and edited by the one and only John Carpenter. Here the iconic main theme is presented on a special new 12" with a John Anthony Scratch mix. That goes first and layers in a motorik kick beneath the signature sci-fi chords. It's a real heater with some added scratches which are sort of weirdly out of place but brilliant. A second, only slightly different remix is also included, making this a perfect slab for those wanting to being a little sci-fi mystique to their sets.

Review: Oceanic Zones is a brand new album on a brand new label. CCO is the artist and the fledgling label is Silum which is brought to us from the Liechtenstein Alps via Zurich. This is a stylish electro outing with elastic chords and silky pads that all, we are told, explore 'the layers of the sea.' The A-side is the more cheerful and represents the light-flowed upper regions of the ocean while the flip side is where things get darker and more menacing, as you would expect as you head down to the ocean floor.

Review: Marc Cerrone is a legendary producer, known for laying much of the glitzy groundwork for French disco and electronic music. Now releasing the standalone single 'For You', a track made "with the desire to get back to all the musical sensations I've experienced in 50 years", the piece is a hypnotic cityscape meant to dazzle and delight. 'Dawn Breaker' opens up with freewheeling melodies and loose drum breaks that makes for a nice sunny vibe run through with jazzy Rhodes action. This '45' marks the launch of a new series along similar lines, with each release boasting two hard-to-find tracks accompanied by their original cover art (one on the front, the other on the back). On side A you'll find 'Give It Up' by Belgian band Charms, a warming and loved-up chunk of boogie/mid-80s soul brilliance stacked with luscious synth sounds, rubbery bass guitar and eyes-closed male lead vocals. Review: Riccardo Cioni's 'Fog' has been passed over to a fine selection of artists for this new remix EP on Mondo Groove. The original is a stone-cold 1984 Italo classic that is dark and obscure and was made in Cioni's garage studio on a PPG Wave 2.2, Linn 9000 and Phophet 5. First to rework it is the legendary Morgan Geist who layers the snappy drums and ricocheting synths, while Tiger & Woods get more playful with some unhinged synth effects and chopped-up vocals. NOIA keeps it raw with some nice analogue electro-disco goodness and Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi team up for a loose limbed and stripped-back rhythm with funky bass riffs.

Review: For their latest journey into re-edit/original production fusion, Brooklyn's Razor 'N' Tape crew has turned to Munich duo COEO, who have previously impressed via fine outings on Toy Tonics and Let's Play House. The four-tracks here, which all blend samples from classic recordings with their own drums and musical flourishes, all sound like guaranteed dancefloor winners. Check, for example, the breezy Afro-beat-goes-disco cheeriness of "Nigerian Affair", the wonderfully rich keys and organic deep house bump of "Pajama Stomp", and the riotous, high-octane disco-house loop-funk of "Long Night Ahead". Best of all, though, is opener "Like It Is", a sweet, dewy-eyed, string-drenched soul revision that achieves the perfect balance between dancefloor grunt, and paying due reverence to the German duo's horn-heavy source material.

Here they pop up on Razor-N-Tape's main edit label with something different: a quartet of traditional scalpel works from their personal stash. Review: Veritable mind-readers, the anonymous artist Comb Edits have us clairvoyantly sussed. They know we feel it. Coming through the Norwich-based I Travel To You label for their third release, this release amounts to two edits of older songs whose origin, we're ashamed to admit, we can't track down. Honest, live and funky, the tracks span two sides of the same coin, with 'I Know You Feel It' a convincing slo-mo funk edit, and 'What A Night' a cosmick, reverb-laden freakout version of a Japanese obscurio.

'Delectable U' first featured on the pair's CD-only 2012 album Private Conversations and features core members Joshua Bageley and Juanita Tippins in full-on revivalist 80s soul mood - all rubbery bass guitar, glossy FM synth sounds, eyes-closed lead vocals and slow-motion S.O.S Band beats. Review: Nicola Conte is one of the central figures in the Schema story, and his nu jazz and broken beat partnership with Gianluca Petrella has yielded some golden music in recent years. Nigeria originally came out in 2018, and then last year popped up on the duo's People Need People LP, but now it's getting a proper remix treatment which sees Tall Black Guy twisting the track out as a heady disco house roller for sundown moments when you need a little jazzy flair in the proceedings. That version comes in vocal and instrumental versions, and then the mighty Andres steps up for one of his simmering groove escapades as he delivers an extended remix of 'African Spirits'.

Review: Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too.

Review: Danish-German production duo Cool Million (Frank Ryle, Robert 'Rob' Hardt) are specialists in nu-disco and neo-boogie. Until late, they've flaunted this expertise via their renditions of old funk standouts, be that from the likes of Donald Byrd or James Brown. Here, however, the pair team up with Tomas Thordarson for a front-and-centre G-funker of the squeeziest quality, 'My Life', whose lyrics match its form via mentions of 'cutting like a knife' rhymed, of course, with 'paradise'. The instrumental dub is just as glassy and arid, its standout element being the huge, zesty, quivering chords marking out the phrase transitions.

Review: It's a damn shame Cool Runners aka the duo of Paul Tattersall and Chris Rodel and was such a short-lived group because the tunes they made are next level. This reissue proves that with their 1982 single 'Checking Out' served up on a 12" with the sought-after 'High on a Feeling' on the flip. The open is lush street soul with boogie bass and twanging funk guitar riffs topped off with a gorgeous vocal. The second offering 'High On A Feeling' has leggier drums and more of a disco feel, but still plenty of brilliant boogie in the bass. Two cult classics, then.

Review: Razor-N-Tape's Family Affair series makes a welcome return here with a third great instalment. This series is something of an annual end-of-year tradition by now (OK, it's arriving a touch late) and this one hits as hard as any with five tracks taken from the full and standout compilation. It is two great remixes of classic RNT material that gets things underway with Ezel offering a dub of Cor.ece and Bruce Leroys sublime deep hose mix of Guinu, then JKriv's 'Better Than Her' is a fat bottomed bit of deep cut electro funk and elsewhere Kim Anh gets raw and cosmic, and Cody Currie's 'Ghost' is broken beat perfection.

Review: Rose Cornelius recorded these tunes in the late 70s, but never released them. They were thought by all those involved to be lost, but fortunately that wasn't the case. Rose was part of a band that saw big success and dropped albums in 1972 and 1973 but before then she was part of the Gospel Jazz Singers in the late 60's. It was her mother who asked her to come back and be part of the band, which whom she stayed until 1976. However, these tunes were recorded during that solo period in Miami and then unearthed by collector Dave Thorley who saw and bought online an old acetate disc credited to Rose Cornelius. This is glorious disco house music packed with soul.

Review: Reportedly an alias for a former member of legendary, Factory Records-signed outfit The Duratti Column, The Cosmologist is a dub effects loving re-editor whose occasional vinyl missives are always worth checking. Volume five arrives nearly eight years after its predecessor and delivers two undeniably heavy concoctions. On A-side 'Spin', he delivers a deliciously dubbed-out, delay-laden rearrangement of a particularly percussive, NYC no-wave disco outing - all dense, pots and pans percussion, jaunty piano motifs and urgent vocals. Over on side B, 'Water' is a fine revision of an obscure, lesser-known, Kwaito-esque chugger - a kind of synth-sporting, mid-80s cover of (we think) Fela Kuti that sounds like a guaranteed dancefloor winner.

Review: 'Primitive World' is perhaps not one of Patrick Cowley's more celebrated tracks, though it is a genuinely slept-on gem. First featured on the late synth disco pioneer's 1982 album 'Mind World', the track is a three-minute blast of ultra-percussive Afro-disco largely free of Cowley's famous synth sounds. HiFi Sean has done a good job of reinventing the track on this fine suite of remixes, first offering up a 'remix' that adds energy and intensity via the addition of twisted TB-303 acid lines, starry synth melodies and tuneful electronic motifs. He also contributes a fine chant-free 'dub', a DJ mix-friendly 'bonus beats' tool, and a handy effects-laden acapella. Throw in an on-point edit and you've got an excellent package.

Review: The Crates Motel crew make a head turning debut here with this inaugural release featuring some red hot classic all reworked with great care and plenty of dancefloor aplomb. Up first is 'Eye No You', a belting vocal cut with big disco energy that will have the floor in raptures. Things get slower and funkier on 'Beyond Far' with its loose and live drums and withering chords under a familiar riff. On the B-side the temp gets turned up again with 'More Eye', a Philly disco cut complete with lavish strings and raw male vocals full of heart wrenching soul. Last of all is 'Rock The Dance', a disco version of an epic Clash cut that is pure fun.

Review: After a superb repress of the Volvo Una Hit Italo classic, Bottin's Cristalli Liquidi project is back and this time in cahoots with French-Italiano electro pair Deux Control which is Justine Forever and Rodion. They have cooked up a selection of versions of 'Rosso Carnale' which, we understand, lyrically touches on the colour red and the gentle carnal forces of nature sung in Italian. There is a sped-up version from Bottin, a sparse mix from Deux Control and standout Mutant version with tougher drums but nice silky dub chords and a bright Italo version full of 80s synth nostalgia.

Review: Don't let the "Coldwave" tag fool you: this EP from Dutch archival imprint Music From Memory is every bit as glassy-eyed and loved-up as the rest of their left-of-centre, Balearic-minded catalogue. German drummer and composer Curt Cress first released "Dschung Tek" in 1992, layering his own dense tribal drums across a tropical, ambient house and dream house influenced backing track on the brilliant "Long Version", before stripping it back to a loved-up, Ibiza-friendly house cut on the "No Live Drums" version. Both mixes can be found on this reissue, alongside a trio of similarly percussive, tropical-minded cuts from the artist's 1983 LP, "Avanti". All three are ace and almost as good as the more floor-focused title track.

Review: Cuts From The Vaults is the latest in a long line of "mystery" edit labels, with some of the material on show originally appearing on various obscure, now hard-to-find white labels at various points over the last two decades. The A-side features two tweaks of 'Shot' (AKA Eric Clapton's reggae-rock cover of Bob Marley's 'I Shot The Sheriff') - a slightly dubbed-out, reworked and extended full vocal version, and the arguably superior, groove-based 'Special Dub'. Over on the flip, 'Bossarocker' sees the Doors' 'Break On Through' get the rework treatment. The 'Bossa edit' is a bossanova beat-powered rework of a live recording, while the 'Break On edit' is a punchy, subtly breakbeat-driven revision of a bluesy studio recording. Review: Soul meets speed garage on this new V/A EP from Z Records, blurring the lines between the genres in just the way we like it. The opening track - Grant Nelson's mix of 'Starlight' by Dave & Omar - is a euphoric, piano-laced uplifter which both sonically and lyrically urges us to reach for the sky. That's followed by the DJ Fudge production 'Everything' by Chocolate Fudge Band, featuring lots of live instrumentation and a Curtis Mayfield style vocal, while over on the flip, 'Looking For You' proves to be a deep and bouncy cut filled with soulful Motown vocal chops and an organ workout worthy of any Sunday service, over a beautifully wonky house framework.
