To Rack & Ruin Vol 9 (limited hand-numbered 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RR 010. Rel: 26 Jan 15
  1. Sean Lives
  2. Rustic Rage (feat Flash Atkins)
Review: Speeding through the neon sky and hunting replicants everywhere...Deckard makes his debut on To Rack & Ruin. First up is Sean Lives which, stomps along with enough guitar twangs and honky tonk piano chords that would make this cut sound right at home at a James Brown after party. A catchy vocal throughout before an almighty breakdown that sneaks in one of the finest saxophone solos heard since that guy in The Lostboys. On Rustic Rage Deckard joins Paper Recordings' debauched debonair of disco Flash Atkins taking in a lesser known cut from "The Man In Black" himself. We start things off with a solid 4/4 kick alongside a guitar loop that build n builds n builds like a dance floor locomotive albeit one that's draped with squelchy synths & popping percussion before dropping with vocals that's guaranteed to cause hand blisters from a serious clap along...

  2. Mirdza Zivere - "Vienmer But" (Fulgeance edit) (5:02)
  3. Tatyana Kochergina - "Igray Skripka Igray" (DJ Scientist edit) (6:53)
Review: The love of all things Soviet and disco has been established by French/German duo Fulgeance and Scientist for several years now, having reached a peak last year with their album The Soviet Tape on First Word. Now they return with their own edit series on brand new label Excursions. With eyes squared fully on the floor, each obscurity is given some serious groove muscle for the floor... Charaunitsy's soulful croons and yearning horns are given an additional kick/snare swing, Latvia's Mirdza gets a deliciously camp turbo charge while Ukraine's Tatyana Kochergina gets a full-on Philly treatment with lavish strings and a bassline that won't say nyet.

  2. Opus Dreams (2:08)
  3. So Long For A Small Storm (Rudolf Klorzeiger remodel) (4:25)
Review: Spacer lady Dollska (nee Dollskabeat) gets busy on her on own Kissa imprint with two beautifully spacious journeys into modern cosmic. "So Long For A Small Storm" rolls unhurriedly with a Morgan Geist feel to the beats and groove while "Opus Dreams" takes us deeper into the stars again as stretched out synths charm and alarm in equal measure as we find ourselves floating freefall with no apparent start, middle, or end. For added floor-fire head straight for Rudolf Klorzeiger's devilishly Detroitian remix where the beats are sharpened by classic 80s electro drama.

The Marco Tardelli EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ROTH 11. Rel: 07 Nov 16
  1. Kratos (5:57)
  2. 400 Fonk (4:02)
  3. Kratos (Daniele Baldelli Electropsychomix) (6:23)
Review: It's quite a surprise that perennial Italian disco jammer DJ Rocca hasn't linked up with Rothmans before, but on the label's first release of 2016 he makes up for lost time with a grip of tracks positively dripping with full-fat synthy goodness. "Kratos" packs in a serious Italo thrum with its wonderful arpeggio bassline, bursting with optimism as every buoyant lead line piles on top of the forward-marching beat. "400 Fonk" meanwhile flips the script with a cheeky, bouncy beast of an analogue jam to get heads nodding like Wally Badarou just took the controls. Daniele Baldelli then blasts "Kratos" into the stratosphere with his muscular "Electropsychomix".

Let's Go Party (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EDSC 005. Rel: 16 Mar 15
  1. Let's Go Party (original)
  2. Let's Go Party (Brioski remix)
  3. Slumber (original)
  4. Slumber (El Diablo's Social Club remix)
Review: After taking us on a drug chug at the start of the year DJ Rocca serves up 2 tracks for the next EDSC Release.

Lets Go Party kicks things off.... stabby chords, Roland percussion, catchy vocal shots, bass-line and massive E'd up breakdowns make this a must have slate for your box.

Th remix comes in the form of an Italo banger from a fave of the El Diablo's cartel - Brioski who goes straight for the heart of the dance floor and rips it right out.

Slumber slows the pace down a bit sounding like something from a late 70's Italian horror movie...pulsating chords & echoey piano reminiscent of Claudio Simonetti & John Carpenter.

El Diablo's Social Club remix stays in the same vein making making sparse use of the eerie piano whilst adding a chuggy bassline, heavy arps and some extra guitars courtesy of Crazy P's Tim Davies.

  2. Dilemma (vocal original) (4:12)
  3. Dilemma (Garage mix) (5:16)
  4. Dilemma (Garage radio edit) (3:26)
Review: Following appearances on the interconnected Distant Hawaii and Lobster Theremin labels, DJ Sonikku (AKA British producer Tony Dowson) drops a mysterious, hand-stamped 12". It boasts contrasting versions of the previously unheard "Dilemma", a chiming and bouncy concoction that joins the dots between thrusting proto-house, Yellow Magic Orchestra and cheery '80s synth-pop. The latter influence is clearer on the 'Original Vocal' version, which makes great use of a relatively well-known acapella. On the flip, Dowson gives the track a radical overhaul, laying the ultra-positive original melodies over a sparse but weighty, two-step influenced groove. It's not garage in the traditional sense, and some may find it a little on the sickly-sweet side. There's no denying, though, that it sounds like a scene anthem in the making.

  4. Save That Magic Feeling (Siren remix) (6:30)
Review: You couldn't get more authenticity on one record if you tried... Certified selector dons DJ Pippi and Willie Graff bless the dance with their first official studio collaboration since 2007's "Hyper Space" on Drumpoet. The wait's been worth it; "Save That Magic Feeling" is a purring Balearic deep house soul jam with a strong vocal allure while "Everything's Groovin' On" eases back on a cool low-swung break groove and looped vocal harmonies to seductive effect. Remix-wise Ron Basejam strips it back for an early 2000s Classic Music Company style late night twist while Siren continues the stripped back theme but in a much sleazier, slippery funk way. Magic.

Review: Dane//Close is sounding fierce as hell on this 7" edit grip for the ever-excellent Duca Bianco. Having previously moonlighted on Power Station and Prasens Editionen, you know this is a head with an instinct for alternative selections to make you move. On the A side, he tackles the incendiary "I Don't Wanna Go Out" by iconic Australian punks X (not to be confused with the LA band), stretching out the rowdy groove of the original's two-minute burst. On the B side, things take a slinkier turn into oddball boogie sleaze - the source material isn't so easy to detect, but it's definitely a jam to get low tempo lovers moving.

  1. Strung Out
  2. Prescriptions
Review: Late last year Los Angeles-based synth obsessive Nicholas Benedek made his PPU bow with a untitled album filled with untitled tracks, executed with the sort of lo-fi panache that fit the label to a tee. Here Benedek returns to PPU as RX, a rather surprising self-styled 'smog prog' project with LIES artist and LA Club Resources boss Delroy Edwards. Taking shape in a signature PPU 7 inch, both "Strung Out" and "Prescriptions" sound like a fine balance between the hazy boogie of Benedek and the tape degraded grit that's been a hallmark of Edwards work since his emergence on L.I.E.S.

  4. The Blade (5:30)
Review: Thomas Smorek, aka Dunkeltier, was last seen lurking on Bahnsteig 23 back in 2015, and now he's back under a fog of VHS fuzz with madcap sampling and off-kilter disco freakiness in abundance for all the freaky dancers. "Arcade" has a motorik pulse to it, and one of the best warbling bell chime sounds we've heard in a long time. It's a creepy, but deceptively funky beast. "Arabian Town" is a more post punk flavoured cut with raw live instrumentation and vocals that seem to channel Joy Division, Siouxsie & The Banshees and The Cramps in the same breath. "Ce Soir" is a synth heavy affair purpose built to disorientate and disturb, while "The Blade" brings a stomping industrial death march mixed with twanging psych guitar ramblings. Yet more distinctive heat from the Bahnsteig crew then.

Review: Wah Dubplate cannot and will not be stopped. The incorrigible little bootleg unit marches on with its usual mishmash of funky, disco-friendly edits from the most improbable of producers out there and this latest outing is another minor success in what is a whole catalogue of hidden gems. Italy's Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo turn up sounding wild and soulful; the farmer's opening edit of "Bobby's Grapevine" does the Mo-Town tricks, while the latter's re-visioning of "Billy's Missus" gives the original 'hey, Mrs.Robison!' a nice little dance makeover. Sweet as a nut.

  2. Don Beto - "Nao Quero Mais" (2:11)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing Brazil 45s series, Mr Bongo has decided to change tack. The two tracks showcased here are from the golden age of Brazilian boogie. On the A-side you'll find Marcos Valle's "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago", a largely overlooked cut from his 1981 full-length Vontade De Rever Voce. While not as instantly as infectious as some of his better-known singles, it's still superb; a breezy, blue-eyed soul cut full of rising horns and sweet Portuguese vocals. On the B-side, you'll find Don Beto's 1978 disco-funk jam "Nao Quero Mais", a superb track that was seemingly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".

Review: Fresh from his impeccable Fabric mix, in which he lays down nothing but his own creations, Dan Snaith finally unleashes some of the mix's many highs for our own mixing pleasure. "Face To Face" has been anticipated for a while thanks to its sultry stripped-back loose-stringed groove and late-entering vocal, "Tin" sees Dan incorporating the same rising, crisp euphoria you find in his Caribou work as synths flutter over a chugging late 90s style house beat while "Xing Tian" shuffles and twists with a little more fuzz and unpredictability. Classic Daphni.

Review: Apparently eight years in the making, "Costellazione K78" is the collaborative effort of Discodromo and Massimiliano Pagliara. It's a truly cosmic affair that channels a generous amount of warm, 70s sound into its component parts as it sets a course for the stars. The A-side houses the original throbbing epic in its pure form, restrained in parts but with a bold narrative arc that reaches further out with every passing bar. Meanwhile on the flip you can feast your ears on the more boldly defined dub version, which amps up the FX and synth vamps for a truly interstellar space trip.

Review: Breakthrough release for Durerstuben here, as the Berlin based pair of David Hofmann and Till Gerloff make good on the promise shown via a stream of intermittent 12"s in the past few years with a debut on Koze's Pampa label. One listen to the three tracks on Street of Rane will likely have many checking Discogs for the availability of Hoffmann and Gerloff's previous work as Durerstuben; such is the instantly gratifying nature of their rich, vivid take on European deep house. Metro Area, Zapp and Tensnake are offered as potential reference points by the Pampa press release machine and it's hard to disagree with final track "Freiherr in der Wall" a particular speaker box laden delight.

Review: Dinky-Di is a modern disco ensemble conducted by Waq Takahashi with just a few key releases spread out across the past 15 years. Now Million Dollar Disco main man Al Kent has cherry picked one of the hottest jams from their oeuvre and given it a special rub down - the kind of treatment that warrants a single-sided 12" no less. In Al's hands, 2005 track "Gold Wave" becomes a sizzling party monster that romps along for more than 10 minutes. With scintillating peaks, heavyweight drum breakdowns and sumptuous musicianship throughout, this is how an epic disco bomb should sound in 2019.

Review: The latest transmission from the Lumberjacks stable taps up London-based producer Alan Dixon, who tackles a soul-stirring gospel belter from Frank Booker on the A side. Whatever your spiritual persuasion, "Rise & Shine" can't help but inject a little joy into your life. On the flip, Dixon turns the piano house power up to 11 with the life-affirming thrust of "Whatcha Gonna Do", featuring Maleke O'Ney on vocal duties. Completing the set, Lumberjacks head honcho Marcel Vogel drops in a remix that twists the original into a loose and limber jazz-funk-house odyssey of epic proportions.

"Playin' With Fire" rides a funky disco groove and works around some seriously catchy vocals, while Daniel Maunick dubs the track out and rides the filter to deadly effect. "Shining" rounds the EP off with a sweet, sensitive jam that strikes the kind of melancholic tone that wistful dancefloor memories are made of. Once again the vocals lift to the track to another stratosphere of heartfelt expression - this is sure to go down a storm with the late summer crowd.

Review: Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk is still going strong. The Stockholm label now taps In-Beat-Ween Music main man Alexander Lay Far, who appeared last year on the label with his Communication EP. The Slope sees him collaborate with the legendary Ashley Beedle of X-Press 2 and Darren Morris. First up is "Doctor Feelgood" with its '70s inspired production complete with funk guitar, swinging live drumming and an infectiously funky synth bass. The Slope" is a more downbeat affair for chill out moments, a deep soul funk number with swirling Rhodes, dreamy xylophones and rich analogue strings drawing comparisons to Roy Ayers RAMP project. "Lay Far's Upbeat Version" does exactly what it does on the cover, injecting a funky breakbeat into said track, making it more dancefloor friendly but still retaining all its soulful glory.

Review: Les Disques De La Mort regular DJ Oil has hardly been prolific over the last few years, which makes his decision to release two EPs almost simultaneously rather an odd one. We're not complaining of course, because Telephunk - the second of the pair - is amongst his best work to date. The title track, which stretches out across the A-side, is particularly good, with Oil contrasting rubbery, boogie style bass and pulsating, Italo-disco style Arpeggio lines with creepy horror synths and foreboding electronics. Turn to the flip for more arpeggio-heavy action in the shape of the druggy and intoxicated "Paresse", before Oil indulges his downtempo roots via the rolling instrumental trip-hop of "Fall".

Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

Review: Dr Love is a veteran tastemaker and vinyl junkie on the Montreal scene, while Laura Ingalls is a wandering French person of no specific sex that has recently landed in the French Canadian city. They both bonded over their love of anything disco and poutine: the main local dish which consists of potato, cheese curds and gravy. Dr Love likes to dig, but doesn't really produce while Laura Ingalls is not the most efficient digger and only seems to unearth old Folk and obscure Arabic music for their personal collection - but has serious production skills. On "Oh Mon Amour" they sample a very hard to find classic from the famous Parisian disco Le Palace in the early 80's: when it was released while "Weekend Mouille" is an odd jazz disco thing from the mid 70's. On the flip, "Soul Ma Coco" is said to be a cover of a certain Manu Dibango track. This version kept the melody and changed the lyrics slightly.
