Mam Tola
Cat: PH 45032. Rel: 26 Oct 23
Florence Adooni & Erobique - "Mam Tola" (2:57)
Erobique - "Bach In Afrika" (4:22)
Review: Florence Adooni has been called Ghana's Frafra gospel queen in the past, and with good reason. First single 'Mam Pe'ela Su'ure' arrived in 2021 to widespread acclaim, and she followed up on Philophon with 'Yinne' late last year. Now Adooni is back on the label for a collaboration with German artist Erobique, who is normally found making quirky synth disco cuts. On a visit to Max Weissenfeldt's studio in Ghana, he crossed paths with Adooni and so the lilting, sweetly sentimental 'Mam Tola' was created. The B-side of this single finds Erobique flying solo for 'Bach In Afrika', riding a swift beat from Kung Fu Andoh and flexing on the Hammond organ for an uptempo fusion which might well catch you off guard and make you dance all the same.

Spacer Woman From Mars
Cat: LOEB 007. Rel: 11 Mar 08
Johan Agebjorn/Sally Shapiro - "Spacer Woman From Mars"
Johan Agebjorn/Sally Shapiro/Rude 66 - "Deeper Space Woman"
Johan Agebjorn/Sally Shapiro/Elitechnique - "Outer Space Woman" (parts 1 & 2)
Johan Agebjorn - "Mega Man II"
Review: Taken from the recent, highly acclaimed 'Milky Disco' compilation on Lo Recordings, 'Spacer Woman' is a scintillating slab of hi-octane,
Italo space-disco. Created by Johan Agebjörn, who was responsible for all the production on Sally Shapiro's 'Disco Romance' album, the
12" includes remixes by Rude 66 and Elitechnique which take it even deeper into space and onto nu-disco dancefloors. Dutch electro
artist Rude 66, with releases on labels like Viewlexx, Bunker and Crème Organization, previously remixed Sally's hit 'I'll Be By Your Side',
receiving plenty of club play from DJs like The Hacker and Tiga. His take on this 12", titled 'Deeper Space Woman', is a slow and deep,
dubby trip which will work well as a start-up for slower DJ sets. Dutch duo Elitechnique, with releases on Clone and Radius and earlier
remixes for Black Devil Disco Club and Alden Tyrell, take the track into a nu-disco dancefloor monster called 'Outer Space Woman' with
additional backing vocals by the Dutch actress Loes. The 12" ends with a wicked sidechain dance version of a computer game track,
'Mega Man II re-mix' by Johan Agebjörn, here without Sally's vocals but with vintage 8bit sounds. Sally Shapiro's debut album 'Disco
Romance' was released in 2007 and received excellent reviews from magazines like Pitchfork Media, Vice, Der Spiegel and XLR8R. It
was recently nominated as 'electronic/dance album of the year' by U.S. Plug Awards and Sally was nominated as 'female artist of the year'.
'Spacer Woman From Mars' was originally intended for 'Disco Romance', but was taken out because of its space rather than love theme.

Arsenii - "Miss Holy Holy"
Shiny Boots - "Susekke"
Emotional Blackmail - "Bottox"
Simple Symmetry - "Danza Sueno"
Review: A brand new imprint from Russia's ever-evolving disco scene. Dipping its fingers into psychedelic, Balearic and boogie pies, it's a superbly curated cut quartet. Let's take a slice... Arsenii's "Miss Holy Holy" is straight out of the late 60s west coast movement. All dreamy and hippy, fans of Paqua will be all over it. Shiny Boots gets sandy feet on the shore of Playa Den Bossa with the synth-tingle Balearic blisser "Susekke" while Emotional Blackmail gets crunk on the dramatic rhythmic textures of the funk-fuelled "Bottox". Simple Symmetry closes the curtains on this consummate launch release with the bold 80s production motifs and big Brazilian hooks of "Danza Sueno". If this doesn't steal your attention, nothing will!

Bantu Clan vs Sarabi - "Africa Ni Leo" (extended mix) (7:46)
Bantu Clan vs Sarabi - "Africa Ni Leo" (Behr remix) (5:59)
Review: After pit stops in Cuba and Kenya, Auntie Flo and Esa's Highlife World Series lands in Uganda for its closing edition. Recorded over various stints at the East Africa music conference DoaDoa in Jinja in the past year, these four tracks find our intrepid pair of travelling fusionists working with musicians from Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa. First up is "DoaDoa14" by Christopher and Swahili Alley, named in honour of its genesis at that year's conference and a fine journey through spiritual African house music. Next up Esa shows off his prowess at extended dancefloor burners with a superb twisting remix of Santuri's "Min Kula" whilst the B side features Bantu Clan Vs Sarabi's "Africa Ni Leo" in both extended and remixed by Behr form. A fine end to a consistently enlightening series.

Auntie Flo - "Die Bailando" (feat Eric Alejendro)
Esa - "Sabela De Cuba" (Afro Synth mix)
Review: Early in 2014, Highlife regulars Auntie Flo and Esa traveled to Cuba to play at the country's biggest music festival. While there, they hooked up with a string of local vocalists and musicians to lay down the first installment of Highlife's World Series. Predictably, it's something of a triumph, with both artists gleefully joining the dots between Afro-influenced drum machine rhythms, traditional Cuban instrumentation and the kind of skewed synths that are such a feature of their work. Auntie Flo's effort is a 13-minute epic featuring the rambling vocals of Eric Eleindro and some snaking trumpet action. It's Esa who steals the show, though, with a dreamy, Balearic-minded cut that sounds like a contemporary update of Hugh Masekela's mid 1980s work.

Beard In Dust - "At The Dawn"
Tales Of Voodoo - "Sharky"
Esen Gunduz - "Deve Gucu"
Review: When it comes to exotic, off-kilter edits, you'll struggle to find a stronger series than Jonny Rock's Disco Hamam. This fifth volume is every bit as essential as its predecessors. Beards In Dust claims the A-side with "At The Dawn", a tidy revision of a druggy and "chuggy" version of a blue-eyed psychedelic funk-rock roller that comes complete with some serious sing-along sections. The heady world of Turkish music - a constant source of inspiration at the Disco Hamam HQ - comes to the fore on the B-side. Tales Of Voodoo's "Sharky" is a deliciously percussive, dancefloor-friendly fusion of Middle Eastern exoticism, funk-rock guitars and heavy disco percussion, while Esen Gunduz's "Deve Gucu" is an even sweatier, Italo Disco-era stomper that sounds like something you'd have heard in Istanbul clubs circa 1985.

Bits & Pieces - "Don't Stop The Music"
The Staple Singers - "Slippery People"
Eric's Friends - "Discocaine"
Brian Briggs - "AEO" (parts 1 & 2)
Review: Having released quality disco music since 2006, the Balerica imprint continues to dig deep to give its listeners more unearthed jams on Balearica 8. Bits & Pieces' "Don't Stop The music" opens with fat, synthesisers acting as the basis for this funk-laden freakout. "Slippery People" by The Staple Singers moves you with sharp pads, a shoulder-twitching beat and soulful vocal licks. Eric's Friends' "Discocaine" gives us a more traditional disco flavour, borrowing the lead line from Muddy Water's "Smoke on The Water" and laying it on top of a moving beat. Brian Briggs' "AEO" (parts 1 & 2) closes the record with an ocean-dipped jam, soaked in oriental flavour and served in an African wonderland. Highly recommended.

Deep Is The Breath (Permanent Vaction mix)
Deep Is The Breath (Pillow Talk remix feat Tone Of Arc)
Deep Is The Breath (Hannulelauri Male remix)
Review: There's already been some killer remix fanfare to support the release of Fool, the fourth studio LP from Kasper Bjorke, with the likes of Axel Boman, Rebolledo and Till Von Sein adding their own production nuances to "Lose Yourself To Jenny" the master Dane's collaboration with White Horse vocalist Jacob Bellens. "Deep Is The Breath" is another album track that features Bellens, and gets tweaked by Permanent Vacation, Pillow Talk and Hannulelauri with excellent results. Benjamin Frohlich and Tom Bioly are more highly regarded for overseeing the Permanent Vacation label as opposed to their own production prowess, which is a shame because their effort is a highlight here, expertly building into a twisting mid 120 acid number with far too much ease.

Maurice McGee - "Styx" (DJ Rocca 808 edit) (6:24)
Orlando Johnson - "Turn The Music On" (Re Tide remix) (6:53)
Review: More from re-launched Italo-disco era label Full Time Records, who here present four fresh reworks of tracks from the vaults. G.A.M.M-signed scalpel hero Moplen steps up first to deliver a fine dubbed-out re-edit of Boeing's slap bass-propelled electrofunk classic "Dance To The Beat", before Massimo Beradi adds a little subtle, mid-tempo house flavour to Electric Mind's lesser-celebrated 1982 Italo-disco jam "Summing Up". DJ Rocca opens side B in some style, hammering away at a TR-808 drum machine while giving Maurice McGee's 1984 cut "Styx" an altogether deeper vibe. Meanwhile, Re-Tide turn Orlando Johnson's Paradise Garage favourite "Turn The Music On" into a muscular chunk of bass-propelled boogie-house badness.

Review: Funkyjaws Music is back with more music to make your jaw go funky, this time in the form of a second volume of its Let's Dance series. It features a quartet of esteemed tune makers starting with Frank Booker's 'Yes No Maybe' which is a horn laced and loose-limbed delight, while go-slow master Eddie C brings his classy touch to the funky licks of 'Love Dancing Theme.' The first of them sees the pumping and hypnotic "Stjernekrigen" from Jarle Brathen, the more funk-infused sounds of Casiokids' "Den Lange Veien Hjen", the pensive analogue sounds of Erik Skantze's "Stargaze" and Markus Varied's "No Vil Eg Bort Og Gifta Meg Og Rydja Meg Ein Gard", which creates a disco odyssey filled with jazz rhythms worthy of its tongue-twister of a name.

Eli Escobar - "Lovely Feelin" (part II - beats)
Review: The musical branch of the Mercer Hotel Empire expands beyond the basement club SubMercer with the launch of this affiliated record label. Much like the (literally) underground club and its booking policy, the standard of music here is rich and refined and sees two regulars take the reins for the inaugural release. Runaway's Marcus Cabral continues to remind us of the duo's potency for proper house music. Utilising the vocal talents of Lindsay Mound, as well the mixing skills of John Selway, Cabral's "It's On You" is dream like, sensual house music at its finest. Occupying the flip, Eli Escobar follows a recent dashing outing for Wurst with "Lovely Feeling" an excellent rasping vocal house number which sees Lindsey Caldwell's vocals emerge from the depths and latch onto a classic rhythmic house refrain with aplomb. All in all the type of classy release you would expect from all involved.

As with previous drops there's a great sense of silky sonic consistency throughout that allays any fears you may have regarding various artist releases. From the cinematic late 70s illustriousness of Criss Cassara's "La Vela" to the deep heavy nodding Raha-fronted emotion session "Closer" via the sand-in-toes, fuzzy guitar-plucking title track, Pole Jam move forever closer to that all important 'essential label' status. Review: Private Stock Records is slowly but surely building up a golden catalogue of funk magic. This fourth EP is another high-class double dose that opens with Cutso's 'Fallen Love (Woo Woo)', a swirling slow burner of a tune with heavy, languid drums and twisted vocal samples that eventually coalesce into a warming party vibe. Dane - "I Want More" (7:34)
Eddie C - "One For Dane" (4:13)
Review: Canada's foremost re-edit imprint continues to churn out the hits, largely by delivering dub disco and Balearic-tinged interpretations of long forgotten or little-known cuts. Common Edit regulars Dane and Khotin join forces on the A-side, delivering a sweet chunk of boogie-era synthesizer reggae ("Imho"), before heading futher towards peaktime territory with the low-slung, late night AOR disco of "System". Eddie C digs delves into his seemingly bottomless crates of obscurities for inspiration on "I Want More", a gorgeous chunk of piano-laden Balearic disco sweetness. Finally, Dane lights up something medicinal, closes his eyes and delivers the smacked-out, guitar-laden ambient chug of "One For Dane". It's an absolute beauty, if truth be told.

Review: The RDY series rolls on it its 28th edition, presenting three more edits that may or may not have been tweaked, reworked and expanded on by the great Ron Hardy during his time behind the decks at Chicago's legendary Muzic Box. First up is Tullio De Piscopo's classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)" which has been edited in recent times by both Theo Parrish and Volcov; the original is a fine track which will delight any dancefloor, but then so will this edit. Review: Can DeGiorgio kick some shit or what?? 'Starwaves' is so the electro house sound of now coupled with an authentic 1980s electro vibe that not many besides Kirk could properly pull off. Fans of New Order in particular will love the sequenced basslines and rolling synth arpeggiations used throughout, slaved to a tough 4/4 groove. The breakdown features a wicked voicebox riff ala Cameo's Roger Troutman- brilliant!! The remixes start with Jimpster's string-driven Moroder inspired reworking for the Francisco/Marco Passarani fans out there while Spirit Catcher delivers for the more traditional deeper house heads with a crisp soulful revamp adding some choice vocal bits and a crisp, slinky groove.

Review: "Understood by few; mysterious or secret." is the dictionary definition of arcane. The term is also the name for the new label venture from Edg4r, a key member of the boogie and disco loving Miami Players Club crew. The debut 12" comes from Diamond Jackson, aka Superior Elevation boss man Tom Noble and Edg4r in producer and executive producer role respectively, and features a trio of fuzzed out, disco-boogie-house crossovers. If you've been a fan of Noble's work to date, you will definitely be seduced by these three cuts which all feel redolent of a byegone era but benefit from contemporary production methods - the bassline on "Maybe So" is particularly heavy! A fine start for the Arcane crew!

Review: Iconic French producer Dimitri From Paris takes a break from his international globe trotting endeavours for Hand Of God to introduce Erodiscoteque - a new endeavour with DJ Rocca which marks Dimitri's first excursion for Gomma! "I Love New York" is naturally the duo's paean to everyone's favourite city, specifically the late 80's, early 90s era of freestyle and raw house. The title track is undeniably of this era, with a heavy midtempo MPC beat augmented by plenty of horn vibes and late nite piano stabs - watch out for that breakdown! "Beatdown" brings the electro boogie heat, all squelchy bass, post disco key squiggles and choppy beats. The real gem is reserved for the B Side with Italo disco deity Fred Ventura enlisted to add some vintage vocals to the electro synth odyssey that is "I Need A Reason" which is dipped in an authentic 80s quality that few these days can match.

Spanish nu-disco label Rare Wiri is a rare thing indeed. Not only has it been putting out classy disco sounds for 12 years, but it now hits that hugely rare and noteworthy landmark of 100 releases. A suitably big cast of names appears on this celebratory EP with DJ Rocca twisting melons on his proudly analogue mid tempo disco groover 'Mausy.' Eric Duncan manages to sound both Balearic and edgy with his 'Suan Wu,' a darkened tuned with arching guitar riffs and twinkling keys.
Mushrooms Project keeps it deep and weird and Rayko closes out with a nice speed out stepper that reaches for the future.

As with previous editions of Biomix, the four cuts here adopt a full fat fromage approach to the humble disco edit and act as perfect DJ tools for the budding Discotheque DJs out there. The A Side has Steef and Ed Hit collaborating on two tracks; lead cut "Let's Flunck" is straight out of the French looped disco house manual and contrasts nicely with the slower sensual Italo bump of "Ca Sonne". Flip over and the Marseille based Steef goes solo on two reworkings of French discotheque classics with the heavy disco dub of "Cargo Cul" perhaps our favourite track of the EP.

Dr Packer - "Instant Groove" (5:57)
Evil Smarty - "4 Love" (7:25)
Fingerman - "Boogie Change Up" (7:24)
P Sol - "Let It Go" (5:54)
Review: For their second 12", recently launched edits imprint Wall of Fame has assembled a crack team of internationally renowned edit fiends. Australian Dr Packer delivers a bustling house interpretation of Instant Funk's synth-laden Paradise Garage five "Just Because You're Mine", before Evil Smarty gives Tata Vega's brilliant disco classic "Get It Up For Love" a similarly house-friendly renovation. Flip for Fingerman's looser, party-starting "Boogie Change Up" - all dubbed-out horns, sparkling synths, sweet vocals and extended drum breaks - and "Let It Go", a curious but rather impressive R&B cut-job from Brooklun-based P-Sol. All four tracks sound like tried-and-tested killers for those who prefer their disco on the housier end of the spectrum.

Fool 4 U (3:46)
Review: The dazzling Star Creature label has an impossibly feel good future retro disco-funk gem on its hands here courtesy of E Da Boss. E has been turning out killer jams for many years and this time joins forces with Ishtar for 'Fool 4U'. It has funky-ass bass slaps down low, with plenty of jazzy and cosmic keys up top and boogie grooves that make you move. The vocal is acrobatic and brings sultry soul on the E live remix. On the flip the original is a little more upright with 80s chord vamps, noodling guitar licks and the vocal still bring the soul. Two gorgeous cuts for cosy dancefloor vibes.

Review: When it comes to authentically colourful, synthesizer-heavy revivalist electrofunk, few have a better track record than either E. Live or Star Creature, a label whose releases sound like long lost relics of the 1980s. For this reason you'd expect "Boogie For Life" to be superb... and it is. Those with an expansive knowledge of boogie will hear nods towards all sorts of original era artists and tracks throughout the mini-album's original compositions, from Fonda Rae ("Boogie For Life") and Herbie Hancock (the effortlessly brilliant "Sunny Side Up"), to D-Train (the jazz guitar-laden excellence of "Rollin' Steady") and Zapp/Roger Troutman ("Case Of The Shakes"). In a word: stunning.

I Don't Know What This Is
Review: Within the space of two perfectly executed 12" singles, Mark E's sneaky E Versions series - in which he returns to the world of loopy, house-friendly disco and Balearic re-edits with which he first made his name - has become a "must check". This third installment is every bit as essential as its' predecessors, offering to two deliciously glassy-eyed re-interpretations of unknown gems. Opener "The Shoe" delivers an undulating, loose-but-hypnotic chunk of head-nodding, hip-shaking disco, with rising and falling strings and horn stabs riding a tasty, bass-heavy groove. "I Don't Know What This Is" flips the script, offering up a dreamy, sensual and enorphin-heavy slice of floor-friendly Balearic bliss. Recommended.

Magazine
Xam
Review: Earlier this year, Mark E returned to the re-edit scene in which he made his name with the first E Versions 12". For those who remember his brilliant early work on Jisco Music and Golf Channel - all hypnotic disco loops and slow-house attitude - it was something of a surprise treat. Here he delivers more clandestine reworks in a similar vein, delivering two deliciously hypnotic, drawn-out grooves that transform familiar favourites into wide-eyed Balearic chuggers. "Magazine" is particularly potent since it slows down and smacks out Madonna's "Vogue", in the process turning the track into a creeping endorphin blast of epic proportions. "Xam" ups the tempo slightly, building the action around baggy accordion samples and rising and falling melodies.

Horn Jam (9:01)
Sanctified (7:37)
Review: It's guessing time once again as Mark E returns with a fifth edition of his E Versions series packing two long form productions that have been expertly tweaked and EQed for perfect dancefloor deployment. So far in the series, the Midlands edit master has dropped the occasional version that's easy to ID (the magnificent take on Madonna that was "Magazine") but for the most part E Versions has left the ID crew scratching their heads and the rest of us dancing. Both "Horn Jam" and "Sanctified" maintain this strong tradition with the B-side a particularly satisfying soul-drenched house stomper. Just wait for the vocal to come sliding in!

Plastic People (9:04)
Review: Yes, it's time for another slice of Mark E(dit) goodness on his own E Versions label, and every time one of these bad boys has always been on point. Number 6 in the series certainly doesn't disappoint, and the soulful waves of "Scared" are so close in line with the sort of house we're digging at the moment, that we've been playing it for hours on the Juno HQ turntable. "Plastic People", surely an ode to the legendary London club, takes house as a structure, but goes much deeper and wilder thanks to elements of jazz, funk and deep, sweltering soul music. Mark E never ceases to please and amaze simultaneously.

Sitting Here Alone
Child Star
Review: It's interesting that Mark E's acclaimed E Versions series - in which he returns to his roots by delivering long, loopy, tactile, house-friendly re-edits of Balearic and disco gems - seems to have given the Birmingham born producer a new lease of life. Certainly, the first three volumes contained some of his best material for years. This fourth installment is equally as essential. A-side "Sitting Here Alone" is a perfect example of Evetts' deliciously E'd-up, stretched-out style, turning a sweet and baggy deep disco cut into a wonderfully immersive deep house/disco hybrid. Flip to the B for "Childstar", a pulsating disco bumper that sounds like an anthem in waiting.

Review: E by gum these are good... Veteran editor and groove doyen Mark E returns to his Merc controls, having previously passed the keys to fellow soul marksman MK VII earlier this year. As always, it's a lengthy, hypnotic affair on both sides. "Train Tunnel" loops and overlaps over itself with woozy jazz horns that gradually build in prominence and overwhelming strength while "Give It Time" swoons away on a palette of sweet vocal harmonies and subtle disco string work. The E stands for excellent.

Mingo (10:25)
Review: E Versions is a brand new edit-focused offshoot of Merc, seemingly allowing label boss Mark E an outlet for some of his unreleased reworks. Given the title, the spotters out there might easily guess what the source material for "Kahn" is, and it immediately calls to mind all those great reworks the Midlands-based producer did for Jiscomusic, Running Back and Golf Channel in the pre-disco edit flood era. It's complemented by the B-Side track "Mingo" which is much more indicative of the brand of hypnotic machine music Mark E is currently specialising in, and will appeal to fans of drums!!!

Review: Coming from the Constant Black family but distinctly committed to the evergreen sound of disco, Cardiology is a label committed to club music with heart and soul. First up on this label is Earl, who wastes no time in setting the mood with "The Fantasy", a tastefully funked up house joint with French Touch leanings. "No You Don't" brings the disco to the fore even more, but not at the expense of hard-pumping beats and a killer diva lick or two. "No Speed Limit" is tough and pounding, which makes the sliced up samples dig in all the deeper - you could totally imagine DJ Bone juggling this one to death. "Strictly Real" takes things even further with a spaced out breakbeat speckled bumper lavished with gorgeous string shots - a curious blend that works like a dream.

Coming To You Live (7" version) (3:56)
Street Themes (4:28)
Review: First released way back in 1980 on the album of the same name, 'Coming To You Live' is one of the most beloved dancefloor jams in the sprawling catalogue of sorely missed soul-jazz organist Charles Earland. Here reissued on seven-inch (and therefore presented in edited form), the track blurs the boundaries between Latin-tinged disco and jazz-funk - all heady female group vocals, heady horns, spacey Herbie Hancock synths and infectious grooves. Over on the flip you'll find original B-side 'Street Themes', a breezier, similarly Latin-tinged jazz-funk cut that features some sensational keys-playing from Earland. In a word: essential.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Understood to be the work of Earl Jeffers, this fresh slice of white label edit goodness comes with four chopped up jams honed for ultimate dancefloor impact. First up is "Thank You", which takes a tough house backdrop and throws some fiery soul down on top of it in a manner you could imagine Moodymann dropping with satisfaction. "Badadu" meanwhile heads into a more delirious headspace, the sampling meeting with fierce showers of synth FX and a generally raucous arrangement. There are no prizes for guessing what "D-D-D" samples, but it does so with all the fireworks you would want from a house re-rub of such a classic. "The Paper" makes for a fine finishing move with its choppy vocal slices and swooning strings.

'Thank You' is a thumpin' disco house monster that's looped to perfection, and its vocal is just epic throughout. Review: Earlybird Soul System comprises Charli James (whose vocals have graced cuts from the likes of Red Rackem, Kid Sublime and Freekwency) and Inkswel (whose beats have blessed imprints such as Rush Hour, Hot Shot, and Boogiebash). The result of this partnership is a solid sound that smoulders with naked arrangement dynamics and a dreamy disco soul that instantly captures the imagination. Highlights include the densely layered vocal textures and loose drum swagger of "Flashing Lights", the block-party free-for-all "Superior Fonk" and the dubbier, chuggier "Insense". And that's before we even get to the remixes. Each one adding a new chapter to this great new modern soul partnership

Review: Danny Krivit's officially sanctioned re-edits of Earth Wind & Fire's "Brazilian Rhyme" and "Runnin" have been sought-after since they first appeared on a Japan-only 12" back in 2004. In fact, such is demand that even later bootleg pressings now go for silly money online. As this reissue proves, though, they're arguably amongst Krivit's strongest scalpel works. Certainly, his three-minute revision of the always too short "Brazilian Rhyme" teases it out to just the right length, in the process delivering a sweltering, sing-along summer anthem. The flipside revision of the equally as summery "Runnin" is every bit as good, with Krivit making merry with the original's life-affirming scat vocals and killer piano solos.

Previously only 80 seconds long, Fryer has managed to unearth a previously unreleased extended version that really digs into those honeyed harmonies. "My Love" takes us four years forward to their 13th album Raise! where the musical emphasis has developed from all-out vocal soul to a more restrained rare groove feel. Digging deep into both afrofunk and Italo roots, there's a universal musical language that grabs you physically across all three cuts. "Mr Mystery" sits between Booker T & The Mgs and Daniele Baldelli while "Route Ten To Interzone" is an energetic township jam with added synth sheen. Review: Athens Of The North get themselves in party mode with a fourth EP from East Coast Love Affair. There is some series fun to be had in these tracks, with side one. 'Confrontations,' being a rebuild of a rare disco funk 45 by Homegrown Syndrome. On the backside is 'Shake' which goes deeper but still has plenty of dance floor appear. It has tropical perc and whirring electronics that just scream 'dance' while the actual screaming vocal reminds of Moby classic 'Go!' These are hefty tunes, rare as you like, but immediately accessible and high impact.

Review: Having previously re-invented Eddie Kendricks' 'Date With The Rain' as a luscious lover's rock epic, Athens of the North house band East Coast Love Affair has now turned its attention to another 1970s classic: Roy Ayers' 'Chicago'. In an act of genuine musical genius, they've re-imagined the track as a TB-303 and TR-909-driven chunk of acid house/deep house fusion, effectively updating Ayers' celebration of the Windy City while paying tribute in their own unique way. It's great, as is flipside 'Back on You (featuring Crystal Winds)', a dreamy, immersive and slowly building chunk of sunrise-ready, bongo-sporting musical deepness that's as sun-kissed and emotion-stirring as they come.
