Aashton - "Pride" (6:13)
Peza - "Black Gold" (6:23)
Fabiolous Barker - "The Paradise" (6:37)
Rayko - "The Jam" (5:55)
Review: Yam Who?'s Midnight Riot is back with another volume of funky, party starting edits, so come and get your fix. Aashton's "Pride" samples the diva vocals of you know who on this smooth and soulful number. Peza's "Black Gold" is pure classic disco, reminiscent of Salsoul, possibly? Fabiolous Barker's "The Paradise" has that retro and Balearic vibe that fans of labels like Love On The Rocks and Efficient Space will certainly dig. "The Jam" by Rayko is a re-edit of you guessed it: Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam".

Alphonse - "Survival" (part 1)
Fx Mchn - "Jackie"
Jamie Blanco - "I Think She Thinks"
Facade - "Revelations"
Review: The newly established London Housing Trust label inaugurate proceedings with a various artists 12" featuring contributions from Cynic artist Jamie Blanco alongside the previously unheralded Alphonse, Fx Mchn and Facade. It's unclear who the latter are but inside info suggests it's three well known artists operating incognito, but don't let this wilful obscurism put you off as each track here is optimum analogue house at its finest. The Fx Mchn contribution "Jackie" is particularly beguiling, touching on jagged punk funk as much as late 80s house with echo laden vocals smudged deep beneath a delightfully rubbery bass line and buccaneering, malfunctioning drums for six minutes. A promising debut from the label!

Breakthrough (original 12" mix)
Breakthrough (DJ Kaos 12" remix)
Review: Released back in 2010 the Backwoods LP was a long term fixture in the sets of Tim Sweeney Rub N Tug et al, yet never really got the wider appreciation it deserved, despite the project being overseen by Japanese DJ supreme Kento Sasaki aka DJ Kent aka Force Of Nature. One of the album's many highlights "Breakthrough" gets a much warranted new 12" issue courtesy of the ever dependable Jolly Jams outlet and comes with the added bonus of a remix from label boss DJ Kaos. Live drumming, twinkling instrumentation and a true mastery of the groove are what sets this track apart from the pretenders, whilst the Kaos effort successfully implements a housier feel without sacrificing the heart stopping brilliance of Sasaki's original.

Rusty (4:02)
Start The Engine (5:15)
Irradia (4:07)
Slightly Mad (4:31)
Review: In recent years, Daniel Baldelli's original productions have tended towards the funkier end of the cosmic disco spectrum. That's certainly what you get here, as the Afro-cosmic pioneer once again joins forces with regular studio partner Marco Dionigi. Of course, there are nod to the chugging, arpeggio-heavy world of Italo-disco - see the Balearic disco dreaminess of "Irradia" and cosmic funk-rock shuffle of "Slightly Mad" - but even these mind-altering journeys come blessed with crackling funk guitars and tasty Clavinet sounds. Our picks are opener "Rusty", a bassline-driven, funk-fuelled Idjut Boys style dub disco number, and the pleasingly percussive, flash-fried funk of "Start The Engine".

Young Pulse & Fleur De Mur - "Smooth Sweet Talker" (6:53)
Review: Get yourself geared up for festival season with some fierce party starters certified with the Glitterbox stamp. Melvo Baptiste leads the charge with 'Sweat', a sizzling disco house stomper with Dames Brown giving the biggest diva energy on her show-stopping vocal. Lovebirds bring unbridled joy on the Philly string swoon and slinky b-line funk of 'Burn It Down', while Art Of Tones & Inaya Day keep it peak time on the sassy strutter 'Give My Love'. Young Pulse & Fleur De Mur complete the set with 'Smooth Sweet Talker', another bright and bold vocal cut par excellence.

Bendy & Hristo - "Love Contest" (Bendy & Hristo edit)
Free Association - "Tablets Of Love" (Free Association version)
Review: Friendly Monster is a new label that's so far only released the one record, a three-track various artist 12". They've done the same for their second offering, only giving Bendy & Hristo and Free Association a side of real estate each. Combine elements of New York disco with new wave, no wave, minimal wave, whatever wave, and Bendy & Hristo's own edit to their track "Love Contest" has all the makings of a swooning floor filler. Meanwhile the B-side has more of an Arthur Russell element to it, with flashes of Queen, indie rock, rock and cosmic disco mixed in. Two tough and sensual cuts on the one record.

Black Hole (7:21)
Black Hole (club mix) (7:20)
Review: Some new Italian space disco here from two right veterans of the scene. Beppe Loda of Typhoon Club fame with the lesser known (but equally revered) Francesco Bomardo (Hypnotik/M.C. Claude). 'Black Hole' is their new release, said to be comprised of some tracks from late '80s promos. Here they honor the 'Space' genre of the '70s on the cosmo-psychedelic journey that is the original mix, followed by a more groovy and upbeat club version on the flip. This is not the first time these two legends of the Brescian scene have collaborated, those of you who are interested should check out their previous work as Egotroya.

Thitchinaski (Bob Bernard edit)
Monsieur Le Chevre De Gare (Fab Mayday edit)
Breakin' Down The Walls (Bernadott edit)
Meteo Sex (Bikini Freak edit)
Review: Kicking off 2013 with some serious 'strange', Bob Bernard's Parisian edit house is well and truly open for business. And they're playing their most obscure game; we'll give serious high fives to anyone who can recognise the originals that have been tweaked here. Ranging from Hungarian-originated Vangelis flavoured psychedelia ("Thitchinaski") to oddball electro boogie shaken with a dark, sad robot twist ("Meteo Sex"). Strange but wholly satisfying; Macadam Mambo are in a league of their own.

Silicodisco - "Mirror Constellation" (6:30)
Review: Long-serving French label Skylax has inaugurated 'Serie Noire', a new sub-label dedicated to delivering a mix of 'dark disco', indie-dance and Italo-disco flavours. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on the series' debut release, a multi-artist affair that's packed to the rafters with high-grade material. David Body steps up first with the crystalline melodies and throbbing high-energy grooves of 'Free Gluten', before Facets throw down the muscular and moody 'Waves' and Neurotiker doffs a cap to EBM and Kraftwerk on 'BDSM (Vocoder Version)'. Over on side B, Signal Street's Bobby Orlando-on-steroids style 'Tiger' is followed by the throbbing joy of Silicodisco's Italo-disco-inspired 'Mirror Constellation'.

Passione Italiana (6:39)
Caffeine Is My Passion (5:54)
Review: BPlan & Fab_o made a fine debut on their own Caffee Ciorretto Edits label and now they follow it up with another glistening four tracker. 'Santos' is the bright and breezy opener with a rubbery grove and retro-future chords, then 'Your Coffee' sinks into a more freewheeling, languid groove tinged with Afro exoticism and a steamy vocal. The timeless throwback vibes continue on 'Passione Italiana', another sensuous disco stomper that brings some old school cool, and lastly 'Caffeine Is My Passion' is a funky workout with big hits and cosmic arps racing through the stars.

Sweet Brasil (5:41)
Aroma Club (6:44)
Arabica Selection (6:46)
West Africa (6:32)
Review: A new week, a new edits label, this time from BPlan & Fab_o. It kicks off in fantastic fashion with four edits that will boost your spot no end. There is loose and jumbled afro-disco on "Sweet Brasil" and then stripped back disco-house loops a la early DJ Sneak on "Aroma Club". The flip side again leans on afro for its sunny vibes with "Arabica Selection" and it might be that the best is saved until last. "West Africa" is built on funky bass riffs, with flailing percussion, chunky drums and vocal chants that will lock in any crowd.

Afro Disco (6:54)
Chicco Reale (6:16)
Midnight Espresso (6:11)
Review: BPlan & Fab_o return to their own imprint with a new record that is packed with heat. This latest chapter is another vibrant one with two dance floor jams on the a-side. 'Afro Disco' does exactly what it says on the tin with funky to spare and lovely compelling rhythms topped by a great vocal. 'Discoffee' is then a horn laced disco cut with pumping drum work and big vocals. 'Chicco Reale' is more smooth and seductive but just a ready for the club and 'Midnight Espresso' then cuts loose on more richly musical disco grooves.

Joutro Mundo - "Vem Obata" (5:34)
Review: The latest drop of 'coffee shots' from Italian imprint Caffe Cornetto is another impressive affair showcasing re-edits and reworks by a quintet of artists. Label regulars BPlan and Fab-O join forces on opener 'Miscela Segrata', a lightly beefed-up and subtly quantized tweak of a heavyweight disco-funk jam, before rising star Reece Johnson slaps down 'Groove Espresso', a percussion-rich, all-action take on what sounds like a West African Afro-disco smasher from the mid-to-late 1970s. Over on side B, Shamarko offers-up an expert rearrangement of a low-slung, flute-sporting disco workout rich in gritty, funk-fuelled low-end heaviness, while Brazilian favourite Joutro Mundo lowers the tempo on the sun-baked, synth-sporting early evening gorgeousness of languid boogie jam 'Vem Obata'.

There are airings for two of Wilson's most sought-after scalpel works from the "Credit To The Edit" series - superb versions of Brenda Taylor's "You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It Too" and Raw Silk's "Do It To The Music" - as well as a couple of previously heard rearrangements that are on-point as per usual. Wilson first adds even more mind-altering delays and low-slung dub disco flavour to Forrrce's "Keep On Dubbin'", before superbly stretching out the mostly instrumental "Melt Down Mix" of Shirley Lites' synth-laden peak-time classic "Heat You Up".

The Best Remixes Of Golden Soul Records

From Beyond - "Body Resonance" (Aleito remix) (6:22)
Tiempo De Maldad - "Disco Gold" (Azaria remix) (8:12)
Aleito - "Always Here" (Jarle B remix) (5:53)
Review: As the record's rather matter-or-fact titles makes clear, this four-tracker from Golden Soul Records gathers together some of the best remixes they've released digitally on vinyl for the very first time. First up, label founder James Rod delivers a wonderfully dark, sleazy and druggy disco-chug revision of Javier Busto's 'Robot in Mars', before Aleito opts for a more pulsating nu-disco sound on his melodic and all-action rework of From Beyond's 'Body Resonance'. Arguably even better is Azaria's foreboding, percussive and acid-flecked revision of Tempo Del Maldad's 'Disco Gold', while Jarle B's re-make of Aleito's 'Always Here' is an organ-laden disco-tech treat.

Riccio - "We Have Been Waiting"
Funkyjaws - "Picnic"
Petr Serkin - "Spinning Time"
Review: Vinyl-only, 250 copies, no repress... Freedom Sessions certainly know us how to get excited. They've got the vibes to back up their air of exclusivity, too. Each of these four cuts are well-polished deep house cuts the shimmer and shake with the perfect balance of jazz, soul and disco. Native content for the Russian label comes from Buzz Compass (bubbling bass, dreamy chord swoops and a killer loop) and Petr Serkin (filtered bliss that builds and builds). Flying further afield, Italian Riccio dusts off his meanest slap bass while Belarus's Funkyjaws lays down an ultimately timeless lesson in jazz-licked filtered dynamism. Limited and lush... All boxes ticked here.
