Djeko & K'you - "Money Don't Spend Me" (5:33)
Review: Super Spicy Records continues its run with great releases, with this second instalment of the Super Spicy Recipe proving a great compilation with big names of the disco scene rubbing shoulders with some super talented newcomers. On A1, we have Boogietraxx and Monsieur Van Pratt teaming up for the fantastic 'Sigueme', that brings a Latin flavour to the table, followed on A2 by Mexican disco master Hotmood and Italian star Gledd combining their superpowers to bring the maximum jazz spice to the recipe via 'I've Got Jazz'. On the flip, Greek edit master C. Da Afro salts this dish with some 'Ultrafunk', while last but not least, we have French duo Djeko & K'You applying some extra spice with 'Money Don't Spend Me'.

Ethyene - "Release Yourself" (7:32)
LK - "Your Luv Is Mine" (6:32)
Georgi Barrel - "Up The Hill" (6:40)
David Moran - "Weak" (6:27)
Review: Roots For Bloom's consistently on-point SHAG Edits jams continue with typically steamy results. Ethyene takes the lead with a big swooning string sample and shuffling Buckethead style beats, LK brings up the rear slowly and smoulderingly with a delicious slo-mo cosmic chugger, Georgi Barrel's "Up The Hill" is another big sample groove with more than a whiff of Sneak's "Can't Hide From Your Bud" to it. Finally David Moran closes the show with the sexiest jam of the set; the boogie breaks badness of "Weak". Strong

F's Diss (4:34)
B's Diss (7:52)
Review: Sir Funkineven's Apron label has been on the down low for the past few months, but it's a pure stealth move with this split 12" from the founder and the excellent Greg Beato the first of several killer records due over the coming months. In essence the pair take a side each with "F's Diss" from Funkineven channelling Soundstream levels of edit-shaped bliss whilst Miami's pocket dynamo Greg Beato slams through some blinding Hi NRG on "B's Diss". What exactly the originals are is quite secondary to how deadly they've become in the scalpels of this trans-Atlantic pair.

Disco Nightmare (7:41)
Flying Over The Island (5:45)
Review: G-Machine is having a nightmare and he wants you to have one, too. It's not your standard mare, mind. No naked in front of your school assembly business or suddenly realising you've still got exams to do, rather a deep cosmic dream galvanised by raw doses of funk thanks to a slippery slap bass that worms in and out of a hazy weave of synth and pads. "Flying Over The Island" on the B is no nightmare either; a breezy evocative slice of Balearica with infectious harmonic chimes, disco pops and dizzying layers of percussion... It's the perfect wake-up call from the sweetest of dreams. Once again the machine hits the G spot.

Review: New music from Morgan Geist will always be celebrated thanks to his role in Metro Area, and more recently Storm Queen, and the New York producer is certainly on effervescent form with this debut 12" under his new project The Galleria. The four track Calling Card 12" finds Geist calling on the spirit of freestyle, club dubs, razor-edits and bubblegum-pop R&B there is something immediately satisfying to each one of them. Hyperdub artist Jessy Lanza provides some thrilling vocals to both original versions of "Calling Card" and "Mezzanine", the latter is a particularly sweet proposition, and Geist also contributes some superb '80s style dubs.

Bring Them Back Together (6:38)
Review: For the first release on their Ghetto Disco imprint, Edinburgh-based daughter-and-father duo Natasha and Dennis Probert has turned to the cheekily named Serge Gamesbourg. Having already impressed via contributions to Rahaan's Street Edits series, monsieur Gamesbourg is sure to enhance his reputation further with these two reworks. "The Cool, The Hip & The Square" sees him reworking the track that initially inspired the label, extending, chopping and rearranging the killer disco original in all the right places. Arguably even better, though, is the B-side sensuality of "Bring Them Back Together", a glassy-eyed rework of a Philly soul gem that's as sultry as the come.

Jean Claude Gavri - "Share That Beat Of Love" (JCG vinyl mix) (5:21)
Dimitri From Astoria - "Greece Is The Word" (4:06)
Review: Two golden edits with no chin stroking required thanks to the EBO label! Tel Aviv's Jean Claude Gavri does the business on Michael Jackson's "Rock With You", making lavish extensions in all the right places. Dimitri From Astoria (any relation to namesakes from Paris and Blackpool?) follows suit with an equally impressive twist on the Franki Valli classic from Greece. Both already tried and tested floor-jammers since the 70s, these updates do the originals some serious justice.

Jean Claude Gavri - "The Lost Edit"
Moplen - "The Riddum Slave"
Review: The EBO label returns with Seaside Edits don Jean Claude Gavri sharing sides on a 12" with Italian contemporary Moplen that's slightly too vitamin D-infused in tone for the Winter months but will nice up any left leaning discotheque. Any self respecting disco scholar should have no issues IDing the source material here, Gavri taking on the Carly Simon classic "Why" and adding subtle Caribbean disco vibes to proceedings and occasionally dipping into the filters on this extended groove rendition. On the flip "The Riddum Slave" sees Luca Locatelli work similar magic, filling the Grace Jones cut of the near same name with all manner of dub fx, neat loops and hot breaks.

Sleaze
Lullaby
Review: In 2001, Environ boss Morgan Geist took a solo break from Metro Area with a hot new 12" and the Super EP. Inspired by classic techno and house with a heavy dose of dramatic disco, Geist melds the organic sounds of Metro Area with his own innovative style on this EP, incorporating live instrumentation with a funky, machine groove. The A-side cut "24K" melds an old-is-gold DMX house drum track with lush basslines and live string sugar from the Kelley Polar Quartet. On the flip, "Sleaze" takes the dancers into a sweaty mix of new wave chords and stabs (think New Order's Blue Monday or Prelude's more robotic releases) mixed with organic electric piano and dubs. The EP rounds out with "Lullaby" - a melancholy jam that melds Kraftwerk with Candido, jamming numbers beats under delicate chords and a sublime trumpet solo courtesy of jazz virtuoso and house producer James Duncan.

Detective From Kamakura (4:19)
Review: Russian DJ/producer Phil Gerus has been around for a few years, but it's only in the last couple that his reputation has begun to build. This outing on Tensnake's True Romance label follows on from a fine 12" for Lumberjacks Boogie imprint, and a digital-only electrofunk exploration on Futureboogie. The real stunner is A-side "Wearing Her Black Boots Again", a thrusting, Italo-disco exploration full of dirty synth arpeggios, delay-laden percussion hits and rubbery, punk-funk bass. On the flip you'll find the sax-laden, AOR disco shuffle of "Make Time" - blessed as it is with some great blue-eyed soul vocal samples - and the sweaty, drum-machine heavy P-funk rearrangement "Detective From Kamakura".

This time around it's over to Russian producer Phil Gerus; who over the years has appeared everywhere from Sonar Kollektiv and Futureboogie to even ManMakeMusic. The Scenes EP starts out on the A side with the sexy boogie down vibe of "Ohashi Sky Garden" which afterwards gets an absolutely electric remix by London based retrovert Richard Sen. On the flip, the retro, neon-lit aesthetics continue on the funk hoedown of "Naha Swim" while the slow motion romance of "Kiss Of A Kind" features one absolutely roaring sax solo over some sweet FM synths and tape hiss; nice one.

Ginny - "Can't Be Serious"
Clive Stevens & Brainchild - "Mystery Man"
Review: Two super-rare and in demand cosmic slow-jams! Ginny's "Can't Be Serious" has been the talk of the town ever since it was featured on DJ's Harvey cult Sarcastic Disco mix. This unique 1983 Balearic-cosmic-disco styled burner with very intense vocals has conquered the hearts of many. Now finally available again, re-mastered from the original tapes. Renowned jazz-funk fusionist Clive Stevens has a career spanning over 30 years and has previously collaborated with the likes of Afrika Bambaata, Manfred Mann, Billy Cobham and others. His 1983 "Mystery Man" track is a beautiful, exotic cosmic disco jam previously released on italo disco label Many Records and the German Frog records. This rare and sought after track comes in original remixed version featuring famous percussionist/composer Mino Cinelu who has played with Sting, Miles Davis and Weather Report. Irresistible jams!

"Coco's Nuts" is a subtle Balearic beast, with a funky guitar riff riding shuffling drum patterns and a slow BPM. I Hold You (5:09)
Review: The first release on freshly minted rework/re-edit label Saint Wax comes courtesy of Gledd, an Italian producer who has previously beefed-up old disco, jazz-funk and boogie cuts for the likes of Masterworks Music, About Disco and Midnight Riot. In keeping with his other releases, the four cuts here are all house-style re-edits, meaning he's combined elements of old tracks with bombastic new beats. It's not a particularly complex formula, but it is one that works really well - especially on stand-out 'I Hold You', which sees Gledd successfully tool-up a Clavinet-sporting gospel disco number. Also worth checking is the more loopy, disco-house style opener 'Behind a Cloud' and sax solo-laden disco-funk jam 'Sweet Love'.

Beats In Space
Awake
Review: Following swiftly on from The Glimmers belated album debut for the Gomma Empire, four of the tracks are lifted and slapped either side of this twelve inch. Whomp That Sucker is one of this year's most delightfully visceral albums with music that belongs on vinyl really, so it's nice to see the German label appeasing the record collectors. "U Rocked My World" is sprawling raw analogue bliss, the low acid bass and thumping drums punctuated by a diva vocal refrain. Heavy arpeggios and inventively chaotic drum filters characterise the album's title track, whilst the dominant bassline on "Beats In Space" are a hall mark of Ray Mang's involvement. The best is perhaps reserved for last with the Robotnik meets Moroder Italo analogue drama of "Awake".

Theme From Oliver Casco
Review: The fourth Nano Records release focuses again on mysterious producer Glitch who, after his debut EP "TipTop/RockOn" has gained respect and support from the underground scene. Here is his new 12", the first out of 3 vinyls that will feature the hottest tracks from the forthcoming album Superwavin. Not much is known about Glitch's real identity: apparently he was found by Spiller himself, drunk and homeless in the backstreets of Trieste, in the north-eastern corner of Italy. But maybe it's best to hear the story directly from Spiller: "Some three years ago I was driving back from a gig in Slovenia and I decided to stop by Trieste, the first Italian city across the border. Walking in the streets of the centre I stumbled across this boy, surrounded by plastic bags just like an ordinary bum, but he was actually fiddling with a self-constructed "Theremin" and a drum machine. What was coming out was nothing special, however I found myself intrigued by this strange character and decided to approach him. He immediately said that he would have talked to me only if I would bring him to the closest "Osmizza" (the traditional inns of Trieste) and invite him for a drink. A couple of glasses later, he began to tell me everything about his bizarre life made of struggles and synthesizers. Then we went out to the streets again and he performed for me a new song, helping himself with a vocoder. That was the first time I heard the riff of Superwavin. A few months later this homeless boy showed up at my place in Venice and brought me 3 CDs full of incredible recordings and the final version of Superwavin. Then he disappeared and I had no news from him... until I received a postcard from Barcelona. Taking a closer look at the card, I noticed there was something strange: beside the stamps he had glued a memory card containing a 24bit audio file. On the back of the postcard I read: "Theme From Oliver Casco - Greetings, Glitch". Right now I absolutely have no clue of where Glitch is, however I decided to include his most recent productions in a series of 3 vinyls to make them known to the world. By doing so, I am sure that Glitch will eventually show up to collect his royalties. It's the only thing I can do in order to know if he is still alive and kicking. Glitch is more than his name, it's his way of life" - Spiller.

Review: It's a family affair, and an illicit one to boot, as the Ruf Kutz label arrives at it's ninth release with a 12" featuring famous cover versions from Ruf Dug and affiliates on a one off pressing, "don't bother suing cos there's no fuckin money". Leading the way is Glowing Palms who, perhaps as a reaction to Skream's latter day love of disco, turns in a wonderfully charming marimba heavy cover of dubstep classic "Midnight Request Line" retitled here as "Ask Me After Midnite (Tropical Marimba Wobble For The Disenfranchised)". London-dwelling Australian producer Bell Towers channels his inner Chris Lowe with a Balearic squelch take on 80s Pet Shop Boys hit "Domino Dancing" whilst Ruf Kutz leads the RKs through a stellar Compass Point rendition of "Music Sounds Better With You".

Taking Over
Review: Whether it's with his fellow Bear Raf Daddy or through his solo endeavours on the Greco Roman label, it's clear that Joe Goddard is the Hot Chipper that's enjoyed most individual success away from the Domino nested group. The Taking Over EP sees Goddard further work his magic outside of the Hot Chip comfort zone, opening in fine fashion with the Boris Duglosh collaboration "Step Together" which unleashes an intricate mixture of subtle piano house and synth-pop lyrics. "She Burns" meanwhile features the talent of Mara Carlyle and resembles a straight-up deep house burner with a veritable night edge, while "Bassline '12" heads down weirder paths and uses the synthesizer's polyphonies to guide the track into oblivion, whereas title track "Taking Over" takes us down a winding, more placid path with Goddard's own voice standing proudly amid dreary-eyed melodies and mild pads.

Review: Antoine Harispuru, otherwise known as Golden Bug, has been delivering consistently excellent levels of disco-tinged house and electro over the last eight or so years, and it was only a matter of time before he's pop up on Ivan Smagghe and Leon Oakey's eclectic Les Disques De La Mort. The original mix of "Wild Boys" features Yan Wagner drooling over the beats in his familiarly lamenting, 80's reminiscent style, and there's a Lord Tusk mix on the back of it; the Londoner adds a subtle EBM flavour to the song, making harder and more penetrating on the dancefloor. "Ik Voel Je" is the weirdo in the crew, a magnificent piece of lo-fi psychedelia that stutters its guitar riffs amid heavy distortions and delays, while "L'Horloge" enters Kraftwerk territories thanks to its broken chops of mechanical voices and robotic beats. A little tip, indeed!

Here they make their debut on JD Twitch's admirable Optimo Music outlet with another quartet of throbbing machine jams. Review: The Golden Filter's "Autonomy" album has been a surefire highlight of the year for lovers of fresh twists on the coldwave tradition, and now the London-based outfit's music is undergoing the remix process with a stellar cast of sonic surgeons. First up is Medlar, who takes "Autonomy" and roughs it up into a decidedly freaky house diversion that keeps the edgy spirit of the original intact. Anna Wall takes "New Politik" into sparse, minimalist places, while Curses adds a seductive strain of post-punk gloominess into "Electric Light". Isolating completes the set with an icy industrial reduction of "Infinity" - a powerful atmospheric piece that does great service to the original.

Review: Long-standing Japanese house ambassador Gonno return to the mighty International Feel family. And he's done so with three full-flavoured creative departures: "Obscurant" is like standing under a powerful waterfall. Refreshing, stimulating but dangerously strong that you may well lose your footing. "A Life With Clarinet", meanwhile, is a firing breakbeat jazz number that sits somewhere between S.P.Y and Bonobo. Finally Houndstooth's Call Super calms us down with a deep, dubby tech twist on "Obscurant" that switches the original's howling gales to a misty sea breeze.

Track Five
Track Five (Ame remix)
Review: Ever since its oh-so-brief three minute appearance in the 2005 DFA Holiday Mix, the previously unreleased "Track 5" has been taunting Delia Gonzales and Gavin Russom completists. Hooray to DFA for finally unveiling the track in all it's ten minutes of soporific glory. With Russom knee deep in remixes and his increasingly psychedelic Crystal Ark project, it's been purported this is potentially the last time we'll see the contemporary wizard on vinyl with Gonzales. If that's the case it's fitting that the duo appears to be sauntering towards the light on the cover. The addition of a truly breath taking dancefloor reimagination from German duo Ame means this is a fine final chapter to an all too brief but excellent partnership.

Making Love
Review: Great underground disco hit. Greg Carmichael and Patrick Adams put together all the sound arrangements in inspirational style, which characterized all their productions in a joyful dance anthem. Check out the break towards the end with whispers and moans. This break isn't present on the B-Side which features a shorter version. Written by Patrick Adams, Gregory Carmichael and F Hauser. Produced by Greg Carmichael, Bill Kamarra and William Sanders. Arranged by Patrick Adams.
