I Want It All Now
Cat: MR 1012. Rel: 28 Oct 19
  1. Peggi Blu - "I Want It All Now" (Justin Van Der Volgen edit) (6:59)
  2. Gregg Diamond - "This Side Of Midnight" (Justin Van Der Volgen edit) (6:58)
Review: Celebrating 10 years since his seminal mix "Try To Find Me Vol 2" dropped and turned diggers and editors green with envy (before causing en-mass search and ID-request for all his obscurities), My Rules boss Justin Van Der Volgen has decided to unleash two of his special edits for a very limited time. Peggi Blu's "I Want It All Now" pops and tickles with its juicy slap bass before she takes the lead and sets fire to the mic with her smouldering vocals. On the B we find an edit of "This Side Of Midnight" where Gregg Diamond's vocals are brought right to the front of the mix and the disco feels are so strong you can tangibly feel them. Catch this is you can.

  3. Anthony Mansfield & DJ M3 - "It's Too Late" (5:36)
  4. Gledd - "When You Move" (6:21)
Review: Sleazy McQueen presents another wicked serving of Disco deviance on the always reliable Whiskey Disco. The North Carolina based imprint's 57th edition gives us four more surefire disco edits by the likes of Tony Chocoloney from Melbourne, Australia who gives us some funked-up soulpower on "Less Groove", Ukrainian Alex Zuiev gives us a loungey kinda something' on the tres chic "Valentina" and Anthony Mansfield delivers an unrepentant use of sleek filter sweeps throughout the slo-mo antics of "It's Too Late" featuring a bit of help from good buddy DJ M3.

African Spirits
Cat: SCEP 480. Rel: 29 Nov 17
  1. African Spirits (7:33)
  2. New World Shuffle (feat Bridgette Amofah) (7:50)
Review: Last spotted on wax together 16 years ago on New Standards, Italian kindred spirits and diggers Conte and Petrella collide once again. A culmination of many records savoured and ideas shared between the two friends, this 12" is long overdue and fizzes with fusion. "African Spirit" is focused on a rolling tribal MAW style house rhythm with Gianluca adding his signature trombone with staccato finesse while "New World Shuffle" is a much dreamier, smoky affair that sounds perfect any time between sunset and sunrise. Spiritual.

  2. GOD - "Chicha D'Humo" (6:11)
  3. Just Baker - "You Make Me Feel So Fine" (6:37)
Review: For the sixth edition of Sleazy McQueen's limited run on Whiskey Disco, you can bet that he's gonna serve up some serious disco deviance - and he sure as hell doesn't disappoint! First up on the A side, come and dance (a little bit closer!) with Tromso's Doc L. Junior on the very familiar hooks of "Closer", GOD (Grumpy Old DJs) from Colombia deliver some sexy late night mood lighting on "Chicha D'Humo" and newcomer Just Baker plays it well rolled (low slung!) on the irresistibly groovy "You Make Me Feel So Fine".

My Baby's Got ESP
  1. Four Below Zero - "My Baby's Got ESP" (3:32)
  2. Golden Flamingo Orchestra - "The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" (feat Margo Williams) (4:51)
Review: This essential 45 from Japan's Octave Lab brings together two essential productions from legendary disco studio wizard Patrick Adams. On the A-side you'll find Four Below Zero's 1976 modern soul scene anthem 'My Baby's Got E.S.P' (originally simply titled 'E.S.P', fact fans), a sing-along treat that arguably counts as one of Adams' most accessible and straight-forward productions (this is not a criticism, by the way, just recognition that he made some seriously bonkers disco and boogie records over the years). Over on the flip it's all about the Peter Brown co-produced 'The Guardian Angel is Watching Over Us', a rare 1979 cut that features a sublime lead vocal from Margo Williams. While not as celebratory as the A-side, it's every bit as essential.

  1. Lifted (5:46)
  2. Panties (7:01)
Review: British DJ and producer G Markus has appeared previously on some top imprints such as Soul Clap Records, Exploited, Roots for Bloom and Monologues in recent times - so he sure has the credentials. He strikes out on his own here for the fifth edition in his G Edits series. The A side features the classic Stateside vocal house vibe of "Lifted", while on the flip there's something more funky and lo-slung that you have come to expect from the man - on the deep down and disco dirty groove of "Panties".

Baby Baby Please
Cat: ART 001. Rel: 04 Dec 19
  1. Baby Baby Please (7:27)
  2. True Destiny (9:32)
Review: Some artistic edits from a brand new series. We're not sure who the "unknown artist" is behind the reworks (which date from this year and 2016 respectively), but it's clear that they know what they're doing. A-side "Baby Baby Please" is a wonderfully dubbed-out and glassy-eyed revision of a lesser-known Italo-disco/Hi-NRG cover of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" that boasts a killer vocal breakdown midway through. Over on the flip, "True Destiny" is an epic, low-slung revision of an obscure disco number that rightly emphasizes the heavy groove pushing the track forward and includes some tasty delay and echo trickery.

Cat: ART 002. Rel: 07 Jul 20
  1. Stop (8:48)
  2. Remember (8:46)
Review: The first instalment of the Gallery edits series, which landed in stores at the very end of 2019, was an artful, off-kilter treat, so we're expecting big things from this eagerly awaited follow-up. A-side "Stop" is simply superb: a clattering, delay-laden, dub disco style revision of a poodle perm-sporting bunch of early-to-mid-'80s electronic disco laden with percussion hits, ear-pleasing synthesizers, druggy, arpeggio-style bass and familiar-sounding vocal snippets. It just keeps building throughout, suggesting dancefloor pandemonium is almost guaranteed. Flipside "Remember" is rather good, too, with the mystery audio art lovers re-wiring a deliciously camp, over-the-top electro-disco stomper.

When You Touch Me
When You Touch Me (white vinyl 12")
Cat: WES 22122WHITE. Rel: 14 Jul 20
  1. When You Touch Me (vocal - Larry Levan mix) (10:40)
  2. When You Touch Me (instrumental - Larry Levan mix) (11:05)
Review: Taana Gardner had plenty of huge disco hits in her arsenal and for that reason was a voice frequently heard at cult stateside clubs like The Loft, Studio 54 and Paradise Garage throughout the 70s and 80s. Larry Levan of course was one of those who gave her such a big platform and here we're presented with two of his mixes of her "When You Touch Me" single. The vocal is an intense jazz-funk ride with mad keys and a groove to die for, all with those sensuous vocals up top. The instrumental is no less intense, but allows the skilled instrumentation and bristling arrangement to really shine through.

Let's Lovedance Tonight

  1. Let's Lovedance Tonight (Danny Krivit re-edit) (5:51)
  2. Let's Lovedance Tonight (original version) (6:40)
Review: Danny Krivit's fine re-edit of Gary's Gang classic "Let's Lovedance Tonight" first surfaced on Nervous Records back in 2007, and has been something of an in-demand item with disco DJs ever since. This, then, is a more than welcome reissue. The genius of Krivit's scalpel job is that it merely emphasizes the sections of the original that dancefloors want to hear; specifically, the acoustic guitar and organ-heavy groove, killer drum breaks and winding saxophone lines. It's simple but devilishly effective. For those seeking the full vocal experience, the original 1979 12" version is included on the flip.

Cat: FW 004. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Blumareciano
  2. Blumareciano (San Proper remix)
  3. Begum
Review: Mehmet Aslan and Miajica represent some of the finest operators in Basel, and their Fleeting Wax label is on hand to represent what's good in the Swiss scene and beyond. On this latest release they turn to Eva Geist, who has previously been spotted on Macadam Mambo and Elestial Sound with her beautiful mix of synths and vocals, striking a chord between noirish synth pop and heads down club music. "Blumareciano" is a wonderfully seductive, slightly spooky stew of a track which San Proper then injects with his usual freaky energy to make for a more uptempo party version. Then Geist's "Begum" stretches over the B-side in a bubbling blend of delayed voices, tribal percussion and general outernational surrealism.

  2. Where They're From (4:33)
  3. Want You (5:14)
  4. Get Over (5:26)
Review: German percussionist Kolja Gerstenberg makes no attempt to hide his love for the drums on this razor sharp drop for Lumberjacks In Hell, building on his previous outings on Suol and Smile For A While. The drums are sizzling hot on "Feel Yo", tastefully overdriven and embellished with some MPC-style sample juggling that should satisfy those who like their house tracks hot as Dante's inferno. "Where They're From" is no slouch either, keeping the pressure up with a liberal dose of soul poured in for good measure. The keys and live bass on "Want You" add to the feverish mood, and then "Get Over" sends things spiraling out on a Latin-spiced cosmic journey.

Review: Phil Gerus is a rising talent that fits right into the (Emotional) Especial mould with his sharply realised 80s bombast and dynamic electro funk production style. Treating body-popping club tracks as a vessel for heartfelt expression, these tracks have it all from Linn Drum boogie to fully capable instrumental chops, all shot through with Gerus' choice new wave vocals. Lauer hops on board for a seductive remix of "Still Blind" that ups the sensual intensity of the track while keeping the club foremost in his mind, before Jamie Paton steps up on the flip with a couple of freakier turns that dub the original out into deadly, spooky jams for more adventurous party people to get loose to.

  1. I Don't Care If You're Plastic (4:32)
  2. Plastic Dub (Tom Noble remix) (6:13)
Review: The fact that Phil Gerus doesn't care if we're plastic should come as something of a relief to any Lego mini-figures or Playmobil people reading this review. In fact, such is the funk-fuelled, Clavinet-heavy brilliance of the Moscow producer's latest chunk of authentic disco/electrofunk fusion - fittingly coming out on Tom Noble's Superior Elevation imprint - that we could imagine those made of rigid, oil-based materials shaking a fabricated limb or two. If anything, Noble's accompanying remix - a bustling chunk of arpeggio-rich space disco that sounds like a cross between Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and French Euro-disco pioneers Space - is even better.

  3. Detective From Kamakura (4:19)
Review: Russian DJ/producer Phil Gerus has been around for a few years, but it's only in the last couple that his reputation has begun to build. This outing on Tensnake's True Romance label follows on from a fine 12" for Lumberjacks Boogie imprint, and a digital-only electrofunk exploration on Futureboogie. The real stunner is A-side "Wearing Her Black Boots Again", a thrusting, Italo-disco exploration full of dirty synth arpeggios, delay-laden percussion hits and rubbery, punk-funk bass. On the flip you'll find the sax-laden, AOR disco shuffle of "Make Time" - blessed as it is with some great blue-eyed soul vocal samples - and the sweaty, drum-machine heavy P-funk rearrangement "Detective From Kamakura".

  3. Flash Burn (6:26)
Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.

Review: Say yes! The definitive gossamer Italo floor fuel of Ida No and Johnny Jewel's Glass Candy outfit enjoys an expanded reissue here on sexy lavender vinyl after over a decade out of print. Nothing but synthetic positivity as both the title track and "Drumm" stride with an almost marching feel before "Where Time Sits Still" plunges much deeper into moody new romantic cinematics. Elsewhere other highlights include the slinky poignancy that lingers from every spacious bass pluck on "City Lights" and the trembling ambience and pressurised atmosphere of the finale "Sanctuary". Yes please.

The first Discipline Of Swing kicks off with Gledd laying down a chunky house beat and some liquid funk lines on "Doin' My Thang", before Monsieur Van Pratt buffs up a chant-a-long burner of the highest order for "Everybody On The Floor". Review: Texan psych-funk fun time outfit Golden Dawn Arkestra get some remix treatment via this double pack from Razor-N-Tape, which leads in with Austin Ato's positively dreamy deep house version of "Children Of The Sun". JKriv takes on "Cosmic Dancer" and makes it into a slick disco-fied workout that adheres to the RNT vibe, while Dicky Trisco takes the track and makes it into a suitably interstellar strutter heavy on the synth lines. Then then the second slab of wax offers up a side each to the original versions, from the Afrobeat-indebted "Children Of The Sun" to the sweet and starry-eyed disco of "Cosmic Dancer".

Review: The Golden Filter's "Autonomy" album has been a surefire highlight of the year for lovers of fresh twists on the coldwave tradition, and now the London-based outfit's music is undergoing the remix process with a stellar cast of sonic surgeons. First up is Medlar, who takes "Autonomy" and roughs it up into a decidedly freaky house diversion that keeps the edgy spirit of the original intact. Anna Wall takes "New Politik" into sparse, minimalist places, while Curses adds a seductive strain of post-punk gloominess into "Electric Light". Isolating completes the set with an icy industrial reduction of "Infinity" - a powerful atmospheric piece that does great service to the original.

Review: Jose's tones have been charmed by remixes in the past; notably by Jori Hulkkonen on "Crosses" and Todd Terje on "Killing For Love". Almost 10 years later and Holy Ghost! and Dino Soccio remind us how it's done on "Let It Carry You" from Jose's 2014 album Vestiges & Claws. Holy Ghost! gives Gonzales such a sparkling polish and spaces out his lyrics he sounds like Hot Chip while Dino adds a more cosmic, chuggy dubby Norwegian sound. Review: Given their deep-rooted knowledge of the re-edit scene, it was probably only a matter of time before the Razor 'N' Tape crew turned their attention to Colombian scalpel fiends Felipe Gordon & Vagabundo Club Social. This outing on Aaron Dae and JKriv's imprint could well be the South Americans' finest work to date. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Shakala", a gently tooled-up and dubbed-out revision of a dusty, tropical disco-funk treat rich in Fela Kuti style Afrobeat grooves, rising horns and flanged guitar riffs. That said, we've also got a lot of love for the fiery horns, bustling rhythms and warm bass of "Los Bareteros" (a revision of a well known, boogaloo-era Afro-Latin jazz dancefloor classic), as well as the similarly minded - but altogether heavier - "El Cateter".

Review: In keeping with other reissues from the Espacial Discos imprint, Goya's "House on the Sea" is a suitably sought-after track. Original copies of the original 1979 12" on which it was first featured will set you back over a ton (in British pounds, at least), so this new pressing is certainly welcome. The track itself is something of a meandering, early evening delight, mixing stoned West Coast rock vibes - think slightly wild vocals, starry electric pianos and Steely Dan guitar solos - with a whisper of spacey synthesizer action and a few nods towards rubbery AOR disco. On the flip you'll find original '79 A-side "Mandy", an up-tempo, Steve Miller Band or Steely Dan style workout that's jaunty, groovy and tons of fun.

Review: We've become accustomed to Athens of the North delivering 7" singles packed full of obscure gems. Interestingly, the two tracks here - as great as they are - are relatively easy to come by, both being featured on GQ's overlooked by readily available 1980 album GQ Two. Even so, they're more than worthy of the reissue treatment, with A-side "Lies" - previously re-edited by Theo Parrish for his Ugly Edits series - offering a particularly sweet dose of warm and fuzzy disco/soul fusion. Flispide "Is It Cool" is almost as essential, with soaring horns and a killer bassline combining perfectly with the band's urgent, attractive vocals.

Review: Even if Russian producer Gradient Logic is found here turning out the business on Serbian label Disco Fruit, the sound on the Far Away EP comes on like a snappy fusion of Garage-ready New York proto house and laid back West Coast boogie of the highest order. It's the third vinyl release for Tonbe's label, and once more marks the serious clout behind the Eastern European operation and its closest artists. Just try grooving to the slick bass pops on "Feel Me" without being transported to an early 80s dancefloor. There's a more organic funk to lock into on "I Want You Slide", but as ever it's hard to tell where the sampling ends and the musicianship begins on this utterly natural sounding EP.

Review: Expert reissue label Soundway look to 1980s Trinidad & Tobago for their latest rare gem. Two cuts of "Parang" - a sort of South American folk music originated from Venezuelan and Colombian immigrants and later infused with Caribbean rhythms, disco and soca vibes. As such both tunes are impossibly sunny, uplifting and loose groovers that will work dance floors into a spin at any time of year. Colleen Grant's take on the style is driven by a neat funk baseline coupled with her glorious vocals, while Sandra Hamilton's is more down and dirty with rump wiggling drums.

Green is considered family at Bear Towers any one that has had the pleasure of meeting him will now what a top top guy he is, so it's great to get the "Pluto's Retreat". We chose well with this remix as Optimus (none other than Pete Herbert and Mat Anthony) deliver a scorching club version that has been played on many a Saturday night by The Idjuts and label big-Bear Mr Kotey - it's pure e-music. On the flipside Mr Kotey presents "Piston Fiston". Though it's a serious piece of music "Piston Fiston" is a term used by our good friend Young'un for describing using your fist instead of your cock when giving it to a lady "That fist should be moving faster than a piston". Just like this crazy inspired work that combines none other than Andrew Meecham (The Emperor Machine) on session musician duty. Then the Italian glamour boy Fabrizio Mammarella gets roped it to remix the parts created and deliver the first instalment of the "Piston Fiston" project which sounds like 4 records in one.

  2. You Are The One
Review: A bona fide Afro funk legend, Tony Grey cut his teeth in Nigeria as a James Brown impersonator before establishing pacts with his backing band The Black 7 who later morphed into the Ozimba Messengers. Their album The Message was released in 1981 and gave us both of these outrageously funky jams. "Time Factor" is undiluted disco complete with cool pops and whistles that Dave Lee has been championing for 30 years. "You Are The One" shows more of its Nigerian heartbeat amidst the tight horns and Tony's emphatic vocal delivery. Complete with a poster, this is a really special reissue.

Review: The first missive from freshly minted Russian label Rubezh dives into the back catalogue of Gruppa Imperiya, an obscure Serbian band who released a handful of CDs during the post-Soviet era of the 1990s. Side A boasts two of their best vintage tracks: the deep, bubbly Balearic synth-pop of "Leningrad Train (Extended Version)" and the chunky, Soul II Soul and Pet Shop Boys inspired brilliance of "Vspomni Obe Mne (Extended Version)", whose cherry piano riffs are wonderfully life-affirming. You'll find a trio of contemporary reworks nestled on the flipside, with the throbbing Lazerchoke edit of the Euro-disco inspired "Ne Pokiday" and the Low Budget Family tweak of "Leningrad Train" standing out.

  3. Shake That Body (remix) (6:24)
Review: It may have taken the best part of six months, but Glenn Underground has finally delivered his first new music of 2020. The Chicago house legend is in fine form on "Shake That Body", a warm and jazzy chunk of deep house/disco fusion rich in tasty instrumentation and topped off by a fine female lead vocal courtesy of newcomer T.H.I.C.K. It's accompanied on the A-side by the superb "Dubbl" version, which sees Glenn Underground strip the track back to a killer dub disco groove before bringing back the keys, acoustic guitars, spacey synths and snippets of T.H.I.C.K's vocal. Over on the flip you'll find a seductive "Remix" that subtly moves the track closer to deep, soulful house territory.

  2. In The City (6:18)
Review: It's been four years since A&R Edits ceased releasing music after serving up nine essential EPs between 2013 and 2015. This return to action has been masterminded by Merseyside scalpel fiends Greg Wilson ("GW") and Henry Greenwood, whose fine revision of Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" kick-started the imprint six years ago. A-side "Disco Mondo" is a rolling revision of a lesser-known breathy disco jam of (we think) Italian origin. It boasts a metronomic groove, wah-wah guitars, elongated organ chords, congas for days and a few well-placed swirling electronic effects. Over on side B, "In The City" is a dreamy chunk of mid-tempo, Italo-disco influenced synth-pop.

Review: After a first volume that included Smagghe & Cross and Tom Bolas, Duca Bianco are back with another round of deviant disco delights for discerning diggers to get down to. Indovina Key's "Suy Taysik" is an insanely catch slice of synthy-disco, while Guillaume De Bois bathes in the sludge, all held together by some gorgeous full-fat leads. The omin-present Cherrystones brings a heavier tint to the B side with the clattering pots n' pans vibe of "Grunts Breakfast" and then Maybe Tonight bring a serious dose of 80s madcap sampling and boogie funk to "Tribuna Politica".

Review: London's Tropical Disco are back with their eleventh edition of superb edits. All re-spliced and remixed with precision and above all - respectf! First up is label boss Tim Burnett aka Moodena who reuses a rather familiar hook on the funked-up brass section of "The Chase", followed by the lo-slung and sultry late night business of "Addicted To You" by Alex Satrorial on the A side. On the flip, we have got Parisian Chevals (Masterworks/Hotwax) going deep on the sensual boogie-down groove of "Saturn In Tropical" followed by an oldie but a goodie in the form of Gledd & The Funk District's "Late At Night".

Review: Bostonian DJ, producer and crate digger Serge Gamesbourg has spent much of the last two years slavishly digging into the history of Massachusetts' little known underground disco scene. Here, over mixed and unmixed discs, he presents the results. Naturally, there's little you'll have heard before, and plenty of high-grade dancefloor fire, much of it re-edited or subtly reworked by Gamesbourg himself. Highlights include the fuzzy, lo-fi funk of Gypsy's "Keep It Comin' On", the turn-of-the-'80s, synth-laden disco-funk dazzle of Portable Patrol's "Cop Bop", the celebratory release of "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics and the smooth, blue-eyed soul shimmer of "Wait Until Dark" by The Chris Rhodes Band.

Review: With the capabilities of modern discology allowing for the current deluge of disco 'edits', most of which do little beyond extending an intro for ease of mixing, it would have been an intriguing prospect to see what disco edit progenitor Walter Gibbons thought. Sadly we'll never find out, but current edit profiteers could do worse than check out this retrospective of Walter Gibbons remixes compiled by Strut. Nominally split between the 70s and 80s, the first section documents the imaginative reworks of the Salsoul catalogue that helped cement Gibbon's reputation whilst the second focuses on the mid eighties period where he worked closely with Arthur Russell. It was a chance encounter at the Salsoul office which afforded the then 22-year-old Gibbons an opportunity to remix Double Exposure's "Ten Percent", which became the first commercially successful 12inch release. That mix is one of seven tracks which aptly demonstrate the percussion heavy style Gibbon's branded Jungle Music, with the closing 11 minute mix of Betty LaVette perhaps the most impressive example. The second section provides more sonic intrigue, starting off with a previously unreleased remix of Arthur Russell's "See Through", which is followed by Gibbons seminal take on Dinosaur L's "Go Bang" and perhaps the masterpiece of his career - a nine minute remix of Strafe's "Set It Off". Strut have delivered yet another superlative retrospective here. Released on a double LP with a limited bonus mix CD, this is not to be missed!

Review: San Francisco-based crate digger, DJ and producer James Glass is the latest disco nerd to take up Joey Negro's invitation to show off about the depth of his record collection. Predictably, his two-disc selection is packed full of unknown and unheralded gems, from the post-disco weirdness of Electric Chairs' " So Many Ways" to the shuffling, Wurlitzer organ-boasting "Nervoso" by Rexy, and Expansives' quirky electrofunk jam "Life With You (Instrumental)". A word, too, for the "Cocaine in My Brain"-inspired reggae disco goodness of Harold Butler's "Do It Anyday", which is a summer anthem in waiting.

Suppliers to the likes of Kenny Dope, Phil Asher and Dimitri, Gino and Federico have carved their crate craft to insane levels over the last 30+ years... As shown on this detailed, widescreen boogie, funk and disco collection for BBC. Splattering the vibrant collection with a handful of their own edits (TB Funk's salubrious struts on "Free Blow", fly-by boogie falsettos on Living Color's "Plastic People"), the Grasso bro's have put together a package that's eye-opening, enlightening and damn fine to party to. Review: Claudio Casalini's Best Record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. Grupo Almendra hailed from Venezuela, and they released their sole album Almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of Latin American musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. Whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of Grupo Almendra.

As you might expect, all of the edited material is exceptionally obscure and on-point, with Grusane variously touching-up slamming disco, celebratory jazz-funk, slick boogie, sax-sporting disco-funk (see the brilliant "Do It" by Shabadoo), sleazy slow jams (Daniele Patuuchi's sublime "Sacrifice") and, more surprisingly, steel band funk (Macho's fine version of "Mucho Macho").
