Les Dance (remixes) (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: HEARTDB 83. Rel: 01 Feb 17
  1. Les Dance (Jean Claude Gavri vocal remix) (7:09)
  2. Les Dance (Jean Claude Gavri 2017 dub edit) (6:35)
Review: Over the last few years, Israeli producer Jean-Claude Gavri has reworked all manner of vintage dancefloor treats, often delivering brilliantly percussive or subtly tooled-up reinterpretations. This time round, he's working his magic on David Bowie's 1983 classic "Let's Dance". Interestingly, it sounds like Gavri had access to the master tapes during the remixing process, because the A-side remix is a wonderfully dubbed-out, synth-laden interpretation that sounds like a cross between the work of The Reflex and the Idjut Boys. The flipside Dub Edit is pretty tasty, too, and naturally concentrates more on both the rolling percussion and killer synth bassline.

  3. Gwen McCrae - "Keep The Fire Burning" (JN Special dub #3) (6:49)
  4. Wardell Piper - "The Power Of Love" (JN Power Of The Boogie mix) (7:11)
Review: Thanks to soaring demand on the second-hand market, Joey Negro has decided to re-press this killer collection of disco remixes that originally appeared on a limited-edition Record Store Day release. All four were created, but not released, during the making of his superb Remixed With Love albums. The A-side boasts two versions of Lonnie Liston Smith classic "Space Princess"; an epic, peak-time disco revision and a brilliant beats version (the "Break Mix"") that consists of little more than punchy percussion, trippy effects and bags of energy. Turn to the flip for Negro's impeccably delay-laden, New York style dub of Gwen McCrae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a spine-tingling, sing-along rearrangement of Wardell Piper's lesser-celebrated disco-boogie classic "The Power of Love".

  3. Folamour - "When She Moves, I'm Moved" (7:41)
  4. Gari Romalis & Lello Di Franco - "Luv Game" (6:53)
Review: In tribute to Record Store Day, the Diggin Disco Deep crew has put together what could be its tastiest 12" yet. Pressed on squeaky clean white vinyl, volume five in the series boasts cuts from some of the edit scene's best-loved talents. Lipski kicks things off with the blissfully wavy loops and languid Balearic house grooves of "Magical Luv", before the Silver Rider hits the mark via the softly spun nu-disco goodness of "Madness". On the flip you'll find EP highlight "When She Moves, I'm Moved" by Folamour, a sax-laden shuffle through deep house/disco fusion that sneakily pays tribute to a wedding party favourite, and the head-in-the-clouds deep house bump of Gari Romalis and Lello di Franco's "Luv Game".

Make Me Feel EP (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: RNTR 025. Rel: 22 May 19
  1. Where You Belong (5:58)
  2. Here's To You Mr Robinson (6:04)
  3. Make Me Feel (6:21)
Review: On wax by dope demand! This Razor-N-Tape 2013 release has been a cult classic for many years but never seen the light of the 12"... until now, thanks to the constant pestering of the Discogs community. All three tracks from the original release are here but it's "Where You Belong" that most are after due to its beautiful spacious beats, sweeping strings and awesome Dionne Warwick vocal texture. The whole release is charmed, though; "Here's To You Mr. Robinson" gets a little smokey on our souls while "Makes Me Feel" should get us all very blissed out. Do not sleep on this one, it won't hang around.

Incantations (limited 12")
Cat: BST X056. Rel: 08 Apr 19
  1. Incantations
  2. Incantations (instrumental)
Review: G.A.N.G. was a short-lived studio project from Giorgio Giordano, Giorgio Dolce and Roberto Zanetti (Savage). In 1983 they released "Incantations", a plush cosmic disco burner that rides a slow tempo but hits heavy with its rich layers of synth and slick guitar licks. Best are giving it a fresh airing with this on-point reissue, bringing the chugging bass arps back into the fold of a sympathetic scene that celebrates just this kind of evocative, sensual slow-mo party fodder. The original mix elevates in the second half with a soaring vocal from Stefania Dal Pino, but if that doesn't appeal there's a purely instrumental take on the B side that focuses purely on the groove.

Gimme Your Love (12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: BSTX 044. Rel: 29 Oct 18
  1. Gimme Your Love (vocal) (6:45)
  2. Gimme Your Love (instrumental) (7:16)
Review: Here's another highly desirable slice of formative party fuel from the dusty highways and byways of dance music culture, brought to you by the diligent miners at Best Records. The Gong's Gang was a one-off alias for the equally one-off Nicolosi Family, a collective of real-life brothers and sisters who knew a thing or two about classic early 80s Italo boogie. "Gimme Your Love" is a stellar jam, with Rosanna Nicolosi out front on vocals and the cascading synths and bass stewing in an intoxicating blend that should have any funk detective frothing with approval. Whether you want the full vocal hit or the subtly dubbed out instrumental, this is a jam thoroughly deserving of a second run in the sun.

  1. Time Factor
  2. You Are The One
Review: A bona fide Afro funk legend, Tony Grey cut his teeth in Nigeria as a James Brown impersonator before establishing pacts with his backing band The Black 7 who later morphed into the Ozimba Messengers. Their album The Message was released in 1981 and gave us both of these outrageously funky jams. "Time Factor" is undiluted disco complete with cool pops and whistles that Dave Lee has been championing for 30 years. "You Are The One" shows more of its Nigerian heartbeat amidst the tight horns and Tony's emphatic vocal delivery. Complete with a poster, this is a really special reissue.

  1. Shakala (8:39)
  2. Los Bareteros (6:02)
  3. El Cateter (5:38)
Review: Given their deep-rooted knowledge of the re-edit scene, it was probably only a matter of time before the Razor 'N' Tape crew turned their attention to Colombian scalpel fiends Felipe Gordon & Vagabundo Club Social. This outing on Aaron Dae and JKriv's imprint could well be the South Americans' finest work to date. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Shakala", a gently tooled-up and dubbed-out revision of a dusty, tropical disco-funk treat rich in Fela Kuti style Afrobeat grooves, rising horns and flanged guitar riffs. That said, we've also got a lot of love for the fiery horns, bustling rhythms and warm bass of "Los Bareteros" (a revision of a well known, boogaloo-era Afro-Latin jazz dancefloor classic), as well as the similarly minded - but altogether heavier - "El Cateter".

Patrick Gibin aka TwICE Edits (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: RNT 035. Rel: 11 Apr 18
  1. Sunrise (6:17)
  2. Searching (5:38)
  3. Take Flight (5:21)
Review: Italian Patrick Gibin is probably most known to you all for his Black Aroma re-edit series, and is also the resident DJ and artistic director of ROOTS Corte Radisi in Verona, Italy: a seminal and unique club. His penchant for deep cuts and dusty reworks find a fitting home on Brooklyn's Razor N Tape - bringing you the most 'respectful' edits, as always. The evocative and sunkissed soul power of "Sunrise" is stretched over the A side, On the flip, "Searching" provides a handy extension of a certain soulful 70s anthem, and "Take Flights" is a well funky boogie-down joint that's looped for pleasure. Re-edits done proper.

Liquido (Marc Pinol remix) (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DISCO DIECISEIS. Rel: 25 Feb 19
  1. Liquido (Marc Pinol remix) (9:44)
  2. Liquido (9:05)
Review: "Liquido" began life as a jam between Hugo Capablanca and Oklo Gabon with sax player James Ausfahrt and percussionist Satch Hoyt in the mix. It was recorded in a sauna room above erstwhile Berlin club Stattbad, only to be rejected by a label for not being catchy enough. After 10 years languishing on a hard drive, the tune finally receives a proper airing with a remix to boot, and it's a good thing too. Marc Pinol did his remix back when he heard the original tune, and he brings the skronky live feel of the session to the foreground while running a bubbling rhythmic undercurrent underneath to lock in the dancers. The original is a more forthright affair with a punchy monosynth bassline and a distinctly New York no wave bent that should have the more open minded parties of today freaking out aplenty.

Review: Last spotted on wax together 16 years ago on New Standards, Italian kindred spirits and diggers Conte and Petrella collide once again. A culmination of many records savoured and ideas shared between the two friends, this 12" is long overdue and fizzes with fusion. "African Spirit" is focused on a rolling tribal MAW style house rhythm with Gianluca adding his signature trombone with staccato finesse while "New World Shuffle" is a much dreamier, smoky affair that sounds perfect any time between sunset and sunrise. Spiritual.

  3. Buy Freedom (6:18)
  4. OCGC (6:06)
Review: It would be fair to say that Morgan Geist's Megaprojects series is an attempt to go "back to basics". Not only are the tracks created using - in his words - "cheap drum machines and vintage synths", but also pay tribute to some of his earliest inspirations. In practice, that means doffing a cap to fluid and ear-pleasing early deep house on the glistening "Manic Cinq", pitched-down Italo-disco and bass-heavy early British techno ("Fuzzy Detail") and tactile, breakbeat-driven late '80s house (the rather wonderful "Buy Freedom"). Arguably best of all, though, is closer "OCGC", whose psychedelic acid lines, tactile synth bass and cheery synth melodies make the track sound like a cross between vintage Metro Area and Orbital's "Halcyon".

  1. Far Away (6:40)
  2. Feel Me (6:02)
  3. I Want You Slide (7:35)
  4. Talk About (7:10)
Review: Even if Russian producer Gradient Logic is found here turning out the business on Serbian label Disco Fruit, the sound on the Far Away EP comes on like a snappy fusion of Garage-ready New York proto house and laid back West Coast boogie of the highest order. It's the third vinyl release for Tonbe's label, and once more marks the serious clout behind the Eastern European operation and its closest artists. Just try grooving to the slick bass pops on "Feel Me" without being transported to an early 80s dancefloor. There's a more organic funk to lock into on "I Want You Slide", but as ever it's hard to tell where the sampling ends and the musicianship begins on this utterly natural sounding EP.

Review: Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella follow up last year's beautiful "African Spirits / New World Shuffle" with two more lavish instrumentals. "Sun Song" lives up to its name with wave after wave of heated musicianship from the belting harmonies to the light-touch keys. "Nigeria" taps deep into the source too as it drives us through the heart of Lagos with full horns and sweeping keys. Spiritual, sun-splashed and vital.

Cat: FW 004. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Blumareciano
  2. Blumareciano (San Proper remix)
  3. Begum
Review: Mehmet Aslan and Miajica represent some of the finest operators in Basel, and their Fleeting Wax label is on hand to represent what's good in the Swiss scene and beyond. On this latest release they turn to Eva Geist, who has previously been spotted on Macadam Mambo and Elestial Sound with her beautiful mix of synths and vocals, striking a chord between noirish synth pop and heads down club music. "Blumareciano" is a wonderfully seductive, slightly spooky stew of a track which San Proper then injects with his usual freaky energy to make for a more uptempo party version. Then Geist's "Begum" stretches over the B-side in a bubbling blend of delayed voices, tribal percussion and general outernational surrealism.

  3. Flash Burn (6:26)
Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.

  2. Imani River (feat Bridgette Amofah) (4:58)
  3. Infinity (feat Bridgette Amofah) (7:28)
Review: Italian Latin jazz stalwart Nicola Conte first joined forces with trombonist Gianluca Petrella way back in 2001 on the nu-jazz era "New Standards" single. The pair started working on new material in 2014 and the "Free Your Mind EP" is their third joint release since. They're in a surprisingly up-beat, club-ready mood on EP opener "Free Your Mind", where Ebo Taylor style guitars, Africa 70 organs, tasty vocal samples and Afrobeat style horn lines are underpinned by a relaxed deep house groove. Vocalist Bridgette Amofah stars on the EP's other two cuts: the percussive tribal jazz of highlight "Imani River" and epic B-side "Infinity", a superb chunk of Afro-tinged deep house that sounds like it was inspired by Kai Alce and Ron Trent records.

  2. Our Futur (Loud disco mix)
Review: Laurent Garnier began the LBS (Live Booth Sessions or Loud Bass & Samples) concept in 2010, as a means of experimenting with live techniques. The crew incorporates Garnier himself, as well as Benjamin Rippert on keyboards and Scan X on machines. The Timeless EP begins with "Jacques In The Box" delivering a full-impact slice of techno sprinkled with surging synthesisers and climbing polyphonic key strokes. The percussion seems to melt into one element as the kick drum drives this fast, hard and slightly euphoric techno jam. Loud Disco's mix of "Our Futur" will surely capture the ears of any large crowd caught in the reverie of a darkened nightclub, with a notable chord progression and sharp, saturated snare drum.

Review: Russian DJ/producer Phil Gerus has been around for a few years, but it's only in the last couple that his reputation has begun to build. This outing on Tensnake's True Romance label follows on from a fine 12" for Lumberjacks Boogie imprint, and a digital-only electrofunk exploration on Futureboogie. The real stunner is A-side "Wearing Her Black Boots Again", a thrusting, Italo-disco exploration full of dirty synth arpeggios, delay-laden percussion hits and rubbery, punk-funk bass. On the flip you'll find the sax-laden, AOR disco shuffle of "Make Time" - blessed as it is with some great blue-eyed soul vocal samples - and the sweaty, drum-machine heavy P-funk rearrangement "Detective From Kamakura".

Review: Sonar Kollektiv has done an excellent job in re-introducing the world to the cosmic disco, jazz-funk and dusty grooves of Venezuelan producer Daniel Grau. As well as last year's timely career retrospective, The Magic Sound of Daniel Grau, they've also been releasing a steady stream of contemporary reinterpretations. There's plenty of killer material on this edit-heavy fourth 12" of reworks, with Mark E's chugging, loopy version of "Combination" arguably standing out. Jacques Renault and Marcel Vogel deliver deliciously celebratory scalpel versions of "Atlantis" and "Corre Caminos", while the little-known Fajra Fantasmo turns "Con El Cielo En Tus Ojos" into a stripped-back, organic house delight.

Does The Devil Cry Tears EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VOV 11. Rel: 29 Jul 19
  1. Sing Hallelujah (5:40)
  2. The Fear Of Fear Itself (5:41)
  3. Wigwam Embargo (6:16)
  4. My Guitar Plays Itself (5:44)
Review: One for the slow-mo crew, or at least those that want their house music delivered in more of a lackadaisical, organic format, think four tracks packed with Wurlitzer-esque melodies, sun-kissed vocal hooks, classic tropical percussive accents and gospel lyric extravagance. At times positive, in other moments somewhat melancholic, the true heaviness in the kicks only really becomes apparent once you've turned the lot up. The latter providing the focal point for appropriately-titled 'Sing Hallelujah', a loose, stomping track capped with handclaps and underpinned by a timeless, acid-influenced synth line. As unashamed as it is uncompromising. The remaining three tracks are pack pared back and reflective moods 'The Fear of Fear Itself'), organ filled playfulness, and head-nodding sexiness ('My Guitar Plays Itself') in equal measures, making for a crossover package that wears its accessible soul very much on sleeve.

  1. Still Blind (5:37)
  2. Still Blind (Lauer remix) (7:11)
  3. Still Blind (Jamie Paton remix) (7:03)
  4. Still Blind (Jamie Paton dub) (5:40)
Review: Phil Gerus is a rising talent that fits right into the (Emotional) Especial mould with his sharply realised 80s bombast and dynamic electro funk production style. Treating body-popping club tracks as a vessel for heartfelt expression, these tracks have it all from Linn Drum boogie to fully capable instrumental chops, all shot through with Gerus' choice new wave vocals. Lauer hops on board for a seductive remix of "Still Blind" that ups the sensual intensity of the track while keeping the club foremost in his mind, before Jamie Paton steps up on the flip with a couple of freakier turns that dub the original out into deadly, spooky jams for more adventurous party people to get loose to.

Dub Of Times (limited 12")
Cat: OMTGFLTD 001. Rel: 24 Jan 18
  1. End Of Times (Golden dub) (8:16)
  2. End Of Times (Silver dub) (7:12)
  3. End Of Times (Drone-apella) (4:36)
Review: London based duo The Golden Filter are comprised of Australian Penelope Trappes and American Stephen Hindman - who met in New York City originally. Known staples of Optimo Music for some time, their End Of Times EP was released in late 2017 and saw the duo in top form. The track is a throbbing and hypnotic new beat jam that gives a respectful nod to the master Giorgio Moroder with its fine use of arpeggio and repetitive vintage beats beneath Trappes' seductive come hither vocal: it's pure magic! There are three versions on this 12", with the aforementioned Golden Dub, the more uptempo and straight ahead Silver Dub and the course the rather convenient Drone-apella for good measure: which includes those ethereal analogue pads and eerie trails of reverb. 2017 was a standout year for the duo who also released their well received sixth studio album Still // Alone.

G Edits #4 (12")
Cat: GEDITS 004. Rel: 18 Jul 18
  1. Eternal (8:12)
  2. Partee (6:24)
Review: The fourth volume in G Markus' ongoing G Edits series delivers some serious disco heat from start to finish. While many will enjoy the more relaxed, groovy and gently housed-up B-side, "Partee" - all walking bass, sun-kissed chord progressions, eyes-closed synth stabs, jangling guitars and soft focus blue-eyed soul vocals - it's A-side "Eternal" that undeniably hits home hardest. Heavier and sweatier with subtle deep house flourishes (think drawn-out chords and filter tricks), the edit is based on a Latin-fired disco workout that boasts spiraling orchestration, eyes-closed rock guitar solos and a big budget horn section.
