Riviera Disco Vol 2
Cat: BAP 022. Rel: 23 Apr 14
Bijou - "Twilight"
De Pin Up Club - "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep"
Peet Need - "Here Comes The Arps"
Impresa Gottardo - "Trafori"
Review: Otto Kraanen's Bordello A Parigi label are on a roll right now, with no less than ten records issued since the turn of the year! One of those was the inauguration of the Riviera Disco series, overseen by Riviera Disco Club selector Julien Tavernier, which got off to a fine internationally flavoured start earlier this month with contributions from Disco Sigaretta, Dilemma and Sauroid founder DJ Gio MC-505. Volume two looks to be just as exotic in sound and international in flavour with Belgian producer Bijou sharing space with cuts from Dutch pair De Pin Up Club and Peet Need and Impresa Gottardo, the new collaboration between Ajello's Philippe Taverio and Jean Paul Lazarre. In need of pumping italo and synth heavy disco? This 12" will satisfy those cravings and then some.

Review: By now, we're not sure how battered up this robot can get; French electro-balearic duo Breakbot are back with their first single of the year, hitting up regular collaborator Irfane for a four-track EP modeled around our own vices. Plodding downtempo and achy, breaky heart-strings are tugged as we take our daily dose of 'Remedy', while electric bossa nova and cinematic strings help us see 'The Light'. A subdued new EP spelling exciting things to come from the mainstays.

Clean Is Good - "Cristina" (6:22)
Moodena - "Cotton Club" (6:10)
Sartorial - "Ancient Aliens" (6:00)
Infrasoul - "Quanto Amor" (5:28)
Review: Collab EPs are back in fashion, and Tropical Disco are leading their charge. The boundlessly potentiated space between disco, dance and jazz is their game, and 'Tropical Disco Volume 23' proves they can win it time and time again. Four tracks of trumpetting 4x4 glory-buzz dominate this EP. Clean Is Good wipes the floor with disco-edit edge, while Moodena comes through with a mighty mood of motor city madness, and Sartorial and Infrasoul share the B-side with a pair of broken, drum-banging and glass-shattering instrumentals. There's even a disco flute in there somewhere.

Crown Prince Of Waterford - "Getting Fingered On The Waltzers" (13:19)
Island Times - "Together" (5:47)
Umberto Lumber - "Between Those Sheets" (4:54)
Review: Chubby Irish groove hounds Fatty Fatty return with another sublime funk-stacked V/A three tracker. Local lad Crown Prince Of Waterford (not to be confused with the legendary blues singer) lays down a furiously funky jam about having fun at the fairground while fellow Emerald Isle strutter Island Times returns Fatty Fatty with a loose-limbed falsetto-loaded twanger. Finally, we fly off into the Italian sunset with a stunning slow jam from Umberto Lumber. A twinkling slo-mo chugger with serious cosmic tendencies, what a way to finish an EP.

Love Comittee - "Law & Order" (Dimitri From Paris DJ Friendly Classic re-edit)

Review: This new reissue from Salsoul takes us back to the first volume of what became a vital Re-edits series from disco aficionado Dimitri From Paris. The ever-green disco don really pulled it out of the bag with these. Sure, the originals are all wellborn classics, but in his hands and with an extra sprinkling of dazzling disco dust, they become new and vital once more. The standout will always be Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Sensation' but deeper heads might before the funky bass of Inner Life's 'Moment of My Life.' There are also boogie tinged, string laced gems from Love Committee and ass-shaking synth jams from Skyy.

Fool 4 U (3:46)
Review: The dazzling Star Creature label has an impossibly feel good future retro disco-funk gem on its hands here courtesy of E Da Boss. E has been turning out killer jams for many years and this time joins forces with Ishtar for 'Fool 4U'. It has funky-ass bass slaps down low, with plenty of jazzy and cosmic keys up top and boogie grooves that make you move. The vocal is acrobatic and brings sultry soul on the E live remix. On the flip the original is a little more upright with 80s chord vamps, noodling guitar licks and the vocal still bring the soul. Two gorgeous cuts for cosy dancefloor vibes.

Cat: SCR 704. Rel: 04 May 22
I Wonna Know (Eddie C 7 Inch Disco mixx) (4:03)
Rendez-Vous (Eddie C 7 Inch Disko dubb) (4:02)
Review: Eddie C met fellow Berlin-based artist LJ Simon a couple of years back. The pair bonded over their joint love of "boogie-funk" (as Soul Clap put it) and soon the Canadian was in the studio remixing a couple of Simon's collaborations with vocalist Idriss. Now presented on this "45" as a vinyl-only release, those two mixes are well worth checking. On side A you'll find 'I Wonna Know' [sic], a delicious fusion of Soul II Soul style street soul, tactile boogie synths and grandiose orchestral disco samples topped off by a fine lead vocal. The flipside dub of 'Rendez-Vous' is arguably even better - a jaunty boogie-reggae affair piled high with colourful synth sounds, echoing vocal snippets and toe-tapping beats.

Ex Friendly - "Love Is Not Lost"
Peza - "Do You Have Any"
Panorama - "Don't You Know That"
Inkswel - "Like That" (feat Suzi Analogue)
Review: With his Midnight Riot compilations, Yam Who has proved to be a shrewd mover. By focusing largely on the edits-not-edits sound - where disco and electrofunk meets deep house - he's managed to catch the zeitgeist of a scene that remains hugely popular. This 12" culls four certified jams from last year's third Midnight Riot compilation, with Ex Friendly, Peza, Panorama and Inkswel representing the delay-laden disco dubbiness, Tiger & Woods-ish disco-house and starlight nu-boogie sound either side of the wax. Indeed it's Australia's foremost exponent of dust laden boogie Inkswel that impresses most with the Suzi Analogue featuring future funk of "Like That".

Review: An unexpected limited Viewlexx. Only 300 copies for all the Italo lovers. Viewlexx delivers some raw and unique recordings from the live performance of Fred Ventura with Alden Tyrell & I-F. They reworked some old Fred Ventura tracks and played it on a CBS party in Rotterdam and on the Lowlands festival in 2005. This is a recording of that hot steamy night in Rotterdam with great Italo disco classics such as "Body Heat", "Streets All right", "You'll Never Change No More" and "Wind Of Change". Glenn Underground - "Spiritually Captured"
Isoul8 - "How I Feel" (feat Kaidi Tatham)
Isoul8 & Ricardo Miranda - "P Boogie"
Review: Heralding a quarter century of service for one of Italy's best-loved record stores, three certifiable house troubadours join forces to offer up tracks of the finest calibre, not least if you love old-school flavoured Chicago house music. Glenn Underground is up first with the Latino-tinged roller "Spiritually Captured", all charming chords and lightly drummed percussion. Isoul8 brings a more gutsy kind of acid house that both punches in the bottom end and bubbles delightfully on top before joining up with Ricardo Miranda for the sublime "P Boogie". Combining heartbreaking arpeggiated twinkles with expressive bass and luxuriant pads, a truly spellbinding track is crafted, and it's certainly not one to miss out on.

Gredits - "Doin' It Deep"
Elef - "Lazy Liz"
The Candy Dealers - "Time Machine"
Illyus - "Movin' House"
Review: Volume Six of the esteemed Sccucci Manucci operation sees the Tom Selleck of disco-flecked house rack up the air miles with an international cast of talent contributing. Contemporary disco connoisseurs should be fully aware of Gredits, the Swedish producer with previous on the Basic Fingers label; "Doing It Deep" does it right, seductively teasing out a killer looped up disco groove that gets more flirtatious with every listen. German dwelling Greek producer Elef takes us into classicist house terrain with the infectious bump and shuffle of "Lazy Liz", whilst a long promised Sccucci weapon from The Candy Dealers (aka Christian Malloni & Jay West finally sees release on the flip. Review: Refreshingly good tribute re-rubs and mash-up work from some rather large producers keeping quiet for now. These mixes have been doing the damage in clubland for a long while but have only just become available on vinyl. We have managed to sneak a few copies but be quick because they won't be around for long. A side is a well crafted mix of Thriller, "Special" by Sir James mashed in with "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones with outstanding results already proven to rock any floor. The B side meanwhile is "Stand" by Sly and The Family Stone with Charles Manson's eerie vocals chopped in and out and also delivers killer results every time.

Review: Following great releases by the likes of The Rickie Clark Company, Lord Funk & DJ Moar, here is French label Boogie Butt's latest mainstream '80s funk project pressed as a limited edition on 7'. They are pleased to introduce the talented Ella May, who the label is currently working on forthcoming projects with, and who has a grasp on funk, soul and jazz. Magnetic Field (Walter Jones remix)
Review: Our ears continue to be dazzled by Slovenian disco type Ichisan who makes an appearance on the ever great Under The Shade imprint after two great EPs on Solardisco and Airtight last year. "Magnetic Field" is a fine slice of soaring cosmic delight with a gentle chugging bass line propelling the floor friendly groove. Ichisan opts for a more electro boogie feel on "Rear Window," a slap bass odyssey with some exceptional synth stab action. Two masterful remixes round off a typically fine Under The Shade release. The Off Key Hat gets tweaked out on acid on their take of "Magnetic Field" whereas DFA dude Walter Jones goes for the deep chug with glorious dubbed out synths.

All equally velvet, "Hotel Jama" feels even more welcoming with its glistening strings, "Modri Tunel" is all about the deep dubby dynamics while "Kozmetika" while have you hot shoe shuffling quicker than you can say vibraphone. Review: Slovenian disco demon Ichisan continues his rich vein of form with three slices of instant cosmic. "Fantazija" is the perfect ice breaker. Thumping like an Idjut Boys track, twinkling like a Kirk Degiorgio tune, it guarantees sweaty participation. "Mambo" is a much groovier affair. Bona fide deep house with a shimmering air, it wouldn't have gone amiss on a Julien Jabre record. Finally we hit "Novi Svet". The sunset cut of the bunch, loaded with glistening nylon strings and spacy arpeggios, it's a Balearic bomb waiting to melt hearts and minds when played at the right time.

Review: Cosmic Pint Glass, a Norwich imprint with the best label name ever, now tap Slovenian duo Ichisan & Nakova for some truly adorable nu disco goodness on the "Princesa EP. The title track's electronic piano solo above a funky bass and a cheesy yet infectious arpeggio totally rules! But it's the Ruf Dug remix which really gets a groove on, with the addition of those 80's FM synth xylophone presets: nice touch. The Jonathan Krisp remix of "MRK" is a smooth and emotive groove with some razor sharp synths and bleepy bass. Nice one!

Born to Berber parents in Morocco, Ideddir began making music at the age of 10 after being discovered singing in the stairwell by his school's headmaster. Encouraged by his peers, he began playing concerts, and his status grew. In 1987, he played a string of sold-out concerts in Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh, in support of a children's charity. Review: Les Boys Idjuts resurface after an extended bout of disco silence with this rather dashing World 1st Day seven inch on Japanese label Altzmuzica. Despite Conrad McDonnell and Dan Tyler's sizeable discography, we'd wager this is their debut appearance on the dinked format as Idjut Boys, but they wear it well with "World 1st Day" a heavily psychedelic disco dub production that's blessed by some sublime guitar and bass work from unofficial third Idjut Boy Andy Hopkins. On the flip Altzmuzica boss Altz gets to repay a long held favour and remixes the track, adding some killer delayed drum edits to give the track a dancefloor boost.

Review: Few producers are quite as capable of 'versioning' - that's delivering multiple mixes based on the same core musical ingredients - their own tracks as the Idjut Boys, whose love of drums, bass and trippy effects has long been rooted in their love of dub culture. 'Dumme Willie', their latest EP, is a fine example of this approach and features four variations on a throbbing, arpeggio bass-driven groove. The title track -a kind of extra-psychedelic riff on Rinder & Lewis's cover of 'Willie and the Hand Jive' - comes accompanied by a stripped-back, delay-laden percussion dub (the 'Drum Mix'), the similarly wonky but more fully-formed 'Schlagstock' (don't let he name fool you - it's another mix of 'Dumme Willie'), and the crowning glory, a superbly spaced-out drum dub that's as wild as it is heavy (the 'Vacant Gaze' version).

Review: Having served up a series of scintillating re-edits from Chicago legend Rahaan (amongst others), Hot Biscuit Recordings has now turned to the undisputed masters of the dubbed-out disco edit, the Idjut Boys. Naturally, the long-serving duo are on form from the word go, chopping up and lightly dubbing out an old dancefloor jazz-funk jam from Lonnie Liston Smith ('Lonnie's Lifting'), before raising the hands skywards with a quick blast of a gospel-fired Sylvester anthem ('I Need U (Reprise)'). On the second slab of wax, they get deep, dreamy, Balearic and saucer-eyed (the fabulous 'Without A Care'), smother a pitched-down electrofunk jam in oodles of space echo ('Tonight (Dub)') and tease out a Latin-flecked disco gem in typically delay-laden fashion. A genuinely killer collection of tried-and-tested re-edits.

Review: International Feel is back with its second Studio release, a two track EP that includes a re-imagination of seminal krautrock outfit Popul Vuh's score for the Werner Herzog film Aguirre, The Wrath of God. Conceived and produced at International Feel HQ, the release contains contributions from Richard Hawley's band - apparently conducted via a Skype session. "Morgengruss III" pays homage to "Morgengruss II", a track made in 1972 by Popul Vuh, the Munich based collective formed by the late, great Florian Fricke. Second track "Watching Stars Over The Rubicon Beltway" is billed as the "4am companion" to its A-Side predecessor. Awesome stuff, as per usual.

Review: Concentrated Nigerian disco from 1980: I.G's only album Bomp fetches triple figures without so much as a second thought. Listen to these two limited, loud-pressed album highlights and you'll understand why. Galvanised by I.G's distinctive falsetto, "Disco Power" pays homage to the sound of New York while retaining a tight sense of Afro rhythm and highlife sparkled guitars. "Funk Ina Ghetto" is equally alluring. With I.G taking a more spoken word approach, it comes on strong like a Donny Hathaway joint - all dramatic and dynamic. Powerful.

Review: The fourth release on Ed DMX's dinky sevens imprint Fresh Up sees mystery duo Ike & Mike drop a delightful ode to Chic Corea's sartorial endeavours with "White Chinos" composed in honour of the legendary jazz fusionist's appearance on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Should he ever hear it, Corea would definitely approve of the loose Rhodes flourishes and taut guitar funk that run amok a heavy groove of primitive drums and cheap Moroder bassline. You've got to love how it fades out just as some crazy moog styles appear. Check the flip for the tongue-in-cheek MOR glockenspiel lead instro disco shuffle of "Turn This Love Around"!

Formed of Simon Says and Florent, Il Est Vilaine arrive on KTDJ following a breakout 12" for Dialect last year and the three productions on Lumiere Noire offer a diversity in sound that you expect from Ivan Smagghe and Thevenin's label. Lead track "Surf Rider" is a wave-infused acid builder that's already got the Pachanga Boys seal of approval whilst "Lies" sounds like a prime Smagghe set opener. Review: oooh super hot one from TIL!!! Truth is Light keeps charging along with what could be their most dynamic release yet. Still obscure but rather less obtuse than previous outings! Limited quantities again.
The label shout " A four track 12" beast that includes a huge gospel cover of Sylvesters already smash underground disco hit "I need you". If this doesn't turn people out,
then you should throw these records at people in the club and aim for their necks! The other mystery on here is an african disco song of equally anthem-esque qualities. The man see's a woman's body and it's so fine, he insists she spend the night with him. Where these came from, who knows but we are sure this is the best TIL release to date. Even the mostly instrumental One Step surprises with sinister synth stabs and an odd sound sculpture school opera experiment gone crazy.

What About Love (Rob Manga edit) (4:27)
Peace Of Mind (Illco edit) (3:37)
DR DJ (Mr Mendel edit) (6:45)
Review: More deviant Dutch disco funk as three of The Netherlands finest share some time on the Sunshine Sound imprint. Rob Manga takes us deep into the sleaze with a low-swung groove that loops right down into the gutter. Illco flips the vibe and cleanses our soul with the more spiritual Sun Ra style "Peace Of Mind". Finally Mr Mendel keeps us up all night with his salacious boogie funk twist with Candido inspired results - watch out for the drums midway. Wow.

One More Night Of Love
One More Night Of Love (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: IMAADD 41. Rel: 28 Apr 21
One More Night Of Love (feat D Train) (4:43)
Casanova (feat Saskia) (4:39)
Review: This one is a real gem from American boogie-soul funk group D-Train, German vocalist Saskia and Dd Lahouve Production mainstay Imaa. It is a new cut but one that leans heavily on a classic 80s disco sound. 'One More Night Of Love' has the big vocal, the pixelated production aesthetic and a killer synth bassline as well as big chords. It's a perfect feel good disco weapon then the flip side 'Casanova' roll a little deeper. There's no way your hips can't swing to this one with its rolling arrangement, lush guitar motifs and glossy disco style.

One More Night Of Love (instrumental) (5:50)
Casanova (feat Saskia - main version) (4:40)
Casanova (instrumental) (4:40)
Review: Following the reissue of that Enois Scroggins classic earlier this week, we have more proper old school vibes again on DD Lahouve Productions, this one in particular will appeal to fans of Petrus & Malavasi classics. Vocalist Imaa teams up with James Nelson Williams & Hubert Eaves III of American boogie-soul funk group D-Train on the ultra smooth 'One More Night Of Love' perfect for those long hot sexy nights. On the flip, Imaa teams up with German vocalist Saskia Debost and French producer Philippe Bouthemy aka Magoo (French Kiss) on the sensual mood music of 'Casanova'.

Hot Stuff (reissue)
Cat: MAXI 106612. Rel: 01 Mar 22
Hot Stuff (6:25)
Hot Stuff (Spasmo version - instrumental) (7:15)
Hot Stuff (Flemming Dalum remix) (6:58)
Hot Stuff (Ali Renault remix) (6:58)
Review: Italo one hit wonders Image comprised of Eimilio Turani and Pino Pischetola, the latter went on to be one of the country's acclaimed sound engineers. Their one and only release from 1984 'Hot Stuff' is an anthem for those that know, and the infectiously neon-lit gem gets a reissue here on ZYX, complete with remixes by the usual suspects. Fleming Dalum of Centre Neptune harnesses all the energy of the original yet still provides a modern reshape on his respectful rendition, while London's Ali Renault takes the track deeper into the night with his foggier perspective. Also included of course is the original B side, the Spasmo Version - Instrumental.

Just An Illusion (Lindstrom remixes)

Just An Illusion (Lindstrom dub)
Just An Illusion (Lindstrom vocal remix)
Just An Illusion (original 1982 version)
Review: 1982 was a time of bad suits, bad haircuts and Men At Work. Thankfully the music wasn't all bad, especially that coming from Imagination, a group of backing singers turned pop stars. "Just An Illusion" reached a top ten position in the UK national charts when it was originally released and has been a staple on radio stations and compilations for 25 years. But it was also a huge underground club hit in the UK before it enjoyed commercial chart success, and has been in some of the most credible record boxes ever, including the likes of Harvey and Erol Alkan. Bearing this in mind we wanted to rekindle its underground heritage by choosing a remixer away from the norm, Hans-Peter Lindstrom is anything but the norm. He was born and raised on country & western on the west coast of Norway. Now residing in Oslo, he is a multi-talented musician and over the last few years has become one of the world's hottest underground producers, making electronic music with a nerve.

Changes (reissue)
Cat: GR 1287. Rel: 25 Jan 22
Changes (Larry Levan remix) (7:41)
Changes (instrumental) (6:25)
Changes (Dimitri From Paris Is Nightdubbin' remix) (7:52)
Review: There are few synth-boogie records better than Imagination's 1982 club smash 'Changes', an impeccable chunk of soul-fired dancefloor brilliance rich in undulating synth-bass, mazy high-register solos, echo-laden piano riffs, warming chords and superb lead vocals from the effervescent Leee John. This reissue not only boasts the peerless Larry Levan remix - the finest version of the tune by far, and subtly dubby in the Paradise Garage legend's typical style - and the dub style Instrumental mix, but also Dimitri From Paris's impressive, stretched-out revision that first featured on the 2009 BBE compilation Night Dubbin. Basically, this 12" boasts all the versions you need of one of Imagination's greatest moments; should you not own them already, you really should pick up a copy.

Burnin' Up (Dimitri From Paris remixes)
Cat: JUNO 4R. Rel: 05 Nov 07
Burnin' Up (Dim's Red Bus re-dub mix)
Burnin' Up (Dim's 80's re-stretch mix)
Burnin' Up (original 1981 version)
Review: "Burnin' Up" was the B-side to the chart hit "Flashback" back in 1981, but it was "Burnin' Up" that received the DJ support, being hammered at the Paradise Garage by disco legend Larry Levan. When we told Dimitri From Paris about our 10 project, he was insistent that if he was going to remix an Imagination record that it would be this one. Dimitri needs no introduction as his love and knowledge of disco is legendary. The compilations he does are instant collector's items and his productions are a clever balance between disco and house. Here he delivers two superb mixes.
