Review: Having recently mined the post-punk/new wave vaults of Factory Records' 12" releases, it's little surprise that the latest Strut Records release shines more light on the clanking, far-sighted world of the 1980s' most revolutionary genres - namely industrial, post-punk and EBM. This time, former Output boss, Playgroup man and all-round hipster Trevor Jackson is at the helm. His two-disc selection touches on many different strands, from bleak synthesizer jams and crunchy punk-funk to twisted industrial disco, mutant electrofunk (Nitzer Ebb's "I've Lost Control") and almighty percussive workouts (SPK's thrilling "Metal Dance"). While fans of the genre will no doubt own a fair proportion of these tracks, there's enough obscurities to warrant further investigation. As a starting point for newcomers, it's superb.

Review: Gerd Jansen's first collection of autobahn-inspired "ambient-not-ambient" cuts, released back in 2012, was something of an overlooked triumph. If anything, this second volume in the series - once again packed with exclusive, never-before-heard material - is even better. There are glistening, far-sighted excursions from Leon Vynehall, Shan and Orson Wells, a brilliant chunk of shuffling dancefloor hypnotism from Joy Orbison, and some vintage, low-slung ambient fare from Dutch veteran Orlando Voorn. Meanwhile, Disco Nihilist's "Melancholy" is formidable emotive - unsurprising, given the Detroit and deep synth-pop influences - while Lauer's "Autofahrn" is a thrillingly authentic Kraftwerk tribute.

Review: It's been some four years since Norman Jay MBE's last Good Times compilation. Here he makes a welcome return with Skank & Boogie, a typically summer and soulful selection that typically joins the dots between reggae, jazz, boogie, '80s soul, disco and more besides. Opening with Saint Germain's obscure - but rather fine - reggae-jazz cover of the "Pink Panther Theme", the legendary DJ digs deep to present a near non-stop stream of groovy gems. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, with The Real Thing's smooth, UK take on Philly Soul, "Love Takes Tears", Laurel Aitken & The Gruvy Beats' undulating reggae shuffler "Kent People", and Chanson's soulful boogie anthem "Don't Hold Back" standing out.

Review: Famously, Norman Jay MBE's Good Times Sound System has been providing the essential party soundtrack at Notting Hill Carnival for as long as anyone can remember. As the years have rolled by, the legendary selector's annual tie-in compilation has become almost as essential. This year's version, Mister Saturday Night, boasts Jay's usual blend of goodtime grooves, well-known anthems and forgotten favourites, with an emphasis on funk, soul, disco, reggae, hip-hop, boogie and break-driven funk-rock. Review: You'd be forgiven for not knowing who Daniel Grau is. For starters, his 1970s and early '80s productions - a sun-kissed blend of fusion jazz, bossa-nova, simmering soul and cosmic disco - were only ever released in Venezuela. This surprise retrospective, put together by Jazzanova and Trujillo, offers an excellent introduction to his warm, immersive and summery sound. Unlike the more obviously uptempo vinyl version, this double CD mixes genuine dancefloor dynamite - see "Disco Fantasy", the hard disco-funk of "Skylab" and the deliciously stargazing "Tren Del Espacio"- with hazy songs (the brilliant "Beside Me", for starters) and tactile, downtempo instrumentals. Excitingly, the collection also includes a brand new cut, "To Night", which is Grau's first recording in over 30 years.

Review: Veteran German crew Jazzanova are the latest production outfit to curate an instalment in Stereo Deluxe's long-running Coming Home series. As with the previous editions, there's no mixing, just an enjoyable selection of tracks hand-picked for home listening by the Berlin-based six-piece. Given Jazzanova's multitude of influences, it's no surprise to find an eclectic mix of genres and artists on display, from the dewy eyed experimentalism of Arthur Russell and hip-hop soul of the Roots to Jamie Cullum's smoky jazz and Joyce's sunny samba grooves. Throw in some vintage disco (John Davis), sweet modern soul (Daz-I-Kue) and hip-hop wonk (Flying Lotus), and you have a thrillingly varied and deliciously well thought-out compilation.

Review: The new Spacetalk label gets off to a flying start thanks to this compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: For anyone with even the smallest interest in gospel music and its relationship with black American dance music, Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell's "Praise" series of mix CDs should be essential listening. Volume six, subtitled "A Prayer For Peace, Love & Wisdom", is every bit as inspired as its predecessor, with Clausell moving between traditional choral gospel music, gospel soul, and soul-jazz, deep house and disco (including Crown Heights Affair's incredible "Say A Prayer") featuring suitably righteous lyrics. To tie the whole thing together, Clausell has also included a number of inspirational and thought-provoking spoken word samples taken from recordings of preachers and black community leaders. It's a brilliant touch.

Review: Given the fashion for library music, disco noir and the synth-heavy soundtrack work of Goblin and John Carpenter, it was probably inevitable that Italians Do It Bettter would dip their toe into cinematic waters at some point. Themes From An Imaginary Film is their contribution to the oeuvre - an all-star collection of melodic synth doodles, atmospheric compositions and faux cinematic themes produced by Chromatics/Glass Candy men Jonny Jewell and Nat Walker. Its 37 tracks are, predictably, impressively evocative, variously recalling sounds and styles previously employed by notable synth composers Vangelis, Jan Hammer, Claudio Simonetti and, of course, John Carpenter.

Review: Samuel Jonathan Johnson's My Music, first released in 1978, is one of those obscure soul gems that make collectors go weak at the knees. It was Johnson's only album, something that has undoubtedly added to its mystique. Certainly, it's well regarded; original vinyl copies are fairly hard to find, and regularly fetch upwards of L50 online. This, then, is a timely reissue. It's a sublime set, flitting between stoner rock-influenced A0R soul ("Aint Easy"), heady dancefloor disco-soul (see the grandiose "You"), spiritual jazz-funk (the insatiable electronic pianos of "Sweet Love"), sugary slow jams (the saccharine "Because I Love You" and "Yesterdays & Tomorrow") and chunky, horn-toting, righteous funk ("The Reason for the Reason").

Review: A belated return to record stores for the most bonkers woman in music, as her acclaimed 2008 album Hurricane gets the re-release treatment. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this double CD set isn't the original album, which for those who missed out, is well worth a listen - but rather the second CD of dubbed versions. It sees original producer Ivor Guest revisit the tracks in a traditional dub style, emphasizing basslines, stripping back the grooves and drenching Jones' vocals in echo, delay and reverb. For the most part, it's a total overhaul that really works, recalling Jones' fruitful collaborations with Sly & Robbie at Compass Point studios in the tropical early '80s Bahamas.

Review: Studio K7’s long running mix series, DJ-Kicks, continues with an instalment from NYC disco head Juan Maclean (former hosts include the likes of Hot Chip, Booka Shade and Henrik Schwarz). Sculpted with a combination of classic tracks and more recent cuts, the mix displays a diverse collection of songs that are more focused on the club than past mixes.
Although Maclean is mostly known for his productions and live performances, he is also a DJ of some repute and his inclusion in the series is no surprise. What is somewhat intriguing, however, is his decision to make a straight up house mix. Over the running time of seventy-two minutes, Maclean keeps the energy levels high as his unleashes his collection of records meant for the club. Selecting from a rich tradition of house music with a disco twist, he includes a combination of classic tracks like Rick Wilhite’s "Get On Up" (remixed by fellow house don Theo Parrish) and recent disco cuts from the likes of Shit Robot, Still Going and 6th Borough Project.
The mix has a free flowing feel throughout due to Maclean’s raw method of producing: the whole compilation was mixed live using only two turntables, a couple of filters and a tape delay, placing the emphasis squarely on the sprit and excitement of the mix as opposed to its sound.

Review: Having offered up two previous mixes full to bursting with tongue-in-cheek New York disco classics and little-known underground anthems, this third instalment in the Horse Meat Disco series sees residents Jim, James, Luke and Severino broaden their horizons. The first disc, in particular, focuses more on recent disco scene hits, with notable re-edits from Gazeebo, Todd Terje and Leftside Wobble sitting next to contemporary productions from Mungolian Jet Set, Wild Geese and the Glimmers. Yet it's the second CD of lesser-known older nuggets - proto house, string-laden disco, wonky synth-pop etc -that really hits the spot, with a clutch of superb HMD re-edits, a dash of disco-funk and Marcel King's slept-on Hacienda classic "Reach For Love".
