  4. Seven Knives - "Wires Go Golden" (5:34)
Review: Ombra International is a Berlin based label and collective featuring artists from around the globe, sharing a mutual love for post-punk, new wave and other weird guitar and synth sounds. What's more, they're united by lust and fury and alone.. together! Commencing with the hazy and slow-burning cosmo-psychedelia of Bordeaux based enfant terribles Bagarre Perdue with "Cowboy", Sutja Gutierrez' "Great Chain Of Being" will take you deep into the exotic with its enchanting west Asian musical aesthetics. On the flip, more cosmic rock for fans of legends like Can courtesy of Frenchman Mondowski while Russian act Seven Knives channel the early '80s vibes of Neue Deutsche Welle on "Wires Go Golden".

  1. Dubplate Disco - "Pick Up" (Yam Who edit) (8:35)
  2. Motte - "Darkroom Boogie" (6:20)
Review: The first volume in the Disco Made Me Do It series features a couple of sought-after reworks that we reckon will be everywhere over the festive period. The headline attraction is undoubtedly Yam Who's A-side revision of DJ Koze anthem "Pick Up" (itself a housed-up revision of an old Melba Moore classic), which stretches out the dewy-eyed, string-drenched dancefloor bliss over eight and a half mesmerizing minutes. Motte takes over on the flip with "Darkroom Boogie", a peak-time chugger in which spacey, lo-fi synthesizer melodies and ear catching male and female vocals stretch out over a filter-sporting disco-house groove. While not quite as anthem-like as the A-side, it's a killer rework that's just crying out to be played to packed dancefloors.

  4. The Owl - "Funky Feelin" (4:12)
  5. ED Wizard & Disco Double Dee - "Slippin" (4:22)
Review: More good value goodness from the Editorial label, one of the few re-edit focused outfits that manage to retain a high level of consistency. The Funk District kicks things off with a fine re-arrangement of an organ and electric piano-focused chunk of sweaty dancefloor soul ("An Evening With El Diablo"), before Matt Hughes gets busy with some elastic slap bass on flash-fried disco-funk revision "Get Down". Elsewhere, Label regulars Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee dip the tempo on the slow and seductive "Slippin", the Owl stomps his way through the P-funk style heaviness of "Funky Feelin" and Cody Currie offers up a hazy sample-house cut rich in jazzy flourishes and warm electric piano chords.

  4. Tala AM - "Arabica" (4:40)
Review: Africa Seven's A7 edit series hits second base. Following the inaugural release from Stefano Ritteri comes JD Twitch with this almighty dancefloor suckerpunch; First up is the near-evangelistic disco boogie positivity of the 82-release "Kilowi Kilowi" from Italian / Gold Coast band M'Bamina which gets a subtle tighten and turn up from the Optimo merrymaker. Meanwhile on the B we're taken on a raw funk trip in Cameroonian cruise control as the gritty riffs and falsettos of Tala AM are celebrated in all their slinky glory before Twitch hammers up the mix with bulbous kicks and brazen rolling breakbeats. Sunnyside steamrollers; these have summer smashed all over them.

  4. Marion Javius - "Waiting In The Wings" (2:55)
  5. Neo Experience - "Human" (3:26)
Review: As with its' 12 predecessors, the latest compilation style EP from publicity-shy French diggers Unlimited Love gathers together an impressive selection of sought-after gems. This time round, many of the cuts are taken from eye-wateringly expensive and hard-to-find private press records. Check, for example, the fizzing 1982 boogie of Jeancy's "Reservation", the sweet breeziness of Karizma's "Will You Dance With Me" (an original 7" copy of which would set you back around L300) and the skewed, orchestra-smothered quirkiness of Marion Javius's "Waiting in the Wings". Elsewhere, Makonde's "Manzara" is a heavy chunk of psychedelic-minded Afro-funk, while Neo Experience's sumptuous "Human" is a lesser-known chunk of Philly soul bliss.

  1. Red Sharon - "Handle It" (JKriv RNT dub) (8:48)
  2. Marashal - "Socket Rockin" (JKriv RNT edit) (8:16)
Review: The UK's Kat is back with yet more tasteful edits of forgotten gems. From disco to house, folk to funk and balearic nuggets: these guys know the score. This time around it's over to New York City's Jason Kriveloff aka Jkriv, who works that magic razor once again on these wonderful re-edits. On the A side we've got Red Sharon (see what he did there?) with "Handle It" (JKriv RNT dub) which takes a right diggers delight into sultry, late night territory and sure to burn up any dancefloor. On the flip is Marashal (oh come on already!) with "Socket Rockin". No guesses what's going on here but just for the record: it is one funky and soul filled celebration and most of all, a respectful edit.

  2. Raw Slavs - "Born In R" (6:24)
  3. Moodena & Sartorial - "Got That Feeling" (6:07)
  4. Hotmood - "700 Copies" (6:45)
Review: Earlier in the year, Samosa Records launched the "Funk Purpose" series via a multi-artist collection of top-notch edits. Volume two will be released in several parts, with this rock solid EP the first to drop. Glaswegian scalpel fiend Al Kent kicks things off with "Where", a superb traditionalist rearrangement of a soaring, orchestrated disco-funk cut that has the potential to become a screaming, soul-fired anthem this summer. Raw Slavs opt for a loose and groovy, slightly housed-up vibe on their succulent disco re-edit, "Born In R", before the Tropical Disco Records crew takes on side B. Moodena and Sartorial's "Got That Feeling" is a bumpin' disco-house revision of a soulful disco groover, while Hotmood's "700 Copies" is a deep, bass-heavy jaunt through cowbell-laden jazz-funk/house fusion.

  4. Purple Ice - "Adeus" (7:02)
Review: According to the hype sheet we have to hand, the "Home Turf EP" is House of Disco's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. There's plenty to get the juices flowing throughout, from the bounding bounciness of LPM's rap-sampling disco-house cut "Get With It", to the impeccably warm and sun-kissed jazz-house vibes of Purple Ice's "Adeus". In between you'll find the rolling, synth-heavy warmth of Mix & Fairbanks' deliciously loved-up "Shergar's Revenge" and "Me, You, Us" by Shee, a chunky sample-house number full of swirling strings, looped guitar riffs, hazy chords and righteous spoken word samples.

  1. Never Gonna Let You Go (Theo Parrish Ugly edit) (10:04)
  2. Never Gonna Let You Go (5:10)
Review: For the best part of 17 years, Theo Parrish's legendary re-edit of Made In USA's "Never Gonna Let You Go" was available only to those willing to pay serious sums for a copy of his first "Ugly Edits" release. Thankfully De-Lite has done the admirable thing and made it available to all via this essential new edition of the 1977 jam. It allows those who've never heard Made In USA's heartfelt and surprisingly laidback original to compare the two versions, which only highlights the brilliance of Parrish's re-edit. His ten-minute take speeds up the track, adding choppy edits effects to increase energy before rolling into the most righteous and celebratory bits of the original version. In our opinion, it's one of the greatest re-edits of all time.

  5. Work Tapes (2:21)
  6. Come On Down (3:12)
Review: Since serving up a tasty debut album back in 2011, Magic In Threes has provided sporadic dose of funk-fuelled delight that variously draws influence from jazz-funk and soul. The three original tracks included on the combo's first Razor 'N' Tape reserve appearance fit this formula, layering up live horns, guitars and drums with loose and heavy results. Title track "Work Tapes" is a Blaxpolitation funk affair with subtle disco flavours, "Come On Down" is an Isaac Hayes style orchestrated disco-funk roller, and the superbly summery "Chupa Cabra" sounds like it could have been made in Brazil around 1979. All three tracks are given the remix treatment, with Patchworks' Afrobeat revision of "Work Tapes" and Fouk's hybrid jazz-funk/disco-house version of "Chupa Cabra" standing out.

Review: Hot of the blocks this year comes French curator imprint Unlimited Love. Drawing for rarities and oddities from artists whose repertoires are shockingly slim, this is their second EP in three months and, once again, it features a wide range of killer sounds from late 70s/early 80s. From Magnum's street kicking New York funk to the rich rare groove of Phyliss Bailey, it's a boogie odyssey through and through with sleazy guitar-twanging funk from Broken Glass and straight-up percussion-powered disco energy from Thunderbolt. Feel the love.

  1. Mahogany - "Ride On The Rhythm" (Michael Gray remix) (7:05)
  2. Raw Silk - "Just In Time" (Michael Gray remix) (6:25)
Review: Full Intention man Michael Gray is the latest contemporary house producer to get his hands on the parts to classic cuts from the bulging West End Records catalogue. He has opted to rework two slightly deeper early '80s jams, starting with Mahogany's 1982 boogie cut "Ride On The Rhythm". His version is warm, sparkling and bass-heavy, offering the right balance between modern production techniques and the kind of effects utilized by the track's original producers. It's really good, keeping the spirit of the original track while dragging it into the 21st century. The same could be said of his boogie-house take on Raw Silk's "Just In Time", which boasts a similar balance of tidy new drums, spruced-up synths and swirling effects.

Channelling his Afrikanz On Mars spirit, he gives her the disco treatment she deserves with lavish percussion, sweeping synths and a sleazy but slinky bassline. Complete with a Galactic Flute remix and an instrumental, Far Out have created a winning package to match their previous Theo Parrish outing earlier this year.

Review: Brand new Detroit duo Man VS Indian Man comprises Ian Finkelstein and Even Haywood. Complementing each other's strengths, the pair make the perfect match as they pour out thick viscously barbed future soul in thick gooey doses; both "Ice Accountant" and "Cloud Nine" are wrapped in foggy layers of sleepy textures as the falsetto vocals and lean instrumentation cut through with dreamy delight. Remixes from the legendary Egyptian Lover (cosmic electro), fellow Detroitian Pontchartain (filtered disco house) and Brazilian Table Daddy (lolloping dream tech).

  3. Simple Symmetry - "Yalla" (6:42)
Review: Those fine folks behind the otherworldly Multi-Culti imprint have decided to launch a re-edit series, naturally focusing on reworks of weird and wonderful, off-kilter gems from around the world. This first serving of Cult Edits naturally contains some seriously tasty and exotic fare, most notably the parping, horn-heavy shuffle of Manfredas's "Mani From The Block", a stretched-out interpretation of what appears to be a Turkish style funk weird-out. Flip to the B-side for two more heavyweight slabs of wild goodness: the low-slung, dub-fired post-punk insanity of Siaubas's "Hare Hare" rework, and the throbbing, chant-along drug-chug of Simple Symmetry's brilliant "Yalla" interpretation.

Review: Thus far, Cult Edits has proved to be one of the most interesting and intriguing rework re-edits series around, with each 12-inch offering an impressive selection of cosmic, exotic and otherworldly reworks. Volume four continues on a similar theme. Manfredas kicks things off with the dirty ragga-house pressure of "Riddim", before Thomass Jackson has his way with a far-out tribal disco chugger on EP standout "Build The Bridge". Mid-'80s electronic Afro-chug is the order of the day on Balam's "Lentombi", while Inigo Vontier's "Makata" is percussive, heavily electronic, weird and undeniably druggy. In comparison, Sano's chant-along Afro-electro number "Bantu" is positively breezy.

Review: Ray Mang's Mang Dynasty alias is next up on Bristol label Alfresco Disco, serving up the kind of bubbling disco house that sets the West Country party crew's infamous sessions alight. "Crash The Box" is speckled with psyched-out acid and an infectious bassline, giving the remixers more than enough trippy ingredients to get busy with. The Tee Mango "Revision" creates a more twitchy, dubbed out version for freakier spinners to get creative with, and then Lord Leopard amps up the funk with a remix that puts the bass at the front of the action.

Review: Italian twosome Marvin & Guy (AKA Alessandro Parlatore and Marcello Giordani) channel the spirit of the early '90s on the title track from their latest rock solid EP, which marks their first appearance on Permanent Vacation for two years. "Hint of '92" is pulsating, energetic and druggy, with delay-soaked spoken word samples and "Brown Album" era Orbital electronics rising above a trance-inducing, arpeggio-driven groove. The influence of the Hartnoll Brothers (and saucer-eyed Balearic synth-pop, for that matter) can also be heard on the breezier and more loved-up "Underspreche Remix". Over on side B, "Discoteque" is a sleazy throb-job full of jacking drum fills, buzzing synthesizer sounds and razor-sharp Italo-disco bass, while post-Italo shuffler "Colours" lives up to its title.

Review: Sammy Massamba's "Azali" originally came out in 1990. The afrobeat artist's sound is shockingly potent, fusing his roots with disco and boogie to create the stuff party dreams are made of. The song has just the necessary edge to make a classic, with the vocals leading the way through the tune beautifully. "Birika" is a slower jam, but no less bold with its keyboard brass and choice guitar solo. Aroop Roy jumps on the flip to edit "Azali", stretching out a touch and adding a little subtle drum machine jack to the beat. It's tastefully done, keeping the vibe on the original intact.

Review: You'd probably have to take out a loan to buy an original, second-hand copy of Master Force's sole single, 1979's "Hey Girl", so this dinky reissue is more than welcome. The title track is a dewy-eyed slice of two-step soul sweetness rich in Curtis Mayfield style lead vocals, glistening guitars and trumpet solos that sound like they've been lifted from an early Herb Alpert recording. Arguably better for dancefloor plays is "Don't Fight The Feeling", a Clavinet-heavy disco-funk affair that boasts some brilliant group backing vocals and heaps of authentic New York flavour.

Thankfully, the trusted bastion of reissued Italian grooves Best Records is on hand to bring the music back to the people, digging the irrepressible funk of "Nuts On Me" and "Aphrodisiac" out of the vaults and pressing it up for a new generation to get down to. This is sleazy boogie par excellence, full of liquid synth bass, steamy vocals and grooves to die for.

First their crate digging gloves to unearth Thrust, the one-off album Ohio duo McNeal & Niles recorded in 1979, then they dust off their editing gloves for two immaculate extensions. If you enjoy anything on Claremont (especially Paqua) then you'll be all over these cosmic instrumentals - notably the soft harmonies on "Summer Time" and the endless, star-gazing guitar twangs of "Punk Funk. You may recognise a few samples here, too... Madlib and Motor City Drum Ensemble are two of many who've enjoyed the fine hooks of Mc Neal & Niles.

Do I Do (remastered) (hand-numbered 12") (1 per customer)

  1. Do I Do (7:15)
  2. Do I Do (instrumental) (6:32)
Review: It's fair to say that Maurice's McGee's "Do I Do" is something of an Italo-disco classic. It was initially released back in 1983 on Full Time Records, and featured the man himself - seemingly an invented alias for a local Genova singer recruited by the prolific Studio G production team - telling a tale of missed parties and late night opportunities over a backing track that sits somewhere between the all-arpeggio grooves of Italian disco and the slick, synth-heavy warmth of '83 New York boogie. On this timely reissue, the extended vocal version (remastered to sound extra loud) is accompanied by the arguably superior Instrumental take, which wisely highlights clipped disco guitars and the superb, synth-heavy groove.

Donny's Groove (hand-stamped lilac vinyl 12")
Cat: WM 005. Rel: 09 May 18
  1. Donny's Groove (6:24)
  2. DG Redux (6:23)
  3. The Sound (4:52)
Review: The fifth offering from Warehouse Music here, an imprint brought to you by London based DJ Mella Dee. Growing up in South Yorkshire, Dee (real name Ryan Aitchison) developed early musical influences originating from the warehouse sounds of the northern region. With a respectful nod to the influence this had on him, Aitchison strives to create his own take on warehouse music with his project. Unlike the harder hitting sounds presented on previous editions, Aitchison explores the late '90s sounds of funky house on the infectious disco loops of "Donny's Groove " filtered to perfection of course, or the explosive Todd Terry tribute that is" The Sound" on the flip. Speaking of loops, he pays tribute to the Windy City master Carlos Souza on the rather 'Sneaky' and boompty tribal groove of "DG Redux".

  1. Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix) (7:59)
  2. Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix) (11:01)
Review: This release features two of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' recordings that typify the cream of Philadelphia International and Sigma Sound studios' dominance of the dancefloor - at the absolute height of their creativity and power. They were one of the most popular groups on Gamble & Huff's label, clocking up a number of hits in the mid 1970's. "Bad Luck" spent 11 weeks on the No.1 slot on Billboard's U.S. Dance chart in 1975 and has since become one of the biggest dancefloor staples ever recorded. It gets a remix by the master Tom Moulton for added club dynamics. On the flip, we have the original full version of the classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" which is also mixed to perfection by Moulton. Both are state of the art lessons in what exhilarating dance music is all about. Fully remastered on limited edition 180 gram heavyweight vinyl.
