Serie Noire #1
Cat: SN 101. Rel: 15 Dec 23
David Body - "Free Gluten" (5:22)
Facets - "Waves" (5:17)
Neurotiker - "BDSM" (Vocoder version) (5:51)
Signal St - "Tiger" (9:03)
Silicodisco - "Mirror Constellation" (6:30)
Review: Long-serving French label Skylax has inaugurated 'Serie Noire', a new sub-label dedicated to delivering a mix of 'dark disco', indie-dance and Italo-disco flavours. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on the series' debut release, a multi-artist affair that's packed to the rafters with high-grade material. David Body steps up first with the crystalline melodies and throbbing high-energy grooves of 'Free Gluten', before Facets throw down the muscular and moody 'Waves' and Neurotiker doffs a cap to EBM and Kraftwerk on 'BDSM (Vocoder Version)'. Over on side B, Signal Street's Bobby Orlando-on-steroids style 'Tiger' is followed by the throbbing joy of Silicodisco's Italo-disco-inspired 'Mirror Constellation'.

Camomilla - "Queen Of The Night"
Noa-Noa - "Harry O"
De Dion - "Sexy Cola" (extended version)
Sandy Samuel - "I Like Sado Music"
Review: Mondo Groove is one of the leading purveys or disco, Italo and nu-disco and it has been for ages. This new and limited 12" is packed with four hard to find gems from between the years of 1983 and 1988. They have all been taken from the original master tapes for this special reissue. Camomilla's chugging and snappy 'Queen Of The Night' opens up with a squelchy arp and heavenly melodies, Noa-Noa gets more cosmic and De Dion offers the drama and neon colour of 'Sexy Cola' with a fine extended version while Sandy Samuel's 'I Like Sado Music' is a loose limbed percussive workout.

Sun Circles (Alex Kassian remix) (8:40)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Belgian DJ and producer Gratts returns in superb Balearic fashion here with a new song he penned for his two young sons, Leo and Ziggy. 'Sun Circles' also makes the first release from new South Australia-based label Be Strong Be Free. It is dreamy house with gently breaking synth waves and majestic twinkling chords as well as some brilliantly sultry sax lines and vocals. The tune was recorded over the last year and a half in various studios with musicians such as New Zealand-born Nathan Haines, London's Mr Beale, Belgians Jasper Hautekiet, Levi Wynants and Frederik Kuhn. Berlin-based Alex Kassian remixes on the flip.

Human_Aventura - "Maritime Affairs" (1:54)
Noiro & Human_Aventura - "Monogram" (7:24)
Human_Aventura - "Coeur Pulsar" (5:42)
Review: Voodoos & Taboos unveil their anticipated new LPs series with Human Aventura, the debut self-titled album from the promising Corsican producer. An unusual dance release modelling itself on electro and chiptune, but finding itself somewhere in the hidden interstice between them, this is a self-described "libidinous Mediterranean spoken disco" album, giving elements of Telex or Kraftwerk, albeit with a progressive bent best heard on pithy cuts 'Solid State Scouter'. Not one to be missed for those who like it intelligent, fidgety and FMmy.

Ballroom Edits One (B-STOCK) (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: APRIBA 001. Rel: 29 Dec 23
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

The Apricot Ballroom crew are operating out of Sheffield and carrying the torch from the foundational work of David Mancuso's Loft parties and similarly spirited affairs like Lucky Cloud. Now they launch a label loaded with smoking hot edits that very much speak to the vibe of their parties - rich, warm 70s grooves that spring from the staple sounds of disco into cool, slick and psychedelic spheres. First up is Joi La Frique with the French flair of 'Family Rally', while Beard In Dust lays down some heavy slapping, cowbell toting funk with 'Calypso Boy'. On the flip, Nonna Fab ups the boogie mood with some nasty Moog action on 'Tension (Release Mix)' before Lancaster Bomber whips up a proto house storm with 'African Sauna'.

Jede Nacht
Life
Review: Jede Nacht is an officially licensed cover version project that comes on a limited edition 7" pressed to just 100 copies with a guaranteed 'no repress in the future' promise. For the tunes, Marco again uses his trusty hardware synthesizers, first on the rich Italo arps of 'Jede Nacht'. The German-language vocals are steamy with plenty of far-sighted chords adding the feeling that you're crying through space as they saw it in the 80s. 'Life' on the flipside is the choice cut for its tumbling drum machines and glistening keys next to melancholic leads. Glorious.

Bald Tag (3:49)
Ice Tea (3:02)
Review: Narco Marco returns to Pace In Stereo for more adventures through yesterday's tomorrow. As ever, the production is incredible, offering two tracks that pack a timeless sound informed by Italo, early electro-pop, cold and synth wave, a twin delight that somehow serves as the ideal home or headphone listen, yet is also dance floor ready and primed for proper parties. Starting on the slowest, tempo wise, 'Bald Tag' doesn't exactly owe a debt to Kraftwerk but certainly offers a place for sounds could have evolved in the back catalogue of the German pioneers. It's a weird and warbling, stepping, highly musical ride. 'Ice Tea', meanwhile, opts to get more of a stomp on, glittering harmonies painting stars in the sky above, vocals swapped out for more melodic depth.

Special Unreleased Instrumentals
Peanut (5:01)
Adventures (6:58)
Seventh (6:27)
Doctor (5:03)
Review: Last time out, back in 2021, Nassau Track Authority served up a swathe of previously unreleased instrumental mixes of songs recorded by Grace Jones at Compass Point Studios, Nassau. This 12" sees the shadowy collective once more dip into the archives of the legendary Barbados-based studio to recover more synth-laden, dub-wise disco instrumentals. They begin with 'Peanut', a Sly & Robbie-fuelled, vocal-free take on Gwen Guthrie's peerless Larry Levan fave 'Peanut Butter', before wallowing in the susp-enseful, slow motion boogie-dub brilliance of 'Adventures' (a take on an old Will Powers single). Over on side B, 'Seventh' is an infectious, musically detailed instrumental take on another Gwen Guthrie classic (the slap-bass propelled 'Seventh Heaven'), while 'Doctor' is a particularly dub-wise, slow-motion mix of what we think is a Thompson Twins classic.

Checking Out (5:22)
Checking Out (instrumental) (4:07)
Review: In 1984, Jamaican-born producer Tony Williams gifted the British jazz-funk scene with two exceptional 12" records, both now rare gems. One of these, Nat King Cool's 'Checking Out,' showcases a fusion of MFSB's 'Mysteries of the World' with quintessential UK Brit-funk vibes. Originally released on the Tai Wan label, this single remains as fresh today as it did in 1984, with its captivating flip-side instrumental. Remastered from tapes, these essential 80s Brit-funk tracks are presented on pristine vinyl, adorned with bespoke repro-labels, and packaged in a groovy Soul Jazz/Funk Masters house bag, which means it looks as good as it sounds.

Kiko Navarro & Kaleta - "Funky Man Dey Sleep" (KOKI remix instrumental) (7:09)
Review: Spanish producer Kiko Navarro has joined up with veteran Beninois vocalists and musical powerhouse Kaleta and the next level skills of The Ibibio Horns for this vibrant new 12". It's an inspired and Afro-infused groove exploration with funk, disco and acrobat all bottle dup in the beats that traverse Afria from East to West. The Ibibio Horns are on fire of course as they blaze up the sounds with their expressive horns and red hot keys while the vocals from Kaleta add further fuel to the fire. Instrumentals are also provided for more direct to dancefloor business.

Keep It Up (DJ Koco Re Edit)
Cat: AHS 70. Rel: 18 Mar 24
Keep It Up (DJ Koco Re edit) (4:05)
Stand Up (DJ Kawasaki 45 edit) (4:13)
Review: On this fresh disco 7", DJ Koco (aka. Shimokita) and DJ Kawasaki have re-edited and cut Nayutah's hit songs 'Keep It Up' and 'Stand Up' into an enduring pair of bright disco edits. Both Nayutah's original tracks really wanted us to keep it supine; Koco and Kawasaki act as commanders of this charge, not shying away from the ostensible stringy glitz of the original song. Kawasaki's edit skews funkier, employing live bass and rhythm guitar and adroit drumming to fit around Nayutah's agile, sisterly vocals, and drawing on his already extensive experience of working alongside Nayutah for her album, also called Keep It Up.

17 Daze (8:23)
It's A Deep Tune (6:20)
Tough Decision (5:15)
Just The Way (5:41)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Nenor returns to Fossils after some big releases on the mighty fine likes of Moodymann's Mahogani, Defected and Strictly Rhythm. And another fine 12" it is too, crafted from his array of vintage samplers, odd bits of music-making gear, a coveted synth collection and a mix of samples and live instrumentation. There is a mix of dusty house drums and soulful sampling to the raw opener '17 Daze', 'It's A Deep Tune' is just that with its distant bird class, jungle toms and warped bass and 'Tough Decision' brings an epic soul sample over more stripped back but compelling house drums. 'Just The Way' closes with an r&b vocal or minimal yet warm drums. The variety on this EP makes it all the more standout.

Review: Celso Valli produced, composed and arranged this classic slice of Italo disco which now gets a proper reissue job on Mondo Groove. It comes pressed up to 12" with two different versions. On the A-side is 'Skydiver' (vocal - long version) which is a Mediterranean slow burner with lush chords and loose-limed percussion. The male vocal oozes effortlessly cool as funky guitar riffs add extra bite. Flip it over and you will get 'Skydiver' (instrumental) which pairs things back to the gorgeous arrangement. A real pearler of an Italo disco gem.

So In Love (5:34)
So In Love (instrumental) (3:54)
Review: Nicci Gable was based in London and was an accomplished vocalist who worked with some top tier dance labels including Passion and Nightmare Records in the 1980s. She has some big hitters, too, with the likes of 'Strange Desire' and 'Indian Giver' but this new 12" offers up 1985's 'So In Love.' It's a lovely tune with a hooky, soulful vocal over nice proto-house drums with lush cosmic chords. Flip it over and you'll find the instrumental which brings out some of the boogie magic. Both sides are the sort of immediately floor filling tunes that make a big mark.

808 Doves (5:00)
Crystal Doves (4:44)
Review: Cheesy electro goodness from Canadian edit and remix machine Nick Bike, here indulging the humorous moniker Nicholas Bicicletta for the second of two 7" Kon editions. '808 Doves' comes through with glitzing hits, filter-freqqed lasershots, synth claves, and arpy sixteenths, all chalking up a downtown New York circa 1987 vibe. The free-as-a-bird theme is kept up with 'Crystal Doves', which concocts a sonic landscape picture of cathartic vocal gurgles and subby progressions, all against an epic collage made up of Crystal-Watery recognisance.

Vente Pa Ca (feat Jimena Angel, Jah Sazzah & Poirier - Poirier remix) (3:47)
Review: This is a global single with a great story that starts with an afro-funk groove made by Italian Jah Sazzah. He wanted a vocal for it so turned to Nickodemus who handed his own touches and then sent it Grammy-nominated Colombian vocalist Jimena Angel. The result is a vibrant Afro tune with vivid melodies. Remixer Poirier is a legend in Latin music circles. The Montreal man has formerly been associated with Ninja Tune and is synonymous with lots of classy remixes and fresh takes on a modern Afro-Caribbean sound. This is another one that reworks the ring into a more bouncy and infectious sound with gorgeous vocals and a clean arrangement that allows the drums and perc to shine.

Get Up & Down (6:09)
Moon & Night (5:43)
Review: You can't beat a good edits label and that's what we seem to have here off the evidence of the first release from NIN Edits out of Italy. Ninja Edits 1 opens with the fused charms of what sounds like sleek, proto-techno synths from Kraftwerk and disco percussion on 'Dance & Music'. 'Get Up & Down' is a deeper cut with some smoky and soulful pads and nice loose percussion that throws it back to the New York disco scene, and the most buttery and seductive of the lot comes last. 'Moon & Night' has a woozy groove and lush strings scoring high next to plenty of rich instrumental funk.

Break Down The Walls (Don Leisure Funkstrumental edit) (2:57)
Review: Emma Noble is a soulful and empowering artist with a fine vocal prowess and dynamic storytelling. Her new cut 'Break Down The Walls' on Cosmos Music has an infectious rhythm and vibrant instrumentation that seamlessly blends elements of soul, funk, and pop. Noble's compelling vocals take centre stage as she serves up a potent message of resilience and breaking free from constraints. The production is polished yet retains an organic feel, allowing the authenticity of the voice to shine and stand as a testament to Noble's artistic versatility but also a celebration of strength and self-liberation in the face of challenge.

Review: The still somewhat mysterious producer North 90 has since gone on to develop such projects as the 'Model' EP for Machine North, but this is their smashing debut: opening with the sonic rainbow-road that is 'We Prefer Fridays' before seguing into the sexual dub-Italo of 'I Wil'; then a B-side with a model rerub of 'A Guy Called' Gerald's signature acid style, before shooting a nod of backhanded but well-intentioned encouragement our way with the flippy, dreamatic 'Good Start'.

We Can't Live Like This Anymore (7:31)
Review: Originally recorded in the late 1970s and using many of the musicians employed by Diana Ross on her track 'The Boss'. 'Can't Put No Price On Love' has long been regarded as North End's 'long lost' single - an inspired disco workout employing that pre-dates the Arthur Baker/Tony Carbone-helmed project's most famous song, Tee Scott/Larry Levan favourite 'Happy Days'. The original multitrack was unfortunately lost, but the track finally appears, 40-odd years after it was recorded. Whether what we're hearing was finished and mixed at the time is uncertain, but the 'Club Mix' is certainly authentic sounding - a genuinely energetic, joyous and effervescent New York disco number with full orchestration, addictive vocals (Jocelyn Brown & Dennis Collins on backing Vox) and a killer groove. Elsewhere across the EP, we get two versions of 'We Can't Live Like This Anymore' - the synth-laden, solo-heavy disco-boogie style original mix (B2) and a superb 'drum break' percussion tool (A2) - and a brilliantly low-slung instrumental dub-disco cover of The Temptations' 'Cloud 9'.

For his latest tune he has worked with UK chart-topper Duke Dumont on a single, 'Something On My Mind' which melts nostalgic disco goodness with fresh and contemporary production. Review: Ultimo Tango are feeling the current trance-powered moment with this killer VA split release, which opens in style with the proto-typical 1990 throbber 'That's The Choice' from Italian duo Q Words. Needle originally released the A2 track 'I.J.O.' in 1994, when the trance sound was more firmly established, but that doesn't stop this highly-desired track from happily skipping between house-minded uplift, technoid exploration as well as trancey immersion. F*O*X released 'Once More' in 1993 - another one-shot project lovingly gathered up and revived on this essential record for any Italo-trance devotees looking to avoid monumental secondhand prices.

Review: American DJ and producer Nickodemus commands an eclectic and global sound, mixing EDM with organic instrumentation and vocals through a cross-cultural musical lens. Coming to his very own Wonderwheel Recordings, Soul & Science is a befitting name thanks to the seeming fusion of electronically-programmed dance beats and regional organics, but this is also one of those albums that could also potentially shatter the hard border between the two connotations. Vocal contributors and instrumentalists from Sudan (Alsarah), Cameroon (Pat Kalla), the Caribbean (Hector "Tempo" Alomar) and Cuba (Quantic) make for a floor-shakingly diverse and humanist appreciation of the collective dance-spirit.
