The Very Polish Cut Outs Sampler Vol 10
Cat: TVPC 018. Rel: 23 Apr 24
Benncart House Bootleg - "Oko Za Oko"
Zenit - "Dzisiaj/Jutro"
Rodas - "Za Czym?"
Niko Deep House Wersja - "Na Jezykach"
Powrotna Bossa Nova (Titlez edit)
Boryn - "Byles Ze Mna"
Expo 2000 - "Fantazja"
Review: The Very Polish Cut-Outs Sampler series continues to represent the party-focused arm of one of the most switched-on labels in Polish house music. On the tenth volume of the edit series we get no less than seven upfront joint to sink our teeth into, as Justyna S dices up dusty drums and funky guitar licks for the seriously infectious 'Oka Za Oko' and Zenit brings some big-room disco sass to bear on 'Dzisiaj Jutro'. The flip side sidles into deeper territory with the low-slung delights of Niko's smoky version of 'Na Jezykach' by Ka-ya-h. By the time we reach the final track - EXPO 2000's dreamy downtempo joint 'Fantazja', the pitch has slid down even lower and we're positively kicking back in the backroom with distinctive styles unique to this most esteemed of labels.

Italo Disco Donna II
Italo Disco Donna II (limited 12")
Cat: MGLP 119. Rel: 14 Sep 23
Camomilla - "Queen Of The Night"
Noa-Noa - "Harry O"
De Dion - "Sexy Cola" (extended version)
Sandy Samuel - "I Like Sado Music"
Review: Mondo Groove is one of the leading purveys or disco, Italo and nu-disco and it has been for ages. This new and limited 12" is packed with four hard to find gems from between the years of 1983 and 1988. They have all been taken from the original master tapes for this special reissue. Camomilla's chugging and snappy 'Queen Of The Night' opens up with a squelchy arp and heavenly melodies, Noa-Noa gets more cosmic and De Dion offers the drama and neon colour of 'Sexy Cola' with a fine extended version while Sandy Samuel's 'I Like Sado Music' is a loose limbed percussive workout.

Fouk - "Lefty's Bar" (Brame & Hamo remix) (6:09)
Brame & Hamo - "Hotshot" (Fouk remix) (5:09)
Nachtbraker - "You're Out Of Your Element" (Detroit Swindle remix) (7:02)
Detroit Swindle - "Alright We'll Be" (M Ono remix) (7:17)
M Ono - "Delaware State Route" (Nachtbraker remix) (6:10)
Review: Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings serve up a bunch of sweet remixes for proper house heads. Irish lads Brame & Hamo remix Fouk's "Lefty's Bar", its a sweet slice of slow-mo house that's worth a listen. Fouk then returns the favour, remixing their track "Hotshot", giving it a sleazy deep funk flavour that's unashamedly indebted to KDJ. On the flip are label head honchos Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets giving Nachtbraker's "You'e Out Of Your Element" a deep trippy tech house makeover that's perfect to use as your pre-peak time track. Oh, their track "Alright We'll Be" gets a sultry and adrenalised rework by Leipzig's M.ono. The confusion all ends in spectacular fashion with Maurits Verwoerd aka Nachtbraker's turn at a remix. He gives M.ono's "Delaware State Route" a tracky and percussive house remodel that could have equally been at home on Sascha Dive's Deep Vibes imprint.

Ballroom Edits One (B-STOCK)
Ballroom Edits One (B-STOCK) (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: APRIBA 001. Rel: 29 Dec 23
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

The Apricot Ballroom crew are operating out of Sheffield and carrying the torch from the foundational work of David Mancuso's Loft parties and similarly spirited affairs like Lucky Cloud. Now they launch a label loaded with smoking hot edits that very much speak to the vibe of their parties - rich, warm 70s grooves that spring from the staple sounds of disco into cool, slick and psychedelic spheres. First up is Joi La Frique with the French flair of 'Family Rally', while Beard In Dust lays down some heavy slapping, cowbell toting funk with 'Calypso Boy'. On the flip, Nonna Fab ups the boogie mood with some nasty Moog action on 'Tension (Release Mix)' before Lancaster Bomber whips up a proto house storm with 'African Sauna'.

Togo Soul 70: Edits & Rarities
Yta Jourias - "Adome Nyueto" (Bosq rework) (8:10)
Roger Damawuzan - "Loxo Nye" (Pushin Wood remix) (5:39)
Napo De Mi Amor - "Cacatchoule "Berceuse Bassari"" (3:04)
Sewavi Jacintho - "Miade Dua" (5:35)
Review: Hot Casa's latest must-have release is a veritable smorgasbord of Togolese treats. It focuses specifically on obscure soul music made in Togo in the 1970s, with two hard-to-find original cuts being joined by two contemporary re-edits of similarly obscure classics. The EP opens with Bosq's smooth, dancefloor-focused tweal of Yta Jourias's breezy, horn-heavy tropical soul workout "Adome Nyueto", before Pushin Wood takes over and adds a little contemporary electronic bounce - and some particularly colourful synths - to Roger Damawuzan's "Loxo Nye". Over on side B, Napo De Mi Amor's "Cacatchoule Berceuse Bassari" is a fuzzy soul shuffler rich in bright, Juju style guitar solos, hazy vocals and Hammond organ stabs, while Sewavi Jacintho's "Miade Dua" is a sweatier and heavier concoction powered by loose-limbed drumming and sun-kissed instrumentation.

Special Unreleased Instrumentals
Peanut (5:01)
Adventures (6:58)
Seventh (6:27)
Doctor (5:03)
Review: Last time out, back in 2021, Nassau Track Authority served up a swathe of previously unreleased instrumental mixes of songs recorded by Grace Jones at Compass Point Studios, Nassau. This 12" sees the shadowy collective once more dip into the archives of the legendary Barbados-based studio to recover more synth-laden, dub-wise disco instrumentals. They begin with 'Peanut', a Sly & Robbie-fuelled, vocal-free take on Gwen Guthrie's peerless Larry Levan fave 'Peanut Butter', before wallowing in the susp-enseful, slow motion boogie-dub brilliance of 'Adventures' (a take on an old Will Powers single). Over on side B, 'Seventh' is an infectious, musically detailed instrumental take on another Gwen Guthrie classic (the slap-bass propelled 'Seventh Heaven'), while 'Doctor' is a particularly dub-wise, slow-motion mix of what we think is a Thompson Twins classic.

Review: Nautilus is the Japanese jazz trio from Tokyo that has been causing a fine storm with their funk and hip hop fusions. Toshiyuki "Toshi" Sasaki, bassist Shigeki Umezawa and keyboardist Mariko Nakabayashi make up the crew and to date they have covered the likes of Beastie Boys, Bill Withers, DJ Shadow and De La Soul. This time out it is the seminal 'Expansions' from Lonnie Liston Smith to which they turn their attention. Their version is epic, with warming Rhodes chords, skyward grooves and vocoder vocals all working you into a lather. On the flip, the legendary Ryuhei The Man serves up one of his fine re-edits.

Alagarta (3:58)
Review: Fresh off impressing with the fine double drop on Charles Drakeford's emergent From The Depths label, Portuguese trio Niagara land back on home turf with an excellent new 12" for Lisbon crew Principe. Formed of Sara Eckerson and brotherly pair Antonio and Alberto Arruda, the Loures-based Niagara bring a sense of organic unpredictability to Principe, with almost every element of the music on impar performed live. There's a great diversity to their sound too, with the rush inducing house vibrancy of opener "Arruda" complemented by the low slung "Abacaxi Limao" which is essentially an Iberian take on Weatherall-style dub disco. On the flip "Legume" wouldn't sound out of place in a Mood Hut DJ set, whilst "Cheetah" impresses thanks to the deep sub bass, glistening keys and bristling hi hats. A superb 12".

Review: Drina J Nitram Zeus returns for a second release on The Sleepers label out of Italy and it is another fresh bit of hip hop. A fine purveyor of modern dance floor funk, he has had big success with recent tunes like 'Rock Wit' U' (feat. Mishell Ivon) and 'Automatic' (feat. Drina J. He mixes up fresh synth bounce with contemporary boogie styles and even a hint of deep house. The moody pads finished the Zealand make this a warm and welcome offering once more. This one is on pink vinyl 45rpm and heavily limited at just 150 copies, so move quickly on it.

F*O*X - "Once More" (Ambience mix) (4:30)
Review: Ultimo Tango are feeling the current trance-powered moment with this killer VA split release, which opens in style with the proto-typical 1990 throbber 'That's The Choice' from Italian duo Q Words. Needle originally released the A2 track 'I.J.O.' in 1994, when the trance sound was more firmly established, but that doesn't stop this highly-desired track from happily skipping between house-minded uplift, technoid exploration as well as trancey immersion. F*O*X released 'Once More' in 1993 - another one-shot project lovingly gathered up and revived on this essential record for any Italo-trance devotees looking to avoid monumental secondhand prices.

The combination of Chicago house originator Chez Damier, Adeen label head Camille and Italian talent Nico Lahs is a dream team indeed and they serve up some crucial edits that cover a wide sonic range. There are standout cuts on the first 12" such as 'Dance to Freedom' and 'African Bump' while jazzy grooves define 'Sunny' and 'Changes' is all about getting that dance floor vibing. This is another in-the-know musical voyage from this crew that more that deserves a spot on your shelves.

Recorded together sometime in 2007, the album was pressed by cult NY label Whatever We Want but never properly released with a smattering making it onto the shelves of record shops and now listed at high price on Discogs. Kudos to Stuart Leath's Emotional Response and Bullock's STD for teaming up to release the album as it was intended, under the initial name The Naturals. Expect twisted, psychedelic pop music to sooth the soul.

Review: Surprisingly, Produced With Love is Dave Lee's first album of original productions under the Joey Negro alias for nearly 20 years. Predictably, it's a fine set, as you'll discover by checking the clips of CD1. This time round, Lee has wisely chosen to indulge his disco and boogie influences, delivering tracks that tiptoe the fine line between stylistic authenticity and the feel-good house music he's long been known for. Highlights include a new disco version of classic Diane Charlamagne hook-up "Must Be The Music", the Arthur Russell inspired "Distorting Space & Time" and a fine, electrofunk style cover of Kraftwerk's "It's More Fun To Compute". Disc two boasts a swathe of bonus material, including a string of sublime remixes and Lee's superb productions for Peven Everett and Alex Mills.

Review: We've been waiting over 20 years for this one... The second ever Joey Negro album Dave Lee has given the world is a bonafide good times bomb that's saturated in raw funk soul disco escapism. Heavily faced by the sadly departed Diane Charlemagne (notably on the Chic-busting opener "Prove That You're Feelin' Me" and a new twist on his disco thumper classic "Must Be The Music") and peppered with silky house grooves such as the dreamy east coast workout "Won't Let Go", the album is a love letter to the grooves that influenced Lee's earliest musical tastes and visions. With remixes of The O'Jays and the Fatback Band ripping up the finale, this really is a tastefully (and timely) delivered trip. Feel the love.

Review: Some eight years after the first volume of the Supafunkanova series got disco and boogie DJs in a spin, Joey Negro and Sean P have decided to put together a follow-up. Like the first instalment - an essential set of little-known funk jams from the disco, boogie and P-funk era - Supafunkanova Vol 2 is full of high grade, little-known material. If anything, the selections are deeper than those on the predecessor; it's unlikely that many will have previously come across the sparkling, bongo-laden synth-funk of Stimulus' "Super Stimulus", Nice & Tight Band's hustlin' disco-funk party jam "Let's Get High (On The Music)" or Brenda Harris's low-slung "Making Love Will Keep You Fit" (a throwaway piece of advice that remains as true as ever).

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Second time around for Joey Negro and Sean P's peerless collection of post-punk era New York club cuts, a compilation that proved hugely influential when it was first released way back in 2000. The track listing strangely omits one track present on the original release (the full 16-minute version of Steve Miller Band's "Macho City"), but otherwise it's a faithful reproduction. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the eccentric electrofunk of Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" and P-funk influenced strut of Material's "Over And Over", to the skittish jazz-goes-dub disco bustle of Don Cherry's "I Walk" and the low-slung percussive voodoo of Nicky Siano's "Move". The undisputed master of NYC leftfield disco, Arthur Russell, is represented via cuts from Loose Joints, Dinosaur and Indian Ocean.

Review: When Joey Negro and Sean P established the Disco Spectrum series of compilations back in 1999, few DJs were digging for disco. Almost two decades on, we're told that disco was the sound of summer 2017 (and the summer before that). The time is right, then, for this "best of", containing the finest cuts from the series' three previous volumes. This time round, the crate-digging duo has opted for a mixture of familiar favourites ("Spread Love", "Out Of My Hands (Love's Taking Over)", "Bourgie Bourgie", "Together Forever" etc.) and harder to find gems. These include Caribbean disco classic "Trinidad" by John Gibbs and the US Steel Orchestra, Blair's sumptuous "Nightlife" and Larry Levan's brilliant remix of Syreeta's synth-laden slammer "Can't Shake Your Love".
