DID 021
DID 021 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DID 021. Rel: 20 Apr 20
  1. James Curd - "The Girl Is Hot" (6:34)
  2. DJ Confit - "Yellow Day" (6:10)
  3. Nelly Wilson - "Hapenis & Pleisure" (5:51)
  4. Herb Flavor - "Para Dice" (8:39)
Review: It's been a while, but finally Dessert Island Discs is back with another batch of feel-good party cakes hot and steaming out of the oven. There's a bunch of highly skilled patisserie chefs on hand to whip up the goods, from James Curd with the ludicrously steamy acid funker "This Girl Is Hot" to DJ Confit with the heavy looping disco house of "Yellow Day". Nelly Wilson is bringing some sassy disco edit business to the B side with the utterly infectious "Hapenis & Pleisure", and then Herb Flavor seals the deal with the fierce stomp of "Para Dice". If you want four full fat treats to get people popping, you can't go wrong with this one.

Tiger Stripes (remastered)
  1. Tiger Stripes
  2. Tiger Stripes (extended version)
  3. You Can't Hold Me Down
  4. You Can't Hold Me Down (extended version)
Review: Arthur Russell and Nicky Siano... You'd donate a crucial limb to be in the studio when these were conjured, right? Expertly extended with full emphasis on the groove, Sleeping Bag have treated the heritage with the utmost respect. The guitar and horn noodles and dynamics of "Tiger Stripes" are given heaps of space to do their thing while the percussive groove takes on an even more hypnotic edge. Meanwhile on "You Can't Hold Me Down", the scratchy, unrelenting guitar rhythmic backbone remains the main focus while more attention has been paid to the drums, most notably the weightier kicks. A very respectful revisitation.

AEAEO (remastered)
AEAEO (remastered) (12" + booklet)
Cat: PROXIMA 001. Rel: 02 Oct 20
  1. AEAEO (vocal) (6:58)
  2. AEAEO (instrumental) (6:58)
  3. AEAEO (7" version) (4:24)
Review: To launch their new dusty-fingered label Proxima, Audrey Danza and Nicolas Oggier have opted to reissue Nando Litteri's 'A.E.A.E.O', a throbbing and far-sighted slab of Italo-disco/new wave fusion from 1984. It's a great choice, not least because Litteri's bold mixture of undulating synth-bass, spacey sounds, eyes-closed guitar solos, delay-laden machine drums and chiming lead lines is far more refined than many Italo-disco records made in the same period. This edition not only boasts the extended Italian vocal and instrumental versions (the latter being our pick of the pair), but also the surprisingly different and more up-beat seven-inch mix. Intriguingly, this adds an entirely different, high-register lead line not present on the club-focussed versions.

Dave Lee Presents 30 Years Of Z Records EP 4
  1. Joey Negro Vs Horse Meat Disco - "Candidate For Love" (Joey Negro Disco Blend) (6:42)
  2. Mistura - "Smile" (feat Kendra Cash - Joey Negro club mix) (7:20)
  3. Letta Mbulu - "Kilimanjaro" (The Revenge edit) (5:49)
  4. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - "The Secret Life Of Us" (The Reflex Revision) (7:13)
Review: Z Records founder Dave Lee continues to celebrate 30 years of his iconic house and disco label with an ongoing series of various artist EPs. The fourth instalment is another belter opened up by the boss himself in Disco Blend form. He serves up libidinous synths and steamy vocals that get you on your toes and then sinks into a smooth and seductive deep house mould for his remix of Mistura's 'Smile. On the flip, disco don The Revenge works his magic on a lush afro disco cut and then comes a The Reflex version of The Secret Life Of Us which has big strings and a tight rhythm section all bringing the sunshine.

Joey Negro Presents 30 Years Of Z Records EP 3
  1. Joey Negro - "Love Hangover" (Joey Negro club mix) (6:58)
  2. Opolopo - "Get On Up" (5:38)
  3. TW Funkmasters - "Love Money" (Joey Negro dubwise Revision) (7:33)
  4. Joey Negro Presents The Sunburst Band - "Far Beyond" (6:37)
Review: Following on from the bumper compilation on Z Records of all the label's greatest hist, boss man Joey Negro offers up a third volume of 12"s. He goes first with a nice loose mix of 'Love Hangover' that bumps in all the right places. Opolopo's 'Get On Up' is a dazzling cut with cosmic chords and long legged drums that move you to your core, then Joey is back with a slick dubwise version of the classic TW Funkmasters cut 'Love Money.' Last of all, 'Far Beyond' is a reflective closer with far-sighted chords and a late night glow.

Dance Your Blues Away
Dance Your Blues Away (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: CORD 7010. Rel: 04 Aug 20
  1. Dance Your Blues Away (4:15)
  2. Dance Your Blues Away (The Mighty Zaf edit) (4:32)
Review: Originally released in 1979 as a B-side to The Neville Brother's "Sweet Honey Dipper", "Dance Your Blues Away" saw Ivan go solo for the first time on this sultry modern soul jam. Laced with a plucky bass and just the right smattering of sleaze, it set the foundations for Ivan's extensive solo career. It also provides the perfect groove tools for The Mighty Zaf to work his editor craft and beef up the vibe with subtlety. Keep on dancing!
