Cult Edits 008
Cat: CULTED 008. Rel: 05 Jul 23
Mario Bianco - "Gwada" (8:47)
Tomoo Hata - "Budailion" (5:19)
Roe Deers - "Colorita" (5:15)
Radial Gaze - "Cognate Unika" (5:49)
A-Tweed & Oltrefuturo - "Fyah" (5:40)
Review: Cult Edits are specialists in pushing a certain kind of heater, working in a mode landing something between edit and original. Six producers - Mario Bianco, Tomoo Hata, Roe Deers, Radial Gaze, A Tweed and Oltrefuturo - lay down a blend of sampledelic, ecstatic, multi-tempo'd tribal moods. Channelling everything from chic Tulum rituals to the brutalism of Eastern-European underground clubs, and rounded off by doses of Italian rasta and Japanese re-imagining of Hungarian folk song, all come to the label's exquisite brand of mandala-esque vinyl.

Dave & Maurissa - "Look At The Stars" (Dave's Starshine club mix) (7:48)
Opolopo - "Looking For You" (Peter's extended Organ) (6:02)
Review: Soul meets speed garage on this new V/A EP from Z Records, blurring the lines between the genres in just the way we like it. The opening track - Grant Nelson's mix of 'Starlight' by Dave & Omar - is a euphoric, piano-laced uplifter which both sonically and lyrically urges us to reach for the sky. That's followed by the DJ Fudge production 'Everything' by Chocolate Fudge Band, featuring lots of live instrumentation and a Curtis Mayfield style vocal, while over on the flip, 'Looking For You' proves to be a deep and bouncy cut filled with soulful Motown vocal chops and an organ workout worthy of any Sunday service, over a beautifully wonky house framework.

You Can Do It (HH 2023 rework) (6:40)
You Can Do It (HH Get On The Floor mix) (6:20)
Review: Second time around for Harlem Hustlers' surging disco-house anthem, which first appeared in stores way back in 2005. This time round, the Italian duo have reworked it considerably, placing underground boogie legend Orlando Johnson's lead vocal front and centre while opting for some more organic-sounding instrumentation (the original was more sample-heavy). On their '2023 Rework' they channel the sound of Groove Culture label bosses Mickey More and Andy Tee, wrapping Johnson's vocal, tidy horns, flanged guitars and classic-sounding piano riffs around a warming bass guitar part and crunchy house drums. It's a very classy and far more authentically 'disco'-sounding track than their 2005 original. Their flip-side 'Get On The Floor' mix, meanwhile, has a smoother, more synth-heavy disco-house sound, less vocal and even more of the excellent horn sounds.

The Minimal Wave Tapes: J Rocc Edits Vol 2
Cat: STH 2295. Rel: 20 Aug 12
Felix Kubin - "Japan Japan" (J Rocc edit)
Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

Fool's Paradise Sampler Vol 1
Mark Knight, Sgt Slick, Beverly Knight - "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (5:45)
Opolopo, Jaki Graham - "Fire" (6:07)
Review: Fool's Paradise is the exciting new label from Toolroom Records' Mark Knight. Coming straight from the heart, it's a natural progression from his hugely acclaimed 2021 album release, 'Untold Business', which saw Mark go back to his roots, paying homage to the more funky, soulful, and vocal house from the 1990s from where he came. With a focus on real instrumentation and production, coupled with great songwriting, this new Toolroom sublabel will be a platform for high quality house music designed to stand the test of time. Launching the new label with a mighty bang and delivering the first in our exciting new vinyl sampler series is head honcho Mark Knight, who joins forces with his Australian Toolroom labelmate, Sgt Slick, and British Soul sensation, Beverley Knight, on a dynamite cover of Prince's 1979 classic, 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'. Respectfully transporting the song onto today's dancefloors, Mark & Sgt Slick deliver a classy uplifting soulful house production, loaded with funky guitars, warm pads and sublime key performances. Adding the icing on the cake and putting her own stamp on things, Beverley belts out one of her signature spine-tingling vocals, garnished with lush harmonies and BV's that would indeed make The Purple One proud. Completing the vinyl package is dance music stalwart, Opolopo, and British soul icon, Jaki Graham, whom together bring the dancefloor heat with their new single, 'Fire'. Powered by a potent soulful house groove from Opolopo, loaded with warm piano hooks, emotive synth melodies and a sublime popping bass hook, 'Fire' see's Jaki flaunt her electrifying vocal talents with a show-stopping performance on this irresistibly catchy song.

Fire (Neo Disco instrumental mix) (4:36)
Review: Los Charly's Orchestra sorts Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel first worked with veteran British soul singer Omar on their 2017 double A-side single "It's So/History". All involved clearly had a good time, because they've decided to repeat the exercise. "Fire" is arguably a step up, with Omar's honeyed vocals soaring above a rubbery groove, heady female backing vocals, cut-glass strings and punchy horns on the standout "Classic Disco Mix". Elsewhere, the noticeably heavier "Neo-Soulful Disco Mix" sounds like the kind of sumptuous, all-organic soulful disco-house fare we'd expect to hear from the likes of Joey Negro and Yam Who. Wisely, the duo has also included instrumental revisions of both versions. We prefer the superb vocal takes, but it's nice to have the choice.

Vibes4yoursoul - "Delicious"
Review: French label Act Of Sedition returns this week with another splendid 7' double pack. A1 is Mikeandtess with a nice edit titled 'Preacher Man' that's seriously Dusty and slo-mo as you like it, while Oldchap's 'Big At The Jazz Club' chugs along just as slowly with its locomotive and jazzy groove with rap vocals. Over on the second disc, Bully Boy gets the late night boogie-down vibes in effect on 'Central Train' followed by Vibes4yoursoul with the sunny and low slung goodness of 'Delicious'.

Sehrazat - "Sevemedim Karagozlum" (4:53)
Leb Harmony - "Feeling Love" (8:39)
Jean Musy - "Danse Dans Le Cabaret" (4:27)
Review: After two sold out first volumes, Obscure & Obsolete are back with a third instalment in their new series. It might have been a while year since the last outing but the wait was worth it as these latest edits are on fire once again. Big Foot's 'Watch Your Step' is a funky disco gem with live drumming and loose perc, then Sehrazat goes for a tighter arrangement that reaches to the stars with its big synth work. The flip-side offers steamy, loved up and intense tackle from Leb Harmony, and there is still time for the jazz licks and clipped disco funk of Jean Musy's 'Danse Dans Le Cabaret.'

Lauren (instrumental) (6:37)
Review: Techy funk As and Bs from dream trio Oden & Fatzo, who finally press their hit house bit 'Lauren' to 12" wax. This 'accidental hit' came about when the bass sample, taken from a song by indie band Men I Trust, was lifted and plonked against a slapping house beat and backing strings. The resulting tune, which exploded in popularity in 2020, was a bittersweet ode to the dance in a time when no-one could think or begin to do so. Now, the instrumental occupies the B, taking up all the funking wax space it deserves.

Rocket Launch (Panoram partial Recall version) (4:37)

Earth Polar Axis (4:25)
Review: While there's something undeniably contemporary about Odeon's seriously psychedelic "Rocket Launch" - particularly the druggy, Weatherall-pleasing arpeggio lines, wayward guitars and densely-layered feel - it also feels like a long lost cosmic rock classic; the kind of tune Daniele Baldelli would have been digging for way back at the turn of the '80s. It's hard to pin down but undeniably brilliant. Italian experimentalist Panoram delivers a superb reconstruction that abandons all dancefloor pretentions in favour of enhanced horizontal credentials, while LUCA's "Quirky Version" turns it into a full-blown space disco shuffler. Those looking for some funk-fuelled space-rock thrills should have for impressive bonus track "Earth Polar Axis".

Review: Tropical Disco marks hitting release number 20 with a brilliant four track various artists affair that offers up plenty of the colourful and cosmic disco sounds they have become so well known and loved for. Paul Older kick off with 'Nothing,' which is a rolling and trumpet laced jam to fill the floor. 'One For Frida' gets more deep and dubby, with more big horns but a flabbier and more silky groove to sink into. On the flip, it's all majestic leads and noodling solos for the twinkling disco sounds of the late night roller 'Shiva's Chant' while 'Street Jam' closes out in smooth, string laced and seductive fashion.

Review: The sixth invitation to take Deep Cover is another mystic venture into the electronic unknown. These beguiling sounds draw on wave, disco, dub, EDM, synth and even industrial with their post-punk guitar lines and soot-stained synths. The drums are mechanical yet seductive with freaky vocals on 'Galocher' bringing a weird and wonderful mix of the ancient and the futuristic. On the flip, 'In Freunde Mit' is built on a fleshy, heavy, steady bassline with dubbed out drums and FX and swirling cosmic chords next to meandering leads. Wonderfully fresh.

Watching You (5:04)
Watching You (version) (4:52)
Review: Backatcha continues to unearth and reissue Brit-Funk gold. This obscurity from Oneness, a Leicester-based roots reggae band who were persuaded to record and release a lone Brit Funk single, could well be their most potent discovery yet. 'Watching You' is typical of that era of post jazz-funk Brit-funk, with spacey synth sounds, sweet male and female vocals, clipped guitar licks and rubbery bass riding a two-step, electro-influenced groove. As was the case on the hard-to-find original 12", it comes backed by a terrific, dub-influenced 'Version' that layers up the sax and synth sounds while allowing the original groove a chance to breathe. In a word: essential!

Review: Opolopo has been serving up floor filing blends of disco, funk and soul for two decades on plenty of well regarded labels. Toolroom now invites him to serve up three brand new jams that show off his pedigree. "Sickla Side Push Shuffle" is a funk-licked, string-laced soul searcher with plenty of poolside appeal and "Aqua Lung" is a big disco roller from the Philly school. Mellifluous closer "Groovitational Waves" has some slick keys, tight bass licks and loose and authentic drums that make it feel like an OG wedge of disco gold.

This time out he finds himself on a self-released tip with X Machine which is a mash-up of James Brown. The original vocals cut through funky basslines and lots of big percussions as the loose drums rumbled on next to warming organ chords. The instrumental is a more direct to dancefloor jam.

Mount Kismet - "Prunes & Dunes" (5:29)
Review: Disco Halal is, apparently, a big fan of "perfect strangers", described in the spiel accompanying this compilation style EP as "those people you will have a short encounter with that may change your life". Some may find the music on the label's Perfect Strangers EP life changing - check, for example, the chugging, early morning disco psychedelia of The Organism's "Reflection", which sounds like it could be capable of inspiring involuntary hallucinations, or the drifting Arabic flutes, delay-laden Middle Eastern vocals and rolling hand percussion of Kincaid's superb "Tyrant". Both are intoxicating in the best possible way. Elsewhere, the woozy nu-disco/deep-house/Arabic Italo-disco fusion of Mount Kismet's exotic closer "Prunes and Dunes" is also hugely enjoyable.

Stop The War
Review: It's coming out on Best Italy, so you know you're in for a rarified treat from the dusty archives of pan European music. On this occasion the unstoppable reissue label has its disco hat on, serving up the "raw cosmic funk" of Oro, recorded in Naples and originally released in 1977. Back then, this crucial cut was confined to a short 7" edit, but Best have pulled the stops out to track down the master tapes and execute a thorough remastering job on the full-length versions, now pressed to 12" for your long-playing, disc-spinning pleasure. It's a good thing these tracks came back into circulation - they capture the best of the late 70s era in a cool, downright funky style that never gets old.

This beautiful two-tracker is no exception as he flexes from his lavish synth boogie take on the Haywood-referencing "Out To Catch" to the slower-burning stomper "Me N U" that gradually smouldering into a raw funk groove fire with Booker T-style results. Review: Since first appearing back in 2011, DJ Osmose's Smokecloud Records has developed into one of the more reliable sources of pitched down, dubbed-out disco reworks. The label's Bedroom Disco series - so called, we suspect, because the edits tend towards the seductive and sensual - launched in 2014, and here returns for the first time since. There's much to admire, from the beatdown disco shuffle of Osmose's "Solid Game" and the rubbery, slo-mo disco-funk shuffle of The Silver Rider's hypnotic "Luv Ur Lyfe", and Osmose's delay and filter heavy AOR disco re-shape, "Stone Dance". Best of all, though, is Osmose's remix of King Most's "Fiesta Forever", a deliciously Balearic, glassy-eyed re-imagining of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long".

Review: Beatdown disco rework specialists Smokecloud have assembled a crack team of troops for their latest salvo into no-man's-land. Leading the charge and lobbing the first "Disco Grenade" is label chief Osmose, who contributes two tight cuts: loopy, filter-sporting disco chugger "Disco Luv" - a study in ear-pleasing, head-nodding hypnotism rich in musical positivity - and the more up-beat disco-funk thrust of flipside opener "U Promised Me", which sees him make merry with a cheery AOR disco favourite. Elsewhere, Oldchap delivers the obligatory slo-mo disco flier - think 98BPM beats, rising backing vocals, disco-rock grooves and jaunty Rhodes stabs - while The Funk District's "A Gangster Film" is a Blaxploitation-inspired bouncy disco-house treat.

Review: We've got some of that naughty and irresistible white label madness here from new and mysterious label and production outfit Outtaface. It comes with a label that references the energetic cartoon stylings of the late Keith Haring and a bassline that will melt your face. The 'Vocal' track mixes up disco, skank, rave, The Prodigy references and outer space designs into a truly unusual blend that will bring colour and craziness to the floor. The flip side dub slows it down, fleshes out the low and and allows the cosmic synth work more room to shine. A handy 12" for sure.

Se Te Va (4:47)
Review: Australian Latin combo OYOBI step up here with a fantastic remake of the stone could Gamble & Huff classic 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head'. Commissioned by Groovescooter for its 45 imprint, it's got twinkling late night chords and plenty of Latin percussion, xylophone sounds and that soaring vocals to melt your heart. On the B-side is an original Oyobi cut that heads to the dance floor on busy rhythm section work and starry-eyed chords. Both are essential little gems.

Make Me Believe In You (acappella) (4:00)
Review: Oyobi is an Australian trio based in Sydney that creates polyrhythmic music using electronic machines and analogue synths with live instrumentation. Their latest offering is the soulful disco house energy of 'Make Me Believe In You' featuring vocals by Karen Lee Andrews who was a finalist on the second season of television show The Voice in 2013. Over on the flip is a handy acapella.

Ozerbey - "Mihrimah" (Erguder Abi Ozur Dilerim edit) (4:47)
FOC Edits - "Demdir Dem Bu Dem" (4:18)
FOC Edits - "Neredesin" (4:49)
Review: The masters of the Turkish disco edit are back! This time round, you'll find two previously unheralded rework merchants at the controls. Ozerbey handles the A-side, delivering a wonderfully evocative, hypnotic and occasional chugging re-edit of an obscure Turkish disco treat full of sweeping strings, crunchy Clavinet lines and clipped, Nile Rodgers style guitars. On the B-side, you'll find two superb cut-and-splice jobs from Turkish cosmic disco specialist FOC Edits. First he serves up the meandering Persian electric piano solos, mazy synthesizer lines and low-slung grooves of "Demdir Dem Bu Dem", before playing around with percussion on the denser, rolling late night sleaze of EP highlight "Neredesign". The track's combination of killer disco drum breaks and half sung/half-spoken vocals is particularly alluring.

Skateboard - "Sequence" (Prins Thomas edit)
Oyvind Morken - "En Navneles Jaevel"
Prins Thomas - "Alpha Tanga Lama"
Jarle Brathen - "Track 4" (Omar V remix)
Review: Way back in 2005, Prins Thomas called upon Todd Terje to launch his own Full Pupp label, an offshoot of Bear Entertainment and since then the label has provided a constant stream of Norwegian disco from the likes of Diskjokke, Blackbelt Andersen, Marius Vareid and of course Prins Thomas. To celebrate a decade of releasing records the Nordic outpost deliver a four-part vinyl sampler series (and separate CD version) with focus on talents from Norway. And first up on this third sampler is a Prins Thomas edit of Sex Tags Mania character Skatebard and his bubbly, xylophone paddled "Sequence". Recent label debutant Oyvind Morken delivers a croaky-Tropicana-themed "En Navneles Jaevel", while Prins Thomas provides his own track with the jolly bassline that is "Alpha Tanga Lama". Jarle Brathen returns to the series after appearing on the first sampler, this time in remix form with Omar V's Italo disco version of "Track 4" that in parts whispers New Order's "Blue Monday" into your ear.

Review: Rome-based combo Odeon is an interesting proposition. Basically two sets of musician brothers brought together by mutual friend (and Mondo label boss) Francesco De Bellis, their debut recording is a pleasingly hard-to-pigeonhole affair. Sometimes psychedelic, often dreamy and always atmospheric, the album's 12-tracks variously draw influence from odd Italian library music, eccentric synthesizer soundtracks, Talk Talk, the Cocteau Twins, shoegaze and the heady, E'd-up sound soup of ambient house. In fact, one of the tracks even sounds a little like REM if Michael Stipe and company had necked a bunch of disco biscuits and moved to Ibiza. While the unique and intoxicating sound is clearly theirs, you can hear the guiding hand of De Bellis, who acted as producer throughout.
