We Call Love (DJ Harvey remix)
Review: Art Department and Crosstown Rebels seem to have taken the house world by storm in the last two years. Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White's "We Call Love" has been picked apart carefully put back together again by the legendary Balearic beardo DJ Harvey for a limited one sided, hand stamped, hand numbered white label. Slow burning and downtempo, "We Call Love" plays with the original's raw electric guitar melodies, piercing key sequences and chopped vocal snippets. Sensual and lethargically bouncy, it's a late night house track made in typical modern and blase style from the CR camp. Be quick!

Berobreo - "White Rabbit" (5:19)
The Magic Track - "Jamming With Mom" (5:34)
Oldchap - "I Want To Show You" (5:16)
Alexny - "Not Bad" (5:36)
Review: The Moiss Music label seems to like to drop their EPs two at a time. They did it in February and they're doing it again in May. This eighth outing collects four more lively disco cuts, each with their own subtle influences. Berobreo's 'White Rabbit' for instance has funky undertones with loopy guitar riffs and nice breaks. The Magic Track's 'Jamming With Mom' meanwhile is more sensuous and deep, with late-night synth work and seductive vocals. Oldchap's 'I Want To Show You' has an expressive soul vocal with more low-slung grooves and Alexny's 'Not Bad' then gets quick, clipped and loopy for its lip-pouting disco thrills.

Joey Negro - "Stomp Your Feet" (Hot Toddy remix) (8:27)
Opolopo - "Put Your Cap On" (5:43)
Review: Z Records DJ-focused Attack The Dancefloor series reaches its tenth installment via an EP packed full of previously unheard secret weapons. There's naturally plenty to get excited about, from the piano-driven goodtime house grooves of Crackazat's floor-filling "What You're Feeling", to the boogie and jazz-funk inspired space-house of Opolopo's brilliant "Put Your Cap On". Sandwiched in between you'll find two Joey Negro disco workouts: his own extended 'Boogie Dub Extravaganza' version of the Sunburst Band style "Must Be The Music", and a nu-disco-meets-Italo-disco reinvention of "Stomp Your Feet" from Crazy P's Chris Todd under the now familiar Hot Toddy alias.

DJ Kaos - "Hard To Earn" (Solomun remix)
Review: Renowned for releases on DFA, !K7, Rong and Clone amongst others, DJ Kaos has spread his Chicago infused house message to the whole world. Now, on German imprint Diynamic, he drops a deep and grooving electronic workout in "Hard to Earn". Sharing this exclusive release is a special collaboration between Holger Zilske and Daso who turn in a wonderfully unique and twisted number in the form of "Westbound". Finishing the release, Solomun ties in a low-slung, groove-led rework of "Hard to Earn".

Eddie C - "Coffe Way"
Alkalino - "Own Thing"
Cole Medina - "Movin 2 Fast"
Osmose - "I Wouldn't Wanna B Like Disco"
Review: Movin 2 Fast? Not when these sparkling disco house jams are spinning... You'll be shimmying and boogying at just the right speed as these Whiskey wunderkinds let loose. Each of the four cuts is a highlight in its own way; Eddie C conjures up the spirits of Cevin Fisher with just a dash of Krivit keys, Alkalino's low-swung bass jacker is as sexy as disco gets, Cole Medina pilfers a very well-known sample and injects it with undiluted disco dust while Osmose closes the show with an ace edit of the Alan Parsons Project.

Heko - "Melrose Flames"
Heko - "Ethereal"
Gnork - "Out There"
Gnork - "Blorp93-Piano 93"
Oddnipp - "Tripp 4"
Review: The warm sway of analogue synth jams abound on the latest Blind Jacks Journey release, conjuring up the kind of cosy house music that will see you through the long winter nights. Heko holds court over the A side "Melrose Flames" and "Ethereal", summoning up a healthy amount of synth-pop charm and soundtrack mystery across both jams. Gnork has a slightly more space-sighted approach on "Out There" with its wistful Detroit-esque pads and dusty drum machines, before he switches stance on "Blorp93-Piano93" with a focus on a subtly processed piano hook with little else around it. Oddnipp's "Tripp 4" takes a diversion once again, this time ending up down a spooky back road of forlorn melodic wraiths and downbeat house rhythms.

The Minimal Wave Tapes: J Rocc Edits Vol 2

Felix Kubin - "Japan Japan" (J Rocc edit)
Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

Kris Baha - "Heart Of Foil" (6:30)
Otologic - "Ballada Kwasu" (5:32)
Review: Out of the buoyant Melbourne house, disco and edits scene, Power Cuts kicks off as a sublabel of Power Station with label boss Kris Baha joined by some likeminded heads for four varied and generally far out party joints. These are after all eclectic times we live in, and Power Cuts reflects this by veering from Jonny 5's dense and tense "Voices" to the limber Afro inflections of Dreems' "Ahead Temper". Baha himself delivers the industrialized thrust of "Heart Of Foil" and then Otologic finish the record on a jolly note with the charming, synthy delights of "Ballada Kwasu".

Review: They're back! Celebrating 10 years of LCO, Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel team up with certified don Omar for two soul-cuddling, sun-glazed fusions. "It's So" hits instantly with an Amp Fiddler flavour as its tempo, layered elements, quick-licking bass, sweeping strings and Omar's powerful vocals all gel in warm harmony. "History", meanwhile, takes a slow and smouldering route but with a bassline that gets raunchier on every listen. Don't take our word for it, though - check the instrumentals provided. Happy anniversary LCO!

Fire (Neo Disco instrumental mix) (4:36)
Review: Los Charly's Orchestra sorts Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel first worked with veteran British soul singer Omar on their 2017 double A-side single "It's So/History". All involved clearly had a good time, because they've decided to repeat the exercise. "Fire" is arguably a step up, with Omar's honeyed vocals soaring above a rubbery groove, heady female backing vocals, cut-glass strings and punchy horns on the standout "Classic Disco Mix". Elsewhere, the noticeably heavier "Neo-Soulful Disco Mix" sounds like the kind of sumptuous, all-organic soulful disco-house fare we'd expect to hear from the likes of Joey Negro and Yam Who. Wisely, the duo has also included instrumental revisions of both versions. We prefer the superb vocal takes, but it's nice to have the choice.

Chris Massey - "In Zaire"
Oosh! - "Brothers Dub"
Review: The Rack & Ruin edits offshoot of Mancunian club/label El Diablo's returns in triumphant form with two heavy duty reworks that will find favour with many disco selectors. El Diablo's Social Club's very own Chris Massey leads the way, tackling the Johnny Wakelin classic "In Zaire" and turning the chugometer up to 11 - expect to hear this up and down the Croatian coastline this summer. Massey's contribution is complemented by Oosh! who are a new name to us, but their edits seemingly have been racking up plenty of plays on Soundcloud. Take a listen to their heavily phased and filtered tweak of McCartney and Wonder's early 80s jazz funk boogie jammer "What's That You're Doing".

Review: Repress of the sought after Mukatsuku Records 12 containing two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market. Juno copies come in an exclusive branded card sleeve + sticker

The Noodleman - "That Word Again"
Sleazy McQueen - "Take It Ez"
Osmose - "I Was"
Review: Slo-mo, steamy and sexy... Those three words could sum up pretty much every excellent Smokecloud release, but these three tracks are purpose built for the more sensual sessions you might wish to soundtrack. Each one purrs with low-end sultriness while shimmering with all the disco motifs we've come to expect from such a discerning label. Noodleman's "That Word Again" finds inspiration in the German quarters, Sleazy McQueen devilishly teases us with vocal fractures buried deep under a throbbing bass groove and finally Osmose brings us to the most hypnotic close possible with a bed of dubbed out percussion and otherworldly loops that build and twist. Ready for bed yet?

Review: After two sold out first volumes, Obscure & Obsolete are back with a third instalment in their new series. It might have been a while year since the last outing but the wait was worth it as these latest edits are on fire once again. Big Foot's 'Watch Your Step' is a funky disco gem with live drumming and loose perc, then Sehrazat goes for a tighter arrangement that reaches to the stars with its big synth work. The flip-side offers steamy, loved up and intense tackle from Leb Harmony, and there is still time for the jazz licks and clipped disco funk of Jean Musy's 'Danse Dans Le Cabaret.'

Review: Genuine sure-fire summer sensations; Dutch disco dynamo Oceanic lays down three bracing electronic grooves that flutter and flip with instant synthetic charm. "Tijuana Blanco" wafts with big pads as a perky bottom end shifts and shuffles over a weighty kick, "Danza Blanco" is the deepest of the set as the overlapping arpeggios tremble delicately over a lean but insistent beat and infectious congas, "Piobero" completes the set on a timeless note as 80s-flavoured synth flutes and chimes embrace over a jacking beat with a nod to Mr Fingers. Sitting somewhere between Banco De Gaia, Prins Thomas and Henrik Schwarz, each cut deftly fuses faraway eastern instrumentation with the headier, cyclic loopy signatures of late night tech. What's My Return On Love? (Tony Massera dub)
Review: French disco funk revivalists Boogie Times continue their earnest endeavours to officially reissue those lesser known gems from the 1980s archives of labels of days gone by - swiftly gaining a rep as the transatlantic brothers in arms for Juno favourites Peoples Potential Unlimited. The latest drop sees the Boogie Times spotlight fall on the undeniably heavy sounds of Ocie III, whose "What's My Return On Love" comes across like a funked up Luther Vandross dosed up on Viagra. The flip brings a remix from Tony Massera that tightens up the groove, lays down some added percussion and lets that the low end growl lead the way.

Odd Mob - "XTC" (4:36)
Review: .Odd Mob & GD Vandal very much sounds like a hip-hop duo from the early 90s, but it is not. It is Brisbane based Harry Hope who has been making beats for a decade and more, and GD Vandal about whom nothing is known and this is only their first release. It arrives on Tinted and features two choice tunes. The first is a collab between the pair - 'Been Dreaming' - and is a full throttle house banger with catchy and impassioned vocal loops over thumping drums and nice raw hits. Perfect stuff. Odd Mob then goes solo for 'XTC' which is a deep tech throbber with a darker vocal.

Review: Techy funk As and Bs from dream trio Oden & Fatzo, who finally press their hit house bit 'Lauren' to 12" wax. This 'accidental hit' came about when the bass sample, taken from a song by indie band Men I Trust, was lifted and plonked against a slapping house beat and backing strings. The resulting tune, which exploded in popularity in 2020, was a bittersweet ode to the dance in a time when no-one could think or begin to do so. Now, the instrumental occupies the B, taking up all the funking wax space it deserves.

This Private Disco Show 12" should be seen less as Odessa cover version of Lime and more a homage to the husband-wife partnership with the same style of impossible-to-forget neon synth hook and sultry vocals. He now makes a welcome return, this time with the go-slow king that is Eddie C. Between them they cook up a perfectly low-slung tune in 'Little Boxes.' Review: Originally released back in 1977, 'Native New Yorker' is considered by some as one of the greatest disco productions ever. Odyssey was originally formed in 1968 by Virgin Islands born sisters Carmen, Lillian and Louise Lopez. Lillian and Louise later teamed up with Filipino producer Tony Reynolds where they explored a more pop-oriented sound as heard here. Brookside Records dug through the Sony vaults and came up with a pair of remixes by NYC 'mixmaster ' Mike Maurro. The A-side's Extended version has a long extended intro, break and extended instrumental sections. On the flip, 'Use It Up and Wear It Out' boosts the rhythm section and adds subtle changes while staying respectful to the original sound

Review: Onur Engin is one of the few producers whose edits consistently hit the spot. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Engin has a subtle touch, an approach that pays the source material due reverence. More often than not, this old-fashioned approach pays dividends. This ninth volume of his popular OE Edits series boasts four more hits, from the spiritual disco-funk of "Expansions" (a re-cut of Lonnie Liston Smith's original), to the sweaty closeness of Roberta Flack re-version "Feel Like Makin' Love". For the Balearic heads, there's also a delicious version of Santana's "Aqua Marine", and a dash of spiritual jazz in the form of "Maracatu". They'll go like hot cakes, so don't sleep.

Review: After the success of their first foray into the world of edits, t-shirt brand turned record label Millionhands enlist Tee Mango once again, and this time they've brought along a friend in the shape of OFFMSG for some shadowy disco licks steeped in easy rolling grooves. "Chicago" sounds like it could well be dipping into the Roy Ayers pool of funk with its taut strings and heavy pound, catching the loop and spacing it out for a wonderfully psyched out jam. "Black Gold" is a touch lighter with the catchy piano hooks and cheeky Moog splatters, primed and ready to slip into any discerning boogie bag.

There is a charm and seduction to the big, bustling, restless disco fired loops of Paul Older's 'The Static' which makes way for an equally funk fulled and party starting gem from Saltywax with 'Keep Grooves.' On the flip side, things slow down a little with Pcj Project who opt for a Latin tinged, sax lead charmer on 'Manussa' and then last but not least is some cool jazz chord work and deep house shuffling on Lego Edit's 'Welcome To The Jazz Club.' Nice.

Paul Older kick off with 'Nothing,' which is a rolling and trumpet laced jam to fill the floor. 'One For Frida' gets more deep and dubby, with more big horns but a flabbier and more silky groove to sink into. On the flip, it's all majestic leads and noodling solos for the twinkling disco sounds of the late night roller 'Shiva's Chant' while 'Street Jam' closes out in smooth, string laced and seductive fashion.

Living In Another Edit
Review: You might be more familiar with the Old School Rider's more commonly used alias which most recently graced the Wolf + Lamb black imprint, regardless his entry into the still budding Foot + Mouth hall of fame matches the quality of the label's previous output. "Lefty Hangover" struts across the A Side with an ecstatic confidence that proves to be utterly infectious, especially when that piano hits! On the flip the obscure Italo delight that was Federico And Marrakech Orchestra's 1983 hit "Casbah Boogie" gets a bottom end boost whilst "Living In Another Edit" adds some Balearic bounce to the Talk Talk classic.

Review: .An Italo disco rarity from 1985 now available again via XYZ on a colour 12' maxi single: Karl Olivas' 'Follow Me!!!'. The A-side features the rare original version in all its neon-lit glory, and as a highlight they proudly present two new and exclusive remixes by Flemming Dalum (who hands in a mesmerising slo-mo rendition) and the new dance fantasy continues on the flip with an F. Ricci version (The Ri-Mix).

Review: Mature by name, mature by nature, this label deals in grown up and challenging sounds that fuse myriad different worlds. Russian duo Olta Karawane are being this compilation of slow industrial punk EBM edits, which go from dark and depraved to tribal and back again. There is a freaky paranoid to the jungle sounds of 'Furchte Dich Nicht' and more stark industrial hits that power along 'Furchte Dich Nicht.' The excellent 'Prostituierte Fischen' has raw broken beats and punk vocals spat out over the corrugated drums and it is one of multiple highlights here.

Galocher (7:47)
In Freunde Mit (dub) (7:28)
Review: The sixth invitation to take Deep Cover is another mystic venture into the electronic unknown. These beguiling sounds draw on wave, disco, dub, EDM, synth and even industrial with their post-punk guitar lines and soot-stained synths. The drums are mechanical yet seductive with freaky vocals on 'Galocher' bringing a weird and wonderful mix of the ancient and the futuristic. On the flip, 'In Freunde Mit' is built on a fleshy, heavy, steady bassline with dubbed out drums and FX and swirling cosmic chords next to meandering leads. Wonderfully fresh.

Mayolye (Nik Weston official Mukatsuku edit) (5:26)
Review: Destination Paris, 1980: Gabonese singer Jean Ondeno is in the eye of the French capital's afro-disco storm. Championed by broadcaster Alphonse Marie Toukas and partnered with songwriter, producer (and 70s TV host) Philippe Brejean, Ondeno blessed the world with one eponymous album and "Mayolye" was the opening cut. Vibrant, upbeat and loaded with effortless funk and Ondeno's soft falsetto, it's a vital slice of afro-disco fusion that comes complete with a subtly-charged, floor-primed Mukatsuku edit from Nik Weston. One per customer; this is not to be slept on.
