Enjoy Your Self EP 1
Cat: EESS 005. Rel: 21 Nov 22
Akira Arasawa - "Panorama New Touch" (6:33)
OR - "Hammock Beats" (4:15)
Ground & MAYUKo - "Liquidanz" (9:21)
Hutte Sound System - "Fire Fly" (4:54)
Review: Akira Arasawa opens up with psychedelic Balearic house on 'Panorama New Touch' while OR's 'Hammock Beats' is glitchy and low-slung downtempo. On the flip is the nine-minute head melter 'Liquidanz' with its rippling synth modulations and Hutte Sound System close down with the dreamy end of the night soother 'Fire Fly'. Thsi mproject sees Especial Specials joining forces ed up with Chillmountain Recordings - a label from Osaka, Japan - on a series of new EPs, this being the first of hopefully many. The idea is to show the world the talents the label has at its disposal. It's definitely a case of mission accomplished on this evidence.

We Call Love (DJ Harvey remix)
Review: Art Department and Crosstown Rebels seem to have taken the house world by storm in the last two years. Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White's "We Call Love" has been picked apart carefully put back together again by the legendary Balearic beardo DJ Harvey for a limited one sided, hand stamped, hand numbered white label. Slow burning and downtempo, "We Call Love" plays with the original's raw electric guitar melodies, piercing key sequences and chopped vocal snippets. Sensual and lethargically bouncy, it's a late night house track made in typical modern and blase style from the CR camp. Be quick!

Bell & James - "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)" (unreleased Disco mix) (9:06)
Oliver Cheatham - "Get Down Saturday Night" (unreleased Disco mix) (7:29)
Billy Ocean - "Nights (Feel Like Gettin Down)" (unreleased Disco mix) (6:54)
Bell & James - "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)" (unreleased Disco club) (6:55)
Review: We've not been able to ascertain whether or not the versions of the classic disco and boogie anthems featured on this first volume of the Weekender series are genuine "unreleased disco mixes" from the period, but they certainly sound like they are. What we get is two fine versions of Bell & James' superb sing-along 'Livin' It Up (Friday Night)' - a tastefully extended, DJ-friendly 'version' and a chunkier 'disco club' take that wisely emphasizes the groove and more percussive sections - plus a gradually building extension of Oliver Cheetham favourite 'Get Down Saturday Night' and a decent rearrangement of early Billy Ocean fave 'Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down)'. In other words, it's a quartet of peak-time disco treats for all those moments when only a familiar favourite will do.

Berobreo - "White Rabbit" (5:19)
The Magic Track - "Jamming With Mom" (5:34)
Oldchap - "I Want To Show You" (5:16)
Alexny - "Not Bad" (5:36)
Review: The Moiss Music label seems to like to drop their EPs two at a time. They did it in February and they're doing it again in May. This eighth outing collects four more lively disco cuts, each with their own subtle influences. Berobreo's 'White Rabbit' for instance has funky undertones with loopy guitar riffs and nice breaks. The Magic Track's 'Jamming With Mom' meanwhile is more sensuous and deep, with late-night synth work and seductive vocals. Oldchap's 'I Want To Show You' has an expressive soul vocal with more low-slung grooves and Alexny's 'Not Bad' then gets quick, clipped and loopy for its lip-pouting disco thrills.

A-Tweed & Oltrefuturo - "Fyah" (5:40)
Review: Cult Edits are specialists in pushing a certain kind of heater, working in a mode landing something between edit and original. Six producers - Mario Bianco, Tomoo Hata, Roe Deers, Radial Gaze, A Tweed and Oltrefuturo - lay down a blend of sampledelic, ecstatic, multi-tempo'd tribal moods. Channelling everything from chic Tulum rituals to the brutalism of Eastern-European underground clubs, and rounded off by doses of Italian rasta and Japanese re-imagining of Hungarian folk song, all come to the label's exquisite brand of mandala-esque vinyl.

Boeing - "Dance On The Beat" (Moplen edit) (7:01)
Electric Mind - "Summing Up" (Massimo Beradi rework) (5:53)
Maurice McGee - "Styx" (DJ Rocca 808 edit) (6:24)
Orlando Johnson - "Turn The Music On" (Re Tide remix) (6:53)
Review: More from re-launched Italo-disco era label Full Time Records, who here present four fresh reworks of tracks from the vaults. G.A.M.M-signed scalpel hero Moplen steps up first to deliver a fine dubbed-out re-edit of Boeing's slap bass-propelled electrofunk classic "Dance To The Beat", before Massimo Beradi adds a little subtle, mid-tempo house flavour to Electric Mind's lesser-celebrated 1982 Italo-disco jam "Summing Up". DJ Rocca opens side B in some style, hammering away at a TR-808 drum machine while giving Maurice McGee's 1984 cut "Styx" an altogether deeper vibe. Meanwhile, Re-Tide turn Orlando Johnson's Paradise Garage favourite "Turn The Music On" into a muscular chunk of bass-propelled boogie-house badness.

It's Hot (reissue)
Cat: AFS 034. Rel: 02 Dec 19
Burnin' Beat (It's Hot) (11:00)
Searchin' (10:21)
Review: It would be fair to say that the Afro Synth label has dug deep for this latest reissue. Little is known about Burnin Beat, an obscure South African disco outfit who released their sole 12", It's Hot, on RPM way back in 1979. They're a great example of an outfit that, for whatever reason, fell through the cracks. The title track, a lolloping, 11-minute disco workout rich in fluid synth lines, rubbery slap bass, sparring instrument solos and the powerful vocals of Olive Masigna, is something of a long-lost gem. Original flipside "Searchin" is almost as good, with Masigna adding a touching vocal to a backing track that pushes the band's favourite Moog synthesizer to the fore.

By Design - "Stir It Together"
Osmose - "Al Knows What's Up"
Osmose - "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed"
Review: Cruising nice and easy into earshot on the Smokecloud imprint, byDesign and Osmose take a side each in chopping up some choice old classics with a tender touch to work in modern contexts. byDesign gets the whole A-side to roam over with a version of Diana King's cover of the Bob Marley classic, "Stir It Up", working on a 90s flavoured hip hop groove and dubby cuts of King's vocal. On the flip, Osmose is having a lot of fun working on Alexander O'Neal's "Fake", keeping the tough beat intact and instead letting the effects bring in the changes. While the origin of the last track on the 12" is undetectable at this point, "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed" comes on like a prime slice of Balearic goodness, packing easy horn blasts, funky guitar licks and a whole lot of filter action.

Opolopo - "Put Your Cap On" (5:43)
Review: Z Records DJ-focused Attack The Dancefloor series reaches its tenth installment via an EP packed full of previously unheard secret weapons. There's naturally plenty to get excited about, from the piano-driven goodtime house grooves of Crackazat's floor-filling "What You're Feeling", to the boogie and jazz-funk inspired space-house of Opolopo's brilliant "Put Your Cap On". Sandwiched in between you'll find two Joey Negro disco workouts: his own extended 'Boogie Dub Extravaganza' version of the Sunburst Band style "Must Be The Music", and a nu-disco-meets-Italo-disco reinvention of "Stomp Your Feet" from Crazy P's Chris Todd under the now familiar Hot Toddy alias.

Dane//Close - "Getluv"
Kris Baha - "Blackout"
Otologic - "The Big Smoke"
Jonathan Kusuma - "Electric Hit"
Review: The Power Cuts posse continue to gather strength and widen their reach on this second release, celebrating all kinds of nefarious era-spanning, style-hopping grooves designed for the deviant party. Dane//Close gets the bass slapping to perfection on "Getluv" before Kris Baha drops a stoutly lo-fi piece of primal electro mischief. Otologic has something rather different to say with the spacious, stalking tension of "The Big Smoke", and then Jonathan Kusuma rounds the EP out with a disheveled industrial edit approach on "Electric Hit". This record does a fantastic job of reaching back to the glory days of low budget 80s production, with the attitude to match the punky finish.

Dave & Maurissa - "Look At The Stars" (Dave's Starshine club mix) (7:48)
Opolopo - "Looking For You" (Peter's extended Organ) (6:02)
Review: Soul meets speed garage on this new V/A EP from Z Records, blurring the lines between the genres in just the way we like it. The opening track - Grant Nelson's mix of 'Starlight' by Dave & Omar - is a euphoric, piano-laced uplifter which both sonically and lyrically urges us to reach for the sky. That's followed by the DJ Fudge production 'Everything' by Chocolate Fudge Band, featuring lots of live instrumentation and a Curtis Mayfield style vocal, while over on the flip, 'Looking For You' proves to be a deep and bouncy cut filled with soulful Motown vocal chops and an organ workout worthy of any Sunday service, over a beautifully wonky house framework.

Review: Renowned for releases on DFA, !K7, Rong and Clone amongst others, DJ Kaos has spread his Chicago infused house message to the whole world. Now, on German imprint Diynamic, he drops a deep and grooving electronic workout in "Hard to Earn". Sharing this exclusive release is a special collaboration between Holger Zilske and Daso who turn in a wonderfully unique and twisted number in the form of "Westbound". Finishing the release, Solomun ties in a low-slung, groove-led rework of "Hard to Earn".

Review: Movin 2 Fast? Not when these sparkling disco house jams are spinning... You'll be shimmying and boogying at just the right speed as these Whiskey wunderkinds let loose. Each of the four cuts is a highlight in its own way; Eddie C conjures up the spirits of Cevin Fisher with just a dash of Krivit keys, Alkalino's low-swung bass jacker is as sexy as disco gets, Cole Medina pilfers a very well-known sample and injects it with undiluted disco dust while Osmose closes the show with an ace edit of the Alan Parsons Project.

Review: Masterworks Music mastermind 80's Child unleashes the third volume of his Masterworks compilations. This is a two-part vinyl release with the first part featuring The Funk District hailing from Cancun, who kicks off the A side with "The Funky Joint". He gets a good ol' time shuffle going before handing it over to Parisian Oldchap for a proper low-slung boogie in the form of "To The Top". On the flip, Godfather of the western Australian dance scene Dr. Packer gets down with a wicked edit on the late night sexiness of "Your Big Chance" and fellow Mexican Hotmood goes out on a high note with smokin' hot vocal number "Raw Dance".

You Can Do It (HH 2023 rework) (6:40)
You Can Do It (HH Get On The Floor mix) (6:20)
Review: Second time around for Harlem Hustlers' surging disco-house anthem, which first appeared in stores way back in 2005. This time round, the Italian duo have reworked it considerably, placing underground boogie legend Orlando Johnson's lead vocal front and centre while opting for some more organic-sounding instrumentation (the original was more sample-heavy). On their '2023 Rework' they channel the sound of Groove Culture label bosses Mickey More and Andy Tee, wrapping Johnson's vocal, tidy horns, flanged guitars and classic-sounding piano riffs around a warming bass guitar part and crunchy house drums. It's a very classy and far more authentically 'disco'-sounding track than their 2005 original. Their flip-side 'Get On The Floor' mix, meanwhile, has a smoother, more synth-heavy disco-house sound, less vocal and even more of the excellent horn sounds.

Oddnipp - "Tripp 4"
Review: The warm sway of analogue synth jams abound on the latest Blind Jacks Journey release, conjuring up the kind of cosy house music that will see you through the long winter nights. Heko holds court over the A side "Melrose Flames" and "Ethereal", summoning up a healthy amount of synth-pop charm and soundtrack mystery across both jams. Gnork has a slightly more space-sighted approach on "Out There" with its wistful Detroit-esque pads and dusty drum machines, before he switches stance on "Blorp93-Piano93" with a focus on a subtly processed piano hook with little else around it. Oddnipp's "Tripp 4" takes a diversion once again, this time ending up down a spooky back road of forlorn melodic wraiths and downbeat house rhythms.

First up is iLO who plays the long game with a yearning and burning slice of deep house that starts out stripped and subtle before blossoming into a fully-fledged vocal delight. Ooft! takes care of the B-side with a boogie-tasting get down entitled "Howard's Way" which will get heads nodding and bodies popping to a bassline that calls to mind Evelyn King's much loved "I'm In Love" low end destroyer.

Review: Salsoul has always been good at getting contemporary producers to reinterpret classics from its bulging catalogue, with recent years bringing fresh edits and reworks by The Reflex, Moplen, DJ Pope, Dimitri From Paris and Late Nite Tuff Guy. Here the latter returns with a second helping of tastefully tooled-up revisions. The Australian producer kicks things off with a warm and woozy hybrid disco/house take on Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up" that's quite a departure from the original mix. Over on side B, he turns in a languid and groovy, mid-tempo house version of Orlando Riva Sound's overlooked "Body To Body Boogie" before successfully revising Salsoul Orchestra's much-loved "Ooh, I Love It (Love Break)" whilst retaining most of the original vocals and instrumentation.

Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

Jonny5 - "Voices" (7:45)
Dreems - "Ahead Temper" (5:08)
Kris Baha - "Heart Of Foil" (6:30)
Otologic - "Ballada Kwasu" (5:32)
Review: Out of the buoyant Melbourne house, disco and edits scene, Power Cuts kicks off as a sublabel of Power Station with label boss Kris Baha joined by some likeminded heads for four varied and generally far out party joints. These are after all eclectic times we live in, and Power Cuts reflects this by veering from Jonny 5's dense and tense "Voices" to the limber Afro inflections of Dreems' "Ahead Temper". Baha himself delivers the industrialized thrust of "Heart Of Foil" and then Otologic finish the record on a jolly note with the charming, synthy delights of "Ballada Kwasu".

Fool's Paradise Sampler Vol 1
Mark Knight, Sgt Slick, Beverly Knight - "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (5:45)
Opolopo, Jaki Graham - "Fire" (6:07)
Review: Fool's Paradise is the exciting new label from Toolroom Records' Mark Knight. Coming straight from the heart, it's a natural progression from his hugely acclaimed 2021 album release, 'Untold Business', which saw Mark go back to his roots, paying homage to the more funky, soulful, and vocal house from the 1990s from where he came. With a focus on real instrumentation and production, coupled with great songwriting, this new Toolroom sublabel will be a platform for high quality house music designed to stand the test of time. Launching the new label with a mighty bang and delivering the first in our exciting new vinyl sampler series is head honcho Mark Knight, who joins forces with his Australian Toolroom labelmate, Sgt Slick, and British Soul sensation, Beverley Knight, on a dynamite cover of Prince's 1979 classic, 'I Wanna Be Your Lover'. Respectfully transporting the song onto today's dancefloors, Mark & Sgt Slick deliver a classy uplifting soulful house production, loaded with funky guitars, warm pads and sublime key performances. Adding the icing on the cake and putting her own stamp on things, Beverley belts out one of her signature spine-tingling vocals, garnished with lush harmonies and BV's that would indeed make The Purple One proud. Completing the vinyl package is dance music stalwart, Opolopo, and British soul icon, Jaki Graham, whom together bring the dancefloor heat with their new single, 'Fire'. Powered by a potent soulful house groove from Opolopo, loaded with warm piano hooks, emotive synth melodies and a sublime popping bass hook, 'Fire' see's Jaki flaunt her electrifying vocal talents with a show-stopping performance on this irresistibly catchy song.
