Futurism
Futurism (12")
Cat: ISM 010X. Rel: 06 May 11
Alena - "Changes" (Ron Basejam remix)
Yam Who? - "I'm In Love" (feat Natasha Watts)
PBR Streetgang - "J2ThaB"
Brothers Young - "Inferno"
Review: Yam Who?'s ISM label come through with a four track slice of disco centric Futurism, featuring the man Yam himself alongside PBR Streetgang and Ron Basejam. It's the latter who takes the lead with a remix of Alena's "Changes" that sees her sultry vocal teased by a most excellent of analogue synth leads that splurges brilliantly across the crisp mid tempo chug. Yam Who? teams up with vocalist Natasha Watts for the similarly bottom heavy bump of "I'm In Love" which has a certain warehouse appeal to it. On the flip, PBR pay respect to the godfather of soul James Brown with the gritty flex of "J2thaB" with the sadly departed Mr Brown strangely sounding at times like he wants to go to Tesco. We always took him for a Waitrose man, but regardless this is probably the track you'll reach for most! Finally Brothers Young do their thing to a Trammps classic, with little more than the bassline retained. Big tip!

Those Guys EP

AROUND7 - "Live At Filmore" (5:31)
Joss Moog - "I Can't Say No" (6:36)
Paul Cut - "Heaven" (5:13)
Hatelate - "The Boogie Show" (feat Claire Lennox) (6:29)
Review: The French brat pack are back; Around7 and Joss Moog are a couple of Phil Weeks' proteges and they turn in some sweet disco edits here. They just so happen to own the label too. Around7's "Live At Fillmore" sounds so awesome; is it possibly a Moodymann/Norma Jean Bell edit? Moog's "I cant Say No" is some proper disco house deepness. On the flip, they've got some newcomers in the form of Paul Cut with "Heaven" a loopy soul-funk cut up and Hatelate with "The Boogie Show" which is pretty sweet, who did he sample on this one again? Reminiscent of "Working Nights" era Trus'me.

BENGOA feat PAN
Thelxis (12")
Cat: B2RW 001. Rel: 09 Oct 23
Thelxis (extended vocal) (8:29)
Thelxis (instrumental) (8:10)
Review: B2 Recordings is a label run by Greek talent Bengoa as a platform to offer up his own diverse sounds. Here he serves up a new single featuring Pan that is sublime, seductive and deep. The vocals you will recognise from a classic pop hit but here they get all resung in an even more libidinous fashion. The drums roll, and the percussion is loose, and bright but soft chord stabs heighten the mood. Flip it over for an instrumental version of 'Thelxis' that is all about the late-night grooves. Two stylish sounds for romantic moments.

Riviera Disco Vol 2
Cat: BAP 022. Rel: 23 Apr 14
Bijou - "Twilight"
De Pin Up Club - "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep"
Peet Need - "Here Comes The Arps"
Impresa Gottardo - "Trafori"
Review: Otto Kraanen's Bordello A Parigi label are on a roll right now, with no less than ten records issued since the turn of the year! One of those was the inauguration of the Riviera Disco series, overseen by Riviera Disco Club selector Julien Tavernier, which got off to a fine internationally flavoured start earlier this month with contributions from Disco Sigaretta, Dilemma and Sauroid founder DJ Gio MC-505. Volume two looks to be just as exotic in sound and international in flavour with Belgian producer Bijou sharing space with cuts from Dutch pair De Pin Up Club and Peet Need and Impresa Gottardo, the new collaboration between Ajello's Philippe Taverio and Jean Paul Lazarre. In need of pumping italo and synth heavy disco? This 12" will satisfy those cravings and then some.

Pato Watson - "Ella Fue" (6:09)
Paul Older - "Turkish Lights" (6:02)
C Da Afro - "Nothing But The Funk" (6:33)
Juan Soto - "All Is Full Of Love" (5:10)
Review: Super Spicy's Super Spicy Recipe series is back with a sixth mouthwatering offering and once again it's a super hot outing of party-ready house and disco sounds. First up is the irresistibly colourful disco charm of Birdee with the freewheeling 'Underground' and its groove-infused piano. Label boss Monsieur Van Pratt then adds his own spin to a rare groove classic with a lung-busting soul vocal and Pato Watson is in edit mode as he tweaks 'Ella Fue' to perfection. Italian don Paul Older brings some funky jazz fusion sounds to his steamy 'Turkish Lights, C. Da Afro keeps it a party with his 'Nothing But The Funk' and Mexican Juan Soto slips into a more deep and loved-up funk-house vibe on 'All Is Full Of Love'.

Black Devil/Prins Thomas - "On Just Foot (Slide Inside)"
Black Devil/Unit 4 - "An Other Skin (Days Of Blackula)"
Black Devil/Black Mustang - "Constantly No Respect (The Phenomena Of)"
Review: Black Devil Disco Club returns to action on LoEB with "Ride Again", a collection of mixes from his "In Dub" album. First up is the Prins Thomas mix of "On Just Foot", a chugging Italo disco groover led by a rolling arpeggiated b-line, quirky analogue stabs, vocoder vocal hits and wicked conga-laden beats. Proper floor-pleasing Italo workout. Next we have the Unit 4 mix of "An Other Skin", more b-line driving space disco with dark sounds and huge synth lines. Last but not least is the Black Mustang mix of "Constantly No Respect", a hard-hitting percussive jam exploring the darker side of the Italo universe.

One Base
Precious Beast
Lost Afternoon
Review: Strictly Rhythm ledge Peter Black revisits the Black Order project - and for those of you unfamiliar, Electropolis go so far as to include a printed one sheet that describes the reasoning and history behind a series of releases that began in 2005. Indeed, this is the first Electropolis release since 2007, and contains three raw compositions based on ideas Black had between 1991 and 2005. In period since then, the technology that powers what we call edits has changed exponentially. However, it's clear that the ideas that go into "One Base" could never be replicated using Ableton or similar software - a dizzying dissection of The Clash at their most ubiquitous, the version on this twelve is a 2011 master of a test pressing that did the rounds in 1991! It literally thumps off the needle and the bassline will cause chaos in any dancefloor situation. The flipside synth boombap take on Beastie Boys sounds oddly out of key but retains an off kilter charm whilst "Lost Afternoon" plunders the same little fluffy source as The Orb. It is however the A Side that demands your attention.

Mouna Power (4:28)
Mouna Power (dance dub) (5:52)
Review: Ever-reliable funk fusionist Bosq has scored another hit here, this time with the help of Favourite Recordings regular Pat Kalla, a talented French poet and singer. 'Mouna Power' is another great example of Bosq's ability to successfully meld together elements of Afrobeat, Afro-Cuban music and tropical grooves, adding layers of colourful instrumentation (bass, keys, horns, guitars and so on). The excellent original version comes backed with a longer, slightly tougher but no less warming and kaleidoscopic 'Dancefloor Dub'. It contains most of the vocals, more percussion and a greater role for the killer bassline and is probably our pick of the mixes

Platinum City - "Holy Spirit" (7:35)
Yam Who? & Brian Lucas - "Yah Mo B There" (6:16)
Review: House music's roots are in the church and this new a celebratory various artist collection pays homage to that. The grooves are laced with soulful vocals, churchy chords and big strings that make for grand architecture and grander feelings of joy. Mark Brickman & Yam Who? open with a vocal gem that cannot help but bring a smile, while Wayfaring Strangers pump it up a little more with some funky disco house before Platinum City get you locked in a nice loose, long legged groove that is resplendent with lush keys and big vocal turns. 'Yah Mo B There' has an irresistible 80s vibe and big sing along choruses that will get hairs standing on end.

Bubbles The Pimp - "Winterunamerican" (5:48)
Nelly Wilson - "Trapped & Confused" (4:47)
Pierre Pressure - "Love & Beyond" (5:58)
Review: The Dessert Island Discs series continues with yet more arch remixes from across the disco and boogie spectrum. Bubbles The Pimp kicks off the A side with a tasteful treatment of Gil Scott Heron's "Winter In America," which gets rustled up into a sweet and sassy house number with a cheeky acid b-line underneath. Nelly Wilson whips up a storm on the tightly clipped, peak time-oriented "Trapped & Confused". Pierre Pressure's "Love & Beyond" takes it easy on the B side with plenty of fluttering synth wobbles to offset the choppy funk of the guitar - it's a cosmically enhanced floor burner to get you all astral under the collar.

Will Buck & Prtmnto - "Do It To Me" (Parallax remix) (7:31)
Review: Ever since Will Buckley and PRTMNTO debuted on last year's Lovetrax EP on Whiskey Disco Small Batch, we've been eagerly anticipating the duo's first collaborative EP. Title track "Soul Sides" - one of three cuts mixed by label boss Pontchartrain - is a breezy and positive affair, with sultry disco strings and attractive, delay-laden riffs slowly rising above a loopy, deep disco-house groove. "Liif 1982" is a more obviously energetic affair blessed with rubbery slap bass and some seriously seductive synthesizers, while "Do It To Me" is a jazzier and jaunty affair that subtly doffs a cap to both sleazy disco and jazz-funk. Parallax brilliantly strips back the latter track, adding sweet jazz guitars on a superbly summery and laidback interpretation.

Vagabundo Club Social - "El Misterio" (6:00)
Pookie Knights - "Feelin's Mutual" (5:46)
Nnatn - "Magia Du Samba" (7:01)
Review: Some V/As are dubious in their length, seeming to span both EP and mini-compilation length in equal measure, but not this one, which definitely seems to know what it's about. Moiss Music are no stranger to this format, here presenting their second vinyl release 'Watermelon Jam' after the first EP-length four tracker, 'Strawberry Jam'. Nu-disco, funk and house is the name of the game once again, and the tone is set by C Da Afro's 'That Funky Horn' via sample-filtering soul and raucous trumpets. The vocal cuts on this record are among its highlights; Disco Endeavours' 'So High' carries Brandy-esque chirps along a funking house backdrop, while the best of the bunch - 'Feelin's Mutual' by Pookie Knights - channels Carmen or Sylvester in its syrupy refrains and jet-set arps. Even a samba house bit closes it off - a swell all-rounder.

Review: A two-sided affair from Aficionado upon which we see faces old and new. Leonardo takes the lead; new the label, within seconds of hearing the sleazy, low-slapping bassline and purring vocals of "(It's A) Long Way" and the dreamy star-gazing synth arpeggios, epic guitar solo and filmic drums of "Cosmic Summer" you'll understand why he's also appeared on Claremont and Is It Balearic? in the past. Everybody Stand Around
Give It To Me
Review: Killer Endless Flight 12" debut for the Creative Swing Alliance duo of Pablo Valentine and Steven Joyce Ames - two names that should be familiar to the deep house cognoscenti! Valentine runs the MCDE label, while Ames has been responsible for drops on Compost, Soultronik and Jazzmin, though together as Creative Swing Alliance they're on another level. As lead track "Assado" slips into action, those thick bass drum kicks are soon consumed by a richly detailed procession of textures, dub laden vocal edits and percussion that collectively glower with resplendent energy. Alongside this, the detuned jazz thonk of "Everybody Stand Around" gets a much needed vinyl release after featuring on Endless Flight's fifth edition of I'm Starting To Feel OK, while the flip has Valentino going solo for the excellent, hand clap laden beatdown of "Give It To Me".

When they got together to make music it was always going to give rise to monster hits and so it proved. Whoever you are, 'Get Lucky' cannot fail to get you singing along and swinging those hips. Gerard Blanc - "Dis Tout Bas Dis" (remix club) (7:35)
Princesse Erika - "Calomnie" (club mix) (8:41)
Review: A La French 1987-1992 is a new series from long time dance veteran Dimitri From Paris. It finds him digging deep into his vaults and returning with some of his earlier edit work, often with a Balearic feel over deep house drums and 80s disco vibes. The first in the three part series is a real smoother, with sexy and steamy sax lines on 'Yuku Mon Ukulele' bringing a late night feel. There is a slow motion party tune from Alpha Blondy that runs deep, Gerard Blanc then gets a little more upbeat but still with plenty of soulful and loved up vocal vibes and Princesse Erika closes with lush piano stabs and synth strings that light up your heart.

Review: Samosa Records makes a big stride into 2024 with their first offering of the year in the form of the intriguingly named (Re)-Funk+Head EP. Crafted by De Gama himself, all four tracks have undergone careful selection and re-editing. The A-Side kicks off with Dirtyelements & Drunkdrivers' hypnotic club anthem 'Keep It Coming', a blend of bass, keys, and vocals that seductively engage the senses. De Gama follows with 'Some More', a flute-infused funk bomb that ignites primal urges. On the B-Side, Paul Older's 'Sax Francisco' serves up a tropical sorbet of a tune, while MB Edit's 'Got The Feeling' delivers a relentless disco journey. '(Re)-Funk+Head' really embodies Samosa's commitment to pushing things on.

Amazing, Bohannon-influenced, heavy funk danceproduction. Special 6 minutes dance version. The Story of the italian Cosmic sound in 2 minutes: Italy, 1976 In a luxurious discotheque on the Italian Adriatic coast. Every weekend, two American DJs called Bob and Tom play records that are big in the clubs of their hometown New York City. Bob and Tom are the resident DJs at the "Baia degli Angeli", a huge club with various floors, fountains, swimming pools and lots of glitz and jetset people. Two years later, the Baia closed due to a drug raid, and Daniele Baldelli, inspired by the "Baia Sound" shortly after starts DJing in the new club "Cosmic", situated at the Lago di Garda in Northern Italy. Baldelli does not only play funk, soul and disco records. His style is unique: songs are mixed perfectly in an super slow tempo of 80-105 BPM. The music is like an LSD trip: African choirs on 45 RPM, percussion solos, bolero with delay effects, 12" singles on 33 instead of 45. A whole wave of DJs and clubs has been by Daniele Baldelli. And soon the whole of Northern Italy calls this sound "Cosmic Music". Nowadays, producers such as Lindstrom, Prins Thomas or labels like Gomma and Eskimo have been deeply inspired and try to create dance tracks that have a similar atmosphere.

This release apparently originated in heart warming circumstances when Factory Floor's Nik Void penned a letter to Gordon expressing her admiration for his distinguished work. From here, a blossoming partnership was struck up with Void sending Gordon a track which he then overdubbed with saxophones and analogue and digital synths before fellow Factory Floorer Gabe Gurnsey added his own rhythmic input to the gloriously sanguine 15 minutes of trippy cosmic psychedelics. Not to be outdone, Factory Floor's other member Dominic Butler is involved on the flipside track "C Side" which in a bizarro world could be the soundtrack to a Baywatch reboot. It's great to see Factory Floor collaborating with such a legend and demonstrating a capacity for music other than thunderous, industrial repetition.

The Harald Toni Schumacher Release
Cat: ROTHMANS 2. Rel: 18 Mar 13
Timothy J Fairplay - "Off The Rails"
Per Bojsen Moller - "Staying Late"
Steve Cook - "Noahs Arp"
Emile Strunz - "Magnetic"
Review: Named in homage to the series of collectable football cards from the 1970s, the Rothmans label follows the inaugural Mario Kempes Release with another long-haired icon being given his dues in the form of The Harald Toni Schumacher Release, complete with another four tracks of chugging techno-disco. Emotional Response's Timothy J Fairplay kicks things off with "Off The Rails", an expectedly dark and tense piece of Carpenter-esque synth, while LWE writer Per Bojsen-Moller delivers the atmospheric techno of "Staying Late", whose rippling analogue bassline gives way to an unexpectedly funky breakdown. On the flip, Steve Cook's "Noah's Arp" takes things a Balearic house direction with its thick, filtered analogue textures adding some psychedelic colour to its mid-tempo grooves, while Emile Strunz's "Magnetic" adds some acid flavour to its low-swung, vocoder saturated Italo swagger.

Partner Music - "People Should Romance" (5:15)
Review: Moiss Music is dropping two slabs of heat this month - their sixth and seventh EPs overall. Both are various artists' collections with plenty of 'floor-facing disco fun. Mathew Ferness opens this one with 'Paradisio' which has plenty of inspiration taken from late afternoon dances somewhere like Ibiza. 3kelves & We Are Neurotic get you working your feet with the busy percussive grooves and squelchy synth funk of 'Laguna Reservoir Funk' while Naux brings lots of loopy fun and throwback vocal goodness to his steamy 'Foxxy Cleopatra.' Partner Music rounds out the EP with the most energetic and busy of the lot - the restless melodies of 'People Should Romance.'

Trax 25 vs DJ History Vol 5: Trax Re Edited
Frankie Knuckles - "It's A Cold World" (Hotel Motel re-edit)
Pierre's Fantasy Club - "Pfantasy Girl" (Bleepfunk's Acid Sweatbox remix)
Master C & J - "Face It" (Leftside Wobble re-edit)
Review: Arriving almost two months after the first four samplers dropped, this fifth and final vinyl instalment of the Trax Re-edited project curated by DJ History and Harmless gathers up the remaining three tracks from the CD release. Leading the way is the Hotel Motel's tweak of "It's A Cold Cold World" from Frankie Knuckles which hogs the A Side at twelve minutes long and should be filed under "late night weapon". On the flip you get the lysergic intensity of Bleepfunk's raw Acid Sweatbox mix of "Fantasy Girl" from Pierre's Fantasy Club which is notable for the fuzzy analogue hue it accrues as it pounds along, a nice dovetail for the crisper sounding kaleidoscopic pump of Leftside Wobble's revision of Master C & J.

Galaxians - "Hustle Never Ends" (9:09)

Sky Tony - "Tell Me" (5:41)
Review: The Royal Athlete label keeps on running with the sixth volume of its self-titled series. It is a collection, once again, of joyous analogue disco that pays homage to classic sounds but not slavishly so. Kicking things off are the mighty galaxies, absolute kings of this form with plenty of cosmic synths and retro-future synth work. Paul Withey slips into a deeper, more seductive disco-soul sound with 'Confessions' primed and ready for some smoochy dancing, then First Touch's 'I Believe In Boogie' does what it says on the tin. Sky Tony slows things down with the glossy and astral arps of 'Tell Me', making this a superb collection of disco gold.

Freekwency - "Thru The Nite - VHS Futures That Never Will Be" (feat Penelope Shum)
The RK's - "Bring Us Back Together"
Review: It's a family affair, and an illicit one to boot, as the Ruf Kutz label arrives at it's ninth release with a 12" featuring famous cover versions from Ruf Dug and affiliates on a one off pressing, "don't bother suing cos there's no fuckin money". Leading the way is Glowing Palms who, perhaps as a reaction to Skream's latter day love of disco, turns in a wonderfully charming marimba heavy cover of dubstep classic "Midnight Request Line" retitled here as "Ask Me After Midnite (Tropical Marimba Wobble For The Disenfranchised)". London-dwelling Australian producer Bell Towers channels his inner Chris Lowe with a Balearic squelch take on 80s Pet Shop Boys hit "Domino Dancing" whilst Ruf Kutz leads the RKs through a stellar Compass Point rendition of "Music Sounds Better With You".

Review: The Super Spicy Recipe series comes with its 4th installment with a super strong compilation! A1 belongs to the always trustable Igor Gonya, who opens the record with a track that comes directly from the mid 70's, splashed with some new grooves. A2 is on charge of the amazing italian producer Musta, who delivers an astonishing jazzy track to heat the dance floor. Pisma Deer takes control on A3 with a loopy groove with heavier drums to keep the dance on! On the flip, B1 is entrusted to Disco 86 who delivers a sexy smasher track that has been tested in the dancefloor with sexy results. Finally, B2 welcomes Jet Boot Jack, with an awesome banger worth to close this amazing compilation.

Review: Perma horizontally inclined duo Pete Gooding and Chris Coco return to Nang for a second round of Balearic leaning bliss. "Believe" sees the duo enlist the hushed vocal talents of Peter Coyle - front man of long running Liverpudlian troupe Lotus Eaters - and he seems perfectly suited to the blissed out digital skank which might just borrow a little something from Timmy Thomas. Complementing the original are some fine remixes from Volta Cab and Ajello, with the Russian adding to his growing reputation, laying some icily chilled ethereal soundscapes over ever changing percussive rhythms and a truly warm bassline. Ajello add some much needed energy as their Plumb Center Mix showcases what they do best - twisting the vocal flex through the spaces between the pumping percussion, gurgling analogue flourishes and Italocentric basslines.

Tru Thoughts stalwart TM Juke lays on the funk breaks thick via his remix of Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, whilst Bastard Jazz boss DJ DRM drops a bongo heavy laidback house refix of Midnight Lab Band’s "Twilight Reprise". Review: There will always be a demand for modern retouches to classic old touches, those edits which take out the naff bits, extended the breaks, beef up the bass. So it is that another such label joins the fray, and kicks off with a various artists affair that takes on some big tunes. A&R Edits Revisited is actually a new series from Greg Wilson, who draws from his diverse back catalogue to re-issue some of the best loved old gems. Henry Greenwood's electrically charged rework of Neneh Cherry's 1988 classic 'Buffalo Dance' opens up then Peza updates The Blackbyrds' 'Walking In Rhythm' and Derek Kaye offers a lively reinterpretation of The Player's Association and Sophie Lloyd's take on the much covered 'Rise' from Herb Albert closing out with big bass.

Work Me
Review: oooh super hot one from TIL!!! Truth is Light keeps charging along with what could be their most dynamic release yet. Still obscure but rather less obtuse than previous outings! Limited quantities again.
The label shout " A four track 12" beast that includes a huge gospel cover of Sylvesters already smash underground disco hit "I need you". If this doesn't turn people out,
then you should throw these records at people in the club and aim for their necks! The other mystery on here is an african disco song of equally anthem-esque qualities. The man see's a woman's body and it's so fine, he insists she spend the night with him. Where these came from, who knows but we are sure this is the best TIL release to date. Even the mostly instrumental One Step surprises with sinister synth stabs and an odd sound sculpture school opera experiment gone crazy.

Review: Less than three months have passed since the first volume in the Cult Edits series arrived in stores, but already the Multi-Culti crew has rustled up another quartet of weird and wonderful reworks. We're particularly enjoying the bizarre chanted vocals and druggy electrofunk flex of Inigo Vontier's brilliantly madcap "Cha Cha Cha", though the dense, post-punk Afro-tribal romp that is Dreem Lion's "Acid Se Con Do" is also superb. If percussion-laden heaviness is your thing, be sure to check Alex Le Tan's rework, which brilliantly breathes new life into a chant-tastic chunk of carnival ready drum circle insanity.

Waves Of Love (Deeper mix)
Review: Italian producer Isoul8 and Detroit bassist Paul Randolph (of Innerzone Orchestra fame) hook up on this rather lush 12" on Japanese imprint Especial. "Stay Stay Stay" is a tribute to Roy Ayers and Don Blackman, with soulful vocals floating over the top of languid, funky bass licks and mellow, twinkling keys. The flipside contains two versions of "Waves Of Love" - with the solid 4/4 thump of the disco version slightly shading it for our money. It was also a favourite in the record box of the late Aaron Carl, and as such the Especial crew have dedicated this release to the much loved producer.

Review: The third drop in the Correcciones Calypso series finds the Mexican label turning to regular fixture Thomass Jackson for the A side, where he brings some heavyweight crossover pelters for the ever-broadening tastes of the dancefloor. "Maquina De Bongo" is a fierce percussive throwdown with a chuggy cosmic disco sound that drives crowds into a frenzy, while "Lavora!" follows on a similar tip albeit with a slightly punchier EBM undercurrent. On the flip, Plot Pilot has an equally adventurous sound that draws on freaky synth flourishes and Eastern motifs for a pan-continental trip on a seductively dark tip. "Move To The Nida Beach" slows things down to an insanely catchy, chant-along synth pop pulse.
